Anti-Idiotarian Rottweiler » But It’s For Their Own Good!

Remember that there is no such thing as an “objectively good (or bad) culture.” At least not in the “reality-based community.”

We, on the other hand, would beg to differ, but that’s most likely because we’re an Evil, Bigoted Right Wing Death Beast who doesn’t understand all the nuances involved here (link thanks to LC Jackboot):

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (Reuters) - Worried that her daughters’ budding breasts would expose them to the risk of sexual harassment and even rape, their mother Philomene Moungang started ‘ironing’ the girls’ bosoms with a heated stone.

“I did it to my two girls when they were eight years old. I would take the grinding stone, heat it in the fire and press it hard on the breasts,” Moungang said.

“They cried and said it was painful. But I explained that it was for their own good.”

We’re sure that NOW and assorted other feminists will be all over this one like… Well, like… SOMETHING, dammit. As soon as they get done protesting the patriarchal, insanely oppressive nature of American society, that is. We are womyn, hear us ROAR!

*squeak?*

“Breast ironing” — the use of hard or heated objects or other substances to try to stunt breast growth in girls — is a traditional practice in West Africa, experts say.

And that means that it is automatically beyond reproach. To even suggest that squishing the budding breasts of pre-teen girls with heated stones would be an example of neo-fascist AmeriKKKan Kultural Imperialism so fantastically atrocious that Andrew Sullivan would have to cry himself to sleep for weeks as a result of the gob-smacking vileness of it all. Besides, putting panties on the heads of terrorists is MUCH worse!

“If society has been silent about it up to now it is because, like other harmful practices done to women such as female genital mutilation, it was thought to be good for the girl,” said [local anthropologist Flavien] Ndonko.

And that’s really all the explanation you need, right there. It’s for their own damn good, so shut up, you Western KKKulture Nazis!

“Even the victims themselves thought it was good for them.”

Color us skeptical, but it would seem to us that a frightened eight-year-old girl who has just been mashed under a red hot rock would be somewhat unlikely to protest too loudly when the adult sadist torturing her told her to shut up, because it was “for her own good.”

It just doesn’t quite meet our admittedly ridiculously high standards for what constitutes “reliable testimony”, but that’s just our simplisme speaking, no doubt.

The same simplisme that suggests to us that beating the animals doing that to small girls over the head with a grinding stone until their brains seep out of their thoroughly crushed skulls would be as enjoyable as it would be just.

However, the practice has many side effects, including severe pain and abscesses, infections, breast cancer, and even the complete disappearance of one or both breasts.

All for their own good, we’re sure.

“You ask me why I did it?” said Moungang. “When I was growing up as a little girl my mother did it to me just as all other women in the village did it to their girl children. So I thought it was just good for me to do to my own children.”

No. The truly good thing to do would be to tie up your tubes with razor wire before you can reproduce again, you horrid, backward — thing.

Far more important than cancer or abcesses is the avoidance of temptation of young Cameroonian boys.

Umm - where are all the NOW-type comments in support of this practice? None to be found. In fact, it appears the entire point of the referenced article has been missed. Another quote from the article makes this clear:
For Ndonko, the campaign is a battle to respect the physical integrity of young girls — with broader implications for human rights

So why this assumption that there would be some kind of approval for this practice from feminists or anyone else? Complete misread of the story.

  8. MuscleDaddy Comment by MuscleDaddy

    Neighseighr,

Actually, the point was not that feminists would approve of the practice - but rather that, without a conservative administration to shrill at for being behind the practice, the feminists simply don’t care.

After all, what would coming out against oppressive, damaging practices against LittleBrownPeople committed by other LittleBrownPeople really do for their overarching political agendas?
Worse than nothing - in fact, it would open them up to criticism from their own political camp for not being ‘MultiCulti Enough’.

So, unless feminists rise up in large numbers against this practice, it proves that the only reason they protest is to attack the administration. They have no real sense of right/wrong, justice, morality, ethics or indeed any actual position on anything. Just this gol darn need to attack the administration, the shriller the better.

Well, take N.O.W. (please!) From their website:

Since its founding in 1966, NOW’s goal has been to take action to bring about equality for all women. NOW works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace, schools, the justice system, and all other sectors of society; secure abortion, birth control and reproductive rights for all women; end all forms of violence against women; eradicate racism, sexism and homophobia; and promote equality and justice in our society.

So, what is NOW working on? http://www.now.org/
I see they are doing the Code Pink fake fast for peace, which doesn’t qualify under their own charter statement, but not a peep about breast ironing. Mind you, I’ve met very few people that had no ethics or position on anything, so leave the strawman at home. I do get to call NOW what they are - lying hypocrites. After all, they are attacking the administration over the war (not in the charter) but didn’t care that Clinton harassed an intern (in the charter).

I’m not the expert on NOW’s charter that you profess to be. But a NOW member might argue that attacking the administration over the war is part of the promote equality and justice in our society - kind of a stretch perhaps. I did click on the link you provided and it seems that they’re doing a lot that seems directly aligned with the charter - all kinds of feministy stuff.

