Clinton assails Bush’s ‘war on science’

Why yes, we did notice that RoveBushMcHitler are indeed carrying out a war on science, just last week my Imperial Correspondent’s spy network reported that the administration is working on a draft proposal to rescind gravity and lock-up those pesky Globull Worming Twoofers.

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton cited frustrated scientists and a comedian Thursday as she assailed President Bush’s record on scientific study and pledged to rescind his restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

Didn’t we already settle this issue? If embryonic stem cell research had any possibility whatsoever of a significant medical breakthrough the private sector would have hundreds of millions invested in it. It doesn’t. Conclusion….it’s a dead-end for now.

The presidential candidate also said she would bar political appointees from altering or removing scientific conclusions from government research without a legitimate reason for doing so.

No indeedy, we can’t have people actually attempting to revise and/or correct poorly conducted, biased research. It’s much better to spend another umpteen million (or so) to do another study. Notably absent is what exactly constitutes government research? Papers published directly by a federal agency or funded by the government?

“The Bush administration has declared war on science,” the New York senator said. “When I am president, scientific integrity will not be the exception it will be the rule.”

Her address to the Carnegie Institution for Science was a preview of what she said would be more detailed proposals in coming weeks on energy and environmental issues.

Gee whiz and here I thought the Air Force has made some incredible breakthroughs in missile defense systems, the human genome project is making huge advances in medicine. Whoda thunk Noodlespine was making war on those scientific advances?

Clinton focused mostly on policy proposals, but she also drew laughs for paraphrasing the faux right-wing fury of Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, saying “this administration doesn’t make decisions on facts, it makes facts based on decisions.”

As opposed to the Klintoon, focus-group, finger in the air, poll-driven decision making. It’s called Leadership, you cackling shrew.

The speech was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Sputnik satellite by the Soviet Union. The launch, which caught U.S. scientists by surprise, helped start the U.S.-Soviet space race and led to the creation of National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The candidate said as a little girl she was fascinated by Sputnik, but that today’s scientific challenges often come from political ideology instead of foreign powers.

So Sputnik was fascinating, but no mention of the U.S. going from it’s first manned space missions to landing on the moon, in less than a decade? Ideology interfering with exactly what science would that be? You can’t build a real straw-man with putting a head on him.

“For six and half years under President Bush, it has been open season on open inquiry,” Clinton said. “By ignoring or manipulating science, the Bush administration is putting our future at risk and letting our economic competitors get an edge in the global economy.”

But nobody expects the BushRovian inquisition. Off to the big comfy chair with the cankled one.

She said Bush’s limits on federal funds for embryonic stem cell research amounts to a “ban on hope.”

Once again, we’ll point out the obvious for the obtuse libtards. If the private sector won’t invest in it for sound reasons, don’t waste MY tax dollars on it either.

Republican National Committee spokesman Danny Diaz countered that Clinton “manipulates basic mathematics in her attempts to explain how she will pay for hundreds of billions of dollars in new spending.”

No need to state the obvious in there, they’ll load the spending right onto the backs of the middle-class and business taxpayers. Let the eeevil rich KKKapitalisit Kommisars pay for it all or find a friendly Asian somewhere, although they’re in short supply of late.

On the campaign trail, Clinton has repeatedly slammed what she calls Bush’s “war on science” and accused the administration of allowing conservative political ideology to interfere with research and scientific evidence. She cites administration officials who have questioned the scientific evidence of global warming and who have suggested a link existed between abortion and breast cancer.

Questioning Glowball Wallowing..it’s HERESY I tell you !!!! How can we possibly have any science with skeptics questioning ‘established’ fact?

As president, Clinton said she would:

• Expand human and robotic space exploration and speed development of vehicles to would replace the space shuttle.

Already happening can you say CEV ?

• Launch a space-based climate change initiative to combat global warming.

WTF? Well once Bush outlaws gravity, space would provide a solution for global warming, but we homo-sapiens wouldn’t like it much.

• Create a $50-billion strategic energy fund to research ways to boost energy efficiency and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

How about just allowing the private sector to drill our existing fossil fuels, wherever they, build new efficient refinement capabilities and dump the current federal regulations strangling the only immediately viable alternative, Nuclear?

But don’t let that stop you from finding more ways to get your claws into our wallets. Who needs Comedy Central when liberal lunacy at it’s finest is on display for free?

OK, here’s where I make the obvious point that most non-scientists wouldn’t care about, but I do: namely, that the Hildebeest has about the same degree of scientific competence as our dear President- which is to say, essentially none. (In case anyone was wondering, Political ‘Science’ is not actual science.)

