For days, we’ve heard about the paleswinians threatening to murder CPL Gilad Shalit unless Israel immediately surrenders to Hamas, withdraw their troops and release a thousand paleswinian terrorists held prisoner by Israel.
Now, according to The Australian, the Israelis have decided that turnabout is fair play (hat tip to LC & IB Ace):
ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.
The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.
It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.
Hamas’s Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.
Now, since the article lacks a direct quote, it’s entirely possible that The Australian is making shit up, interpreting whatever message Israel actually sent in much the same way that Ruth Baader-Meinhof Ginsburg interprets the Constitution, but we sincerely hope that they’ve got it exactly right. Nothing would please His Majesty more than to learn that at least one government on the planet “gets it” regarding terrorism in general and Hamas in particular.
If it’s true, then Haniyeh can run and hide all he wants, he’ll only die tired.
But last night’s direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.
Much like the Allies’ promise to destroy Germany’s military, wipe out their infrastructure and industry and capture, try and hang Adolf Hitler, a democratically elected head of state, “sharply raised the stakes” of WWII.
Pardon us if we can’t quite manage The Australian’s level of righteous indignation at the thought of exterminating genocidal maniacs. It must be because we’re so “un-nuanced” and simplisme.
And while we’re on the subject of governments that “get it”, are we the only Evil Imperial Right Wing Death Beast that got the warm fuzzy-wuzzies when Vladimir Putin reacted to the news of the murder of five of their diplomats at the hands of terrorists by saying that they were going to “use all available resources to hunt down and destroy those responsible?”
Please understand that when a Russian president says things like that, it’s not just a vapid, feel-good “bring the perpetrators to justice” message. When Russian presidents say stuff like that, it’s a direct order, and whoever they’re talking about tend to start suffering strange “accidents” shortly thereafter. Strange, painful and terminal “accidents.”
You go, Vlad. Kill as many as you like. We’d love to help, but we’ll have to make do with cheering you on from the sidelines, bound and gagged by the cub scouts among the Supreme Whores who care more about the “rights” of terrorists than the lives of Americans.
UPDATE: LC Brendan of Australia informs us that The Australian is not one of “those papers”, something that fills us with joy since it would seem to indicate that the Israelis are, indeed, holding a Hellfire to the head of the paleoswinian PM’s simian skull. Our skepticism regarding the claim were due to one part pessimism leading us to think that there was no way that news as good as these could be true and two parts being skeptical of anything that appears in the MSM. Thanks, LC Brendan, for cheering us up. Life is good!

This would actually be a wonderful move by Israel. Imagine Israel going tit-for-tat. They’re already accused of it in the world court, so why not match Palestinians missle-for missle, execution-for-execution. This might bring light upon the action/reaction confusion your average moron has with this. Hundreds of Qassam missles hit Israel, but it’s Israel’s knocking out the power that makes the headlines. How about Israel launch a missle into Palestinian civilian areas each time the same is done to them?
They don’t get one ounce of respect or support for showing restraint anyway, so let’s match the enemy punch for punch. If the moral balance can’t be tipped either way, only then will the world finally see what a REAL back and forth results in - and they can’t say Israel lacked restraint, they can only blame both sides equally. Brilliant move. Let’s hope it’s true. I’m very impressed with the stunning display of support/action/policy regarding Israel’s protection of one of their own. I am in awe of the IDF.
June 30th, 2006 at 9:40 pmThe Russians invented realpolitik. They understand that the only two places you will find a Paleosimian is at your throat or under your heel, and have a damned good idea of which is the better place.
FIRST!
June 30th, 2006 at 9:44 pmDamn… he posted while I was typing…now what fun is that ?
June 30th, 2006 at 9:45 pmAs an added note of cheer, I read this earlier today…
http://tinyurl.com/e8xb8
Apparently, Israel has used Hamas’ M.O. against them and have “kidnapped” approx. 1/3 of the leadership of the P.A..
And speaking of Russian S.O.P. …(also from Strategy Page)
“Back in the 1980s, for example, Islamic terrorists in Lebanon kidnapped a Russian diplomat. The Russians (then the Soviets, a distinction without much difference in these matters) quickly found out which faction had their guy, kidnapped a relative of one of the kidnappers, and had a body part delivered to the Islamic kidnappers. The message was, release the Russian diplomat unharmed, or the KGB (Soviet secret police) would keep sending body parts, and grabbing kinfolk of the kidnappers. The Russian diplomat was released.”
We could learn a thing or two from these guys…
June 30th, 2006 at 9:48 pmMy problem with Vlad is that he doesn’t connect the Chechans he’s willing to “deal with” to the other Islamofascists he’s trying to sell nuclear weapons to. In some ways he’s worse than US peace creeps like Cindy Sheehan because he does acknowledge the jihad on the one hand, but then he keeps on feeding it with the other.
June 30th, 2006 at 9:51 pmA thousand Paleos for one Israeli? Sounds about right, an even exchange.
June 30th, 2006 at 10:15 pmMisha..no, thery dont make shit up. “The Australian” won’t allow that..ever.
It’s gospel as reported..if that’s what was said to their reporter than that’s what was said. That paper is not in the habit of doing a CBS…their rep is too good to allow some hack to wreck it.
They actually have ethics…try not to die of shock, but there it is.
July 1st, 2006 at 12:03 amWell,..in a way its true..it will raise the stakes. Soldiers are one thing..threatening a semi governmental figure is another.
Misha…the paper is actually quite objective, and some of the past reviews and commentaries have been…acidic.Read their past reports and stories on Kerry et al….they went for the jugular.
Think of them as neutral or at least objective observers, and take their reports in that vein.
Ease up a little will you..? Not all are biased or slanted..a few do keep trying to be objective.
July 1st, 2006 at 12:10 amJuly 1st, 2006 at 12:15 am
“Semi-governmental figure?” Brendan, you know that Palestine is run by Hamas these days…and the governmental figures that aren’t part of Hamas are part of Fatah, which is basically a PLO splinter group masquerading as a political party. I’ve heard of “state-sponsored terrorism” before; the so-called nation of Palestine is a terrorist-sponsored state, whose terrorist leaders were freely and knowingly elected by the Palestinians themselves, on a platform of terror aimed at Israel. And I don’t think any of them - Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, etc. - quite qualify as “soldiers,” either. (I’m sure there’s five Supreme Court justices who would likely disagree with that statement, but they’re welcome to collectively kiss my ass.)
Given the choice between peace and war, the Pallies freely chose war to the knife, and put their fate into the hands of people dedicated to the extermination of Israel and all her inhabitants. Now they’re reaping the results of what they’ve sown.

