Thanks to LC The Boid, our blood pressure just flew through the roof again.

We already knew that the AMA were getting too nosy for their own good (and when we say “for their own good”, we mean it quite literally), but it’s getting to be worse than we thought, and that’s saying quite a bit. Here’s a hint for the nosy pediatricians out there: Mind your own fucking business, or ELSE, because if you really want to see an ugly side of me, this is one heck of a way of making sure that I’ll introduce you to it:

They’re watching you right now.

They counted every beer you drank during last night’s Red Sox game.

They see you sneaking out to the garage for a smoke.

They know if you’ve got a gun, and where you keep it.

They’re your kids, and they’re the National Security Agency of the Nanny State.

I found this out after my 13-year-old daughter’s annual checkup. Her pediatrician grilled her about alcohol and drug abuse.

Not my daughter’s boozing. Mine.

“The doctor wanted to know how much you and mom drink, and if I think it’s too much,” my daughter told us afterward, rolling her eyes in that exasperated 13-year-old way. “She asked if you two did drugs, or if there are drugs in the house.”

Help us out here, because we’re really not getting this. Since when did it become part of a pediatrician’s job description to, without encouragement, give their patients the third degree? Did the kindly Dr. Schnoopenstein use a bright light, restraints and thumbscrews as well? No, we’re not talking about a troubled kid wanting to talk here, that’s something else entirely, we’re talking about some third tier quack taking it upon herself to interrogate a little girl, “just in case.”

None of your fucking business, bitch, and you’d damn well better thank whatever deity it is that you do or don’t believe in that it wasn’t my girl, or you’d be shitting bits of teeth for weeks.

I turned to my wife. “You took her to the doctor. Why didn’t you say something?”

She couldn’t, she told me, because she knew nothing about it. All these questions were asked in private, without my wife’s knowledge or consent.

Here’s a hint for the c*nt quack in question along with any colleagues of hers practicing the same way: We don’t know how it works in whatever mosquito and yellow fever-infested third world cesspool that your diploma mill has its mailing address in, but in this country we have such terms as “minor” and “consent.” How would you feel if some perfect stranger accosted your kids while they were out and about, giving them the third degree about everything that goes on within your four walls? Shut up, bitch, we’re not done yet. No, you are NOT “special.” For all intents and purposes you ARE a perfect stranger with no rights to ask such questions whatsoever, the only difference being that you’re abusing your authority to get the poor kids to talk to you.

And that doesn’t make it any better, in case you’re wondering.

“The doctor wanted to know how we get along,” my daughter continued. Then she paused. “And if, well, Daddy, if you made me feel uncomfortable.”

So, just because she can, Dr. Quackenschwein decided to presume you guilty of alcoholism, drug abuse and molestation unless, of course, the kid’s testimony cleared you.

If we were to say that we’re “angry” right now, then that would be the biggest understatement of the century.

You think that’s bad? Oh wait, it gets worse:

We used to be proud parents. Now, thanks to the AAP, we’re “persons of interest.”

The paranoia over parents is so strong that the AAP encourages doctors to ignore “legal barriers and deference to parental involvement” and shake the children down for all the inside information they can get.

And that information doesn’t stay with the doctor, either.

Debbie is a mom from Uxbridge who was in the examination room when the pediatrician asked her 5-year-old, “Does Daddy own a gun?”

When the little girl said yes, the doctor began grilling her and her mom about the number and type of guns, how they are stored, etc.

If the incident had ended there, it would have merely been annoying.

But when a friend in law enforcement let Debbie know that her doctor had filed a report with the police about her family’s (entirely legal) gun ownership, she got mad.

She also got a new doctor.

We would have too, but in our case it wouldn’t “merely” be because we were pissed off. It would also be because the old doctor had “expired”, and we’re not talking about her credit cards here.

Don’t believe us, pediatricians?

Try us. Just be sure to have your earthly affairs in order before you do so. And don’t bother to book any vacations in advance prior to doing so. It’d be a sad waste of money, unless you make sure to book enough seats on the plane for a 7 foot pine box to fit in.

Yes. We are serious.

No doubt the Doctor’s excuse is that its required by law that everything be reported which gives them the gestapo police power to interrogate your kids without your knowledge or consent.

