From LC & IB Mike Hendrix, here’s some delicious Prime Fred!™:

Q: “Some believe that the Second Amendment has different meanings in different places, and that the gun rights of citizens in, say, New York City and Chicago can restricted more than the gun rights of those in Tennessee and Montana. Do you agree?”

Thompson responds with a deep, rumbling, slow, “Noooope.” Then he follows with absolute catnip for gun owners: “It’s never seemed to me to be coincidental that the places that have the highest crime rates tend to be the places that have the most restrictions on gun ownership in America.”

Will he appoint an Attorney General who shares his opinion of the Second Amendment. “Yes.” More applause. “I think we’re winning on the interpretation of the Second Amendment. I have a complicated position on this: The Constitution means what it says.” He gets another standing ovation.

Oh yes, I know. The RudyMcRomneyBots will respond with “sure, that’s what he says, but how do you know?

I don’t.

But I’ll tell you this: If I have to choose between somebody who openly supports the 2nd Amendment and the Constitution as it is written, even if I don’t know for sure whether he’s just feeding me red meat or not, and a clown who not only has stated his disdain for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, but also has proven that he feels that way as, say, mayor of NYC…

If that seems like an awfully hard choice calling for “nuance”, then I suggest that you go right ahead and pull for Rudy in the primary.

But it’s a pretty damn easy call for me to make.

Oh, and as to the whole “Rudy is our best chance in the general election!” brouhaha, I offer you this opinion:

…people aren’t lining up to board the Rudy train because he’s another RINO, anti-gun, big city, northeastern politician; Kerry with an elephant; Dukakis with more red in his bunting. I’m about as “socially conservative” as… well, metaphor fails me. I’m not at all socially conservative, but I wouldn’t vote for Rudy Giuliani at gunpoint, and neither would anyone else I know South of the Mason-Dixon or West of the Mississippi. If the GOP wants a sure loss in ‘08, they’re welcome to continue with this big media Giuliani circle jerk, but don’t expect me to join in.

Do you need it any clearer? Should I break out the whiteboard and big, color markers for you?

Finally, to the whinging RudyBots in the media, the talking head shills for mediocrity who have been desperately, frantically digging around in their empty, RINO-sympathizing skulls for something to belittle the Fred Campaign with, I bring you this very succinct comment from Mickey Kaus, who is definitely not an Evil Right Wing Death Beast for Fred!:

Fred Thompson’s campaign had such a terrible, fumbling, disappointing first week that he’s already tied with Giuliani in the ARG poll and ahead by eight points in the Rasmussen poll.

Mheh.

Keep “fumbling and disappointing” like that, Fred!, and you’ll make Reagan’s victory in 1984 look like Florida 2000.

have a complicated position on this: The Constitution means what it says.

But I thought the Constitution was a living, breathing document? Any day now, I’m going to contact his campaign and see where I can help, and that would be the first and only time I’ve ever felt strongly enough about a candidate to do so.

Screw the pundits and the Fred Bashing. They wrote off Reagan in 1979 and look who was the best 2-term President of the Post World War II era. Come on Fred, keep on moving.

Oddly enough, they think a late start is bad. Well, Reagan started late, so did Nixon, Teddy Roosevelt in his re-election in 1906, etc….. most of the better ones waited for the heyenas to chew away and leave a few standing then made their own killing…..

Fred’s no lazy beast, he’s a rather patient old beast waiting for the herd to thin before he nails his Hillarybeast or Obamalope….CRUNCH!

I was just writing a post on how refreshing that Q&A was. When was the last time you saw a candidate for president answer a series of “Yes or No” question with “Yes or No” answers?

Granted, they were pretty f***ing easy questions, but throw either of those softballs at any of the members of the Karl Marx Admiration Society currently vying for the Democrat nomination for president, and see what kind of straight-forward response you (don’t) get.

A more fun question would be:
If an elected official attempts to use his or her official authority to pursue ends clearly contrary to the Constitution, is that a crime, and what kind of crime would it be, if not treason?

    Addendum:

    Fred’s no lazy beast,

Oh, he’s lazy alright, and that’s a Good Thing(TM). I hate to keep making the obvious comparisons, but Ronaldus Magnus was also tagged as ‘lazy.’ Mainly this was because he only devoted time, effort, and attention to things which were important - you know, stuff the Fed actually had both the authority and the ability to do something about.

It was quite a contrast to the modern tendency with every imaginable issue to develop a special commission, appoint a new cabinet-level officer; and pass some 1500-page Omnibus Perfectus bill creating a new federal agency to micromanage the problem at ever-increasing taxpayer expense.

Give me Reagan-style laziness any day of the week. I suggest when people call Fred ‘lazy’ you should just tell them, “Lazy’s fair” and walk away chuckling; most libs won’t get the joke. :em93:

OK … I’m about to sound like a campaign ad … but I am just really stoked about Fred!

Fred! is exactly the type of person (not just candidate) that most conservatives that I know have been waiting a very lonnnnnnnng time for.

As for campaigning, he has a gift that no other candidate (Rep or Dem) has:

“I have a complicated position on this: The Constitution means what it says.”

The gift is two-fold, really - the ability to convey his thoughts and ideas with a sort of down-home, Southern charm; coupled with the ability to speak effectively in sound bites.

In our ADD society, the latter of those gifts will put Fred atop a landslide … over Rudy, Mutt, and Shrillary.

His honesty, straightforwardness, kick-ass-and-take-names character are just a bonus (and a lifesaver) to us all.

I’m going to be taking a day off in January of 2009, to celebrate Fred’s inauguration …. and again in January 2013.

Sorry, guys, and I’m honestly not trying to be a troll here, but Fred seems kind of like a one-trick pony to me. Sure he’s for 2nd amendment rights, sure he thinks we should take out terrorists, but what is his stance on other issues? Personally I have only heard him talk about these two issues. What are his plans for taxation and the economy? Immigration? The education system? Health care? I greatly value my 2nd amendment rights, but until he is able to convince me that he is a solid candidate on *all* the important issues I will have to cast my vote elsewhere. I’m looking at Mike Huckabee right now, his stand on 2nd amendment rights is quite similar to Fred’s.

Freds got it right when he alludes to gun crime and bad gun laws.In Aussie, since the “gun buyback” when the total number of guns surrendered was equal to the number of chinese SSK’s imported to pay for the wheat we “gave” china, the rest of the stuff is still out there in the hands of reasonable and private citizens.Go figure.
Fred is the only candidate that I have seen so far that really gives a tinkers cuss about the freedom of the population and the pursuant of the bad guys, be they domestic or foreign. If I could vote he’s got mine.