July 1st, 2006 at 1:05 amWait, when the Paleosimians kill Israeli citizens that they kidnap it is an execution but, when the Israelis threaten to kill the asswipes responsible for the kidnappings it is an “assasination”???? Give me a fragging break!!!!!!!!!!!
July 1st, 2006 at 1:22 amLC Wes….I never said it was a perfect world…hell in some areas we are dealing with a dozen issues and factions..we need a damned score card as to who does what with the PLO and HAMAS.
Want my summary of the current situation?
HAMAS has pissed off the Israelis something nasty, the Israelis are justifiably pissed and wanting toi kick ass…and the rest of the world is waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Look..HAMAS isnt perfect, isn’t a real government in any real sense but they are what there is to deal with…and even half a loaf is better than none.
It IS unprecedented..I cannot remember a time when one government has OPENLY threatened the leader of a nother government specifically.
War, yes…assassination..no.
It’s a fucking powderkeg…do I have an answer to the situation????
FUCK NO…if the Palestinians let the soldier go…the Israelis backed off slightly (don’t scowl at me like that Misha..you know I’m right…) the situation would cool a little and MAYBE it can be defused.
It sure as hell beats a possible war that can spread to other M.E.states…
HAMAS needs to accept and acknowledge Israel. They wont…their funds got cut off, and that’s led to where we are now.
*drops head onto the desk and raises hands helplessly*
Flame away….
July 1st, 2006 at 2:39 amI’m not going to flame you, Brendan, because I know where you’re coming from. That whole entire fucking G-d forsaken region has been a powder keg since time immemorial, and nobody wants to see it explode because it’s going to be one unholy, bloody mess if it does.
Problem is, there’s no way to avoid it. Israel can’t back down. If they do, all that we’ll achieve is a de facto acceptance of kidnapping and murder as a means of politics. I don’t know how the fuck the Israelis managed to put up with this shit for as long as they did. Hamas being the elected government of “palestine” was the last straw. Imagine al-Qaeda being the elected government of Iraq. The fact that Israel sat down quietly and gave Hamas, a known terrorist organization, as long as they did to sort their shit out and prove that they could change is about as much restraint as you can expect any government to display.
It’s Munich 1938 all over again. We all know what it’s going to come to, so we can either choose to deal with it now or put it off until later. In the 30s, our reluctance to take the fight led to 6 years of bloody war and G-d only knows how many million dead.
There is no way we can avoid this confrontation short of surrendering, just as the Second World War was inevitable. The best thing or, more accurately, the least horrible thing we can do right now is to finish it. There are no good options left.
Think about the millions of lives that would’ve been saved if WWII had started in ‘35 instead of ‘39. It would still have been bloody, but the fact of the matter was that when Hitler gained power, it was pre-destined. It was going to happen no matter what. The only negotiable part was how many people on both sides would have to die before it was over.
There is no easy way out here.
We can deal with it now or we can leave it to become even worse.