The problem with the laws as they are is they require only a suspicion, without qualification or definition. With that kind of power, there’s going to be a few who just can’t resist abusing it. Couple that with the greater incidence of leftism in the leadership of the American medical profession, and this is what we get.

Having been a youngster fairly recently, I’m guessing this is a rather new development.

The AAP has a long and contemptible history of this sort of garbage. The “physician” in question not only violated the ethics of his profession by disclosing this family’s lawful gun ownership to the police, he likely violated HIPAA and a raft of other privacy laws as well. He ought to lose his license and be prosecuted.

    Oh, but wait:

A professional organization pressuring its dues-paying, State-licensed and Federally-reimbursed membership to feloniously violate local, state and Federal law in order to further a clearly-stated political agenda.

Can someone tell me if that’s merely conspiracy or does RICO come into play?

Sorry, Mindy, but the mandated reporting laws (which Planned Parenthood tends to ignore, to the detriment of many young girls) don’t define or qualify the required suspicion. So, were I your “friendly” neighborhood lefty pediatrician, I could think, “that guy looks funny. I suspect he’s abusing his child,” and then subject your child to the third degree about your activities. All I have to do is document my suspicion (not it’s foundation) and any information gathered from the interrogation. Gotta love those vaguely written laws. But they mean well, dontchaknow.

    Mindy,
It’s a lot disturbing. A RICO prosecution of AAP might prove interesting. Wonder what the discovery phase would turn up. Sort of like when people threaten lawsuits against CAIR for some action or another and CAIR backs off as fast as it can.

I just wish I could find a copy of the letter that was suggested for patients who’s doctor started asking questions about firearms ownership.

If they say no, ask for a written statement from the hospital administration that dispensing advice in areas the caregiver is not trained in is hospital policy.

Not necessarily. Only about a third of practicing physicians belong to the AMA and membership has nothing to do with sitting on a Board.

However, that doesn’t mean they’ll listen, even to physicians. I filed a formal complaint about this remarkable individual two years ago (unrelated to the patients in the article) and got back the standard “we really don’t care and we’re not doing a damn thing about it” form letter from the Board.

    For the record…

When I see a child for a “well child visit”:

    1) A parent is always present in the room, especially during the physical exam,

    2) My inquiries about firearms are limited to questions of whether the child has had some form of safety training, similar to questions regarding water safety.

In the modern era, only a fool would interview or examine a child without a parent or chaperon in the room.

“Did he touch you down there?” “Yes.” “Was your mommy with you the whole time you saw the doctor?” “No.”

    (Wham. Allegation made, career over.)

As to safety, drownings are far more common than firearms accidents and even if you don’t have a swimming pool or guns, your neighbor might. The rational course is to offer you and your child safety education, which is what I do.

Violating patient confidentiality simply because a household contains legally-held firearms is at least a gross and contemptible violation of ethics and should be cause for dismissal from the profession.

    Misha
I didn’t even think you could BE a legal doctor if you were into homeopathic “medicine.” People used to go to Mexico to get their laetrile treatments. Is that legal in the US now?

What a terribly depressing history on laetrile, which gives off cyanide as it breaks down. “A cadre of John Birch Society members saw the repression of Laetrile as a sinister plot against their basic freedoms.”

    PC,

Nevada is one of several states that recognizes Homeopathic Medical Doctors (HMDs) as licensed physicians. Fortunately, the State Medical Association has fought long and hard to keep them from gaining full prescribing privileges.

Laetrile fell out of fashion some time ago. However, other crackpot things like “ozone therapy” are now in vogue.

(Ozone, as you know, is a source of free radical oxygen. The same people who promote it tend to be the ones who then prescribe “antioxidants.”)

… and the Birchers thought the AMA had a scam going…

Thanks. I don’t know very much about licensing rules.

However, that article did say he gave the patient injections of insulin and laetrile. That’s why I was obsessing about laetrile, which I thought had fallen out of favor, also.

    ozone/antioxidants–sigh

It’s not just the pediatricians that do this. Last time I took my mother to the doctor, she was grilled about my dad - did he have any guns, did he drink, was he abusive, did she feel safe around him, etc.

