Government Appeals Bail For USF Student

TAMPA - One of two University of South Florida students and Egyptian nationals will be allowed pretrial release on $200,000 fully secured bail and house arrest with an electronic monitor, a U.S. magistrate determined at a hearing today.

Although Magistrate Elizabeth Jenkins agreed with the prosecution that Youssef Megahed is a dangerous man, she said the government did not prove a specific danger. [Emph Mine]

Let’s see the two young Egyptian males are students at the University of South Florida and just happened to be on a little trip around the block to South Carolina and perchance in the vicinity of a U.S. military facility that has been previously used for interrogation of illegal combatants aka Terrorists. What to take for a little outing? Pipe Bombs, fuses and ammo. Later we find various other items of jihadi training materials, yet the gubmint didn’t prove Youssef Mega-DickHed was a specific danger? The rational mind has to wonder exactly what Magistrate Jenkins considers a specific danger, other than actually detonating the explosives in a populated area? Nothing to see here either folks, move right along.

The government immediately filed an appeal, which means Megahed can’t get out of jail until at least next week to give time for a U.S. District Court judge to review the appeal.

At least the Feds see the obvious issue, cut that shit-bag loose and the only thing that will beat him out of the country is the pilots at the front of the jet speeding off the runway. They’ve already decided that he’ll be released from house arrest for religious purposes, I’m sure Wahhabi practices include the Cairo Two-Step.

It was a looong day, very long and I’m fighting off something nasty, that seems to be inhabiting my G-I system as well as my sinuses and ears. Damitall. Just go read the whole thing, because I gurandamntee this story will remain buried by the Dead Tree Media, after all we’re so much more interested in that waste of Oh-Two OJ “I killed two people and all I got was a lousy book-deal” Simpson and his latest gaffe in Vegas.

Forget the fact that the pipe bombs and other party favors should have resulted in a “no bail, not now not ever” order from the court, I notice that it seems to matter to you that this was an Egyptian who was freed. Would it have made a difference to you if he had been a white, ex-Army Ranger from Pendleton, New York? I mean, it was just kinda strange that you would emphasis his nationality, when his activity alone should have been sufficient to hold him anchored by this thumbs to a wall.

And yet the libtards want to treat the GWOT as a law enforcement problem.

    Let’s review, shall we?

The perps of the 1993 bombing in the World Trade Center is in custody. They should be dead, but at least they are in custody and can’t do it again.

The perps of 9/11 are dead, but the people behind them are hiding out in the mountains of Pakistan living a pretty comfortable life, while we root around fighting a totally unrelated enemy this administration would like us to think were the ones who attacked us.

So, it appears that the arrest the perps routine seems to have a much better chance of actually getting those people responsible, and the fucking around pissing everyone else off only seems to be creating even more terrorists.

Hey, hold the horses a second! Why do all the damn Hajis have to go to school in MY home frigging state?

Should we start profiling Floridians? I mean, they went for Bush twice, AND they have some nutcases going to school down there… hmmm. :em99:

Expect much more of that unless we stop this from seizing power…

I don’t think people are going to buy that routine again.

I personally don’t want to see Hillary win the nomination, but she would be heads and shoulders above anyone currently in the Republican bull pen — including today’s announcement of Alan Keyes.

I hope they kill the judges turning them loose rather than innocent people.

That’s an awful thing to say. You make it sound like they HAVE to kill someone, so it had better be a judge instead of an “innocent” person. Are you saying that a Judge is not innocent?

I know, Skyechild, I live here and have seen the degeneration of a once magnificent place. If not for my wife I would have left long ago. I’ve lived in Illinois, home of Blowjobovich; Kentucky, and yes here. But I’ve set foot in half of the states, loved all of them for one thing or another. But I was born in LA, raised as a youngster in the bay area forty-five years ago, during my high school years lived in the then semi-wilderness area east of Sacramento on highway fifty, say sixty miles from Tahoe. Now safely ensconced in a small, conservative bastion of sanity, a small town fifty miles north of Fresno. The kind of place where neighbors are relieved you own and shoot guns, rather than paranoid and fearful. But no doubt, this place is going down the shitter, one illegal at a time. And I’m a fucking native, on the endangered list!

