It’s a sad day indeed when the world no longer has the wonderful presence of the talented and lovable Don Knotts around to make us laugh. His list of TV & movie credits is too long to even begin to list here.

Goobye, Barney. (aka Mr. Limpet)

The hours of joy given to me by this man are uncountable. The Andy Griffith Show, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken and The Incredible Mr. Limpet all made my world a happier and nicer place growing up.

    RIP Mr. Knotts.

    Everybody dies eventually.

But films and TV shows go on forever. So in a way, he will always be with us.

And Darren McGavin(dad in the Christmas Story, and Kolchek the Night Stalker) dies this morning……this really sucks, these usually happen in 3s, let’s hope the next one is Ted Kennedy or some other liberal asswipe.

Good bye, Barney…you were a part of my afternoon for so many years, so endearingly human, kind and gentle, yet filled with love and good humor. The Ghost aqnd Mr. Chicken a classic, the good guy gets the girl after all. You left a fine legacy many others could seek to emulate……..thank you.

Deathknyte, that was exactly my thought when I first saw this post. In fact, it’s that view that allows me to reconcile the passing of John Wayne.

I have no idea what Don Knotts political leanings were. I do not care. I do know he helped shape me. I do mourn his loss. Barney, I hope you find that extra bullet, I hope you become sheriff and find the respect you searched for. I hope Andy will always be your friend. I thank you for your portrayal of a small town deputy. I will miss you. Your friend, John.

Don Knotts was a funny guy. He was able to bring a smile in just the way he chose to react to a given situation. Barney Fife was a classic charactor, and later in life Mr Furley was spot on as well.

By the way he was NOT in the Marines. That was much like the rumor of Bob Keeshen and Lee Marvin serving together in the Marines during WWII. (Lee WAS a Marine, Keeshen missed serving in WWII because he was too young, they did not serve together.) Knotts was in the Army

Technically was an Army Reservist for one week. After being inducted for World War II service on June 14, 1943, was assigned to the Army Enlisted Reserve Corps on inactive duty. Reported for active duty one week later, on the 21st of June, and was transfered to active duty status in the Army of the United States.

Veteran of the Second World War who was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (with 4 bronze service stars), Army Good Conduct Medal, Marksman Badge (with Carbine Bar) and Honorable Service Lapel Pin.

Served in the Army of the United States, under the service number 35 756 363, from June 21, 1943 to January 6, 1946. Discharged in the rank of Technician Grade 5, which was the equivalent of a Corporal.

the above was from IMDB here

In any case he will be missed.

Threes company was one of my favorite shows as a kid. The black & white photo of Don above, from the sitcom he was in, was a little before my time and unfortunately I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode. But the laughs he brought me from Threes Company were many….G-d rest his soul.

The photo was from the *old* Andy Griffth Show. Andy was a sheriff for the fictional southern town of Mayberry. But due to the care of the writers to get the viewing public to believe. They caught the spirit of small town life in America (at least back in the late 50’s early 60’s). Barney,(the part played by Don Knotts) was Andy’s Deputy. He was the *ying* to Andy’s *yang*. And he played that roll to a tee. I often wondered if he could have done Thurber’s Walter Mitty character in *A Thurber Carnival*. He would have been perfect for it.

I will truly miss this man. What a world of laughs he brought us.

Anyone around here old enough to remember him in his old “Man on the Street” routine? He used to do this on variety shows, where he would go out on the street in NYC and have someone play the part of a tv reporter interviewing a “man on the street” for opinions of various issues of the day. He would deliver totally ridiculous answers in a stuttering, petrified voice until the “reporter” would finally ask, “Sir… are you nervous?” Then he’d straighted up sharply, become bright-eyed, and say, “Nup!”

I could see that routine a hundred times a week, and it was always funny :D.

I also remember when he “ran for president”. THAT was a trip :D. He took elements from his old “Man on the Street” routine and wove them into preposterous “answers” for the issues of the day… and that was sometime during the Vietnam Era!!! :D He skewered a lot of sacred cows without ever revealing his actual political stance on anything! He was an equal-opportunity skewerer :D.

We’ll miss you, Mr. Knotts. God speed your way to your reward for providing so much pleasure to so many!

Exactly. Some things transcend politics. Yesterday, a commenter on Fark wrote:

The icons of my youth keep going downstream, and as they pass, they are eroding the bank upon which I stand. Sooner or later, I’m going in too.

That sums it up pretty well, I think.

WTF? Management, would you clean up this mess I made, please? That was supposed to be an image of Darren McGavin and Don Knotts from the movie “Hot Lead” - and it was there too - right up to the moment it disappeared. Some sort of Disney cyber copyright control, I think.

[Might be a hotlinking issue, Mike.  Some sites tend not to like that too much.  I put it in a spot where it shouldn’t be an issue - at least, for now.  -The Management™]

MamaPajamas: The Man On the Street was a Steve Allen Show routine, done every week. It had Allen quizzing people on the news of the day. Tom Poston played a Madison Avenue ad executive, Knotts was always {two initials] Morrison.

    “Your name, sir?”
    “I’m K B Morrison”.
“What does K B stand for?”
    “Ka-BOOM!”
    “What is your profession?”
“I used to work in an explosives plant”.
    “Oh, you’re not there anymore?”
    “IT isn’t there anymore!”
    “Are you nervous?”
    “Noo!

The gender mysteries of Don Knotts

He was wonderfully unthreatening to other male comics, all of whom could think of themselves as one step closer to leading men than Mr. Knotts was. It’s hard to think of an actor, in fact, who got more helping hands than Mr. Knotts in his early days. Male actors were forever offering him parts, trying to get him to join their acts. Sharing the stage with this skinny, spazzy guy could only make them look more commanding….
