…which will be bad news for the “alternative” crowd in Mass-o-Two-Shits, who’ll have to go elsewhere for their instant gratification now.

The clowns who keep electing Fat Ted and John Fuckface just might be stupid enough to let them get away with it too. At any rate, it shows how Nanny Statism continues to march onwards.

Lawmakers on Beacon Hill are set to consider a proposed ban on spanking children in the commonwealth.

NewsCenter 5’s Shiba Russell reported that the issue is set for debate at a Statehouse hearing Wednesday morning.

The Boston Herald reported that State Rep. Jay Kaufman filed the spanking ban petition at the request of an Arlington, Mass., nurse who wants Massachusetts to become the first state in the country to stop corporal punishment.

If this proposal does become law and parents are caught hitting their children who are under the age of 18, they could be charged with abuse or neglect.

Leading, of course, to even more unruly, snotty brats who, having never encountered limits or consequences prior to their 18th birthday, will be prime candidates for celebrating their 19th in jail. If they’re lucky.

But don’t argue with the Almighty State. They’re not your children and, besides, you have no clue what’s best for them. Leave that to overpaid, barren spinsters with a theoretical education in child rearing.

Then, when your undisciplined runts enter real life and are smacked in the face with real consequences, they can always blame you for not doing a good enough job.

Wow, meaning that parents cannot discipline their own children, leave that to the judge… We think we have a problem now with most of the little “free to do anything anytime” darlings, just you wait…

We have such a thing here as well Misha I and the kids even have a “help line” should they need to report “violence” to the “proper authorities”. Violence in the form of a drunken parent out of control, yes, but reaching
for the phone because Mom and Dad reprimanded you for coming in late!?!? My oldest son once told me “if you don’t get off my back I’ll call Children Services right now and they’ll come and take out away”. He was 14 at the time. I replied, in a very even tone of voice (a bit like a rattler waving at you with its tail…) “Son, if you can reach the phone you’re welcome to it, but keep in mind that you will not dictate to ME in this house”. End of argument. To this day, he says “thank you for being a father when I needed one”. He is 33 now, started a career in the infantry, transferred to the Navy 5 years ago, and I love him dearly (like my other two, of course!). But since the State and its minions seem so anxious to raise our own children, THEY are the one who should be made to stand in the courtroom when the little darlings get their sentence and then explain to them as to why, for not recognizing that they are responsible for their actions, they are going to jail to serve their term…

That nurse should be made to visit young delinquents serving time and actually asked them WHY they are incarcerated. Just mitght change her mind. On second thought, no, people like that are blinded by their “defender of the world” shield…

Asswipe. (the nurse, oh Emperor, the nurse!)

    And foist!!!

    ***WARNING***SERIOUS FOLLOW-UP***

If, after you’ve come out from under the RCOB, you find yourself wondering “How has this come to pass?”, I urge you all to get a copy of Diana West’s “Death of the Grownup”.

She clearly and eloquently demonstrates how this has all been a long time in the making - as well as giving some much-needed perspective of “The Worst Generation” and the motivations behind their part in setting all of this up.

Her writing style requires some patience until you get used to it - she gets to a point where you swear she’s beating the given horse a little too long, and you start saying ‘Ok, now you’re reaching’… whereupon, she throws you a left that leaves you shaking you head, going: “Ah, Damn - she’s right.”

Tasering, however, would remain legal. (Nope, not gonna say it; too obvious.)

Seriously, Hardclimber, I had a similar discussion with my teenage son recently. I told him that, if he wanted to report me to child services, he’d be at liberty to do so as soon as he got out of the hospital. End of discussion.

My father (g-d bless him may he live till 120) never spared the rod, anD I love him even more for that. He always use to say “you can learn my way or the hard way”

And we (all 10 of us) grew and are growing up as good human beings. No one uses drugs (though I smoked pot a bit 16-17) no one was arrested for any crimes… no one talks impolite to my parents… no one dropped out of school… in fact every one above 18 has a high school diploma and higher.. and everyone works when they need money.

My parents have provided us with the best education, clothing, food, the best healthcare you could dream of (I had 14 operations from the BEST surgeon’s in the world!!) a loving and caring home.. but if you made trouble in school or were impolite to a elder you got a smack on the butt! If you got caught stealing from a store at age 9 (me!) you got a whipping with a belt… and you can imagine I never stole again! Computer and gaming time was EARNED! both me and my older brother skipped a grade… if we were sent to the principles office we knew we’d get a spanking at home.

Be polite, honest, hardworking, diligent, caring, compasionate, dedicated, devoted, responsible etc..

I have lived in israel (a very aggresive society) since I was 17, I study online and pay all my bills. I attribute this to my upbringing.

