Some of you may remember the Troll Caps that Management could put in a comment to quickly identify those people who came here to disrupt things.  Those comments were easily identified by the following symbol:

The problem was that it was Management who had to manually do it, and eventually it just got forgotten.

Well, now the fun is back.

Most of you know we’ve had a recent visitor coming here sounding more like a cartoon plant than a true believer.  But nevertheless, a little like the person who steps into the room to fart, then leaves the smell behind for everyone to choke on.

I am not a fan of redacting — it takes a lot of the fun away.  But I think that everyone should have a say as to who is leaving behind those smelly comments.

So now you have a chance to VOTE whether a person is a “Troll”.  Right now, five negative votes will award that person a “Troll-Cap”.  I may adjust it later depending on how many “false trolls” we wind up with.

You will notice the two choices:   for Troll and  for a good comment.

The more people voting for the good comment will make it harder for someone to vote for the Troll.  Hopefully it will keep someone from maliciously marking someone just because they can.    But like I said, I can increase the threshold in case that is happening.

Okay, go forth and have fun!

I was suspicious because I know who Kay is, and this would be the last place you’d ever find her. In fact, the last place would be a couple of stops before this one.

She’s like most bloggers out there: they want to have their site with their regular readers, and not go and bother someone else’s site with their regular readers. She might disagree with you 100 percent, but would stick up for your right to say it on your site without someone coming over to disrupt things.

Here’s an Troll icon idea I had and whipped up for ya, DJ:

It is art inspired by d-Kay, or CBS Bill, or whoever the hell has been blessing the Empire with his/her/its’ unique brand of horseshit. It’s a tad bigger than the troll cap icon, but I think a bit more entertaining and quite likely to be a very close approximation to the likeness of our favorite under-bridge dwellers. Use as you see fit.

And boring as well, Dave. Figured you’d find it sooner or later, probably sooner. The style does ring a bell, just can’t put a name on it yet. I’ve been here two years now and this is familar somehow. With rare exceptions the quality of our trools has declined. And the good ones seem to eventually self destruct or eat their own feet through their behaviors and language.

I wanted to see what it was that squirrel said to GET redacted!

It wasn’t so much any specific thing “she” said as much as it was a long C&P screed, and off-topic besides. That, more than anything else, was what got it chopped.

(Mind you, I’ve only chopped one comment of “hers”. Other than that, I’ve been busy moving all week, don’t have my primary box up yet, and am reduced to working on my company IBM StinkPad - a POS that won’t play very nice with my Sprint wireless mobile - *@@&$%!*& USB bugcode driver stop errors…

Have you been over to Sen. Susan Collins’ blogger’s site yet? Lance Dutson bans everyone who asks Collins’ her stance on the Iraq war. He deletes comments. A thought for the beginning of the holiday season. Opening my e-mail this morning, a friend had sent me this….
    ——————————————————————————–
    >
    > A Different Christmas Poem
    >
    >
    > The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
    > I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
    > My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
    > My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.
    >
    >
    > Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
    > Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
    > The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
    > Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.
    >
    > My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
    > Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
    > In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
    > So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.
    >
    > The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near,
    > But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
    > Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the
    > sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
    >
    > My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
    > And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
    > Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
    > A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.
    >
    > A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
    > Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
    > Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
    > Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.
    >
    > ‘What are you doing?’ I asked without fear,
    > ‘Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here!
    > Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
    > You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!’
    >
    > For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
    > Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
    > To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light
    > Then he sighed and he said ‘Its really all right,
    > I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.’
    >
    > ‘It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line,
    > That separates you from the darkest of times.
    > No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
    > I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me.
    > My Gramps died at ‘ Pearl on a day in December,’
    > Then he sighed, ‘That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always
    > remembers.’
    >
    > My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ‘ Nam ‘,
    > And now it is my turn and so, here I am.
    > I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while,
    > But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her
    > smile.
    >
    > Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
    > The red, white, and blue… an American flag.
    > I can live through the cold and the being alone,
    > Away from my family, my house and my home.
    >
    > I can stand at my post through the rain and the
    > sleet,
    > I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
    > I can carry the weight of killing another,
    > Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
    >
    > Who stand at the front against any and all,
    > To ensure for all time that this flag will not
    > fall.’
    > ‘So go back inside,’ he said, ‘harbor no fright,
    > Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.’
    >
    > ‘But isn’t there something I can do, at the least,
    > ‘Give you money,’ I asked, ‘or prepare you a feast?
    > It seems all too little for all that you’ve done,
    > For being away from your wife and your son.’
    >
    > Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
    > ‘Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
    > To fight for our rights back at home while we’re
    > gone,
    > To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
    >
    > For when we come home, either standing or dead,
    > To know you remember we fought and we bled.
    > Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
    > That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.’

I do not know if this man wrote it…but his name was after it. But as I told my friends I mailed the poem to. Nobody and nothing is more lonely than a soldier away from home and loved ones during the holidays. Why it is so very important to make sure they have good, hot chow, a card, a sense of appreciation from those back home. To feel or be forsaken would be a travesty of justice, and in my mind, unforgivable.

    LC HJ Caveman82952

    Thanks, much appreciated.

Agreed, nothing like receiving a package or just a card that reminds one that you’re not forgotten. I’ve spent most of my career either going to, or coming back, from somewhere. Wasn’t there when my boys spoke their first words, took their first steps. When I came back from my U.N. deployment, my son, then one years old, took nearly five days to stop being afraid of me. I left six months prior, and to him, was just a stranger. It does something to one’s heart. I was in some far away exercise when I learned my oldest son had spoken his first word (Mom) and when my second son took his first steps, I was deployed out west for 12 weeks. When I think of the many Xmas, thanksgiving, New Year, anniversary and birthdays missed because of my service, I feel somewhat sad at times. When people tell me how “lucky” I am in receiving a 25 years Canadian Forces pension, I remind them of the above. I paid for it, and then some…

    Happy Thanksgiving my friend…

Thanks for the reminder that not all sacrifices made in service of your country are of flesh and blood. I missed many of the same milestones you did, but in retrospect it was worth it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and to all the LC’s.

It wasn’t so much any specific thing “she” said as much as it was a long C&P screed, and off-topic besides. That, more than anything else, was what got it chopped.

    Could I make a suggestion/proposal here?

I agree that some of these troll comments can get way out of hand and disrupt the flow of any particular thread. Even so, they can be great reading or used for future reference.

I have created a page called “Troll Droppings” that you can see in the tab at the top of the page right now. Instead of going in and editing out the offending comments, why not just MOVE the entire comment to the Troll Droppings page?

I just installed a plug that will allow you to do that quite easily. Go to the admin area under Comments/Move. Find the post in the pull down menu, and then look for the offending post and select it. Then go to the bottom of the page and choose “Troll Droppings” as the place you want to move it to and then Update.

This way you can preserve all of the batty-ness and insanity to go back and look at.

(of course the plugin could also be used for moving someone’s comment to the thread they intended to post in as well)

From the beginning I didn’t think you were just cruising through and spouting idiotarian crap. You stuck it out and argued your point without using talking points, just stating your perspective and asking questions. You weathered some serious (and often undeserved) fire and stuck it out.

If you hung the LC tag on your name I would be proud to say you’re a member of the Empire. To have someone in here that has a slightly different lean keeps us healthy. An echo chamber is only amusing for a while, debate takes two views.
