Does “Labour Party” in Australia mean the same thing as “Labour Party” in England, which is a f.cking socialist party bend on destroying the very society that elected them???

Here, we have the NDP, (known in the 50’s as the Canada Communist Party need I say more…) which promises to put Canada on the road of equalitarian misery (my good fellow canuck ACPLoo might want to differ), but I disgress…

Look at what years of Labour Party has done to England, and yes, be afraid, be very afraid.

The Australian people have chosen. “Be very careful what you wish for, you just might get it”…

And first! (I mean, foist, I’ll get it right eventually…).

I wouldn’t worry about it. Sit back and watch an entire nation commit seppuku. If these morons actually go through with their platform Australia will be economically dead in a year. I would suspect that the PC crowd, (Whom Thomas Kratman refers to as “Kosmos”) will have everyone bowing 5 times towards Mecca in short order. Then we can point to them and say “This is why you should not vote Democrat.” :em01:

I am now looking into emigration. I’d prefer an open carry or good gun law state( can people who are applying for citizenship own guns?)

C’mon LC it will be amusing to see Kev get rolled by his own party within a year. I predict “retirement for health reasons”.
Sorry to say but the effects of the freaky left infesting our education system just paid off in spades for the ALP. Sorry to our allies but i think our contribution to the GWOY is about to take a kick in the nuts as well.
Theres been 11 years of strenghening Australia, paying debt, and producing one of the best places on earth to live. The silly buggers who voted for KRudd dont remember, or are to young to know about the 18% intrest rates last time the ALP was in power.
Its depressing, but the conduct of the media in the campaign was excerable. The cat was let out of the bag a bit when the presenter for the ABC (government funded channel) said words to the effect of “Its a win for the ABC” (instead of ALP) and couldnt stop vibrating in his chair and gurning like a loon.

If you’ve seen the movie The Dogs Of War, you just made me think of when Christopher Walken’s character gets to Zangaro’s Bureau of Customs. (For those who haven’t: The Customs officer gives him an evil stare upon finding two bottles of Irish whiskey in Walken’s luggage. Walken says, “I thought there might be a problem with the water.” The Customs guy replies, “There is,” and keeps one of the bottles.)

Golly, Venezuela seems to be seeing the danger that Australian voters failed to see:

Poll says Chavez loses Venezuela referendum lead

Forty-nine percent of likely voters oppose Chavez’s proposed raft of constitutional changes to expand his powers, compared with 39 percent in favor, a survey by respected pollster Datanalisis showed.

expect the strongarm tactics to increase immediately, and as in San Francisco, i suspect we’ll find floating “NO” ballots in boxes in the southern Caribbean soon.

I saw this coming a year ago and moved to NZ. They haven’t disarmed this place yet, even though their politics is very left/green. Those pricks are going to once again fuck the economy my old man spent 3 and a half years on the Burma Railway to protect. Worse is that it’ll take a major change of heart and minds in the generation of morons the leftys have sent out of our schools for the last 15 years to get rid of them again. As an indication of the calibre of person in this gaggle of hacks, the deputy leader, Julia Gillard makes Pelosi look like a patriot. She was employed full time for a group called The Socialist Forum between 1984 and 1986. This group was formed to facilitate absorption of some former Communist Party of Australia members into the Australian Labor Party after a schism in the Communist Party. Seriously, you have no idea how far left they are. 70% of the cabinet are former labour union officials. And labour unions in oz aren’t about just skimming pension funds, they are full on ideologues, anti-US, anti-capitalism etc. The environment minister’s the ex-frontman from Midnight Oil!!!
I’ve been saying it for a year now, the australian people will rue the day they elected that smarmy little prick and his coterie of nobodys.

