Yep. It’s 74 years ago today that Congress finally realized that Prohibition didn’t work and repealed the whole sorry mess of government meddling, so pour yourselves a tall one, such as this mouth-watering Long Island Iced Tea, and let’s have a toast to that!

And remember, just as gun control laws would eliminate guns from society today, Prohibition completely eliminated alcohol from society back then. Not to mention how illegal drugs have completely disappeared. None of those around, thanks to our brilliant legislators in DC.

    Fellow LC’s of the Empire

In order to show my full support to this most glorious occasion, I hereby pledge to:

    a. Have at least 4 cold Sleeman’s Cream Ale this very evening.
    b. Have another 4 cold Sleeman’s Cream Ale once the first 4 have been dealt with.
    c. Drink to the health of each and everyone of you (liver permitting) till the Missus drags my intoxicated carcass to bed.
    d. Repeat steps a, b, c over the upcoming weekend.

If this is not showing proper rejoicing, I don’t know what is… I mean, no more guns, no more drugs, no more crime, yep, this is a great reason to celebrate our fine governments works of wonders. I’ll even drink to the health of the morons who keep dreaming up these socialists gems called prohibition and gun control. May their houses be burglarized by an armed, drugged up to his eyeballs goblin this very night! :em93:

    Cheers! :em03:

But what would solve the problems caused by the effects of substance abuse (”legal” and “illegal” substances) ?

One way to “solve” the drinking problem part would be for someone to try to keep up with a Canadian ex-Air Force officer. That would cure that very quickly, although I understand The Emperor is no slouch in that department, correct me if I’m wrong… For solving “illegal substances” abuse, normally an autopsy takes care of that…

And might I add that I NEVER touched “illegal substances” in my entire life, and very proud of it…

Prohibition completely eliminated alcohol from society back then.

Actually, it didn’t completely eliminate alcohol from society, it just drove it underground. Prohibition laws did not prohibit the use or possession of alcohol already in place one year after the prohibition took effect.

Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.

So many establishments stocked up on alcohol.

To get around the prohibition on selling this stockpiled alcohol, they formed clubs that you could join for a membership fee. The money was for joining NOT for the alcohol itself. The alcohol was freely given away to its “members”

Because of the limited supply of legal alcohol, the “cocktail” was invented to mask the taste of “bathtub gin” and “rotgut whiskey” and/or water down good alcohol. The Long Island Iced Tea you pictured above is just one of those Prohibition Era drinks.

The easiest way to get alcohol during Prohibition was actually legal. This was by way of prescriptions. A doctor would be paid a set amount of money to prescribe a certain amount of liquor a day. The doctor’s signature became extremely valuable and sometimes gang wars were fought over who owned what doctor. Forgery was also common and gangsters often stole stacks of blank prescriptions. These would also be on sale in a speakeasy.

    Other Examples:

    1924 Prescription
    1924 Prescription for whiskey

There were still a handful of distillers allowed to operate all the way through prohibition. American Medicinal Spirits Company was one such company and was one of only a handful that were able to immediately ramp up production once prohibition was lifted.

Then there was the illegal distilling and traffic. It was how the Kennedys made their money.

Now how is that for Prohibition Fun Facts?

Just a teensy nitpick: Prohibition was effected by the 18th amendment to
the U.S. constitution. The 21st amendment, once it was ratified by enough
states, repealed the 18th. So it was not “Congress” that “repealed the
whole sorry mess”, it was 38 state legislatures.

It was a sorry mess, and a good example of why we should be careful
about what we try to accomplish by fiat.

The St. Lawrence River was used to smuggle in all kindsa hootch during Prohibition. They would drop crates of liquor off the freighters and the smugglers would pick it up in small, fast boats. The uncle of a friend of mine was into it big time. He used a speed boat that had two eight cylinder engines bolted side by side. When the revenuers chased and shot at him, he would hunker down between the engines for protection and keep going like a madman. And you’d better believe that they’d shoot at you. Back then the exercise of deadly physical force was much less restricted. You could shoot at any fleeing felon.

Another piece of trivia about prohibition. There was a guy named McCoy who anchored a sloop just outside US territorial waters. Rum runners from the Bahamas would bring real rum to his sloop where the smugglers would pick it up in fast boats, then make a speed run to shore.

This became real popular when the stockpile of real hooch dried up and bathtub gin started becoming prevalent. Speak easy’s would say they had “The real McCoy”, meaning they had the good stuff from McCoy’s sloop.

DAMN! I’m on call today! No celebrating “Repeal Day” for me… I’ll catch up tomorrow. :em03:

I have a relative who runs a very high-tech copper still and produces some marvelous moonshine! He does it right. Quality ingredients, dumps the first 25% so his “consumers” don’t die or go blind, and he is on a first-name basis with every cop in the county. I’ve enjoyed his sour mash, rum, spiced rum, a quickly-aged whiskey using partially burned oak, and something that is very nearly 190 proof and burns with an almost invisible blue flame.

“Drink, young Padawan. Strong in the force it is. Your narrow white ass it will kick, yes.”

I tell you, his distilled spirits are better than most of the stuff on the liquor store shelf! Gotta tell you, his “aged” whiskey and rum are the two best things I have ever put in egg nog. Going to pay him a visit in a few weeks to restock!

Hope dem Revenoo-ers don’t shut him down!

