Get over it. It’s what got me my “Master of Parody”

Well I’m a runnin’ down the road,
    Gotta lose a big load,
I’ve got last night tacos on my mind.

    Four big bean burritos,
    Two cheese smothered sanchos,
Oh, that hot sauce was so fine.

    Eatin’ greasy,
    Eatin’ greasy,
Don’t let those red hot habaneros make ya queasy.
Eat some Tums, while you still can,
You know you’ve got to understand!

Well I just ran through a stop sign in Winslow, Arizona,
And such a fine sight to see.

    There’s a big blue Porta-Potty.

    Come on ba-by,
    Don’t say may-be,
There’s gotta be enough toilet paper,

I remember with great fondness the Springfield 30.06 I trained with in boot. We were buddies, did lots of jumping jacks together, sixteen count manuals and became inseparable. A very pretty rifle. Then off to the A range, where an M1 Garand tried to bite my thumb off. Rather unfriendly, I felt. But boy did it throw a slug down range! I do have my eye on an M1A I spotted. But due to present financial obligations and limitations, not to mention uncertanties, I must wait. Besides, there is a certain Springfield pistol my wife fell in love with. I understand perfectly, and she did want me to have that Marlin lever action I bought. The gun laws can prove problematic as well. A fucking wrist rocket becomes an assault weapon. But lots of hunters around here. We have a great many duck hunters hereabouts, that and wild pigs, found in abundance. These organic rototillers prove a menace and can be extremely dangerous, as an acquantance discovered when one pig, shot, allegedly dead, came to life and straight at him, slashing his leg. Took four rounds from his .45 revolver to make Mr. Pig really dead. Stubborn sort, he was, all four hundred pounds of him. One of the nice things here is the lack of PC bullshit in our schools. Many teachers here duck hunt. Too many students do not want to hear some crap about how gun owners are nutcases or paranoids. They would be talking about their parents, usually not sitting too well. Personally I feel we have a far better, more realistic understanding than these ivory tower ideologues as to the true acceptance of basic human nature, based on historical perspective and personal experience. As for the cities, unfortunately a different story, for all too often, only the criminal element has guns. Insane, yes, real? Also yes. Another reason I won’t live in a city. I feel somehow vulnerable if I don’t have access to a gun. Perhaps from knowing, from personal experience, that some folks just aren’t nice.

What do you guys think of this?

Ex-Commander Says Iraq Effort Is ‘a Nightmare’

WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 — In a sweeping indictment of the four-year effort in Iraq, the former top commander of American forces there called the Bush administration’s handling of the war “incompetent” and said the result was “a nightmare with no end in sight.”

Lt. Gen. Ricardo S. Sanchez, who retired in 2006 after being replaced in Iraq after the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, blamed the Bush administration for a “catastrophically flawed, unrealistically optimistic war plan” and denounced the current addition of American forces as a “desperate” move that would not achieve long-term stability.

“After more than four years of fighting, America continues its desperate struggle in Iraq without any concerted effort to devise a strategy that will achieve victory in that war-torn country or in the greater conflict against extremism,” General Sanchez said at a gathering of military reporters and editors in Arlington, Va.

He is the most senior war commander of a string of retired officers who have harshly criticized the administration’s conduct of the war. While much of the previous condemnation has been focused on the role of former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, General Sanchez’s was an unusually broad attack on the overall course of the war.

But his own role as commander in Iraq during the Abu Ghraib scandal leaves him vulnerable to criticism that he is shifting the blame from himself to the administration that ultimately replaced him and declined to nominate him for a fourth star, forcing his retirement.

Though he was cleared of wrongdoing in the abuses after an inquiry by the Army’s inspector general, General Sanchez became a symbol — with civilian officials like L. Paul Bremer III, the head of the Coalition Provisional Authority — of ineffective American leadership early in the occupation.

General Sanchez said he was convinced that the American effort in Iraq was failing the day after he took command, in June 2003. Asked why he waited until nearly a year after his retirement to voice his concerns publicly, he responded that it was not the place of active-duty officers to challenge lawful orders from the civilian authorities.

OT… (Waitaminut, this is an open thread, there is no OT…)

Had a skunk in the sights of my .380 Mustang tonight, but didn’t take the shot. He was over at my mom’s place, eating the cat food she sets out for strays. (Soft hearted, but not so smart.)

