I put kind of a twist on today’s music pick — comparing the same song done by two different people twenty years apart.

Which one was better — and why?

David’s because he wrote it, and therefore would otherwise not be available to Kurt.

But at the same time, Kurt’s choosing it earns points and places it a micron from David’s, as executed.

David’s benefits from studio wizardry and Kurt’s stands alone nearly acoustic, but for the distortion. But covering a tune acoustically has the advantage of knowing the original, and arranging the tune thusly.

Some people think the Dixie Sluts wrote Landslide

Some people think Van Halen wrote You Really Got Me

Hands down it’s Bowie., and it’s mainly because I’m biased.

Besides, David is still doing his thing and living a good life while Kurt is feeding worms and headless.

Also David got Iman while Kurt got Courtney the cukoo, (no wonder Kurt topped himself).

Comparing those was great Deej, I might be a tad younger than most here but personally I enjoyed Kurt’s version better just because there wasn’t any “studio magic” just an excellent live performance.
Probably the only good thing ever to come out of Seattle was Grunge music.

I like Kurt Cobain, too bad he didn’t like himself…..The unplugged concert Nirvana did on MTV was a great performance.

but it’s BOWIE man!!, he wins hands down, he’s the man who put out one of the best rock albums of all times…..Station to Station.

That’s a shame because Stevie Nicks (the original version) sang it so much better.

Right down memory lane, Dave. Brings to mind another song from the memory banks. As tears go by, the first time I heard it was Maryanne Faithful in the early sixties, and later by the stones. I like hers better though. Hell, I remember when the Beatles first came to New York….

    Tough one, Dave.

I personally never was a fan of “unplugged” versions, so that probably colors my judgment a bit. I mean, this whole “let’s take a great song, sit around in a circle and make it sound like me and a couple of drunk buddies decided to jam in my garage on my son’s toy instruments before we called it a night” concept just doesn’t appeal to me. Let’s hear the song the way it was meant to be, shall we? If it was supposed to be recorded on a barstool in the kitchen, then it would’ve been released that way.

On the other hand, I can’t possibly NOT acknowledge Kurt’s skill in pulling it off without the help of a studio and state of the art equipment (and multiple takes). Terrible loss that Kurt offed himself, because he was one Hell of a musician.

“Unplugged” just doesn’t make for good listening, so I’d have to go with David’s version.

Cobain has talent but his execution of same seemed a bit stilted (agree with Sir Christopher above, about the bass player). It would be nice to be able to understand Cobain’s mumbling (took a couple of tries to get it) Though that may have as much to do with production as with anything else.

Bowie wins. *notes, he seemed much stronger as an overall talent/musician … your mileage may very*

I haven’t liked too many “updated” songs and agree with the comments that Bowie/Kinks versions were better.

You can toss Pretty Woman in there too. Nobody beats Roy.

Nice diversion DeeJ and a surprisingly fine effort on the part of Cobain et al. The Bowie version presented, I’m pretty sure isn’t the original–it sounds like a remix/remaster of some kind. The pic accompanying certainly isn’t the album cover I remember, which was kinda acid-cartoony. The original, as I remember it, didn’t have all that phasing nonsense at the beginning and was “muddier” in general, true to late 60’s early 70’s stereo vinyl quality; thus, it was much closer in tone to the Cobain/Nirvana version, but no question the Bowie version is much better on several levels, especially musicianship. Cobain did angst and feeling well–Bowie did angst, madness, feeling and technical musical and vocal prowess very well. Even his fluff duet, Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy, with Bing Crosby is freakin’ amazing.

AyUaxe, yes the duet with Crosby was something else. Taken on a number of levels. It was never ment to be released as a single (or otherwise) This was done after Bing died. (and was taken from a Crosby Christmas special) It was done in one take…and Crosby had no real idea who David Bowie was. True professionals and musicians (your voice is an instrument too). Don’t know as if the current generation of pop singers could ever do the same.

There was a Hendrix tribute album released about a decade ago, it was called Stone Free. Now, I’m a die hard Hendrix fan….and don’t like anyone messing with his legacy, but there were some pretty damned good tributes done on this thing…Most notably, the Spin Doctors doing Spanish Castle Magic, Pat Metheny doing Third Stone from the Sun, and Living Colour doing an asskicking version of Crosstown Traffic. I’m not a big fan of tribute albums but this one was a real standout……

But here it is, Wednesday evening, and I have posted two more for you to pick from.

    A side note though:

I am not convinced that Kurt Cobain shot himself. I have known a few heroin addicts who have killed themselves, and not one of them did so by shooting themselves. They tend to kill themselves by massive overdose. (those who didn’t intend to kill themselves simply overdosed with an amount that wasn’t necessarily massive)

The thing about heroin addicts is that they tend to give themselves just enough dope to NOT kill themselves, but always come right up to that invisible boundary where just a tiny bit more would OD them. They know that if they really needed to go over that limit, it wouldn’t take much.

No, seriously, some songs were meant to be played acoustically, these are the exceptions to my not-so-hard and fast rule. Another perfect example would be “Blackbird.” Of course, that one is an acoustic song that just happened to be recorded in a studio.

I don’t have a problem with all unplugged versions (”problem” meaning “why the Hell do it in the first place?”), just the vast majority of them. What’s next? Somebody doing “Barracuda” unplugged? Don’t tell me it’s been done, I may have to go kill somebody.
