I am currently (well, whenever I can find a minute, which is hard these days) busy reading SSgt David Bellavia’s “House to House”, a first-hand account of the fighting in Fallujah, that, full disclosure alert, Simon & Schuster were kind enough to offer me a review copy of (they know me and my tastes too well).

Expect a full review shortly, but so far I’m liking it a lot. Until then, you might want to take a look at this interview with the author along with some background.

    Misha,
He probably mentions some of the other soldiers’ names in this account. Does a Jamie Huber make an appearance anywhere? If he does, I would like to get a copy of the book for his mom. Thanks!

Went and read the reviews on Amazon. Sounds like a good first hand account of the battle.

I just put in a request at my library and should be able to pick it up in a couple of days.

Sire, may I also suggest “My Men are My Heroes” by Nathaniel Helms about 1st Sgt. Brad Kasal, Navy Cross recipient at Fallujah, and also “No True Glory” by Bing West. Both are excellent treatises on the most pivotal battle in the Iraqi Campaign. It is absolutely amazing what those Marines did.

I went online, and my library doesn’t carry “My Men are My Heroes”, but they do have “No True Glory” by Bing West, however, it’s listed under West, Francis J. as the author.

Put “No True Glory” on my list to reserve.

Funny thing, I hadn’t been to the library site in about 5 months and I got an E-mail tonight that a book I requested about 6 months ago was waiting for me at at the Central branch. It was popular with 8 or 9 requests in front of me, hell I’d forgotten I wanted to read it.

The forgotten treats are the best eh SoCal?

That’s funny about West, Francis J. He’s known as Bing, even writes under it, but I guess Francis is his real name.

Why am I suddenly thinking about “Stripes” and Sgt.Houka, the Big Toe.

“Don’t call me Francis. Call me Francis and I’ll kill ya”.

    “Lighten up Francis”.

You’ll enjoy “No True Glory” SoCal.

The ISBN for “My Men Are My Heroes” is ISBN-13: 978-0-696-23236-7. Maybe that’ll help.

    Thanks crunch,

I’ll log it down. I have to say that my library system has very seldom disappointed me. It’s a sharing system between Glendale and Pasadena.

The only book they’ve had listed that I couldn’t get was one of Robert Spencers’s, and it’s listed as stolen.

Did someone just need to really read it, or did someone not want me to read it?

So far, he hasn’t made an appearance, kwong, but I’m not done yet. I’ll let you know if he does.

And thanks for all of the recommendations, people. It’s almost as if you think I actually have time on my hands for my favorite pastime, reading books ;) I’ll definitely keep the list handy if I do find the time, however.

Actually, Brendan, I didn’t do a thing. They found me. Yes, my reputation must be spreading far and wide, Heaven help us :em95:

I appreciate the opportunity, though. I love reading, not to mention that I love reading books that I might never have heard of otherwise. Only danger, from the publisher’s point of view, is that I don’t like it, but they’re very good at selecting books for me so it hasn’t happened yet :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence :)

I’ve been approached about that in the past, but not by Big Media (yet). Which is probably just as well, seeing as how I’d have to turn them down. Privacy issues and, with all of the nutcases in the world, security issues as well. Not that I mind so much personally, but I have a family that I have no right to jeopardize just to feed my own vanity, enormously ravenous though it is ;)

I’m happy to do reviews, however, since I love to read. I do “pick and choose” with the offers, though, partly because I can’t possibly find the time to read all of the books I’m offered, but also because there’d be little point in a publisher sending me a copy of a book that I know from the description that I’ll hate, and I’d be unable to be anything but honest in my review of it. So yes, I “filter” a bit when I’m offered a copy.

This is an old post so I don’t know if anyone will wander back here, but I got House to House from the library yesterday about noon. I was so riveted by his tale of Fallujah that I had to know what was going to happen next. I finished the book around midnight.

It really was an eye opener as to what we ask our soldiers to do over there. Hell, not just over there, anywhere we have sent them and expect to send them in days to come.
