In their ever-expanding mission to take authority away from parents entirely and make every child a ward of the state, “progressives” in Maine are now insisting that sexually promiscuous 11-year-olds shouldn’t have to let their parents know that they’re on the pill (link thanks to Sir Christopher):

Students who have parental permission to be treated at King Middle School’s health center would be able to get birth control prescriptions under a proposal that the Portland School Committee will consider Wednesday.

The proposal would build on the King Student Health Center’s practice of providing condoms as part of its reproductive health program since it opened in 2000, said Lisa Belanger, a nurse practitioner who oversees the city’s student health centers.

If the committee approves the King proposal, it would be the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to some students in grades 6 to 8, said Nancy Birkhimer, director of teen health programs for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. Most middle schoolers are ages 11-13.

And why not? They’re already in favor of the students banging like rabbits without the parents’ knowledge, they’re all in favor of them having abortions on the sly, so why not put them all on the pill as well? Hey, why not just take the kids away from the puritan influence of the parents altogether, leaving them at the mercy of “professional edumacators?”

It’s not like they’re your kids, after all. You just put them into the world to provide the State with new serfs, so shut up already and pay your taxes, will ya?

Another fine example of “educators” and “social knowitalls” handiwork! Since they’re so convinced they know better than the rest of us, this is only “normal” to these hippies wannabes! These morons will NEVER say NO to the little darlings, regardless of what it is said darlings want. And why wait for the young ones to request anything when these same “educators” can just push whatever they think the kids want?!? Somebody tell me, who, but just WHO is in fucking charge of these schools? Parents, here’s an idea, band together and demand that these “socialist educators” be fired ON THE SPOT. And KEEP at it. Raise such a stink that they will never, ever try this nonsense again. Publish the names of those so anxious to have such programs approved in the local, heck, the state papers.

Who, on this side of stupid, has these imbecilistic ideas if not socialist knowitall!?!?

    Pharmacist here -

Birth control meds are becoming the only class of drugs with their own set of constitutional rights. The irony of all this is that kids will probably still need an act of Congress to get a f###ing band-aid.

I’m all for fewer restrictions regarding the medications that Americans of legal age can buy without prescription - for instance, Canada has the right idea with that splendid hangover cure, aspirin/codeine tablets. But, these aren’t adults we’re talking about here.

Also, this is one instance where I hope the ambulance-chasers and insurance companies land on this school board like flies on shit. Birth control pills can cause strokes, pulmonary emboli, and other blood-clot-related problems. They can be abused by teenage bodybuilders (due to the anabolic properties of progesterone). The liability potential here is enormous; I just hope some kid doesn’t have to get sick or die to drive the point home.

But, you want to know what really pisses me off about this? It’s the idea that sexual ethics are the same for 13-year-olds as they are for adults. They’re not. Age equals rank, and rank hath its priveleges.

Or, more succinctly: Me grown-up, you kid. So shut the f### up and go to class. :em41:

Sorry to bang on (pun intended).

Not sure the metamorphosis was noted in this case.

Recall that previously, the libtards claimed that the reason they had to give out condoms instead of teaching abstinence was because of spread of disease and that the kids were just “going to do it anyway.”

Now, the typical libtard rule of “sanitize, then assimilate” has completed it’s course. Now that the public is clearly desensitized to condoms in skools, they can actually come out and say what they really want…kids fucking all over the place.

And why? Do you think an 11 yr old who can’t remember to do her homework will remember to take her damned pill every night? Nope. Then Billy knocks up little Brenda, and then? Ahh, you get to send little Brenda down to “neutralize the unwanted cells.”

Only in Liberatopia. What a bunch of dumbasses they’re breeding up in Maine.

Yep, here in Canadastan, you can get Tylenol with Codeine, which I was hooked on for a while. I would melt them down in hot water, filter them thru a coffee filter, and drink the pure codeine. Nice buzz, but certainly dangerous in the long run. Does work well when you need more than just a couple of pills to fix whatever ails you. Americans stock up on them here to bring them down. It’s way too easy to get the codeine out of the pills, and opiate addicts can easily dose up without risking getting caught buying from dealers.

Regarding the birth control thing - in order to safely prescribe birth control to anyone, don’t they have to have full access to their medical history? I know a woman who is allergic to most types of birth control, and almost died of heart attack before being diagnosed. In such a litigious society, how could anyone give such a non-essential drug to a child? Condoms are enough, unless the teens are really damned stupid - and there is just no cure for that.
I don’t consider myself a prude, but sex at that age is way too young - am I wrong? Plus, we have teens acting like they’re the Whore of Babylon, then complaining about the consequences? No socialist plan is going to rid children of these risks, it’s something we’re going to have to deal with.

Sounds familiar - my youngins do the same crapola to me. It’s called “stump the old man”. :em95:

When I read your post, I was thinking, “Is it possible to be Jewish and Catholic at the same time?” Obviously there’s a lot I don’t know about schools of thought regarding contraception within Judaism. Hopefully your Dad was able to work in a hospital where there aren’t any issues like that. I worked in hospitals most of my pharmacy-practice career; I work in medical research now. I don’t think I ever sold a condom, not once; the clerks did all that. I’m Lutheran, FWIW, although my religious beliefs have bounced round all over since high school.

One of my colleagues back in Kansas was Catholic, and got canned by a chain-store pharmacy because he wouldn’t dispense birth control. He set up his own store, and every Catholic within a 50-mile radius got their prescriptions filled there. Last I checked, the guy owns a piece of a country club and two airplanes. Living well is the best revenge.