Canada is truly a very beautiful place

Coast to coast Sir, you will find a particular “flavor” in each provinces. I now live in New Brunswick (retired here in ‘95) city of Moncton, to be precise, and the Misus and I are just a hop away from Prince Edward Island, with gorgeous places to visit (we rent a cottage there from time to time), great people, and we’re also 40 minutes away from the Nova Scotia border, full of hospitality and warmth. Yes, I love this Canada, despite many political shortcomings, and when I was looking at it from 40,000 ft, its immensity was always awesome. Glad you spent some time on our soil my friend… and thank you for the compliment regarding our Armed Forces, but our soldiers are so few, so precious few…

I served and/or was deployed from one coast to another during my service, and each time, I rediscovered the true beauty of this nation. That is why you have noticed how passionate I become when I perceive a threat to our freedom and culture. Like you, I will continue to stand guard wherever I can.

I have to wonder, Brendan…maybe things have changed that much in Oz, I do not know. But I still find it difficult trying to comprehend the Aussies knuckling under to anybody. Kyoto expires, hopefull permanently, in five years. It is deliberately flawed, designed to cripple the US economy. Yet, her in America, despite all present and looming difficulties……….looking around me, talking with people……..I somehow suspect the muslim rats skulking about here, those insane far left losers here, those people will be held in abject contempt and disgust. They seek to silence us with dependency……….I prefer a more honest, direct approach. In my world, if somebody wishes to destroy what I own in a fit of pique, a lefty tantrum…..I would exercise my right of self-defense by killing as many of them as I could before I bought the farm. I will not now or ever live under their thumb. I will choose death first, preferably theirs. For me, it is not simply a feeling, but also a decision. oh fer criminy sakes, man. Buck up.

From what I read, is sounded like the people had Conservative fatigue and needed something different for a while.

    Welcome to democracy.

Take a look at our history. We don’t change necessarily because we can’t stand the alternatives, we do it because we need something different for a while. Since most of you have problems thinking past Carter, just look at what we’ve had since then.

We elected Reagan because we grew tired of six years of bleh.

We elected Clinton because we grew tired of twelve years of blah.

We elected Bush because the Supreme Court said we did. But the fact that it was even close was indicative of there being a whole lot of people tired of the previous eight years.

If Gore had won, he would have lasted until 2004 because that is about the limit of any one political party before they are tossed out.

The point is, people will always want change. When presented with choices, they like to shake it up a bit, otherwise thngs begin to get stagnant.

No Aussie Prime Minister has ever been elected to a fifth term — and John Howard was certainly not going to be the one to break that record.

    Get over it.

Oh, I’ve been “over it” for a long, long time.

But it still doesn’t change what happened, and it certainly doesn’t change what I just said about the electorate getting party or candidate fatigue.

I only threw in the comment about the Supreme Court because I KNEW that it would get a rise.

It still doesn’t change the fact that in the 2000 election, the majority of people hadn’t yet grown tired of the Democrats in office. (no, I don’t need the damn reminder of Electoral College jabber — I am making a point about the PEOPLE getting tired of a ruling party)

If Gore had taken office in 2001, he probably would have been voted out in favor of a Republican candidate in 2004 because that is the usual limit for ANY party to hold the presidency. (Yes there have been exceptions with FDR, but I am talking about the past fifty years.)

Australians are really no different than any other nation’s people. They were tired of Howard. The French were tired of Chirac. We are tired of Bush.

Change can be good. As far as it being a “lesson” for us in the next election: I doubt it. We aren’t a parliamentary system (although it does have its merits) and most people aren’t paying that close of attention.

It still doesn’t change the fact that in the 2000 election, the majority of people hadn’t yet grown tired of the Democrats in office.

Wrong. Neither Bush nor Gore secured over fifty percent of the vote.

You’re also not factoring in the amount of eligible voters versus actual ballot casters.
I seriously doubt the “majority of the people” even exists in real terms.

The Yahoo news link to the election results were the first thing I read this morning. I was stunned. While I think Deej has a point that after a certain period people just want to try the other side again, and in most cases lately it isn’t all that clear where the two sides differ, however I am deeply concerned about our upcoming election. Change for the sake of change isn’t always a good thing.