I saw him on the way back out to my car, chomping away at the cat food. I crouched and crept to within 10 feet of him. I had him lined up, safety off and took the slack out of the trigger. I whistled a bit to try to get him to turn toward me so I wouldn’t get sprayed (as much) and he didn’t respond. I tried talking and even a short shout to get his attention. Nothing. I stood up and scuffed my feet and he just kept on eating. Finally I just walked over to him and he ignored me. Then I realized the ballsy little critter is basically tame.

Looks like Mom has a new pet.

(Don’t ask me to get him vaccinated, though.)

Moriarty, does your mother live on our Southern border? The critter’s modus operandi is EXACTLY like our Southern neighbors’ behavior…

    To wit:

They blatantly come to our house country, uninvited…

They blatantly eat up our food resources without paying… (Health care, housing, jobs, schools, etc.)

They blatantly ignore us when we tell them that they’re not welcome and, in fact, raise a big stink when we point out the fact that we’re not very happy with their presence and consumption of our resources and ask them to leave…

You’ve just opened one hell of a can of worms. (It’s sort of like asking, “What’s the best first car?”) You’re going to get more advice and opinion than you bargained for. Basically, the best intro handgun is the one you like and shoot the best.

My suggestion would be to consider a well made .22, either autoloader or revolver. Wander on over to the Imperial Firearms Advisor’s site and make your interest known. Odds are pretty good someone there can give you some instruction and opportunity to see what best suits you.

My first handgun, when I was 15, was a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag. I don’t recommend this for everyone, though.

    (Damn I miss that gun…)

    Psychochick

What’s a good intro handgun? I think someone said a revolver is better?

It all depends on what you want it for, hon. If you are looking for something to just develop your skills with, get a QUALITY .22 LR, revolver or autoloader. You can shoot it a lot for considerably less money that you would spend on any centerfire caliber.

If you are looking for a double duty handgun, (skills and defense), I generally recommend to my customers that they pick up a full size revolver in .357 Magnum, and run .38 Specials in it for most of their practice. Not nearly as cheap to shoot as a .22, but it’s the best compromise.

For double duty, if you feel you have to have an autoloader for a first gun, (I try to find out how much a person is going to shoot, and if they realize the costs involved in doing so), get a decent quality 9mm. .40S&W has an unpleasant recoil for a lot of people, most .380s have more recoil than the average 9×19, and it’s the cheapest of the autoloading calibers to feed. (Which a .45 (my preference), is definitely NOT!)

Which autoloader? Whichever will fit you best. Which is why I recommend to my customers that they try a LOT of rentals before they buy. I will never make a blanket recommendation of any particular brand, I think you might have heard me say that before, (I believe I brought it out in that long winded post you read of mine).

Always remember, if you can do it at all, try it (or something damned close to it!), before you buy it!

If you go looking for a good inexpensive folder, see if anyone in your area is selling “Byrd” knives. They are an inexpensive division of Spyderco. (Who make some damned fine knives!) I like knives.

The Close-Quarters Combat type. I like that personal, up-close kind of old-world one-on-one attention to detail that knife fighting entails.

Here are some of my collection of blackened, tanto-bladed combat folders.

Top one is a lefty Benchmade Stryker I’ve been carrying for almost a decade. The grip scales are made of G10, a ten layer laminate which withstands 25,000PSI. The liners, which also serve as the locking mechanism, are titanium alloy. Blades are made of D2 tool steel, which is probably the most durable thing this side of cannon barrel materials.

Underneath it is a New-Old-Stock model of the same that I ferreted out on the Intarwebs a couple of weeks ago, and had been sitting in some Benchmade collector’s knife drawer for nearly a decade. That one’s going to give it’s blade to the old one above. In return, it will receive a brand new straight edge tanto blade from the Benchmade factory’s repository of old CNC programs for knives they no longer make.

At bottom is a new Camillus Heat tanto with ‘Robo’ assist. It’s not a Benchmade, obviously, but it will do till I get the work done on the others. It will comfortably shave my face.

Nope, they’re not switchblades. The one at the bottom is called an ‘assisted opening’ knife, which admittedly skirt the law in this regard. Even the non-assisted ones open in 1/10th of a blink of an eye.

Most places allow carrying knives, with various caveats. Philly allows folding blades of less than 4″. A number of places allow non-Military, Rescue or LE to carry ’switchblades’ if they have a disabled arm.

Just to annoy certain ‘Progressive’ types, I don’t see why Mil/Rescue/LE should be better armed than civilians in this regard either. Criminals aren’t prevented from stabbing people by the absence of a tiny spring…

Now this is what i call a reason to move….

New Zealand women have the most sexual partners in the world, according to a global sex survey.

