LC Kwongdzu alerts us to this little tidbit that hasn’t been getting all that much airtime, at least not while we’ve been watching:

The FBI alerted state and local authorities Monday to be on the lookout for 11 Egyptian exchange students who arrived in the U.S. last month but never showed up for class.

The men, who range in age from 18 to 22, were scheduled to attend a month-long program in U.S. history and culture, plus English language instruction, at Montana State University along with six other students. The group flew from Cairo and arrived in the U.S. on July 29. All entered the U.S. legally, but officials said the no-shows violated the terms of their visas and that the government would likely send them home once they turn up.

FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko emphasized that there was no indication that the men were involved in any illicit activity.

…other than violating the terms of their visas and entering the country under false pretenses, that is. But no, absolutely nothing to see here, which is why the FBI are alerting Law Enforcement to look out for and apprehend those 11 “exchange students.” We suppose we should be thankful that they weren’t signing up for flight school.

You can call us paranoid all you want, but when 11 “students” from a Muslim country between the ages of 18 and 22 simultaneously decide to enter the country and disappear, our Imperial Spidey Sense tends to start tingling. And finding this (via Hot Air) doesn’t make matters any better:

CAIRO, Egypt — Al Qaeda’s No. 2 leader said in a new videotape aired Saturday that an Egyptian militant group has joined the terror network.

It was the first time that al Qaeda has announced a branch in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous nation. The Egyptian group, Gamaa Islamiya, is apparently a revived version of a militant group of the same name that waged a campaign of violence in Egypt during the 1990s but was crushed in a government crackdown.

“We announce to the Islamic nation the good news of the unification of a great faction of the knights of the Gamaa Islamiya … with the al-Qaida group,” Ayman al-Zawahri said in the videotape aired on the Al-Jazeera news network.

But it’s probably nothing.

Islam is a “Religion of Peace”, after all.

Sire…there may be another explanation, and one not paranoid or sinister…they may have not “vanished” but gone into hiding.

When the last Olympics was on here, and the Commonwealth Games, we had this happen with students and athletes from another country…they vanished because they wanted to “defect” and had to do it to get away from their “minders” (whose job is usually to ensure they don’t run)…this could fall under “illegal immigration”, sure..but maybe they went into hiding because they dont want to go back.

It’s possible they could reappear soon and ask for asylum..something they may not have been able to do with their “minders” so close by.

It’s just as plausible a possibility.

Yet another reason to have infinite confidence in our friends at Homeland Security.

Homeland Security: Where we can’t find our own ass with both hands and a flashlight.

Homeland Security: When you absolutely, positively want to give the terrorists a head start.

Homeland Security: We could act decisively to prevent terrorism, but our masters at CAIR won’t let us.

True…it’s not always the only one. But when it comes to National Security, which scenario do you want our Defence and Intelligence *snort* Agencies to react to? I would much prefer they treated this as a potential terrorist case and then if circumstances prove otherwise…make it known to any foriegn visitors that if they continue to conduct themselves in such a suspicious manner they can expect to be treated the same way. If this is a case of a “college kids joy ride” then they need to be made to understand that in a post-9/11 America this in NOT acceptable and have their asses sent packing. Better to err on the side of caution…than to be delivering a few thousand body bags to the next smoking pile of rubble that used to be a building or shopping mall.

It’s possible, but with a war on and considering their origins, we have to assume the worst. Last time we were laissez-faire about these things we ended up with four smoking craters and 3,000 of our citizens dead.

C’mon guys, let’s not over-react. So what it they’re all young adult male muslims. What could there be in Montana that could be of interest to terrorists??? Oh, wait a minute…. There is Malmstrom Air Force Base, and a few dozen Minuteman III missile silos. Not easy targets for conventional munitions, but terrorist targets are not chosen for military value, but how it will play in the leftist press.

There are those who call me…. Tim

Yeah, but we ARE going to hunt them down.

Anyway, you are correct that the worst case scenario is not always the correct one.

However, if your going to prepare for a scenario, the worst case is usually a good one to prepare for.