I’m relatively certain that this country won’t fall if it doesn’t go the way I’d prefer, I’m just not looking forward to going through it. I won’t go into detail of why I have this foreboding, we’ve covered it all before, but like someone pointed out above, maybe in the twelve months to our elections we can see the errors of our Aussie brothers ways and correct our course.

That’s assuming enough of the electorate in the U.S. even knows where Australia is on the map and outside of Dundee, crocs, Steve Irwin and kangaroos that there is an actual functioning country down there facing the same problems we face.

Brendan, if you do decide to move and take your last stand in our country, I’ll meet you at Los Angeles International, and buy you a beer or five during your holdover to get to a state where common sense at least guides their laws.

    Brendan,
in Colorado (the most beautiful of the 50 states, btw, except for the California folks who have really overstayed their welcomes) you can own firearms as a non-citizen with legal residency or as an alien on an immigrant visa. There are also exceptions that allow ownership for nonimmigrant legal aliens (work/student visas if you have a hunting license, for instance). A concealed firearms license would be yours almost for the asking as long as you’re a legal resident of Colorado with the clean record, etc.

Two states (Alaska and Vermont) don’t even require a license for concealed carry. 39 are required to issue licenses to all qualified applicants. As noted above, stay the hell away from Illinois, Wisconsin, Hawaii, California, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, New York, and Delaware.

Guys, do not sweat it too much.

It was all domestic. Iraq and the GWOT was not even mentioned in the campaign. OK, OK, we get an earwax-eating poonce for a PM for probably two terms, but consider this.

The last time Australia had a Labor government the US-Australian Alliance was very close. Even though Rudd is a smarmy little bugger, he is a former diplomat (which is bad) who fully understands the strategic realities of Australia.

So expect no changes in foreign policy except a few empty symbolic ones. Sure, we will draw down the combat force (500 men) in Iraq - but we will build it up in Afghanistan. We will still get 2 big LHD’s, 3 ‘air warfare destroyers’ etc

Where we will get screwed is domestically, on taxes, the ending of the economic boom, on social policy, and on union power. But even this has a silver lining. The people who elected Rudd think that the boom will continue despite him being in power, because they have never known bad government.

Well, they are about to learn. Because it is bloody hard to have full employment, low interest rates, and no inflation all at once. They just threw out the people who did that, thinking that it is an easy thing to do this.

Boy, are they wrong. So we’ll have an amusing, if tough, couple of terms as the people who most benefited from Howard learn the lessons they have to learn about losing jobs, rising interest rates, and inflation destroying their savings.

But do not worry about Australia pulling a Spain.

    Won’t happen.

The #1 reply to an international survey about Howard loss: “Allahu Akbar!”

I am now looking into emigration. I’d prefer an open carry or good gun law state( can people who are applying for citizenship own guns?)

Well, here in Montana we’ve a good reason to come here and one not to. On the positive side our state constitution says that carry licenses are a “shall issue” matter meaning that if they can’t find a good reason NOT to issue you one (i.e. being a convicted felon) then they have to give it to you.

The negative though is that my state is currently being invaded. Californians have set us in their sights. Like locusts they’ve ruined Colorado and Washington and are looking for a new state to f-up. They’ve decided my state is the new target to move to and do exactly what they’ve done in the past. Another part of their plan is to cut the people off from the land by declaring the state 1 big “wilderness area”. So you’d be stepping into the middle of a battle but it would be nice to have reinforcements.