They have an average of 20.4 sexual partners, according to a survey by condom-maker Durex - well above the global average of 7.3.

The Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global survey, which questioned 26,000 people in 26 countries, found that Austrians topped the male list with 29.3 sexual partners, more than twice the global average of 13.2.

New Zealand was the only country where women were more promiscuous than their men, who averaged 16.8 sexual partners, The Press newspaper said, reporting the survey.

The survey showed that Austrians were the youngest to lose their virginity at an average of 17.3 years, followed by Brazilians (17.4), Germans (17.6) and New Zealanders (17.8

Damn right it is. I don’t need to be told what I can and can’t do as a reasonable person in order to defend myself, or even just to feel as though I will be able to, should I deem necessary.

Carrying a knife concealed in Philly- and, apparently a folder on a pocket clip is not ‘concealed‘- is illegal, as is carrying a fixed blade. So no Ka-Bars for us either, if it’s any consolation.

What’s a good intro handgun? I think someone said a revolver is better?

It all depends on the shooter of course PC. You have to try on handguns much like you do shoes. What you like now, you won’t like so much next year. You can grow out of them. Which is why you see so many of us here always talking about getting new guns. Well..the guys like to horde, but as for me I only buy what I want to carry and shoot at the range, so I just have my XD 9 right now with another on the wish list (with Exotic wood hand grips :em95: ).

As you can see I’ll be stepping up to a .45 (M, JB, Vulcan Rider and the Emperor have been twisting my arm to drop the .9mm). Once you get used to holding and shooting a certain caliber, chances are you will find yourself moving up to higher calibers in time. As your skills improve you’ll find your tastes in certain handguns change.

His Ford Crown Victoria disabled by hostile fire, driver Tom Maffin scrambled from the car, crouched behind the hood and sprayed a target with automatic gunfire to cover for a passenger.

    Maffin’s weapon: a KRISS Super V .45-caliber submachine gun.

If you’re military or law enforcement and haven’t heard of it, chances are you soon will.

Maffin is senior gunsmith for Transformational Defense Industries Inc., a weapons technology firm that conducts its research and development from a Virginia Beach office park near Lynnhaven Mall. Watch video of the KRISS Super V submachine gun.

By early next year, the Washington-based TDI plans to open a production facility in Virginia Beach to begin manufacturing the submachine gun for police and military use and a .45-caliber semi automatic carbine for the commercial shooting market.

Industry experts say the weapons are unlike any other now on the market and could shake up the firearms world.

What makes the weapons special, company and industry officials say, is a new patented operating system that substantially reduces recoil and muzzle climb when fired.

The recoil, or kick, of a conventional weapon is directed backward into a shooter’s shoulder, causing the gun to rise off target. TDI’s “Super V” bolt-and-slide mechanism directs the energy downward in front of the trigger.

Company tests indicate the mechanism reduces recoil by 40 to 60 percent and muzzle rise by about 95 percent over conventional gun operating systems.

At a Thursday demonstration for media at a Blackwater USA firing range in Moyock, officials said their system improves accuracy and reduces user fatigue. The submachine gun can be fired with one hand and remain on target.

“This is the future of weapons right here,” said Andrew Finn, TDI’s senior vice president.

TDI has worked with the Army and special operations forces to develop the technology. It uses Blackwater’s facilities to field test the weapons.

Officials set up the disabled vehicle scenario to demonstrate the maneuverability and firepower of the .45-caliber submachine gun, which TDI says is ideal for close-quarter situations the police and military encounter in urban settings.

The gun, which weighs about 5 pounds unloaded and collapses to a length of 16 inches, can be easily carried in helicopters, Humvees and other vehicles, said Maffin, a retired Marine who began working at TDI’s Virginia Beach operation about a year ago.

“Seeing this product for the first time in my interview, I was sold,” Maffin said. “It’s got the knockdown power a lot of guys want.”

Members of the media at the Thursday event, heavy in such trade publications as Guns & Ammo and Small Arms Review magazines, were allowed to shoot the submachine gun and the carbine.

“The reduction in recoil is absolutely amazing,” said Wendy Henry, who works in Pennsylvania for Women In Scope, a TV series that promotes women’s awareness of firearms. “It’s very easy to maintain your control over it.”

Frank Borelli, a law enforcement and military consultant in Maryland, said the weapon is “going to rock the firearms industry.” He has fired the TDI submachine gun but did not attend the event.

“What they’re doing is very different,” Borelli said.