This one isn’t, in case Mega-dead turns out to be not quite as “harmless” as the stupid c*nt claimed that he was.

I don’t see anything wrong is hoping that if he indeed is every bit as much of a Haji as he looks to be, then she gets to pay the price. On the other hand, if he’s quite the innocent lamb that she insists that he is, then nothing will happen, right? No harm, no foul.

All I and others are saying is that if she’s wrong, she’s responsible. She turned him loose, after all.

    Yer quite welcome.

No doubt the group in Alabama and their supporters are militants. If they are guilty of the charges against them especailly where the explosives are concerned and the targeting of mexicans, illegal or not,I Have no problem with these goofy bastards getting the book thrown at ‘em.

HOWEVER what I do have a problem with is the tired ol meme about race, racial profiling, race baiting, race, race, race…it never ends seemingly from the left.

For millions of Americans dare I say the MAJORITY of Americans like me, we judge a man by his actions, his character, and the life he leads; not the color of his skin, or where he is from. Frankly I’m sick and tired of the poisionous race baiting from people like Je$$e Jackson, Al NotSo-Sharpton and others on the left.

It’s not so much race in this case although DJ tried to implicate that, as to where these people are from that was emphaised. Eygypt is a hot bed of terror related activity, it’s well documented and well known.

In fact if studied closely some of the roots of the current Bin Laden terror movement, STARTED in Eygypt. And contrary to popular misconceptions it is not based entirely on the Whabbi movement. In fact there are some Whabbi Muslims that have denounced Bin Laden and tried to distant the movement from the misconception in the press.

Although The Whabbi movement is very very strict in its interpertation of Islam, Bin Laden actually follows a offshoot system (the actual name for it escapes me; I’ll look it up) that had it’s foundings by a radical militant in none other than E-Y-G-Y-P-T.

I’m off for the salt mines, I’ll do the research later and post some links.

There is a difference between stockpiling for a possible defense situation and being physically in position to affect a American military base.

The real kicker is that our legal system seems to think that the only truly evil people are Christian Americans. Anything any other Religion or Nationalty does is instantly forgivable.

As a born again Agnostic, I have no real Dog in the Religious battle.

My problem is that an American in the same situation with the same materials, would be persecuted beyond belief.

There is a difference between stockpiling for a possible defense situation and being physically in position to affect a American military base.

They were planning a massacre of Mexicans. That’s not “a possible defense situation.”

[they planned] a machine-gun attack on Mexicans in Remlap, a town just north of Birmingham, and went there on a reconnaissance mission April 20.

Something none of their defenders at the opinionbug site noted- right to bear arms is one thing, but if you plan a crime using them, then the legality of the arms in question is moot.

Last I checked, murder, even murder of illegal immigrants, was fairly hefty crime.

Is it just me, or does USF seem to be turning into Jihadii Central, of late?

Forget the fact that the pipe bombs and other party favors should have resulted in a “no bail, not now not ever” order from the court, I notice that it seems to matter to you that this was an Egyptian who was freed. Would it have made a difference to you if he had been a white, ex-Army Ranger from Pendleton, New York? I mean, it was just kinda strange that you would emphasis his nationality, when his activity alone should have been sufficient to hold him anchored by this thumbs to a wall.

Well, as a matter of fact, Yes. Yes it would.

At some point, as one reads recent history, “Young Arab Male” ceases to be racial profiling, and becomes a discription of the suspect.

No, not all terrorists are Arab, Islamic males. But when the odds run north of 95% for several years, the Adults have to consider looking at such things.

