Oh wait, that won’t work. Chickens are meat too, after all. From Her Imperial Highness we get the following laugh riot of a story from the by now thoroughly discredited rag, The Lancet. Really, they ought to stick to ridiculously hyper-inflated civilian casualty figures in reports always strangely coinciding with the Fall season of U.S. election years. How many civilians have we murdered in Iraq by now, according to The Lancet?

600,000? 6,000,000? 45 quadrillion-zillions? Anyway:

LONDON - Eating less meat could help slow global warming by reducing the number of livestock and thereby decreasing the amount of methane flatulence from the animals, scientists said on Thursday.

Reducing the number of brain farts issuing forth from the lunatic asylums that we formerly referred to as “educational institutions” would also help, we’re sure. We could start by making them stop breathing, for instance. Permanently. Which would have the added bonus of saving a boatload of taxpayer funds.

In a special energy and health series of the medical journal The Lancet, experts said people should eat fewer steaks and hamburgers. Reducing global red meat consumption by 10 percent, they said, would cut the gases emitted by cows, sheep and goats that contribute to global warming.

The cows would fart less if we didn’t eat them? Er, OK… If you say so.

“We are at a significant tipping point,” said Geri Brewster,

More specifically, a COW tipping point.

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

…a nutritionist at Northern Westchester Hospital in New York, who was not connected to the study.

Nor, for that matter, with anything even remotely resembling the real world that the rest of us inhabit.

“If people knew that they were threatening the environment by eating more meat, they might think twice before ordering a burger,” Brewster said.

Yep. We’d probably order three instead. With double meat. And a couple of beef brats on the side.

Other ways of reducing greenhouse gases from farming practices, like feeding animals higher-quality grains, would only have a limited impact on cutting emissions.

How about feeding them Beano©?

Gases from animals destined for dinner plates account for nearly a quarter of all emissions worldwide.

“That leaves reducing demand for meat as the only real option,” said Dr. John Powles, a public health expert at Cambridge University, one of the study’s authors.

Nah. We’ll offset our guilt over our dinner’s methane “pollution” by cutting CO2 emissions. By strangling idiot “scientists.”

The amount of meat eaten varies considerably worldwide. In developed countries, people typically eat about 224 grams per day. But in Africa, most people only get about 31 grams a day.

And just look at how well-nourished and healthy they are!

With demand for meat increasing worldwide, experts worry that this increased livestock production will mean more gases like methane and nitrous oxide heating up the atmosphere. In China, for instance, people are eating double the amount of meat they used to a decade ago.

STARVE THE BASTARDS! After all, starvation is so much better than watching the temperature maybe, possibly, for unknown reasons rising about 2 tenths of a degree over a century.

Powles said that if the global average were 90 grams per day, that would prevent the levels of gases from speeding up climate change.

A number that he pulled fresh from his overpaid, underworked arse for the occasion. Which was a pity, seeing as how it worked rather well as a methane plug.

Eating less red meat would also improve health in general. Powles and his co-authors estimate that reducing meat consumption would reduce the numbers of people with heart disease and cancer. One study has estimated that the risk of colorectal cancer drops by about a third for every 100 grams of red meat that is cut out of your diet.

I always knew it had to be a bloody conspiracy. G-d made us omnivores with sharp, pointed canine teeth just so He could watch us all die from colorectal cancer!

“As a society, we are overconsuming protein,” Brewster said. “If we ate less red meat, it would also help stop the obesity epidemic.”

“As a matter of fact, if we stopped eating ALTOGETHER all of our troubles would be OVER, OVER I TELL YOU!”, the madman screeched as the nice men in the white coats dragged him off to another bout of electroshock therapy.

Experts said that it would probably take decades to wane the public off of its meat-eating tendency. “We need to better understand the implications of our diet,” said Dr. Maria Neira, director of director of the World Health Organization’s department of public health and the environment.

“It is an interesting theory that needs to be further examined,” she said. “But eating less meat could definitely be one way to reduce gas emissions and climate change.”

The best part is that the overeducated simpletons keep throwing out assertions like that without ever once, not once offering a shred of actual evidence in support of their claims. And what truly has us in stitches with hysterical laughter is that there are knuckle-dragging dunces out there who keep gobbling it all up without as much as a raised eyebrow.

G-d is both merciful and in possession of a great sense of humor, or surely He would have eradicated those clowns from the face of the Earth a long time ago.

We know that we would have.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

So … is that what did the dinosaurs in then? They farted too much and warmed themselves out of existence? And all this time, I thought it was an errant asteroid. But it must have been global warming, because those critters must have manufactured a prodigious amount of methane. At least the giant herbivorous ones must have. Ultrasaurus, apatosaurus, mamenchisaurus, and all of the other sauropods - what else? All the ceratopsians and hadrosaurs … that’s a lot of big gassy animals! And yet the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods lasted how long? About 140 million years combined, I think. Humans have had domesticated cattle for how long? And how long have we been driving cars? And we’re all gonna die from global warming when? Before the next asteroid shows up?