My grandfather when he retired as a engineer for the state of NY, was a subsitute math teaches in the publik skul system. He would lament the fact that he couldent spank the kids. You had 1 kid stabbing the other with a pencil and another destroying the class.. He quit after a few monthes.

One of my closest friend’s father was a inner city publik skul teacher in buffalo ny for 20 years.. and a religious jew one of the few white people… well 1 kid was always starting up and being violent so he said “aight lets rumble” and they wrestled and he beat the kid.. he ruled with a iron hard but was also very involved with after school things.. he won teacher of the year in NY and wrote a book “skul caps and switch blades” not a movie..

He has a Phd and he all the time laments the fact that kids cant be spanked.

I heard this bitch on the radio today. Her whole thing started when her daughter came home from school telling her of a friend who got a spanking…in fucking high school.

My boyfriend is dealing with a 16 year old who is quickly becoming a bitch on wheels. He is considering sending her to military school or something…she is getting that bad. He heard this too and said, well, if I can’t punish my daughter, does that mean the court will on my behalf? He thinks a night in jail would do her wonders. The biggest issue is disrespect and that would be awesome, so he thinks.

My father beat our ass when we were bad and I’m happy he did so. I’d rather have him do it and put me on the straight than learn from some thug in jail or on the street.

Rep. Kaufman’s party affiliation is Democrat, although that isn’t mentioned (unless you pull up the same story on Fox).

I’d be the first parent to say that spanking may not be the best way to discipline a child, depending on the child. Spanking doesn’t work on my son, for instance. Restricting his game or computer time does. In a recent rather extreme case, I packed up the Wii and told him it was going to be sold unless he shaped up (he did).

I’d also be the last person to take that option away from a parent. My oldest daughter didn’t care about loss of privileges, time outs, etc. Corporal punishment was the only thing she responded to. She did threaten to call CPS once (she was in the middle of beating up my wife when I walked in the door and intervened). I handed her the phone, and told her she would never set foot in my house again if she made the call. Oh, and we’d press charges for assault. She believed me and didn’t call.

While beatings had an effect on me, it was more of a determination not to get caught as opposed to ‘dont do it’. Then again, all I ever crossed the line on was forging report cards, and stealing food. I’m still ashamed of the food thing for two reasons.

    1. That I stole something.

    2. That I couldnt figure out a way to get enough food without stealing.

To this day I give to food pantries on a regular basis. and I’m known for feeding random people for no other reason than I can. That is, -when- I can. 770 dollars of disability and some odd jobs doesnt go very far.

In another article @ Foxnews.com, Kaufman’s chief of staff says:

“He does recognize and understand the concern many would have on legislating parental rights,” said Sean Fitzgerald, Kaufman’s chief of staff, the Herald reports. “But the problem is the boundary is often overstepped. The right to hit should never be the right to hurt.”

That dope’s been hittin’ on something he rolled himself.
The idea is to connect the offense directly to an undesirable punisment.
If not then I say give all current inmates in our prisons a t-bone steak dinner, apologize for detaining them, give them a cash settlement and abolish the penal sytem altogether.
    The bill reads thus:

    (a) For the purposes of this section, the following words shall, unless the context indicates otherwise, have the following meanings: -

“Child”, any person under eighteen years of age.

“Corporal punishment”, the willful infliction of physical pain or injurious or humiliating treatment.

Humiliating treatment could mean anything the “Child” finds difficult or uncomfortable.
Crap, that would be anything contrary to any discipline attempt by the parent. You couldn’t even call a quiet time without objection to it’s “Corporal” definition, and as to Child Abducting Services™, it sure would increase their power over families by a wide margin.
Kathleen Wolf should go back to rolling up bandages and stop stirring up the Fear Mongering Demmy Dopes®™.

I just love how all these people who don’t have to live with our children tell us that corporal punishment of any sort is a bad, bad thing, and that we’re supposed to use reason with a two year old.

When I was looking into getting my teaching certificate (which I gave up on due in large part to the idiocy of the whole thing), I had to take a developmental psych course. One of the first things the book told us was that until the age of 10 or so, children’s brains aren’t hardwired to think that way, and while before that age you want to try to reason with them to help teach them that skill, you can’t expect it to work. Which makes perfect sense to me as a parent, having watched this development in my own children (and my baby sister for that matter).

Obviously the CPA folks have never had to study developmental psych since they keep insisting that we have to use methods that scientific studies have shown don’t work on a significant number of children.

For adults only. :em41: Isn’t there an element of age-discrimination here? :em95: Like what if Barney Frank wanted to spank one of his young friends? Wouldn’t that become a lifestyle issue? I get a real kick out of watching parents try to reason with an out-of-control toddler…

Parent: “Now Stewie, that wasn’t nice hitting your sister with with a baseball bat.”

Stewie: “Grunt Grunt Screech” (Interpretation - “Piss off! I hit the bitch cuz she was pestering me AND hitting her made me feel better!)

