“Cleanup in aisle seven!”

Yep, it is me, your resident Liberal, doing some cleanup and troubleshooting here. This is one of several sites that have been literally bombarded with trackback spam attacks over the past three days. Most of the attempts have been successfully fought off with the spam filter, but the attacks themselves are putting a HUGE stress on the bandwidth. So if the page or features load slowly, you now know what it is.

Someone posted an article here the other day, concerning another site that had been “delisted” by the Google search engine. The speculation was that this was a political move on the part of Google.

It probably had more to do with the possibility that there was a whole lotta spam comments buried deep on the site. These spam comments contain links to websites that are on a centralized database like the Spamhaus Project. When the Googlebots scour a site looking for links — and come across a large number of blacklisted links, it then reports back to Google. Google then determines that the site is too “polluted” to list on the search engine without rewarding the blacklisted links with a high “page rank” — the actual reason for the spam comments in the first place. (You wouldn’t want to type “Republican” into the search engine and come up with a list of sites for “sex toys” would you?)

Sites like this one uses a very robust spam filter to prevent spam from nesting deep in the site. Some sites, because of the publishing platforms they use are more susceptable to spam.

No spam filtering system is 100 percent foolproof, and they all require some amount of tinkering from time-to-time to keep ahead of the fuckwads.

So I am going to be doing a little tinkering here to try to make your attacks on us liberals run more smoothly.

Carry on, and don’t mind me…

Hopefully, it will help the load times here, and not make the site “jerky” in IE.

Who cares if it does? Microsoft Internet Explorer sucks ass. Anyone who still uses it deserves to have their sites “jerky.” For the love of God folks, switch to Firefox, or my personal favorite, Opera.

Some folks are forced to use IE for various reasons. While I like Mozilla, if I want to open my Yahoo mail at work I have to use IE.

If you have to use IE for certain sites, take a look at Crazy Browser. It is a free browser that ‘is not IE plug-in or add-on, it just uses IE rendering engine to render the Web pages’. You get tabbed browsing and better security.

The “jerky” situation on this site is not the fault of IE, it is because this site uses a lot of server side and PHP includes. It is a carry-over from when this site was published with Movable Type, and I never really found a better alternative until now.

This is a phase one of a larger effort I plan to do here over the next couple of months. I want to start putting together a theme that utilizes a lot of AJAX, much like the Instant Bark and the Poll feature. My friend, Count Zero has put together an excellent theme borrowing from the K2 technology, and I have been using a version of his work on Democratic Talk Radio It has paged comments, live comments, and uses less resources. I hope to take this same layout here and convert it to AJAX. That way, Misha can arrange things anyway he wants right from the WordPress interface without having to dig deep into the guts everytime he wants to do something.

But I agree, I like Firefox and Opera better than IE, but since at least three out of four people still use IE, I have to make sure this site functions properly in that browser AND still works right in all of the “good” browsers.

You’re right. I just like bagging on IE because I love Opera.

    Ahhh… That explains the Weirdness™ ;-)

I noticed that the layout of the posts had changed subtly over the last few hours (I like the new one much better, by the way), not to mention that one of BC’s posts had gone haywire, showing nothing but [edit mode] in the text body.

I rescued it from Google’s cache, by the way, so it’s all good now. It was the “Sidlin’ On Up To The Trough” one.

By all means, carry on your Imperial Technowizzardness. We would never dare to carp on you too bad. You are, after all, a member of a swiftly shrinking minority.

Nothing worse than having your wife at her ob-gyn’s office and some fruitcake intern rummaging around deep in her innards.

    New imagery for the LC’s!

Allyn…you do good work. If nobody has ever thanked you, consider it done. If nothing else, perhaps the fruits of your labors are the wry grins crossing your face and such, some of what the rowdy bunch here says. This site could be accused of many things, but boredom ain’t one of them. Besides, taking on the rotties is one thing I would go to great lengths to avoid. Veru great lengths. Thanks again.

I’ll chime in with the other LCs and thank you for fixing things, too. But what I really appreciated was your pointing out why blog-comment-spam-bots do what they do. I’d been wondering about that. Speaking of producing a lot of page links to a given site, is that also the intent of “google bombing”, to put sufficient bad links on a targeted site that it causes Google or other search engines to delist that site?
