This is a tradegy for all the people involved.

Old Dog, I think the driver of the truck (while he should be punished for his part in the accident) is a (lesser) casualty as well. If you’re honest with yourself, you’ll say “there but for the grace of God,go I”. It takes less than a second of inattention to have an accident like this occur, and I don’t believe that even the most cautious driver among us can say that that moment couldn’t/hasn’t have occurred to him or her.

Even if this driver receives no legal punishment (small chance of that,IMO)he will forever bear the burdon of the knowledge that he caused the deaths of three human beings… Thats a strong punishment in itself for any decent human being to bear.

The Delfster has, as is so often the case, a point here.

Sure, I want to rip the heart out of the chest of the inattentive driver here too, then eat it as he spends his last few seconds on Earth watching me do so.

And then I get to thinking: “Have I ever rear-ended a car because I wasn’t paying attention?” Yes, I have. Granted, when I did it, it was just a matter of increased insurance premiums, but the difference here really is between missing the brakes at a traffic light and missing them on the Interstate.

Am I excusing sleepy drivers barreling down the Interstate or idiots yakking away on their cell phones, checking their maps, changing CDs in the stereo, fumbling around for the lighter on the passenger seat etc. etc. while barreling down the road at 70 mph? The fuck I am. They should all be given a thorough thrashing, as far as I’m concerned. If you’re driving and you need your attention elsewhere for a second, have the fucking courtesy to either pull over or make sure that there are no people ahead of you. At least that way you’ll only kill your own damn fool self.

No, all I’m saying is: If I were that driver, I’d take any punishment that this world could dish out for me and love every second of it if I knew that, in return, the people I’d killed would come back and the horrible guilt of what I’d done would go away.

Should he be punished? Of course. If nothing else, then to make an example that other inattentive drivers will, hopefully, learn from. But still that punishment will be nothing compared to the guilt that he’ll be living with for the rest of his life.

Kind of contradictory signals here. I can understand the feelings, If I had witnessed the accident, I would probably been dragging the guy out of his car and stomping him with the rest of ya…, but like Misha said at first, a momentary lapse, or was it negligence?

I don’t know which scenario would comfort me in this carnage.

I have overestimated my endurance before, waking up at 70 MPH in the inside emergency lane with the K-rail inches from my door. I learned my lesson the easy way, this guy (if it was a lapse) will pay for the rest of his life.

First, having buried all three of my children, I know something of the pain this family is going through right now, and my thoughts are with them and I wish them all the best…

    Secondly,

The only thing I can say is that the driver of that truck needs to meet a character I write elsewhere.

What I was thinking about was to have that character put a Boot so far up that Drivers Ass that his breath would smell like KIWI for a week.

    :em95:

That’s Hi-fucking-larious… You need to pound your “character” up your ass.

This driver did not set out to kill three people, and unless he is a total sociopath, he would gladly eat a peanut butter and KIWI sandwich and under go a beating before and after every meal for the rest of his life if it would even come close to making restitution for what happened. He is going to have to live with the memory of these three people every waking moment, and a good portion of his sleeping ones, for the rest of his days. Your character and his boot can’t even come close to that kind of punishment.

Unless he was “under the influence”, in which case he deserves everything coming to him, he should have pulled over and got a nap. Bottom line, there is no excuse for falling asleep at the wheel.

But, having lived the life, I’d bet he was under threat of loss of his job unless he violated hours of service rules to make his drops, and never thought that something like this would ever happen. It is a common occurrence in the trucking business, though trucking companies will swear on their Mother’s eyes that they don’t do it.

They know there is at least a dozen steering wheel holders out there for every job, and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that this guy’s company is already making preparations to hang him out to dry. It looks a hell of a lot worse for a driver to go from job to job to job trying to find a company that will treat him like a human being, than it does for a trucking company to go through drivers like shit through a goose because they threaten and abuse their drivers, trying to make unrealistic and illegal schedules to beat out the other guy.

I’m not trying to make excuses for this driver, but before you string him up from the nearest tree, take a second and remember that he was trying to do his best to provide for his family, like we all do, but outside forces might have caused him to not think about the unthinkable….

    MoMinuteMan:

No one put a gun to his head and said “Drive”. Even if he had a family to support, there is always an alternative to taking on jobs that endanger other people’s lives. I’d wash a stack of plates reaching to the moon before I would deliberately endanger an innocent person’s life … If my fuckup got people killed, I would have problems living with myself afterwards.

Trucking companies can get away with making people drive too many hours because not enough truckers tell them to FOAD when they make insane requests on their time.

The driver still remains responsible for his actions.

If the father and husband of those girls hauls off and shoots his ass, and then stands trial for it, I would vote to acquit.

Unless he was “under the influence”, in which case he deserves everything coming to him, he should have pulled over and got a nap. Bottom line, there is no excuse for falling asleep at the wheel.

I’m thinking there’s going to be more revealed here (or not, depending on the press in VA) because it WAS THE MIDDLE OF THE AFTERNOON! He didn’t fall asleep after a long night driving his 18-wheeler, it was reported as a “box-truck”, usually used to describe a delivery type vehicle.

And you’re absolutely correct, he’d rather eat a peanut butter, kiwi and VEGAMITE sandwich than have to live with this the rest of his life.