Vegans. Stupid buggers, saying veganism is ‘natural’- yeah, pointy teeth, relatively short GI tracts, EFAs and aminos in meat, iron balance, etc., etc.,

Not to mention that they need lots of artificially produced supplements to stay healthy.

Sure, we eat too much meat. We exercise (as a culture) far too little, and we pour large amounts of unhealthy shit down our gobs all the time. I’m watching as China balloons out into fatty-dom as the kids eat KFC and McD’s all the time- can’t wait for the three-generational die-off to start. (long lived grandparents, average parents, spoiled fatbastard little brat kids, all at the same time!- it’s coming fast)

And who’s fault is all this? Ours.

Responsibility for personal health is personal, and very few things tick me off more than someone telling me what I can and cannot do to my body. If I want to be fat and unhealthy, and eat lots of delicious, succulent, red meat (then wash it down with good vino and have a nice cigar) that’s my own damn business.

Weaselly, politically minded nannying fucking vegans and PETArds are using every straw they can cling to to push their dietary agenda, and it’s beginning to wear a little thin.

Bad science (and the science- social, cultural, nutritional and biological behind veganism is deeply flawed and politically influenced) plus nannyism plus plain nosiness and interference with MY personal freedoms makes me very grumpy.

It’s a good thing that in a mere 6.5 hours I’ll be eating prime beef, smoking cigars, playing poker, and getting righteously shitfaced with my friends at a relative’s wake.

Life is short, unpredictable and sometimes cruel. Why spoil it.

“There is nothing under the sun better for man than to eat, drink, and be merry. Go, therefore, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with cheer.”
    Ecclesiastes 8:1

Anyone who cares to join me is welcome to raise a glass, a smoke, or an indulgent bite to all of those who truly lived their lives, rather than existing in fear of the death which awaits us all.

chuck–if I bold your name, all things go bold–no disrespect intended

The amount of CO2 we exhale is really trivial to what comes out of a cow. Because of the fermentation in their guts, the cows exude methane (in large quantities if I remember the main study correctly). That is a way stronger greenhouse gas.

However, I think people should eat what they want. It’s a free country. I don’t eat meat and am happy to lower my heart attack and cancer risk (way high heart attack risk–diabetes). However, I am happy when my friends enjoy their steaks.

Now that I’ve had my fill of The Vodak….I say we need more Rhinos (not RINOs) and elephants. Millions of them shitting all over the place. Then we can sell African nations more carbon credits so their critters can go unchecked with their methane “deposits” into the atmosphere. Each elephant/rhino bowel movement is what, 15x that of a cow. Not to mention the undigested mutton the other critters put out on the playa.

This way we can sit with amusement as when the cow methane “problem” is gone, there will be an overcrowding of elephants and rhinos to take its place. And who would kill a perfectly good elephant just to control methane?

I so love irony and fallacies of arguements.

    fanbladesaresharp
This is not a comment on the accuracy of the original statements. This is a response to the previous post.

The argument has absolutely nothing to do with bowel movements–it has to do with gas. Cows are ruminants and have an unusual digestive tract with multiple stomachs and several types of bacteria, some of which ferment what the previous bacteria have produced. That produces the gas methane.

Rhinos and elephants produce some methane. Rhinos have a different way of fermenting (non-ruminant) and produce less methane. Elephants do make huge amounts of methane.

Actually, some of us make methane. Everybody has slightly different populations of bacteria in our guts, which result in slight differences in the chemical composition of emissions. (Is that subtle enough?)

I mean who on earth would EVER come up with these statements and still declare themselves “scientifictly researched”?!?!? Now, I have nothing against vegetarians, or vegan, or tadpole swallowers, if it makes them happy, but where in the world of intelligent reasoning do these so-called “scientists and researchers” get this data? Part of the “Go Green” industry, obviously, but this is pushing the absurd into the grotesque, and I am absolutely certain that a number of “planet savers” will cut out meat altogether from their diet because of this ridiculous article without ever asking where the data came from, or if it is even valid. Now we are told what to eat and in what quantity without even a semblance of intelligent argument loosely tied to this nonsense. I dread the day when some politicans will make this public policy and start rationning meat “for the sake of the planet” (we have a few of these “we know what’s good for you politicians” here in Canada as well)just because it ties in with the “global warming” nonsensical myth. Just for spite, I am going to BBQ the juiciest, thickest piece of beef I can possibly find and send a picture of myself doing it to these idiots at the Lancet. Hehehehehe…

    Medical-research-sciencey type here -

The Lancet, and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) taken together have become the house organ for a loosely-defined group I call SUOSASA - the Society for the Use Of Statistics to Advance the Socialist Agenda. I have written them several sarcastic letters congratulating them on the generosity of their new, expanded editorial policy; they so far have failed to see the humor in my letters. :em41:

Agenda-driven research fraud is rampant in medical journals. In an anonymous poll of 3200 researchers published in Nature, back in 2005, over a third admitted to changing results due to pressure from study sponsors.