July 1st, 2006 at 3:25 amBrendan, what these other states
need is a first class, rubbing their noses in it, ass kicking. Isreal has just announced that if this crap doesn’t stop, it’ll be open season and no bag limits.
The Japs and the Germans were extremely xenophobic little bastards up until we ground their countries into the dirt, then helped them to rebuild. The only way Israel and the western world can TRULY overcome these zealots’ ideology is to grind them into dust and completely shame and humiliate them.
It sounds like Israel is more than ready to take that first step. Bravo for them. We should be supportive.
July 1st, 2006 at 3:41 amSpot on, Emporer.
I’ve often thought that tyrants would not be so bold and would certainly not openly support terrorists if other nations were willing to hold the rogues in charge. I’m glad Israel is willing to do that — we certainly haven’t been. Heck, up until the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there was credible talk of allowing Saddam and his two scumbag brats to leave Iraq for the safety and comfort of life in wealthy exile.
The Israeli plan will be interesting to watch. I pray we can catch a clue.
July 1st, 2006 at 3:44 amIsrael Threatens To Kill Haniyeh…
The Australian reports that Israel has threatened to kill uberterrorist - and Palestine’s Prime Minister - if Corporal Shalit is not freed unharmed.
July 1st, 2006 at 4:47 am…
I support Israel to the hilt.
I know..I know…HAMAS has done the one thing they should have known better not to do… and that was back Israel into a corner..they’ve limited their own options now.Idiots.
Grabbing the soldier was a fucking STUPID move…Abbas says he doesn’t control them…great, so he’s a real help.Killing the 18 year old was an act of barbarity that has exacerbated the situation..even if the soldier is released (sorry , I cant remember his name right now…no slight intended…)Eliyah is still dead, and it won’t cool heads any….
Sire..you said
..I agree. With any luck..this may end peacefully..God knows I a / don’t want the Israelis to surrender, and b/ don’t want to see any more blood spilled on either side…we can post our comments here all we like..but in the end..all we can do is wait..and hope…and pray.
Thank you for hearing me out..Misha there is another article for you as an example of what I was talking about.

July 1st, 2006 at 5:25 amIts unlikely that the Israeli Government would make such an announcement on the Sabbath. But then again, it is permitted to break the Sabbath if a life is at stake.
True or not, the timing is perfect either way, as Israel will not be discussing this until after the Sabbath.
Who knows what will happen between now and then.

July 1st, 2006 at 8:26 amBrendan, nobody’s flaming you, least of all me. I’m just pointing out that the Palestinian “government” is a total fiction; in reality they’re all just a bunch of openly-declared terrorists. And assassinating terrorists is hardly a new precedent for the Israelis or anybody else…even if these latest targets are pretending to be politicians.
For that matter, I think the precedent of targeting government leaders for assassination has already been set. Didn’t coalition forces target Saddam Hussein (and other major players in his regime) directly, for example, during both Gulf Wars? Yes, technically Saddam was being targeted in his military role as commander-in-chief of Iraq’s military…but it amounts to the same thing, doesn’t it?

July 1st, 2006 at 2:34 pmoops
July 1st, 2006 at 2:35 pmI was waiting for something like this to happen. The Israelis gave Gaza to the squatters- GAVE it to them- and their first act was to trash the place, then demand funds to rebuild. I sort of figured what Misha was saying:
all along thinking to myself that Israel’s message was implicit- “You now have the start of your country. DO NOT fuck with us ever again”.
July 1st, 2006 at 7:58 pmVirtually any other group would have taken that as a sign that they were about to get what they wanted, maybe even a bit more. But Abbas, being the wanna-be power broker he is, decided to revert to old ways. And now, he has a throughly pissed off IDF aimed straight at his narrow ass. Listening to the radio on the way home this afternoon, it was reported that Haniyah’s house is now just a smoking crater. About fuckin’ time the Israelis got serious. I completely agree with Brendan’s sentiments- there’s been enough bloodshed and fighting already- but at some point, the Paleos have to realize in their feeble minds that Israel is here to stay, and no amount of terror attacks are going to make the situation any better.
Guess what. Israel just hit the Phillistines PM office. you know if Israel had obayed God 3 to 4 thousand years ago and obliterated them they might not have this problem now.