One more point…every single one of you, had you been a witness of the accident, would have IMMEDIATELY gone to the aid of the injured, even the truck driver. All this “ass-kicking” BS would have kicked in after you got home and read or heard about what happened, and more than one of you would have helped him into the ambulance. Look inside and tell me it’s not true.

Quite right, my friend. Very contradictory. Part of me wants to destroy, torture and kill the bastard, that’s the side of me who is the head of a family myself and wouldn’t know how else to cope with a horror like that and, moreover, would be screaming for justice.

Then there’s the other side of me, the logical, rational part, that realizes that I’d probably be doing him a favor by killing him. One thing I know is that if I were him, nobody would be facing that dilemma, because I’d have eaten a bullet already.

Hey Skyechild bite me why dontcha? It must be so nice to walk on water, but the rest of us earth-dwellers have to deal with conflicting emotions and struggles with our Christian life. I’m ticked that a husband and father has to go through this kind of horror and that with the way things are it’s most likely that his horror was brought about by the shitty choices of some slacker. Do I know this for a fact? No. That’s why I am NOT taking action. Does this mean I don’t want to rip somebody’s balls off and shove them up his nose? Wrong again. I hope you find it in your heart to forgive me for being human.

LC Brendand I agree with you, but again being human I still have difficulty walking the high road.

What is the problem with SkyeChild’s post? I think it’s quite reasonable.

Also, as someone pointed out, he will have to live with the guilt of this his whole life–could there be a worse punishment? If you want him dead, what are the odds he will commit suicide at some point, anyway?

Plus, ANYBODY could make a fatal mistake in traffic.

    right….

In 1980 a good friend of mine lost her brother when he was decapitated when he was hit by a drunk driver. Her brother was also a good friend and poker playing buddy of mine. Five years previously, she had lost her OTHER brother to ANOTHER drunk driver…..Think about that, one family…both boys get killed the same way. I was a pall bearer at one of the funerals, and being the practicing alcoholic that I was…I showed up drunk. Talk about irony. Thank God nothing bad happened.

I’m now a recovering alcoholic, and see people in AA meetings all the time who have either killed or hurt somebody while driving drunk. The stories they tell sicken me, and make me thank God every night that I didn’t hurt anyone driving in that condition. I’ve seen both sides of this thing, and grieve for everyone involved.

I’m not sure if I agree with the Emperor when he says this:

One thing I know is that if I were him, nobody would be facing that dilemma, because I’d have eaten a bullet already.

First off, I believe that suicide is a sin…probably the only one that you can’t atone for. As candyass as this sounds, I believe that the greatest good that can be done is to try as hard as you can to make amends to the family of your victim and help them in any way that you can….either financially, spiritually, helping put their kids through college….whatever it takes, granted that the family will have to heal up before they accept your aid, but you gotta try. Killing yourself is an easy escape for you, it really does nothing to help anyone.

I knew someone who killed themself after causing a fatality while driving drunk. She served her time, got sober and attended AA, and one night she OD’d on pills. just couldn’t take the weight of the burden she carried. Nothing was resolved…it was just one more funeral.

This is an awful, nightmarish thing to happen to anyone. Probably the worst that could happen to a family. Would I want to kill someone who did this to my family?? I’d sure as hell entertain the thought on those sleepless nights, but wouldn’t do it…..because in the long run, committing an act like that would make me less than the guy who killed my family. I would be taking a life intentionally, and that’s a weight I don’t want to carry around.

God Bless and comfort the family of the victims…

In times such as this an all too common anger surfaces at circumstances being what they are. Life has taught me, after one friend riding a motorcycle was decapitated by a stop sign, or another with an accidental drowning in a pool full of people, or the car accidents. It is normal and human to lash out, even if it was your child running in front of a legally driven car. I have felt it, I suspect most folks do. But the last thing anybody wants right now is to simultaneously lose your family and be the cause of generating anger and divisiveness among your friends. I only ask of myself that I should let God tend to the dead….and for me to tend to the living. I said a prayer last night before I fell asleep, thinking of this post, grateful knowing my wife was next to me and my daughter safe in bed here at home……may God provide shelter and sanctuary for the survivors, and may we provide the same for the bereaved………

I have learned the human ego is not my friend. I remember wanting to flat out kill somebody…literally murder them for what they had done to a fine human being. Anger burned within me, consuming my rationale, clouding my judgment. Yet, as I was taught in my battle with the bottle……
Forgiveness does not release the driver of that truck from any responsibility, but it would release me from the bondage of hatred. It consumes your spirit and rots your soul. My ego fought that notion from day one, yet time proved it to be true, at least in my case. Oh, I never forget, ever. And I can think of one individual….I would cold bloodedly put a bullet through his head. Even now. Yet I will not throw my life away like that. And I remember a discussion once….”Do not hate and murder in memory of me, rather live your life to the fullest, let my passing generate appreciation and gratitude for what we shared. Cry if you must, but let it be frustration and gratitude, not hate and anger.” In time…….for God never forgets. It has helped me get past life and her trials. I can only suspect the driver of that truck has just trashed the rest of his life, both emotionally and spiritually. I truly harbor no sympathy for him, none; neither do I hate him for this accident. This is what a dead friend taught me. I will not waste the lesson, for his life was worth far more than that.
