For those of you who weren’t here giving your undivided attention to this site (BC is making a list and will be punishing you later), the load times at this site ground down to a virtual standstill for the past two days, for some unknown reason.

First it was working, then it wasn’t.

On Friday night, Misha contacted Hosting Matters and lucked out by getting Annette instead of Stacy. She told Misha the following:

“you had tons of sleeping mysql processes, just chewing up resources without doing much of anything else. I’ve restarted mysql to clear that and restarted apache as well, and that’s brought things more into line with what we want to see. You may want to check whatever app(s) you’re running and make sure they’re not using persistent connections, as that’s the major cause of this sort of thing.”

So Misha rolled up his Imperial sleeves and rooted around under the hood, pulling wires and twisting wrenches to see if he could find what the problem was. He settled on a plugin called Wassup a real-time visitor tracking doohicky that will literally “spy” on whoever comes to this site. Call it our own personal NSA listening device.

Before you start screaming “violations of privacy!”, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. The plugin just takes the same information that any server collects and displays it in real time — as you navigate through the site.

The problem apparently was that the database table the plugin created started to get fairly large — about 11 Mb. When Misha brought this to my attention, I went and emptied it and we gave each other cyber high-fives and bragged about how smart we were.

Unfortunately, a few hours later we were experiencing the same problems of slow, lethargic responses. THIS time it wasn’t Wassup causing it. So I just went in and pulled the plug on everything, and deleted all tables that were non-essential stock, out-of-the-box WordPress issue, and put the default theme in place.

That was last night.

Now, I am going to start bringing things back on line. I have a SQL response thing at the top of the page so I can keep an eye on the SQL database. Last night, even with everything turned off and running stock, the SQL server would take up to 25 seconds to do 43 queries. (Ideally it should be under a half second, and three seconds is considered “slow”)

Actually, we DID have a plugin that was malfunctioning badly last night, so that was absolutely correct, but that isn’t the case now. I know that because I disabled the plugin tonight and it changed absolutely nothing about the situation, so it’s something else this time.

Something that is placing a heavy load on the server, whatever it might be, but H.M. already offered to look into that for me, so I suspect we’ll find out.

Anyway, just clarifying here. Don’t want to blame anybody for something they didn’t do.

    Cool.

I have visited sites that crawled … often the culprit was some outside crap that was loaded on the site, and not the site itself.

AtlasShrugs is a good example … all the live video on that woman’s site just makes it crawl.

When I display video on my blog, you get a image only, and a link to the liveleak/whatever page … I absolutely will not make someone load crap in the background …

You want it? Then click on it.

( Things do seem to be running rather quickly now. )

Very true. Thing is, this site was running quite well because Deej had gone through all of that and streamlined everything/updated old code that needed polishing. Everything was going great with the new site design — Until yesterday, when all of a sudden everything went in the crapper for some reason.

So it’s not something that suddenly got added to the site and caused a meltdown, because nothing at all has changed for quite a while around here.

AtlasShrugs is a good example … all the live video on that woman’s site just makes it crawl.

Indeed. Particularly when LoserTube decides to have another server hiccup and every site embedding video from them goes “screech” and stops dead in its track. Also, there’s something about YouTube’s embed code that just doesn’t work, at least not on some sites that I’ve visited. On Hot Air, for example, it will play the first part of a video, and then the progress bar will start jumping all over the place and the video will stop.

But that was an aside. Again: Nothing has changed around here that would cause a sudden breakdown, so the problem lies elsewhere.

Actually, Kristopher, they are still crawling in the background. I noticed it yesterday when I was doing some plugin updates to several sites at once.

I use CuteFTP Pro, and I can have several sites open at the same time and upload the same file to all of them. I noticed yesterday that the three Hosting Matters sites I was updating took almost three times as long to upload as the other sites. This is unusual. Hosting Matters was literally crawling on its FTP uploads.

This made me suspect that they have a serious router issue going on, and not a server issue. I’ve looked at the server status page for this server and I don’t see anything out of parameter. There are no SQL warnings going off, which makes me wonder why they figured it was a SQL thing this morning.

    Hmmmm.

Amen with the sites full of embeds. I use Firefox with the Flashblock plugin, which shows a blank placeholder area with a “play” button in the center for Flash & Youtube embeds. The page loads quickly & I don’t have to suffer thru a load of anything I don’t tell it to load. I’ve seen pages with 2/3 of them covered in “play” buttons. Sheesh. Some webmasters…. forest & trees, ya know.
Dunno about the MySQL thing. I’m struggling mightily with Fedora 8 on a spare work computer trying to get it all to work myself, so I can re-write the company’s site (an internet-only marine parts business) from a hodgepodge I inherited to a more streamlined database-driven site. I figure I can cut 30% of the file space and cut down load times if I can accomplish this. Then I figure we’ll go with Hosting Matters & get rid of the Winbloze server we currently run on.

Myself, I just think that’s lazy reading. I suffer doing that, a lot, by having to go back and reread poorly written things that don’t make sense.

And knowing the root of a word has helped me figure out what was meant without overly disturbing the train of thought that the author was going for.

I had a problem like this when I agreed to host a friend’s site. He used some software package called “Pligg”… which occasionally will use up 100% CPU time for days playing with the database.

Anyway, there’s nothing I like better than reducing a site to it’s core functionality and building up from there. Well, besides sleep. In this case I would have opted for sleep, and set things up so the SQL server rebooted nightly.