Some industry experts question whether the company will make significant inroads with military and police, which have moved away from submachine guns - in part because their pistol-caliber rounds can’t pierce body armor. The gun’s price tag - now expected to retail in the $1,200-to-$1,300 range - also could chill sales.

Company officials said interest is high, noting that they worked with the Army’s Picatinny armament research and development arsenal in New Jersey to develop the technology.

These guns are the first product that TDI, a five-year-old subsidiary of Switzerland-based Gamma Research and Technologies Holding SA, has brought to market.

Chuck Kushell, TDI’s chief executive officer and director, said the Virginia Beach operation, dubbed Viking Works, will grow once production starts in January or February.

Currently, eight engineers, machinists and gunsmiths work in a 4,000-square-foot facility. Kushell said he expects to more than double the space and add 15 to 20 employees as the company ramps up over the next few months.

To reach the civilian market, the company developed the .45-caliber carbine. Plans call for marketing it primarily to shooting enthusiasts who would use it for competitions and target practice, but it also could be used for hunting.

“This is not going to be a gun for everyone,” Kushell said.

Company officials said the Super V mechanism can be adapted to any caliber weapon. Work currently is under way on a 12-gauge shotgun. And the company has won an Army contract valued at a little over $1 million to develop a lighter-weight, more user-friendly .50-caliber machine gun, Kushell said.

This reminds me of a joke:

A new post to the French Foreign Legion arrives in Morocco, and finds the conditions austere to say the least. The sergeant showing him around points out that the “mess hall” is his kit and the FFL equivalent of C-rations. The “barracks” are a line of tents. When the newbie (being a bit of a “knobber”) asks if there are any women, the sergeant replies, “Oh, we use the camel for that,” and points to a camel tied to a palm tree. The newbie is disgusted! Disgusted, I tell you!

Anyway, after a few months the new soldier is feeling a bit “anxious.” All of a sudden, after some highly illegal date palm wine, that camel starts to look pretty good. So he swallows his pride, leads the camel around a sand dune and commences to gettin’ friendly with it. This, as you might imagine, causes a helluva ruckus. The sergeant comes running, sees the cause of the commotion and screams out, “What are you doing!?!” The soldier replies, “I’m using the camel, like you said.” The sergeant replies, “We ride the camel into town for the whorehouse, dumbass!”

Thank you, thank you. There’s a midnight show…

    PC,

Sorry, late to the party as I was busy burying the In-Laws. As to your question as to the best handgun Moriarty is certainly correct. The best handgun for self defense is the one you are most proficient shooting. For home defense I would recommend a 20 gauge shotgun. It still requires skill to fire but is very lethal in the right hands.

As for a handgun I have many but prefer my .45 caliber Springfield Armory Ultra Compact but I also keep a .9 MM next to it for back-up. That or my .38 Detective Special. My rule of thumb is that if a weapon is in the house I and the other inhabitants should be proficient in using all of them regardless of caliber.

My wifes preferred weapon is her stainless steel Colt .45 (1911 model) semiautomatic pistol. Although we believe in diversity, we have/keep close to our reach a 1 ¼ in dowel, an aluminum baseball bat, a survival knife, several caliber weapons, and a picture of Hillary.

Well, maybe not the last one…

Seriously, one .22 caliber round to the face is far more effective than 7 rounds of .45 caliber into the hallway wall. Use what you can shoot the best.

40k? that’s amazing…yeah, the money is going to some foundation that helps support families of Marines that die in the line of duty. I wonder if hairless reid donates to anything like that.

Do you think that the dnc has any pre-approved bidders who might like to get their hands on that letter???

Azygos my prayers are with you in this time of loss….God bless you and your family.

I’m not going back to the PFW post, that nobody posted on anyway, so I’m gonna shout out here.

    LSU lost.

ASU won big over Washington. An (previously)unranked team is breathing down your backs for the Championship you thought should have been bestowed on you.

When USC lost, you thought it was wrapped up, but you go and lose to UK.

We’re still working on an undefeated season.

so the cop said you know what YOU use the left side, YOU use the middle, YOU use the right side then hang it up and the other 3 can shower when it is dry

You’re saying that they actually shower?

By the way, what were you doing in jail?

    Crunchie,

My apologies to you sir about misunderstanding your comment.

And thanks all for the kind words. Contrary to what you all might think this was a happy event for our family. For more of the story go Fort Rosecrans National Memorial Cemetery

That was a very nice story. And Rosecrans is an amazingly beautiful place. Very appropriate setting for our fallen heroes final resting place.