Gun laws to dream about (castle law, concealed carry hunting etc)
Motorcycle laws to dream about: no requirement to be safe, no helmet laws.
    Roads to dream about
Politicians are the same everywhere, note the wording on the referendum on nov 6 in Dallas re a motorway over a river parkland: vote yes for no motorway, vote no for a motorway.Sheesh even in Aussie this would not be allowed.
Now brendan, Pick Texas, warm to hot like Queensland, really friendly people like Tasmanians, lots of open spaces and areas to hunt, REALLY cheap houses, and cars and SUV’s you can only dream about in aussie at half to a quarter the price in aussie.
Find a Texan to sponser you in for a green card and your in. The Texans love Australians.I love Texans and Texas.
Ive even got a Texas Flag and a Texas ornament for my car!
PS Im coming back OFTEN as I have a daughter there, and Id move too but my saner half has relatives in Western Australia and she woudnt move. Sigh*** Ill just have to put up with the lefties destroying everything in Australia for a while longer. :em03:

    F. Hawkins

    Mate, my guesses on this:

    Will Australia become
    1) less innovative?
No, but that innovation will be less able to be expressed. SO innovators here will do what they have always done - go to the US.

    2) more socialist?
No, although certain policies will (which is where we get screwed by higher taxes, less employment, higher interest rates). I have done a LOT of work over 25 years with the US military and in the USA, and that enables me to say this. Many Americans think that Australia is like a smaller USA because the cultures look similar. Well, the cultures are similar, but Australia is a very different country. I recall a long period spent with a bunch of USMC officers (bloody good blokes) aboard USS Coronado where we discussed this. We thought that the difference lay in the nature of the place when settled. In the US, if you took 50 families with settler gear and stuck them in the average US wilderness in 1700, left ‘em absolutely alone and came back 10 years later, you’d find a thriving little town and a settled farming area around it. If you did the same thing in Australia, you’d come back and find them all dead. It’s a hard land. So Australia has always been a place where it took groups of people PLUS coorperation with some sort of government to survive. That is not generally true in the US. So Australia has always had a strong ’socialised’ (not socialist, but with parallels) streak. We have had to, no choice. The flip side of that is that people did not much like it, so we have mechanisms to deal with idiots and lefties (but I repeat myself).

    3) more pro Al Gore?
Yes - we have carpetbaggers, bullshit artists, liars, spivs, cowards, f*ckwits and thieves here too!

    4) have a recession?
Yes. Removing the Work Choices program will cost $12 Bn and about 200,000 jobs all by itself. Probably including the jobs of one or two of my sons. I am just so bloody pleased!

    5) have a depression?
Nah, I have a good wife, explosives, guns and rum to cure that!
In all honesty, I do not think so until China’s economy implodes. But then we all feel the impact.

    6) less secure?
Maybe, but not where you expect. Because the Labor party are cack-handed drongoes and brainless neocommie ideologues who are convinced that UN-style solutions (platitudes, blather and hand out money to local power elites) work best, they will apply this in the Pacific. This is exactly the WRONG thing to do out there, so the security and stability of the Pacific states will erode. They are all on the knife edge (except Samoa), so our security will erode as these countries collapse and the Chinese move in.

    7) have more meaningless jobs?
Hey, this is the ALP! Less jobs overall by 300,000-400,000 in the first year after they repeal Work Choices is my guess.
    8) become a free fire zone for jihadists?
No. Will not happen. For all of it, Rudd might not be able to go two rounds with Winnie-the-Pooh, but he is a foreign policy wonk who understands our security environment. That is ingrained, nobody here has forgotten the Australian strategic nightmare of 1942. Besides which, his first big domestic security policy is creation of a homeland-security like agency. It is named like yours but we think will have a very different structure and form. Now, if he does that, and the jihadists start blowing things up and killing people here, the backlash will be a thing of wonder and awe to behold.

Nothing will get us more pissed off than that.

    9) lose market value?
Hell yes. But not yet. We are still commissioning vast new iron ore mines (contracts in the 20,000,000 tons a year range from ONE mine), and money is flooding in. Times are marvellous, and even these idiots will take time to f*ck it up.

    10) wish they were not so stupid?
In about a year or two, when the boom is ending, unemployment is rising, interest rates are rising and people who over-borrowed are starting to lose their houses, and things are getting tougher - f*ck yeah. Me and mine will be OK, but as for the inner-city greenies and luvvies, and those who honestly thought that keeping full employment, low interest rates and low inflation was easy? Rape ‘em in their neocommie ring-pieces with red hot chainsaws.