Or, to look at it another way, since the end of prohibition, drunks can get their fix (as I once liked to do) without resorting to Al Capone. As T. Jefferson put it, “I would rather deal with the problems attending too much liberty than with the problems attending too little.” I have a feeling we’re gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. Part of my training, I guess; in my considered opinion, booze = cannabis = caffeine = tobacco = opium = a drug is a drug is a drug. Overidulgence in anything is harmful.

Regarding the birth control thing - in order to safely prescribe birth control to anyone, don’t they have to have full access to their medical history? I know a woman who is allergic to most types of birth control, and almost died of heart attack before being diagnosed….

Yes, it’s true, and yes, you’re absolutely right. If you can’t deal with the consequences, don’t take the risk, and 13-y/o is way the hell too young to know whether you can deal with that or not. The right of free individuals to make these decisions does not confer the right of the state to make them for minors.

I oppose government usurpation of parental authority for the same reason that I oppose prohibition, or any other form of statism.

Pfft. Don’t question the teacher you silly children, now pop your baby-b-gones and get back to work on reading Mr. Marx’s book.

Seriously though, it seems as though the last thing schools deem their business to be is to TEACH. Because while they insist on controlling the childrens’ sexual, dietary, and social habits, if they ask a question that exceeds the bounds of their textbooks, they get the most helpful answer in the world; “You’re not ready to learn that yet.”

Thanks alot. If things continue the way they are my kids will be home-schooled.

    WTF is going on here???

Good question. When our daughter was in middle school, a teacher found out she had Excedrin Migraine medicine in her backpack, and she got threatened with detention. She gets migraines, and if she takes one of these as soon as she feels one coming on, she can usually avert it; however, when she was in middle school, students were not allowed to self medicate at school, even with over-the-counter drugs. They were required to be evaluated and treated by the school nurse, who was only there part time during the week! Obviously, this wasn’t a good system for our migraine sufferer, so we told her to keep the headache medicine in her backpack and not to tell anyone. Unfortunately, she had a loud mouthed friend who found it and waved it around, and we were contacted and reprimanded by the school. And now you’re telling me these same kinds of idiots think it is ok to dispense prescription meds without parental permission? I don’t think so!

However, if the government wants my kids, they are welcome to borrow the little one for a week. I’m sure they’ll be anxious to give him back as soon as they realize their mistake.

    Another couple of points:

Sexually active female = mandatory yearly pap/pelvic and (under current guidelines) Gardasil immunization against Human Papilloma Virus.

If our hero nurse practitioner is willing to provide oral contraceptives to children, she must follow through on comprehensive care (routine pelvics/paps, Ob/gyn referral for abnormal results, appropriate immunization, pregnancy testing, contraceptive counciling including risks and alternatives — all with medicolegally sound informed consent to treat a child without parental advice or knowledge)…

I don’t want to be her malpractice carrier.

Our pharmacist makes a great point. Pulmonary emboli can kill and even if they don’t, you spend a long time in the hospital and then you’re on coumadin, AKA rat poison, for a year along with blood tests to establish therapeutic levels of anti-coagulation and with potential bleeding problems of major magnitude. All very spendy stuff. Who’s gonna pay for that? Answ: Initially at least, the kid’s parents who weren’t even asked. Silly little bint, that NP.

Speaking as someone who was born and raised in Maine, I’d like to point out a few things.

    1. There is a -huge- power disparity between southern maine ( which is roughly 30-50% imported liberals ) and northern maine ( 90% conservative natives. ) At a rough guess, I’d say that 20% of the population makes the laws up here, and 50% of that is imported liberals.

    2. ‘Native’ Maine is quietly, but -firmly- cristian. Those who come from away can attempt to impose thier standards all they want. We’ll fight.
If passed, it wont be implemented, if implemented, it wont be funded, if funded, they’ll question the implementation. Paperwork will be lost, meetings will be missed, instructions will be ‘misunderstood’.

Thanks. As a native mainer, this kind of crap just embarrasses the hell out of me. I’m on the budget committee for my town, and I’ve been making phone calls. So far I have one state representative’s ear on my wall, 2 school board members, 3 DHS workers, and a nasty letter to my congress critter, -hand delivered-.

That’s the way! It is my sincere hope that you will receive a lot of support from rightfully angered parents! And please, get the morons who came up with this piece of socialist brilliance fired!

    I’ve got an update.

It looks like a confluence of factors.
and, I was mistaken on a few points.

    1. No contraceptive chemicals or devices requiring a prescription will be issued to -any- student without parental consent. This was in the origional draft, and remands in the current draft.

    2. According to the numbers ( http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/2006/09/12/USTPstats.pdf ) Our teen pregnancy rates are some of the best in the nation ( we rank #46 which means 45 states have -more- teen pregnacies than we do ).

What concerns me about all this that we’re already doing really well on this issue, and yet we need to launch this very controversial plan? We’re already well into deminishing returns, why something like this?
Something doesnt add up. I’ll be doing more digging.

Late to the party, but I gotta add my 2 cents–

1– Birth control CAN cause complications even in properly screened adults– I went on it at the age of 30 to correct a hormone imbalance, and it drove my blood pressure up to unsafe levels. Didn’t come back down when I went off the Pill, either.

2– Mrs. DuToit has a great point on this– 11 yrs old is below the age of consent in every state. If an 11-yr-old needs BC, there is a PROBLEM. An extremely prosecutable problem. Parental consent doesn’t even figure into it– a parent who consented to their 11 yr old having sex is an accessory to statutory rape–end of story. (And if there is some medical problem that requires chemical correction, it needs to be given by the child’s primary care provider, not by the school nurse.)

Later to the party than Erin, but in case you missed the update, the school board approved it. Erin, you might want to write them a letter explaining that whole statutory rape thing! These people really have their heads up their asses.