A few years ago, there was an article published in the New England Journal of Medicine - I wish I could recall the author’s name - which contained not a single factual sentence and got published anyway. The author did it on purpose - to demonstrate how easy it was to fool high-powered sciencey types.

For my part I am feeding roughly 20 people all the freshly barbecued ribs they can handle this Saturday night, firing up the pit with charcoal for heat and hickory for flavor. Does it count as a carbon offset that I’ll be taking out a half dozen hogs for the cause? Their sphincters have been silenced. They shall fart no more forever. For Uchuck the Tuchuk, your planned gathering sounds absolutely fantastic, ribs and all the fixings!!! My wife and I wish we could “drop in” and share the good times, but I am somewhat disappointed to see that you did not invite anyone from “the Lancet”!? Maybe if they tasted a good serving of your ribs, knock back a few cold ones and share in the good spirit, idiotic articles like the one they just published would cease to appear all together. Heck, I am half-tempted to send you a pile of our canadian bacon to throw in for good measure. Hope you have the best barbeque ever, my American friends, and to hell with methane emissions!

It’s a damn lucky thing we shot all those bison herds back in the 1800s. (Now, we’re going to have to work on the exploding whitetail population. And yes, I am volunteering.)

The AMA (ironically founded to counter medical fraud) has a long history of trying to mislead its membership for political (read: left-wing) political gain. The best recent example was back in 1999 during the Clinton impeachment hearings, when then Journal of the American Medical Association editor Lundberg dusted off an old study purporting to show that a majority of college students did not define oral sex as “sex.” (This was deemed so blatant that Lundberg was forced to resign, but the agenda of JAMA hasn’t changed a whit.)

BTW, only about one out of three physicians belong to the AMA. Most of us can see the rubbish they, The Lancet and the NEJM peddle for what it is.

You have my sympathies. Bad enough Canada not only has the nanny-state politicos who want to run your lives, but also the Fruitfly Man - whassis name - David Suzuki, that grant-whore, yapping off non-stop about what’s good for everyone else. Here in New Yorkistan we have one too, Mayor Mikey Bloom-turd. He’s now throwing a hissy fit because a court turned down his demand that fast food emporiums print a list of the calorie contents of their offerings for the “good” of their patrons. :em99: :em99: Like anyone who’s looking for a triple by-pass, comfort food fix in one of those places gives a shite about the calorie content.

Cheryl. Believe it or not, but our so-called “government leaders” have made it mandatory for fast-food places like Wendy’s and McDonald’s to clearly display the amounts of fats and calories in all of their servings here in Canada. As if someone who rushed in a fast-food outlet for an extra-large cheeseburger with all the trimmings, extra-large fries and extra-large soda REALLY cares about the amount of “trans-fat, non-saturated, oxynated name-them additives with four billions calories they absord, but hey, our civil servants enjoy telling us what is good for our health, what is bad, what is acceptable, what is politically-correct, etc, you name it, they have it covered and then-some! And the worst Cheryl, it that very few people in my country see anything wrong with this!!! Sometimes I feel David Suzuki is about to have a shrine built in his honour, and woes on the person who would dare say anything derogatory about the man. He has become an expert fear-monger, pointing out to everything and anything and seeing the worst at any given time. And yes, he and is rabid followers are not above tinkering with “facts and research data” to cover their agendas. Public funds are so much easier to obtain in the name of whatever “cause du jour” that way. Fearmongering, constant government interference and public apathy are conspiring to make a once great country into another nanny-state where the citizens expect, no, DEMAND that their government be involved in every minute aspects of their lives. Although our soldiers are fighting vigorously in Afghanistan, we, as a nation, seem thoroughly bewildered when asked to real reasons our troups were sent there in the first place. We have a very short memory span unfortunately… We have had generations of welfare recipients in this country, courtesy of power-hungry bureaucrats who enjoy lording over the unwashed masses. I love my country, but thoroughly loathe the never-ending government presence in all aspect of my life. I served in my country’s armed forces for 25 years, with pride, and never did I ever consider that one day, it would turn out nothing but whining, crying pussies bowing to every tree-hugging fad while waiting for more government interference. Thank you for your comments.

HAHAHAHA - looks like a pinata.

Here in the DC area, they try a similar thing with stop-light cameras. They install a stop-light camera on an intersection - in the name of “public safety” - and then decrease the duration of the yellow light from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.

There has been an increase in rear-end collisions around here, because people slam on their brakes in the attempt to avoid a ticket - but the local government and the IIHS seem pretty mum about this unintended consequence.