Mayhaps it would be more cost effective to turn said students over to the Military Police of the station nearest? The state of Floriduh (No insult to my follw Rotts, who are obviously a bit sharper than the average…) would not have to incarcerate, interrogate, feed, clothe, house, entertain and provide amenities for said students. And I’m positively certain that the targ, er… former intended recipients of these students agressive protest actions would be MORE than willing to show the appropriate, er… hospitality. Yeah, thats it…

You find me in full agreement with you! “Profiling” is not something done on “racial” or “perceived” grounds, but on precedent. It is not people from Romania, Greece, New Zealand or Peru that turn themselves into “martyrs for allah”, the arabs have brought that upon themselves by the too-numerous-to-mention terrorist acts past and present. If profiling help in discovering yet another would-be murderous piece of sh@t for allah, I, for one, is all for it. Regarding the judge, she definitely owns it if this guy goes and does something while he’s out on bail. I have a hard time when it comes to things like this, though, because of the Constitutional prohibition on excessive bail and fines. Still, I realize that people like this are probably too dangerous to be allowed to roam around free.

    Old Dog,

    You said

However the are in the He said/ She said category.

Fair enough, but all court cases are until tried. I’m sure the Egyptians are crying innocent too…

It’s my understanding that neither of these cases have been tried and proven yet (I could be wrong, it’s a little off my stomping grounds here).

In that case, they are on equal footing in my mind:

    1. Either young men near a military base innocently transporting homemade fireworks (that look suspiciously like pipebombs) and a legal militia of innocent men with their cache of 70+ IEDs and homemade grenades for defensive use (though both ‘firework’ pipebombs and ‘defensive’ IEDs are illegal, let’s put that aside for a moment)

    2. Two groups of ethnically disparate but equally nutty wackos planning to commit serious crimes.

I personally think they both are firmly in group 2. To me, they’ve both been caught in compromising positions with supplies of illegal explosive devices, and I don’t care to extend either the benefit of the doubt. They’ll get their day in court, and have a very hard time disputing the evidence.

As for the BATFE, I can’t speak for them, not familiar enough- but I do recognize the precedent that if one set of homemade explosives becomes legal, then all homemade explosives will soon follow.

If it was entrapment, well, I don’t like that one bit- but I prefer my law to be enforced evenhandedly (at least so far as possible- people aren’t machines, and impartiality is not easy)

this mightn’t be terribly well put toghther, but it’s late here. I’ll check back in tomorrow morning.

Quit with the race baiting bullshit already woulja deej..it really is getting rather old to have the left trot out the race card.

It never would have caught my eye or caused me to comment if JB hadn’t italicized the word Egyptian to emphasize that these were two people somehow fit a stereotype.

Let’s see the two young Egyptian males

    Young Egyptian males = “terrorists”.

I’m sure these folks wern’t poor oppressed ‘brown people’…and only one was allowed bail

Any bets that Michael Wayne Bobo was the government’s snitch?

Notice that I said that neither of the “young Egyptian males” should have been released? Not because they were “Egyptian” “male” or even “young”, but because of the circumstances of their alleged crimes. If Donny Osmond had been caught and charged with that crime, I wouldn’t want him released either.

But I think you missed the point, CiSSnarl5.7, it doesn’t matter to me what the nationality of any of these suspects. It doesn’t even bother me that it was mentioned. What made me notice was that JB emphasized the nationality because he obviously felt that because these two were Egyptian, they shouldn’t have been let go just because. There was no other reason to highlight the fact that they were Egyptian other than that.

All I and others are saying is that if she’s wrong, she’s responsible. She turned him loose, after all.

Whatever he does after he’s free, she OWNS.

Yes she does. She probably shouldn’t have let him loose. However, it isn’t as if he is free, he is being electronically monitored with at least an ankle bracelet, but more than likely an implant. Maybe both. It is possible that this guy might be used to lead authorities to other people — with or without his knowledge or help.

But don’t think for a minute that this guy is just going to be going out to commit acts of terrorism. They will know where he is within fifty feet at any given time. If he slips his bracelet, they will know immediately, and because of his jacket, they will already be keeping a close and watchful eye on him. You can bet the US Marshalls will have a round-the-clock detail on him.