Parent: “Go tell your sister you are sorry.”

Stewie: “Screech Grunt Screech” (Interpretation - “Say WHAT??? Kiss my little rosy red ASS! When you aren’t lookin’ I’m going to hit the bitch again!”)

Parent: “OK, I’m going to count to three…”

Stewie: “Grunt Screech Grunt” (Interpretation - “Yeah, I’m scared. Time out. Big whoop.”)

Parent: “One… Two… Don’t make me say three!”

Stewie: “Screech Screech Grunt” (Interpretation - “Get on with it already! And don’t start over four or five times like you usually do! The sooner you say it, the sooner I can do the time and pummel sis with that 4 iron you have propped against the wall.”

Until children can learn to effectively reason, and more importantly, empathize, you cannot really negotiate with them. From 18 months to about 7 or 8, they are solidly egocentric and tanning their backsides is the most effective way to get their attention. Stewie doesn’t give a shit that he hurt his sister. He only gives a shit if something hurts him. When they are older and can think more abstractly, taking away things, restricting freedoms, and even guilt trips are much more effective than spanking. Of course, the much greater danger here is not whether to spank or not to spank, it is the gubmint (at the behest of a Massachusetts Patient Advocate Deluxe™) intruding on the rights of families to raise their children as they see fit.

Hmmmm…. I wonder if Massachusetts would apply the same restrictions on Muslim families?

Mom, who was a lot more canny than I gave her credit for at the time, knew that and would delay the punishment, drawing out the moment as long as she could. Dad, on the other hand, would flail away. It got to the point spankings didn’t deter me from mischief. I hated them but they could be survived and the pain would go away fairly quickly. By the time I was seven or eight Mom’s Jedi mind tricks (and this was WAY before Star Wars) were more dreaded than Dad’s belt. Then something funny happened. Something dawned on Dad or Mom clued him in but their punishments seemed to coordinate. It was like they were working together against me! My brother on the other hand was oblivious to Mom’s mind tricks but feared getting a spanking.

Every kid is different and a spanking to one might be the worst punishment imaginable while their sibling would laugh it off. How is some bureaucrat going to be able to determine what punishment is more effective than the kid’s parents?

It goes without saying (or it should anyway) that there needs to be a limit to what is allowed and parents who abuse their children should be punished themselves but the option to spank needs to be on the table.

Hell, I got spanked (and even slapped across the face) a few times, and it was the quickest way to get my attention and tell me “hey bub, you crossed the line”. I never would have dreamed of calling “the ‘thor’ties” because I got my hide tanned. Now, my nephew threatens it if he doesn’t get to stay up late.

Of course, my response is, “Feel free. They’ll come, not see a mark on your hide, and toss you in juvie for making a false report.” He has no poker face whatsoever. :em99:

I can remeber as a child, growing up in the wonderful Disco 70’s, my dad had a white leather belt bout an 2 inches wide hanging in the closet. Don’t recall him ever wearing it but it was there for one purpose and one purpose only for when my brothers, sister or I royally fucked up ( can still remember that phrase ” wait till your father gets home” )
I remember like it was yesterday my brother getting it cause he pushed my other brother into the wall breaking the plaster and putting a rather large knot on his head. the worst part of the whole spanking deal for me wasn’t the woopin’ pops gave you, it was the fact he made you go get the belt. I only had to do that once, took me a good ten minutes to walk 15 feet and back getting the belt. I don’t remember getting spanked, if it hurt or not, but man I remember that walk.

I have one teenage boy and his younger brother is six years his junior. I’ve had to smack both their asses a couple of times when they were younger, haven’t had to do it for a while all I have to do is threaten them with a whippin and they usually shape up pretty fucking quick.

    Don,

I grew up 11 miles east of Boulder. We used to ditch high school just to go be entertained by the hippies and druggies. We would go watch the anti-war demonstrations and the subsequent awss-whoopin’ put on them by the cops and National Guard……great theatre, in spite of being so close as to be tear gassed twice.

Have you seen Eric Cartman doing the starting lineup for the CU/Nebraska game last week?

As a displaced Colorado native and a committed South Park fan (not to mention being a land owner in the REAL South Park), I can say that South Park pretty well nails what funny about Colorado….from the self-important politicians to the worship of the Denver Broncos to the educated/indoctrinated college freaks who think they know what’s best for the rest of us.