(And before the Whattabout Chorus starts up - the same goes for the Goreacle(TM), Ann Coulter, and just about every other pundit out there with the notable exception of Dr. Savage.)

But I think people knew that.

    From the original material:

Clinton cited frustrated scientists and a comedian

The fact that she would try to hold both as credible on the matter says much in itself.

The presidential candidate also said she would bar political appointees from altering or removing scientific conclusions from government research without a legitimate reason for doing so.

I find it odd that anyone would think there *could* be any ‘legitimate’ reason to do so under any circumstances.

    [Quoth Shrillary:]
When I am president, scientific integrity will not be the exception it will be the rule.

That harridan wouldn’t know scientific integrity if it bit her in the ass - except maybe by its strangled screams of agony as it died from her viscous pygotoxins.

She said Bush’s limits on federal funds for embryonic stem cell research amounts to a “ban on hope.”

Yeah, she’s a demagoguing harpy. More on that later.

accused the administration of allowing conservative political ideology to interfere with research and scientific evidence.

And it would somehow be better to allow liberal, socialist, or any other political ideology to interfere?

She cites administration officials who have … suggested a link existed between abortion and breast cancer.

Granted, the statistical evidence that such a correlation actually occurs is equivocal (for those of you from Newark, that means it isn’t clear yet); but a medically valid mechanism which could produce such an effect *does* exist. No offense to the Goreacle(TM) but there is no consensus yet.

    • Launch a space-based climate change initiative to combat global warming.

And just how much CO2 will *THAT* spew into the atmosphere, hm?

    From LC Jackboot’s excellent fisking:

If embryonic stem cell research had any possibility whatsoever of a significant medical breakthrough the private sector would have hundreds of millions invested in it.

Not to be contrary, but you’re mistaken on both counts. There is indeed a range of significant and realistic potential applications for such research; and the private sector has already invested tens of millions (if not hundreds of millions) in small scale and preliminary research. Despite Fox’s lies, such research is not illegal in itself, and there are no restrictions on private funding.

Now for the problems. First of all, there is only a limited amount of the needed source material available. Similarly, there are only a limited number of ‘cell lines’ available. (Given that each cell line comes from a specific embryo, the two problems are closely related.) Second, most firms who are or want to be involved in embryonic stem cell research either can’t get enough private funding to expand, or (more likely) don’t want to be first to sink large amounts of capital into a field when the potential exists to tap into risk-free federal funding.

Imagining for a moment that federal funding were available, there would be an immediate surge in demand for not only quantity but diversity of raw material, which by definition comes only from embryos. Even loosening regulations to obtain ’surplus’ embryos will not suffice as there simply aren’t enough; production capacity, so to speak, is finite and not likely to increase. Similarly, allowing the cloning of embryos is not viable past a certain point; the process is expensive, has a low success rate, and will not produce the variety of ‘cell lines’ needed for effective research.

By now the astute reader will have realized that there is a ready, cheap supply of embryonic tissue if only sufficient demand (and regulatory permission) existed. We produce over a million ‘unwanted’ embryos per year; and if biotech firms start paying for them (with taxpayer funded grants, no less) that number is sure to increase.

Who needs Comedy Central when liberal lunacy at it’s finest is on display for free?

Unfortunately it’s a very expensive lunacy.

I stand corrected on both counts. I used some poetic license, fully knowing that the private sector has in fact spent quite a bit on embryonic research, but the decision makers weren’t comfy enough without fed funds to proceed. IOW they made a sound decision in light of existing circumstances. The pharmaceutical industry in particular spends hundreds of millions bringing products to market, often with no certainty of FDA approval, a labyrinthine process at best. That being said they’re also hamstrung by limited patent periods on generics, forcing them to recoup their entire R&D costs in a few years, before a competitor moves in.

My BAD and thanks for the correction.

I think you are correct that people who have had abortions would have the increased risk of breast cancer of women who have not have children. However, there is this misinformation going around that having an abortion will massively increase your chance of getting breast cancer.

There’s a whole book on the war on science. It’s not something she made up.

If there is some topic that advice is needed for, something like the National Academy of Sciences assembles a panel of the best and brightest in that field, they analyze the available data and issue a summary report. And that would be that. Now any such report is vetted by a political flunkie and altered if necessary to conform to Bush administration policy. That did not happen in previous administrations.

