As we read some of the articles about the Zarqawi termination and who’d kicked the bucket with the worthless roach, we noted how the media were quick to describe Zarqy’s wife as being in her “late teens” rather than pointing out her actual, you know, age.
Having a finely calibrated B.S. Meter™, we were pretty convinced that this meant that she was “older than 15, but just barely, and we wouldn’t want to tarnish our hero Zarqawi’s image as a heroic freedom fighter by mentioning that, so we’ll just say ‘late teens’ instead since that, technically speaking, is perfectly true.”
But since we couldn’t prove anything, we just let it go and thought nothing of it.
Well, we can now, thanks to LC & IB Charles (and a tip from the Imperial Linkmaster General):
The Jordanian security official told TIME that the bombing killed Abdul-Rahman and Mr. X, in addition to al-Zarqawi’s 16-year-old wife.
You know what? We should just quit holding back and go with our gut instinct instead, since it tends to be right on the target 99.999% of the time.
Oh, but wait, there’s more: The airstrike also killed their 18-month-old son.
Time to do some math. Assuming, to be generous, that she was just a day shy of her 17th birthday when her poor choice in husbands got her blown to tiny bits, that’d make her 15 and a half at the birth of her son which again, assuming that gestation takes as long for terrorists’ wives as it does for civilized human beings, would mean that she was 14 when Zarqawi knocked her up. Or 13, if she’d just turned 16 when she died.

It’s perfectly legal as long as the sex comes after the marriage vows. Even a girl of 17 (age of consent in TX) would have to get permission, since the marriage age is 18.
I see that Texas law does allow a 13 year old to get married, with a court order. However, in such cases an advocate is assigned to make a recommendation to the court based on the best interest of the child. So the law recognizes that a 13 yr old may be sexually mature, but not able to make such a decision on their own. Anyway, it wasn’t that long ago in our culture that such things weren’t that unusual (esp. in rural areas), and I imagine there are probably some pockets in the country where it still goes on without being remarkable. Although I suspect that most cases of underage marriage actually involve prosecutable offenses prior to the marriage, regardless of what the local community thinks about it.
All that said, the idea of drawing a moral equivilent between state laws that provide for marriage of underage persons under certain legal requirements, but where such marriages are actually rare, and a society in which young girls are routinely raped and “married” against their will, is the definition of reprehensible. Or at least a definition.