When the quack in question didn’t get the answers she wanted, she asked the same questions about me and my brother - while I was standing there in the room!

All of this seemed more important than the infection for which I had taken my mother to the doctor in the first place.

I know the letter you are referring to. It was available on the NRA ILA website about two years ago, but I can’t find it now.

I know I had the thing saved as a file several years ago, but there have been some rearrangements in the hardware department since. If it’s even still in the network here, I have no idea where it might be…

My friend’s mother is a homeopathic ‘doctor’. I had congestion problems for years, so she gives me these BB-sized ‘pills’ and tells me I can’t use toothpaste with mint in it. Jesus Christ, I lasted 2 weeks, went to a specialist, had a septoplasty (internal nose job to repair a deviated septum), and with one day in surgery, I was cured. Back to the mint toothpaste again, naturally. Homeopathy started off as a well-meaning afterthought to reckless overmedicating, and has become a cottage industry for med-school dropouts, holistic nutjobs and Gawd knows what else.

Back when I was in medical admin, releasing any private information without signed consent was an offense handled by civil and/or criminal sanctions. Times have changed and much for the worse.
I cannot but wonder how we are any better than the old Soviet Union. Far too remeniscnet of Pavlik Morozov, the Young Pioneer brat who snitched on his father for hiding grain (during the Ukrainian famine). After he was killed by his relatives, the Commies turned him into a Soviet saint - but the Russians at least subsequently repealed this travesty after 1990. We’re still encouraging and glorifying ours.

Maybe since that doctor is a quack, she-he-it should be boiled in orange sauce.

Get me on your jury and I guarantee you’ll skate for anything you might have done to that quack- even if caught in the act.

And you wonder why we don’t want to expand SCHIP? Why we don’t want the feral government providing us with complete health care? :em72: :em72: :em72:

Yep, you know what they say about the road to hell…these psychos cannot get it through their pointy little heads that we do not seek, do not want and do not need their help and wisdom….as little as either may be. Some soulless, desperate busybody seeking relevance in todays world…regardless of the cost to others, financial, emotional or spiritual. Now what political group does that remind me of? I’m damn careful about what doctors I see, much more than I used to be. For we males are little but uncivilized brutes, unless you need a tire changed.

“If you ask a beginning medical school class what is at the top of your list for a 75-year-old man with rectal bleeding and abdominal pain, it’s colon cancer,” said Horton’s daughter-in-law, Dr. Katherine Gundling, an internist who heads the allergy and immunology clinic at the University of California, San Francisco.

This is unvarnished bullshit. A first year medical student can’t find his or her ass (medically) with both hands, a road map, and a flash light. I know because I were one. The guy you mention is clearly a fuck-up, but the case is not helped by this crap. Otherwise, I remember seeing this guns-in-the-house shit from the AMA about 10 years ago. Made me so glad I had dropped out 10 years before that. Finally, check out the dick headed moron “whats up doc” in the comments section.

Yeah, I remember this crap, too. I want to say it was an article in Pediatrics where they elevated guns to the status of a serious public health issue. What utter nonsense! Not once have I ever witnessed an inanimate object willfully pose a health problem to a living soul. Given that absurd logic, and as stated previously, water should be considered a greater public health problem than guns because of drowning. How about the family car, lurking in garage, waiting for a chance to beat you upside the head with its’ own version of a public health issue. Far bigger problem than guns with well over 40,000 people murdered each year by the mere presence of automobiles on the public roadways.

Thankfully, my colleagues know better than to pull a stunt like that here in God’s Country. That bullshit would land them on the first bus out of town or their practice would dry up overnight.

Well, the “not American” argument is a hackneyed and intellectually weak one, but you’d be surprised how appealing it is to voters who don’t actually think.

Reminiscent of Orwell’s 1984, with the children of the Party’s Spies reporting on their parents. Exactly the same in fact! What scares me is, who gave these doctors the authority to ask about the parents drinking habits, their owning guns and the like?!? Who has put in place a system of Party Spies, and who benefits from the information so obtained, can anyone tell me?

I got a chill going up and down my spine at the thought of what the gathering of information is really for…