    Folks,

I have been reading every post with great interest. Again, it would NEVER be my place to tell my American friends how to run their country, but this Hillarious woman scares the living :em72: out of me! Our countries have national debts going into the, open parentheses “thousand of millions” for Canada, and “trillions” for the US” close parentheses, and this “Echo between my ears” person is going to throw away 50 billions (just to start) of your money to the “Go Green” industry. You wondered where her election money came from, it would be the first place I’d look… This woman is already assuming she will become president of the most powerful nation on earth, and is already giving signs of what’s in store for the US citizens. Maybe the good folks in America have not yet read her version of “Mein Kampf”. From what I have been reading about her, her comments caught here and there, and your posts, my guess is that this person would use your Constitution as a doormat and impose her “socialist views” on you all, since she “obviously knows better” than all of you, in her own mind. If she becomes the Prez, my question is, who will replace Monica in the White House? She’s a Clinton after all, is she not..? (cheap shot, I know…) And DJ, I AM being facetious!

My take on the matter is that it is all a game to them. They don’t really care about science, they care about getting elected. And if you really believe that no other administration vetted science or any other reports, think again. Slick Willy not spinning things to his advantage? Look at recent events, and he’s not even President now, and say it with a straight face. That shrew is an abomination. The Democratic Socialist Workers Racebaiters Party is a joke with a lot of money backing it up.

with the notable exception of Dr. Savage

Sorry, Duke, I missed this one. You would exclude “Doctor” Savage why? Because he holds a Ph.D in Ethnobotany? (which used to be called medical botany and was offered only at UC Berkley until 1999 when it was discontinued and rolled into other diciplines.)

I laugh everytime you people hold Michael Savage up as your “voice” and guiding light. If you knew him like I do, you would know he is as completely opposite in his private life as he portrays himself to be on the air. You are familiar with the old gag, “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV”? Well Michael Savage is no Conservative/Libertarian, but he plays one on the radio.

And laughs all the way to the bank. It’s like parody radio, and most of you don’t even know it. :em99:

Just as WE laugh every time you and your ilk hold Algore up as your “voice” and guiding light on global warming. From what I recall, he never passed a science course. Just what area is Algore’s Ph.D. in, btw?

Personally, I can only take Savage in small doses….I like his show but 3 hours of rage is something that I don’t need in my daily life.

and I second what SkyeChild said about gore…he’s the biggest braying poser on the planet.

The real reason why no liberal will vote to allow nuclear power:

    a) too much NIMBY syndrome

    b) Widespread use of nuclear power would actually allow modern society to continue without crippling itself in order to conform to the left’s demands for environmental regulations, and produce the improvement to the environment that they demand, thus destroying the base of their argument demanding the aforementioned crippling of society and industry.

    c) Several key senators and congresscritters represent areas which are heavily dependant on coal mining as their primary industry. Ending coal mining would infuriate their constituents and ruin their political careers.

There has been talk of initiating more nuclear power plants among liberals and environmentalists, given the perceived danger of global warming. NIMBY will be a issue–well I already live fairly close to Diablo Canyon NPP. We bought the house knowing that. I am not a typical liberal, but I would vote for more nuclear power plants, and I am not the only one.

Normal liberals work jobs and sometimes own houses and businesses and need to pay their mortgages and would not benefit from the crippling of society and industry. There probably are some fringe people out there that would desire such a thing–they go way to the left of liberals.

You are probably right about the coal issue, although I’m not sure you have to end coal mining–you can modify the plants to produce less CO2.

No, we worked at the same station years ago, long before his political show. He had a nutrition show and recorded a weekly infomercial for a national sponsor. I was a disk jockey at the time.

So says Dr. Dumbfuck, who still hasn’t shown us his Harvard & Yale sheepskins.

Well, since I know the messenger, and know that you are all being duped.

Look, I could care less if you fall for the schtick. If you want to believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and Michael Savage — have fun with that. Its just hilarious to me, that’s all.

Psychochick - “normal liberals have jobs, etc, etc” - absolutely true. But the people I’m talking about are the politicians, the Kos Kidz, and the radical freaks who turn up to protest every single thing that has anything to do with nuclear technology. All the people whose political careers depend on the scaremongering and the control over industry that would be needed to implement anti-global-wormening tactics. They’re the problem, and we need to get them out, NOW.

Not that alone; although that alone is more background and experience than you will ever possess. It is also more then enough to distinguish him from 99% of the pundit field. He also demonstrates some actual competence - not only in scientific knowledge but the capacity for scientific thought. It’s not something I’d expect you to be able to recognize or appreciate.

That said, I can’t say I always agree with his conclusions (especially on non-scientific matters) and I certainly can’t always excuse his behavior (whether real or contrived). Bear in mind that the comment related to scientific ability in a field whose default level is essentially none. In a nation of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

Admit it DJ, you just hate him because he had the bad manners to tell people that pot is bad for them. :em93:

I said he was a notable exception to a particular group of people in a specific regard.
