I remeber a time back in the days of the cold war, we were cruising in the Pacific and as usual there was a trawler sniffing around the Carrier group. I was on a can, and all of a sudden noticed all of the escort ships taking off in different directions away from the carrier. After a couple of hours we were coming back to rejoin the bird farm and all of the escorts came up on the trawler from different directions at the same time and as each one passed it they trained all guns on it. Bet that shook them up a little.
The most interesting incident was when we went out to do a test of the ASROC (anti submarine rocket launched torpedo). There was an old diesel sub with us. He was to be off a few miles towing a target buoy and we were supposed to shoot off an ASROC and see how close we could get. Well our XO got to ride on the sub and he said they heard it hit the water and it zigged then zagged and when it zigged again it slammed right into the conning tower of the sub instead of the buoy. Said there was a whole lot of pants changing after that. The downside was we stayed out for another 16 hours searching for the damn ASROC.
