As is the case twice a year, EVERY year, those of us who run something that depends on the usage of correct time are screwed because of the Congressional Clownshoes and their Moronic Feelgood Measures™, more specifically the Daylight Savings Time that they keep moving around every time they feel the need to prove to the even bigger imbeciles that vote for them that they’re actually doing something.

So if the post times for your comments seem strange, that’s why. You see, thanks to the overpaid, underworked, corrupt, graft-sucking parasites in DC, yours truly has to fix the code every time we move from CST to CDT and vice-versa and no, I don’t get a check from the Parasitic Pissants on the Potomac™ to stay up until 3 am to do so.

Anyway, the time is correct now (well, not exactly, since Wordpress’ version of UTC is about 6 or 7 minutes ahead of the UTC that the rest of the world uses, but close enough), just don’t get confused if a comment you post now appears to have been posted before something you posted earlier.

We know. Time traveling sucks. You should see the things it does to the grammar of Imperial Galactic Standard, but that’s a subject for another day. Or year. Or decade.

Thatisall.

Time is a natural force that cares nothing for human endeavor.

On the other hand, I was happy to sleep in an extra hour this morning.

DST is just a completely retarded idea to begin with, and further evidence that if you want something to be completely fucked up, devoid of logic, and utterly subretarded, let the gooberment do it.

This Downing professor has way too much time on his hands!!! Who gives a crap about golf retail sales and BBQs?!?!

As far as “saving” time, just put the saved minutes in the jar on top of the fridge please… The extra hour of sleep is nice though…

Reminds me of an anecdote I heard while still in our Air Force. An SR-71 pilot took off from a base in Pakistan (I thought thats where it was) flew his mission and landed somewhere in Florida two hours before the flight even began… Fast flight through time zones will do this… Try explain THAT to a 9 year old inquisitive Grand-Daughter!!!

One of the nice things about Arizona - no DST. We have more than enough sunlight, no need to save it.

Makes me nostalgic for the days of the Concorde. I never got a chance to fly on one, which I always wanted, in spite of it being fwench, *spit*.

Arriving from a transatlantic flight *before* you left always seemed like a fun thing to so ;)

Another sight to behold is to watch the same sunrise twice… Our squadron flew east on a high speed navigation exercise, turned back west for 40 minutes back into darkness, in-flight refuelled, turned back east again, just in time to see the same sunrise we had just seen less than an hour before. Makes one more appreciative of the beauty of things…

Ah, Concorde, a beautiful bird Sire! At the time of its inception, we still flew the last of our CF-5s, and the joke was, if our fighters were to be able to intercept Concorde, they’d have to be strapped to the wings… Concorde= 1450 mph, CF-5= 900 mph… Maybe with a week’s notice…

Thanks for the links! Indeed a remarkable aircraft.
I only saw one in the distance once, during an exercise in our far north back in the stone age, at an altitude estimated to be above 75000ft on a south-easterly track and at a speed of Mach 2.8 that would put it almost over our heads… NORAD control simply asked us to be aware of “traffic” on that track, and for a fleeting moment, the Blackbird was seen (albeit at a distance) in all of its glory! We were at 45000 ft, northerly heading, doing 600 KIAS and still had to look up and up to catch a glimpse. And yes, we were downright envious!

    Those were the days! :em69:

Hardclimber54, I can only say what I feel regardng our military aircraft, the men that flew them, the men that jumped out of them. When I was a squid I used to tease an airborne friend of mine, saying only a crazy man would jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Then I bought him all the beer he could drink, he knew how I felt about airborne…..admiration and respect. Another was a B-52 ground crew chief, the stories he shared.
The men that flew those machines, into enemy fire and fighters. Until the advent of the P-51 they had only their guns…..sorry, I’m drifting back…
I’m thinking back to my dad, a navigator/intelligence officer on a B-17. He was shot down, escaped captivity twice, the second time staying gone. They broke his feet the first time, trying to cure him of any wanderlust. It didn’t work….
But I used to wonder what it was like, the smell of hot hydraulic oil and cold sweat….he spoke of it often. And how his aircraft fought for her life, two engines gone, one blown off the aircraft. The crew bailed out, enemy soldiers waiting for them.
But what did he see and hear…the following link gave me an idea, and I felt the my hair stand up hearing those engines spool up on takeoff, getting their bite, hitting their stride. And maybe a tear in my eye too…… So while I marvel at our mach 3 cruise machines, I feel awe at what our fathers did so many years ago, giving us what we have now. I salute you, Sir, my dad expressed enormous respect for our Canadian allies….

You are too kind Sir, my privilege, but thank you.

I also had an uncle who flew during WWII, Lancaster bombers as a tail gunner. On his fourth mission over Germany, got nailed by AA and bailed out. Captured, he spent the rest of the war in a POW camp until freed by Russian forces 1945. He would NOT talk about his experiences though… But when he learned I was accepted in our Air Force, he was beaming with pride! Again and again, like you, I tried to imagine what it was like to take off at dusk for yet another rendez-vous in hell,German flak, night fighters, dangers of collision, mechanical breakdowns, the cold, the noise. They were the men who gave us victory when the world had giving up hope in so many places.

The clip about the restored B-17 was very nice. Quite the machine! They don’t make them like that anymore…