The PC nuts who infest Boulder and Estes Park and Evergreen (to name a few formerly great places) ALL need a good whoopin’ in my book…..nightstick style

If I didn’t get my ass beat at least once a week I was doin’ something wrong. I’d usually develop a case of the red ass the day report cards came out, or my teacher phoned home, or the day I got kicked out of altar boy school, that sort of thing. My fellow Imperials, I deign a solution that should make all happy. Or at least most. How about we let the parents birth and raise their kids till about age 7. Then, we take them and throw them into a military style education system till they are 18. After that, they are free to go about as they please (within the confines of the law.) Wouldnt that be just grand?

    chuck:
That is the way it was when I was in school - get sent to see the principal, get your ass whooped by the principal, get to call your parent and tell them what you did and what happened to you in front of the principal, then spend the rest of the day dreading the second ass whooping you knew was coming when you got home.
Nowdays, instead of reinforcing the disipline recieved at school, parents sue. And we wonder why the youth are out of control.
Now think southern hemisphere and a little country NZ. Remember a 13 year old kid in a latin class who figits. sent to the “COMMONROOM” also known as the torture chamber to await punishment. waited and waited, nothing. Walked back to class and said” theres noone there. Everone laughed. The teacher replied there will be soon!!!!.back I went and the latin teacher arrived to cane me. Head under the table no i couldnt ride the blows and a positive attitude by him because I had made him look stupid(he was) when I came back and wanted to know where the commonroom beater was? I remember this well 50 years ago,but it didnt hurt me physically, it enhanced my resolve that those in authority that are not derserving of respect wont get any. I was instantly the scool rebel. Never in the top teams at sport nor in the top of the acedemic table. At the school prizegiving I was called out for something and the school went ballistic with clapping. The master of ceromies, a NZ admiral was impressed, he said” you must be popular”. I wasnt. I was what lots of others would like to be but didnt have the guts to try..
Entered the profession of Pharmacy and have been there since 1962, no regrets, a great profession, populated by people who knuckle down to government pressure, without question. I never did that, and remained an outider.
Now tomorrow, 30 nov 2007 I retire, Ive sold my pharmacy and look forward to keeping the idiots accountable.

OT(on target) the nurse probably had in mind the few who beat their babies to death( here and there) but thats no excuse to punish the whole population . The PC of all this is beyound the pale.99 pewrcent of people love and cherish their children, its the education (stupid) that changes the children( see posts above about threatening the offspring).
There needs to be some accountability in the education process. Pour the stream into something useful, do not suppress an individuals potential. No one fit suits all will ever succeed. Maybe we need more home schooling where the little darlings are put into line by the parents.
Rant off and hi to all the rotties.

I came from a home with an abusive father and I still say that ass beatings should remain LEGAL!

My father beat me and my brother at the drop of a hat and I don’t believe in that. His child rearing methods certainly didn’t help my ability to raise my kids, that’s fr sure. But, I will always believe that if it is deserved, it should be properly delivered. Sure, other things should be explored first. There is just a point when severe pain can be the key.

That crap of taking away toys and time outs never did shit for my boys when they were young. Hell, tearing their asses up didn’t do a lot better, but it did tend to get their attention.

The real problem I have with things such as the no corporal punishment laws, is that the state will not assume responsibility for the kids when they are out of control. You. as the parent will be the one dragged into the courtroom when they commit the serious crimes.

If they want to control the methods of raising children, then they should have to pay MAJOR child support to the parents. Hell, they are somewhat reducing biological parents to the status of a Foster parent. They’re not yours, you just feed and cloth them.

Congrats, sir, good on ya. I’ve retired from one profession (that of “arms” as they always told us the military was) and have started on a second. Can’t wait until I get to your point, enjoy.

    Cannon comments:

Hell, they are somewhat reducing biological parents to the status of a Foster parent. They’re not yours, you just feed and cloth them.

Not somewhat, my friend, totally! And believe me, the state is not willing to share in the responsibility to rear your children, you’ll be the one taken to task when the wild one violates the law, and the “I wasn’t allowed to correct my child’s behavior because of the laws of the state” WILL NOT be a defense. And if that child you weren’t given the option to use corporal on as corrective measures uses YOUR gun for something, you can bet your ass it’ll be you under the jail, not them.

I too had an abusive, heavy drinking step dad that was not one to spare the belt. While I used spanking very little on my kid (twice, exactly), after the second time all it took was what she calls “the look” and she was a little angel again. And, before the bleeding hearts say anything, each spanking consisted of a single whack on the ass. Nothing more, but that was all it took. She’s now 24, and remembers both times vividly. And “the look” still works.

What I’m sick of reading is the state trying to impose the belief of ONE person (the nurse, in this case) on the ENTIRE population as “that’s the RIGHT way”. There is no cookie-cutter “right way”. Everything in life is situational, and it’s supposed to be. Hence the term “Free Agency”, the ability to make decisions based on OPTIONS, not what some asswipe thinks is best.

And if you think spanking is a bad idea, now’s the perfect time to head to any major department or toy store and listen to the repeated “stop that or I’ll put you in time out” comments in the aisles from the harried parents that would REALLY like to take the little brat to the car and bust that ass…