I also read their press release on Code Pink and am not sure how it qualifies as a fake fast. Did they not actually fast in your view? Or is it that it was only for one day or maybe part of a day?

BTW, while at the NOW site, I did a search on “Clinton Monica Lewinsky” and found that they did have things to say about that whole episode. Their spin included the following:

We have said from the beginning that no CEO and no elected official, including the president, should take advantage of the aphrodisiac of power to have sex with interns or staff.

Consensual sex with a White House intern is an abuse of power by the president; but consensual sex is not illegal harassment and it is not an impeachable offense. Nor is it in the best interest of our country for the president to resign.

    and

When it comes to abuse, there continues to be no evidence that the president harassed Monica Lewinsky. She has apparently made no complaint to that effect at any time. A victim of a boss/worker power imbalance she may have been. It would do us all good for newspaper columnists to use their platforms to launch a serious discussion about the complicated relationships between power and age, and sex.

Yes. It is. And rather more of a stretch than to suggest that a function of the war is to ‘promote equality and justice in Iraq.’

Ridiculous, all-or-nothing strawmen aside - if you want to see a group whose purpose is really equality for women (rather than using that as a flotation device for their own political agendas), try EqualityNow.

Check out that last one on their ‘Latest News’ list - I haven’t noticed NOW speaking across the airwaves to ‘celebrate long-awaited suffrage for women in Kuwait.’

A ‘rolling fast’? Not eating for a day is nothing. I’ve done that quite a few times.
Hunger strikes that allow (check Ms. Sheehan’s own words for verification) Jamba Juice protein smoothies? Diets will be needed after this hunger strike finishes up - Jamba Juice smoothies pack on the pounds.
If this is fasting, I’m firing up the blender. Q: “What are you drinking?” A: :Steak and baked potato. I’m on a hunger strike!”

Not an expert on NOW, did not claim to be one, do not appreciate the calumny.

Hm. Saddam, et al, were for women’s rights? That’s one I don’t think I can swallow. American troops in Iraq are damaging women’s rights? That one is even harder.
The bit on Clinton is classic. “He did bad, but shouldn’t be punished.” It is right in that Monica went along with it, making it sexual congress rather than sexual harassment. Of course, some of his other targets didn’t go along, but… Hey, he shouldn’t be punished.

hmm..missed this on the first read:

The practice is most common in the Christian and animist South of the country, rather than in the Muslim North and Far North provinces, where only 10 percent of women are affected.

Well, with the populace religion breakout at 40% indigenous religions, 40% Christian, and 20% muslim, one wouldn’t expect there to be a bit of skew along these particular lines would one, regardless of geograpic population distribution?

I’m sure this is prohibited by the native muslims as they would simply execute their pre-pubescent daughters, should she incite a rape.

But then I’m not a statistician or an apologist for the jihadis like Al-RotoRooter either.

    Wow. This is FUN!

Since its founding in 1966, NOW’s goal has been to take action to bring about equality for all women.

“Unless they happen to be tortured, humiliated, stoned, raped or murdered by groups and/or individuals that we agree with/are opposed to the people we DON’T agree with. See: Taliban, The and Clinton, William J.”

NOW works to eliminate discrimination and harassment in the workplace

“Unless the workplace is the Oval Office and a Democrat President is busy having his bent dick sucked off by an intern.

Allegations about pubic hairs on Coke cans related to Conservatives, on the other hand… STONE THEM!!!”

    schools,

“Unless we’re talking about fundamentalist regimes opposed to a Republican Administration, in which case not being allowed to attend school, PERIOD, does NOT constitute ‘discrimination.’”

    the justice system,

“Unless the female appointee or potential appointee happens to be a Conservative. See: Brown, Janice R”

    and all other sectors of society;

“Provided, of course, that the discrimination and/or harrassment can be pinned on a Conservative.”

    secure abortion,

“Which is quite fine, even when the unborn child being killed is female. They might grow up to vote Republican anyway, so OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! Or stick a pair of scissors in their skulls and suck their brains out, doesn’t matter. To us.”

    birth control and reproductive rights for all women;

“‘Reproductive rights’ NOT meaning ‘the right to not have unprotected sex with whatever we feel like fucking at any given point in time’, but instead meaning ‘the right to chop the unborn consequences of our actions, the child, into tiny little bits when we wake up and the hangovers subside.”

    end all forms of violence against women;

“Unless it’s committed by equally valid foreign cultures exerting their rights to, including but not limited to, stone women for being raped and shooting them in the back of the head for showing a bit of ankle in public.

Say ‘hey, that’s a pretty dress you’re wearing today’ to your secretary, on the other hand, and we’ll declare fucking JIHAD on your oppressive, sadistic, uncaring, Rethuglican ass!”

    eradicate racism,

“Which really has nothing to do with women in particular, but we’re on a roll scoring ‘feel-good’ points here, so bear with us.”

Wow. NOW must have added that right after they got done character assassinating Juanita Broaddrick for bringing credible rape allegations against their idol, Slick Willy von Rapemeister, allegations that they never even bothered giving the benefit of the doubt.

Unlike the allegations against Clarence Thomas but, of course, those were against a CONSERVATIVE, so they just HAD to be true. No skepticism needed THERE.
