It seems like Pinochet is all the rage these days. Everywhere, bloggers and other opinionated bastards (and nobody knows the meaning of “opinionated bastard” more than His Opinionated Bastardness Himself) are talking about him and his Evilness.

We will, of course, abstain from wasting electrons on linking to the lefty loons’ opinions. If you want an intelligent discussion, it’s always a good idea to banish the whining brats from the living room first.

LC & IB Moran is outraged, OUTRAGED that Jonah Goldberg could even think about something nice to say about Augusto, seeing as how the old bastard was obviously, well, a bastard.

Fair enough. You won’t get an argument from His Imperiousness regarding the indisputable fact that Pinochet was an, at times, brutal sumbitch. For the simple reason that yes, Virginia, he was, at times, a brutal sumbitch. As was any number of people, now that I think of it. Abraham Lincoln went a bit overboard at times too, but I’m not going to excoriate anybody for saying nice things about him. Those were pretty desperate times, you know. (Oh, and no, I’m not comparing Honest Abe to Augusto Pinochet, in case anybody is getting their dander up. My point is that desperate times sometimes require desperate measures. I’ll elaborate later).

For a more thoughtful and, dare I say, “nuanced” discussion on the merits and demerits of Augusto Pinochet, read the Imperial Firearms Advisor here as well as here.

As to myself, well…

I have one word for the ones too busy to express their justified outrage at Pinochet’s excesses to contemplate the whole picture: Allende.

That’s a rather important thing to keep in mind. You see, Allende was the alternative. Sure, we’d all have liked for there to be a third, more palatable choice, but there wasn’t. You face tough questions with the reality you have, rather than the reality you wish that you had. Or you join the liberals and spend the rest of your sorry, wasted existence in denial.

And if you’re still wondering about the real magnitude of the horrors of the Allende alternative, just go to Cuba. Or any other of the nations “blessed” with the wonders of a “dictatorship of the proletariat.”

Or you could go visit every one of the graves of people murdered by the most murderous ideology in the history of mankind, socialism.

Make sure you block your calendar for a while, though. At last count, that most vile of ideologies was responsible for the murder of at least 100,000,000 people. It makes the “more than 3,000″ bereaved families of Chile pale a bit by comparison, doesn’t it? No, it doesn’t justify those people’s “disappearance” (although I dare say that at least some of them might not have been the innocent, peaceful, democracy-loving babes that they’re often made up to be), but it does put things a bit into perspective, if you ask me.

Compared to what the Chileans would have faced under Allende and whatever socialist murdering scab on the scrotum of humanity might have followed him, I’d say they got the better end of the deal. It is cold comfort, I know, to those 3,000, and their loss and anger should never be mocked or belittled, but still…

Sometimes things really could be a whole lot worse, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the time.

But since Pinochet was, undeniably, a brutal bastard, I suppose it would’ve been better to let the Chileans suffer through what Cuba is today.

Because if you can’t have the “perfect”, it’s better to have nothing at all.

Bullshit.

Thatisall.