Chalk it up to a difference in viewpoints Deej, I saw it as the emphasis was applied to draw attention to the outrageous fact that two middle eastern males caught red handed, with explosives in the vincinity of a U.S. Military base, somehow can’t be viewed as a danger according to this half wit judge.

Isn’t it just mind-boggling to hear about a “morality police” in the 21st century!?

I called it the “Morality Police” but in fact in Arabic they are called “Mutwhas”..not sure exactly how that tranlates to an English word, but from what I’ve heard they have unlimited power’s of arrest, the slightest infraction can wind one up in serious trouble.

If you (especially a female) survive the punishment metted out by the Mutwhas, you still have to face the family, and dishonor to the family is punishable by death, commoningly referred to as an “Honor Killing” in the West.
So when these kids are doing that sort of stuff with thier phones, they are really pushing the envelope.

Last I heard the Royal Family had issued a decree down south that sort of put the brakes on the Mutwhas, or tried to..but I doubt it’s had much effect.

    Oh, where to begin…

So the answer is to shoot all of the Saudis to somehow make them “civilized”? How does that make us different from them?

Much of their problems are directly a result of their government — which we support. I know it is easy to say they should do what we did and rise up and overthrow their government. That might have been relatively easy when the rulers were using flintlocks, but they are using weapons we gave them.

    MuscleDaddy @ 52

So you’re suggesting that (as apparently others have bought into) despite the fact that they know enough about the country to be enrolled in an American University, they were somehow too stupid/disconnected to know that they:

Ignorant would be a better description, apparently:

Both men entered the country on student visas and enrolled in January at the University of South Florida’s English Language Institute. They are recipients of a Saudi government scholarship designed to boost post-Sept. 11, 2001, Saudi enrollment in U.S. schools and ease hostility toward Americans.

The men speak little English and said they wanted only to tour an American high school and didn’t realize they weren’t allowed on the bus.

They were here learning about our country, on a program set up by Bush and his good buddy Bandar.

I am sure that the authorities examined them and their story with lice combs from every possible angle, and determined it to be just what they said it was: a cultural mixup.

Didn’t know that School busses are bright yellow

Is that the international color of school buses? Does that mean that any bus that color anywhere else in the world (and more specifically Saudi Arabia) has to be only used for school?

I have been in a lot of countries where the public transportation is a yellow “school bus”. If I came from one of those countries I would probably make the assumption that it was public transportation also.

    b) Couldn’t read “Hillsborough County School System” writ large down the side

Which prompted them to actually get on the bus because they were going to tour the high school. They obviously didn’t know that only the kids are allowed to ride.

    c) Just didn’t notice that ALL of the other riders were school children.

Maybe they did notice. Maybe they made the assumption that they were the only ones wanting a tour of the school.

Were they “stupid” for not asking whether it was alright to ride the bus or not? Sure. It seems to me that they could have asked someone ahead of time what the procedure would be to take a tour of an American high school. Perhaps their school advisor or someone like that.

So, instead of thinking that these guys are probably running some sort of ‘No Habla’ game….

…you just believe that the Little Brown People are really just that stupid.

No, I would call it being ignorant.

Okay, now I am confused again.

If this cache of assault weapons had been in Misha’s garage would we need to alert the public with details? Shouldn’t the NRA be all up in arms (no pun intended) over the government confiscating this cache of guns? I thought there was a right to bear arms somewhere…

Yup. Even with the open borders and repeated, unambiguous threats that the Jihadis CONTINUE to make against us, Dave and his fellow Oxygen-stealing Ostriches™ poo-poo the coming 7th Century Savage shitstorm of murder and mayhem somewhere in our country’s schools.

I’ll even re-post the pics of a HARTline bus (Hillsborough County’s public transportation system) and a regular old school bus, for Dave’s re-edification.

Coming late to the party, BC?

Just go here and read his blithering moronicalness from last year, when the first Beslan-in-America test run was taken here in the Bay Area.

We’ve been there already — even took the yellow bus to get there.

