Memo to Guy Morriss:  If you’re going to let your team talk trash against its opponent, then spend your entire spring & summer game-planning for one contest…perhaps your team should at least score a point or two, hm?

Arlington Heights 28, Azle 24
#22 TCU 27, Baylor 0
UBuffalo 3, #15 Rutgers 38
#2 LSU 45, Mississippi St 0
#8 Oklahoma 79, N. Texas 10
Dallas 13, Minnesota 24

My understanding had been that the poor-man’s version of Vince Young for Arlington Heights, a lad by the name of Donnell Dickerson, wouldn’t be playing for the Yellow Jackets this year.  But according to this write-up:

The Yellow Jackets scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to come back for a 28-24 victory against Azle in the season opener for both teams. Donnell Dickerson scored on a 29-yard shovel pass from Mark Grace, and Grace scored on a 14-yard keeper to give Heights the final lead with 9:18 left. Dickerson rushed for two touchdowns, of 1 yard and 29 yards, in the first half and finished with 150 yards on 16 carries.

Wow.  May not be such a bad year for Heights, after all.

As expected, few starters played for the Cowboys against the ViQueens Dykings team from BridgeFallDownGoBoomVille Minnesota.  Backup Matt Moore did okay, and his reward was getting cut.  Oh, well.

UBuffalo surprised Temple in its first game last year.  No such luck this year - the game was over early.  Buffalo covered the spread-plus-14, though, so it counts as a victory (albeit moral).

WITY™ (What’d I Tell Ya?) regarding LSU and Missississississi…uh, the Bulldogs?  Bo Pelini’s defense collected 7 turnovers (6 interceptions) and RB Keiland Williams bulldozed for a couple of TDs as the Tigers reauxlled…uh, rolled.

Good thing that coaching careers aren’t defined by one game.

Memo to Todd Dodge:  The competition on this level is just a weeeeeee  bit more than that to which you’re probably accustomed.

New OU quarterback Sam Bradford probably thought practices were tougher.  He went 20-for-22 for 350 yards in the first half as the Sooners also put this one away early.  New OU tailback DeMarco Murray rushed for only 87 yards, but also scored five touchdowns.

What do you do after holding a Texas Tech-style offense to three points last year?  You shut out its sister offense being run in Waco this year.

Last year, it was Baylor head coach Guy Morriss running down TCU head coach Gary Patterson.  This year, Baylor tailback Brandon Whitaker took his shots:

“They have been talking a lot of noise about how they should be in the Big 12,” Whitaker said, “and so we are just going to go down there and prove to them that they shouldn’t.”

Mr. Whitaker, TCU can apparently do something you guys can’t:  Beat Big XII teams on a regular basis.  They’ve now won five in a row against Big XII teams, including your sorry asses twice.

New Frog quarterback Andy Dalton was 18 of 30 for 205 yards and one touchdown in his first start.  Frog backs ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns, and the TCU defense held the Baylor attack to 78 total yards in the second half, forcing three interceptions on their way to four total.

This week:  5-0. (the Dallas game doesn’t count, and Buffalo covered their spread as set by me).  Overall record:  5-0.  Perfect Football Weekend™ achieved.

The PFW will return Friday as we start with the nailbiting early.  Details to come.

Don’t sweat it Jake, at least your team didn’t suffer the humiliation mine did, being the first ranked team to lose to a div AA team. We can’t even joke about refs either. Ours was just shitty prep and playing. Ugh, what a crappy weekend…

    Spats:

Brother, ya left out the most important scores!

    #5 Michigan 32, # 120 (?) Appalachian State 34!

Naw, Southern Football isn’t taken more seriousaly than in Yankeeland! Now, maybe they will re-think this whole “pay a powderpuff for the first game” shit.

Ok, if we’re talking College ball here, then I think my Alma Mater picked a good weak team to get their season rolling:

ASU 45-3 over the mighty San Jose State Spartans.

My back-up team with 11 National titles (USC), managed to pull out a win of only 38-10 over powerhouse Idaho.

Let’s get to the conference games!

First of all, Appalachian State technically can’t be ranked at all, since they’re a 1-AA school, and rankings only cover 1-A. App State did win the AA Championship (which is a tournament…) two years in a row, though.