I think we can expect a brain drain and talent exodus. Where they are going to end up will be interesting. I don’t think it will be the USA after the next election. After all, we’re in the race to the bottom too.

Yes, it will be the USA. Governments come and go. You survived Jimmah Carter and got Reagan. You survived Billary and got President Bush. We survived the astoundingly bad Keating, then got 11 years of Howard’s brilliant management. So we’ll survive this and get someone better too.

Occasionally, a democratic people who have had it really good for a very long time have to be reminded about the people and policies they really have to avoid.

As for me, I cheered myself up with a really nice (and inexpensive) 1916 made Remington P14 .303. Perfect for pig hunting. As I need this sort of cheering up after such a trainwreck of an election, I am also acquiring a French 1917 8mm Berthier as well (gotta get Graf brass and Lee dies for that ‘un). And a M1895 Steyr 8mm straight bolt.

A man can’t have enough of that sort of cheering up.

You know, on fwench rifles, at the end of the barrel, you can attach a bayonet for parades or a white flag for battles…

Bit harsh - I am starting to collect WWI rifles, and the French Army’s performance in WWI was incredible. They learned terrible lessons about modern firepower at the Battles of the Frontiers, applied serious tactical changes fast enough to stop the Germans cold at First Marne, nearly destroyed by Nivelle’s offensives (imagine a ‘Pickett’s Charge’ with 2,000,000 men), fought the Germans to a standstill AGAIN at Verdun (which was not called the Corpse Factory for nothing), rebuilt itself several times and was on the offensive on all fronts during the period when the Imperial Army finally crushed the German Army in the field in Flanders from August 1918 with Monash’s ‘battlefield symphony’ (see Hamel) applied on grand scale.

The Berthier is a fine rifle, and has enough design quirks to make it a very interesting weapon (see Haas). I cannot wait to load ammo for it and get to the range. That’ll take a while, the 8mm Lebel cartridge is not made any more. Thank the Lord for Graf and Sons.

    #45 Odahi:

The People’s Republic of Maryland voted in a Democrat governor, and it’s already started.

It’s been on a slide for years. That’s why I escaped Maryland and moved to Florida. Most of the people here still seem to have at least partial head-out-of-ass status.

For the Montana comment. DON’T LET THEM IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or at least insist on a thorough psychological evaluation! The KaliKommies will infiltrate and destroy, same as they did the rest of the American edukayshun sistm. Thoroughly indoctrinate them in the ways of the TRUE America. And if they don’t, I’m sure there are lots of empty valleys and hungry coyotes.

Your “hero” of the Left shoved his nose into the election system of a sovereign nation.

Oh you of the very short and selective memory. Your Howard shoved HIS nose into our election system in 2004 when he endorsed Bush.

And so what if he did and so what if Gore did? Both men are entitled to voice their opinions, aren’t they? Besides, just how much sway do you think either man has in either country?

Why is it so hard to accept the fact that the people just wanted a change, and they could just as easily elected a ham sandwich if it were running against Howard.

After all, how many times do you think I’ve heard the “get over it” routine since Bush was (s)elected?

Yes, I used that “(s)elected” bit because right now you are feeling pretty much like half the people in this country have felt for the past seven years. By and large you “get over it”, but you certainly don’t forget it. You might call it sour grapes or sore losing, but I disagree. I just call it disappointment. Nothing more.

Republicans in this country are going to be wearing these same shoes this time next year. Why? Because people want a change. Nothing more, nothing less. If a ham on rye were running, it would have just as good a chance of winning than any of the other candidates. People are tired of baloney.

Besides, I don’t see any real damage happening with Rudd. If people don’t like him he will be gone come the next election.

    So shut it, Allyn.

Welcome to the political wilderness. Wander around for a while and come back. It will all be alright — I promise.