Just go here and read his blithering moronicalness from last year, when the first Beslan-in-America test run was taken here in the Bay Area.

Well, oopsie-diddly, as I mentioned in Comment #48, there was a resolution to this story where the authorities (I am guessing every alphabet agency we have) felt that they meant no harm — that it was actually a cultural misunderstanding.

Ordinarily, I would be just as suspicious as you — in fact, if you actually look at my “blithering moronicalness” from last year, I wasn’t sold on the idea of it being an innocent ‘misunderstanding’. But I defer to the experts — the authorities, that I suspect have just a smidgeon more knowledge on such things than you or I. If they are satisfied, then so am I.

Yet the chimp you twice voted into office is pressing hard to let Mexican trucks travel anywhere within the United States. Congress is trying to stop it, yet Bush has threatened another veto.

Of course this was all started by the first Bush, and pushed through by Clinton, his new best friend.

Here is a thought: The amount of time both Bush I and Clinton spend together, do you think that papa might have wished Bill were his son instead of Junior?

    Just askin’.

I’ll even re-post the pics of a HARTline bus (Hillsborough County’s public transportation system) and a regular old school bus, for Dave’s re-edification.

Damn, my own re-edification. I call it a repeat.

I did mention that a lot of countries I’ve been to don’t have buses that look like the HARTline buses. They look a lot like a yellow school bus — mainly because that was what they once were.

I am guessing that these two Saudis were the equivilent of our hillbillies — they ain’t used to our high-falutin’ ways.

They were part of a “get acquanted” program, kind of a take a foreign bumpkin to the USA for a tour program. The news accounts said that they barely spoke English, and probably understood very little about our culture here.

You want to assume that these two were well-versed in our culture, and understood what they were doing. The authorities didn’t see it that way — and I doubt that with all of the redundancy of these types of things there would have been at least one agency that would have charged if there was something there.

Oh, if you want to post some buses, you just know I can’t resist this:

Drinkin’ that ‘lectric KoolAid, DJ? Furthur is a symbol of the free-wheeling, free-thinking culture that really only exists in the U.S. Would that the islamists would get on that bus–turn on, tune in, drop out of the jihad! That’s not really the point, here. The point is that there is a willful ignorance in this country of the enemies who are infiltrating and attacking us. When they conduct probes or dry-runs, it is not just a cultural misunderstanding or an innocent tour. It is a prelude to terror. They are not so stupid and ignorant as you seem to suppose. I would not have thought that you were either.

    AyUaxe @ 61:

I posted the picture because it was a funny contrast to the HARTline comparison BC posted.

When they conduct probes or dry-runs, it is not just a cultural misunderstanding or an innocent tour. It is a prelude to terror.

Back up the terror bus for a moment.

Perhaps you should read the outcome of this case first. There was no “probe” or “dry run” here. To believe there was is to also believe that every expert and every agency who looked into this particular case was wrong.

There are acts of terrorism happening in this country on a daily basis. Almost all of it caused by our own citizens. We usually call it by another names: murder, rape, assault, robbery, kidnapping, arson, burglary etc. Every now and then, a big one happens, and it may or may not be connected to an outside force.

Timothy McVeigh was one of ours. School shooters have popped up all ove the country. The term “going postal” was coined from several incidents involving the post office.

We have our own home-grown terrorism going on right now as we speak.

Here is one concerning a school bus full of children

Robbery Suspects Kill Infant Execution-Style, Seconds After Killing Boy’s Father

There is crap happening every day and ALL of it is no more or less than a terrorist act.

But the likelihood of a foreign terrorist coming here doing a “dry run” or something as idiotic as that ranks up there with you winning the Lotto or Powerball.

Is it impossible? Obviously not. But it isn’t likely.

You can choose to “be afraid, be very afraid” if you want. But understand that if you do, you have lost and have given the terrorist exactly what he wants: for you to be afraid.

Or you can choose to be vigilant, for unusual activity, but not dwell on whether there is going to be a terrorist attack on you.