I’ve told all and sundry who would stand still long enough to listen that Michigan has been an over-rated school for the past five years or so. I didn’t think they were THAT over-rated, though. Michigan made the mistake of looking past their opponent. That score is the result of the second-worst coaching job I’ve ever witnessed in a college game. There is NO excuse for not having your team prepared for ANY game, even if it’s the local junior high team (Ohio State’s preferred non-conference opponents). If Lloyd had the AD from Arkansas in charge, his office would have been cleaned out for him about 30 seconds after the final gun sounded. As it is, he works for a *slightly* more forgiving AD, which means he’ll only be fired by firing squad AFTER the inevitable crushing at the hands of a now-drooling-over-their-last-game Ohio State Buckeyes. If Lloyd loses to App State, Wisconsin and Ohio State all in the same year (now, more likely than it has ever been), he’ll be lucky to be buried in an unmarked grave after the boosters are done with him.

Frankly, I’m surprised I can’t hear the bodies of the Michigan Faithful hitting the pavement from here…

On to more important topics, Wisconsin continues its dominance of Pac-10 teams (yeah, I know…they haven’t played USC yet), and drubbed Washington State at Camp Randall. Wazzoo isn’t the best the Pac-10 has to offer (far from it), but, they’re still a team from a ‘power’ conference. QB Tyler Donovan looks to be a dual-threat, able to run the power option that Bucky under Barry Alvarez thrived on, yet, able to pass well enough that you no longer have the sense that the Badgers are only passing because someone told them they had to. The offensive line and PJ Hill (called “an SUV with no turn signals” by one ESPN writer…) must be drooling over the results of that Michigan-Appalachian State debacle…160 yards rushing (62 from that freak of a QB App State trotted out…remind me again why no D-1A school wanted him?) from a team that runs a spread offense? What’s Michigan gonna do against a team with a REAL running game, like Wisconsin or Ohio State?! For the first time in my memory, I’m no longer dreading Bucky’s trip to the Big House…

In other news, keep an eye out for any Hawaii games you can watch. Colt Brennan is a QB able to shred any and all defenses you want to trot out. 416 yards and 6 TDs by HALF TIME?! (Of course, gaudy numbers like that are a lot easier when your coach doesn’t call a rushing play until halfway through the 3rd quarter…) In Colt’s freshman and sophomore years at Hawaii (he’s a senior now), Wisconsin made the trip to Hawaii for a late season non-conference game. (When asked why Hawaii never had to play Wisconsin at Camp Randall in December, Coach Barry Alvarez professed confusion over who scheduled Wisconsin always having to go to Hawaii in December…Coach Alvarez made the schedule) Colt shredded Bucky’s defense in each game, losing each game only because Hawaii’s defense is as bad as its offense is potent. IIRC, Colt lit up Bucky for about 50 points in the second game, and Hawaii’s defense gave up almost 60 to a team that ran on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down…one almost gets the sense that Hawaii’s defense is trying to get off the field as soon as possible, so Colt can throw another TD. It’s almost like Hawaii is being coached by Mike Leach (of Texas Tech) on crack.

They thought they had. Michigan backed out of their scheduled game versus Hawaii (the same Hawaii whose QB threw for just a hair under a quarter mile, and 1/3 of the way to 100 by half time), and talked App State into playing at the last minute (meaning sometime last year).

I can only imagine the carnage that would have resulted if Hawaii had actually been able to play Michigan…Michigan would have been better prepared (I hope), but, the score would have been even worse (see last year’s Rose Bowl…).

Oh, man, I’m going to enjoy that score for…years. The only thing I love more than a Michigan loss is an ugly Michigan loss.

I know, I’m just tweaking the Michigan folks. I figure there are 119 teams from the old Div 1-A, A-State is the defending champ of 1-AA, therefore the #120.

I expected Michigan to win in a blow out, just like everybody who doesn’t live in Boone, NC. That may have been the biggest jaw dropper of a game ever played, no matter who yer home team is.

My wife worked in the athletic department for App state up until 3 years ago. (Right before they went on their title run). They crapped all over her when they changed ADs. Any way it is funny that many of the boosters wanted Jerry gone because he couldn’t win the big one. They have had some serious talent for a while but finally put it all togeather. They have a young off coordinator who played there and does a nice job. The defensive staff has been around for while. We were ecstatic about the win :em95: and it is telling that Lloyd Carr couldn’t even be bothered to learn the proper pronunciation of the school name and scrubbed that in the post game press conference. Goodbye Lloyd! That was also the last good team that will play them for a while. I’m sure that was part of the calculus in Michigan’s decision. Also App State played Hawaii the team Michigan canceled to get this game and was spanked.