My extended family had a bit of smuggling history as well. We are from the Rhineland in western Germany. After the war, that was just so part of the French occupation zone, but very near the border to the British zone to the north. There was a lot of wine growing in the area and thus the rural townspeople generally knew how to produce wine and spirits at least a fair bit.

However, the Frenchies hogged all the wine production or established themselves as the only legal buyer from the growers and producers, naturally to a very low price.

That encouraged both moonshine production and smuggling, since the Brits also liked to booze and were happy to pay the smugglers for it. Several older uncles have a couple of good stories about it. One of them had somehow conserved and hidden a boat from the Wehrmacht military engineers and was able to use that for high speed smuggling runs across the Rhine river because he had a friend who was a river navigator on the Rhine before the war.

Another one used pork smoking (which was legal when done for the occupation troops) to disguise the distinct smell of burning spirits and was able to produce significant quantities of moonshine this way.

And in loyal support of all my American friends I will toast my beer tonight to the repeal of the Prohibition.

Jebus, it is a friggin’ novelty site!

I know some of you don’t believe that your lifestyle, diet, and vices might actually effect your health and longevity — that if your waist size is almost the same as your height, you might actually be killing yourself decades before you would normally be going.

If you are 5′11″ and weigh 270 lbs, then face it — you are fat. Obese even. There is no amount of muscle mass that is going to explain that kind of weight.

BMI by itself isn’t necessarily an indicator of bad health. There are formulas that adjust the BMI based on your fat percentage and muscle mass.

But I only posted the damn Death Clock for its novelty value. Try to look at it that way. You don’t even have to choose the BMI values on the thing: it is already set for the optimal value.

    1) If you want to smoke cigarettes, I think you should, but I don’t think these wonderful anecdotes about smoking relatives living into their 90s are necessarily relevant to most of the rest of us. There are different ways your body can metabolize the ingredients of tobacco. Some metabolites are less toxic than others. I suspect that was the case for these long-lived smokers. (Yes Major, I’m talking primarily about different P450s)

    2) not drinking wine is a risk factor for dementia

    3) some degree of alcohol (not sure how much) is good for your heart

Boy, I miss Long Island iced teas. I have had them in the past several years

I think decriminalizing marijuana would be a smart thing to do–it’s not like it’s physically addictive like alcohol.

By the way, the single largest indicator of your longevity is your genetic makeup. If the vast majority of your ancestors died before the age of sixty, don’t bother saving for retirement. Even the cleanest and healthiest lifestyle won’t get you past your wearout date.

If the vast majority of your ancestors lived into their eighties or nineties, you’re gonna have to work at it to be killed earlier. I have a fairly long life expectancy, since my ancestors either lived long or were killed by various vices or cancers from which I do not suffer. Killed in their otherwise vigorous seventies and eighties, that is …

That was actually only a half-hearted ‘Ugh’ - I really like the idea of the ‘counting-down-the-seconds-you-have-left’ part.

    However…

If you are 5′11″ and weigh 270 lbs, then face it — you are fat. Obese even. There is no amount of muscle mass that is going to explain that kind of weight.

Little guys always seem to want to say crap like that.

    6′00″ - 304lbs

Not the best pic for it (only one I have - staff member said “Hey-turn-around-I’m-takin’-pictures”), but that’s a 54″ chest, 21″ biceps & 32″ thighs

…and a bone-density that makes them have to turn the MRI up to ‘11′.

    So blow me, Deej :em93:

First and formost: This is for entertainment purposes only.

Second, some results may are likely to vary.

Third, did you try the “optimistic mode”?

Fourth, my grandfather lived to 107, and he smoked up until the age of 100, when my grandmother told him he should quit because she was tired of smelling the tobacco. By smoking — he smoked one cigar every evening. Apparently, my grandmother made him cut back at the age of 50, because up until then he always had a stogie in his mouth.

I guess part of it is moderation — smoking the occasional cigar or cigarette isn’t going to kill you — smoking two packs a day quite possibly will. Some people are susceptible to

20 years ago my wife (registered dietician) showed me the BMI. at 5′9″ and 135lb i was 25lb under the ‘normal’ range. i could not float in sea water because i had nearly zero bodyfat. a few years back, about the time i hit 160lb (bottom of the ‘normal’ range) they (whoever they are) changed the BMI and presto, i’m within 10lb of being overweight and 135lb is in the ‘normal’ range. two years ago i hit 174lb and was able for the first time in my life able to float at the beach (still sink like a rock in fresh water). this is the reason current stats how that people 20 to 25lb OVERWEIGHT have a better chance of surviving surgery or severe illness. the only right way to determine your weight to fat ratio is to weight you the put you in a tank of water and measure your displacement at full exhale. the current BMI is b :em72:

Well, I was born in Bonn, but spent most of my youth 20 clicks south of it, right above the Ahr valley. Really nice rural area, very down-to-earth kinda people. I spent days on end in the woods. Also lived and studied in Berlin, also an awesome place, but very different :em93:

Remind all liberals that the most lasting legacy of Prohibition is NASCAR!

Just to clarify: NASCAR (stock car racing) began when the rumrunners of the Prohibition era met on Sundays to race. They honed their intrepid driving skills by literally outrunning all the po-lice and dem Revenoo-ers! They tended to take Sundays off so racing at blinding, sometimes deadly speed became the after-church event du jour!

OT: since it’s 12/7, time for me to go blindfold all my Japanese co-workers with dental floss!