    Deej,

Sorry to post so late but this is rank nonsense.

Your contention that the likelihood of a terrorist coming here to do a dry run is not likely is BS, pure and simple. Flying imams ring a bell? Sure, they weren’t foreign but they were being deliberately provocative for a reason, and I’m not ruling out anything. How about the guy with the battery and the wire stuck up his butt? Was that a case of cultural ignorance? They were dry runs, done to get information and also to be done in such a way as to give cover to those who would be a sheeple and say: “See, there was no danger, go back to sleep.”

It’s not a matter of being afraid. If some asshat chooses to act weird around me he’s liable to wake up dead with me going “Gee, I didn’t realize he was an idiot. He looked like he was going to do something dangerous, my bad.”

Let the asshats be afraid. As for me I call it being prepared. My Boy Scout training, what can I say.

As NevadaDailySteve notes, there’s plenty of support for the proposition that islamists are, whether directly planning particular terrorist acts or using dupes and surrogates to gather general security information, engaging in intentional probes and dry runs. The 9/11 hijackers didn’t just buy MS Flight simulator, they went to flight schools and people, some of them “officials,” just let them. That is willful ignorance, the ostrich approach and not only the ostrich gets killed because of it.

I would not have expected DJ to be ignorant of the significance of the bus, “Furthur.” In a crowd with some knowledge of modern U.S. history, it’s not just a funny pic, it’s a fairly heavy, if ambiguous icon. Anyone who doesn’t know who Neil Cassady, Ken Kesey, Owsley Stanley, and the Merry Pranksters were/are probably also doesn’t know where the Klintoons, Scary Kerry, Angela Davis, the Black Panthers and most of the left’s leadership and ideology come from either (not that they come from the same space–they really don’t–the Pranksters, up front and honestly went far beyond “inhaling” and were far too independent to kow-tow to the demoncrat party line–maybe not rugged, but certainly aggressively hedonistic individualism).

DJ also mistakes my comment for a signal that I’m flinching at terrorist shadows around every corner–it’s not Mork’s silly, “be afraid…”, it’s be angry and vigilant, very angry and vigilant. Any adult of any ethnicity who tries to get on a kids’ school bus is a strong potential threat and it is willfully ignorant, if not downright suicidal as a culture that everyone, particularly bus drivers, don’t immediately know that absolutely can’t be allowed, to the tune of boots in the face, slamming doors, and peeling out, if necessary. If it’s just some crazy or a curious tourist, so what? They can figure out where they went wrong later. A bus full of our childrens’ remains and C4 residue doesn’t allow for do-overs or apologies. Turning Mecca into a glass bowl, no matter how satisfying and ultimately good strategy, won’t bring back an elementary school class.

The islamists know about Breslan. They target schools and children in Israel, Afghanistan, Iraq, Thailand, etc. Don’t we know these things, too, or are we such ostriches that we’ve willfully forgotten? I haven’t and won’t forget or decline to use basic logic to connect the dots.

Do I distrust what the “officials” say about the bus riders, the guy in Dearborn, these guys in South Carolina? Damn straight, I do, ’cause it doesn’t jibe with objective reality, history, and common sense. I keep hoping that those same officials who can’t seem to get a clue in public are secretly tracking these scum when they’re released, but I do not trust the “officials” who, e.g., essentially allow the Muslim Brotherhood to vet islamic chaplains for the military or who continue to leak classified information to the press and our enemies, or who continue to yammer on about the ROP, or who hide behind their security details while telling me I shouldn’t have firepower to defend myself and my family. And that’s true whether they hail from the right or the left.

None of them did squat that was in their power to prevent 9/11 and they’re still hell bent on holding down the lever, ’til this nation goes fully down the toilet. As a thinking, armed, landowning individual and head of household, I have no intention of letting bureaucrats, ostriches, sheep, or useful idiots control what I think or do. Unlike the “officials,” I know I’ll have to take responsibility for my actions, before God if not sooner, so I fully intend to address threats and assess people based on reality, not the ostrich’s view.
