Sometimes we hate being right, and this is one of those times.

When the terrible news broke about the horror at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska, our second thought (our first thought was a combination of sheer horror and prayers to G-d for comfort and strength to the loved ones of the victims) was “we’re willing to bet that this is yet another one of those ’subhuman beast somehow, mysteriously ignores ‘gun free zones’ signs and goes to town on innocent victims in what amounts to a ‘free fire zone’ cases.”

We also had a pretty solid feeling that the MSMidiots would somehow, mysteriously, fail to report on that “tiny” fact. Well guess what? We were right. Again:

The horrible tragedy at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. received a lot of attention Wednesday and Thursday. It should have. Eight people were killed, and five were wounded.

A Google news search using the phrase “Omaha Mall Shooting” finds an incredible 2,794 news stories worldwide for the last day. From India and Taiwan to Britain and Austria, there are probably few people in the world who haven’t heard about this tragedy.

But despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.

Gee, we wonder why? They certainly had everything else covered, didn’t they? Within hours they breathlessly reported everything about the psycho bastard: His history as a “troubled youth”, the make and model of his weapon, the contents of his suicide note, everything except for his shoe size. But somehow, inexplicably, they failed to notice that yet another mass murder committed with a gun was committed in a “gun free zone.”

Which is, by the way, about as “professional” as writing 15 articles about a “mysterious plane crash” and not once mentioning that the engines had fallen off or that the plane hadn’t been refueled prior to take-off.

If the MSM journaljizzmers with their impeccable credentials and googly-umpteen layers of rigorously fact-checking editors fail to notice the signs plastered all over the mall, is it any wonder that a psychopath criminal misses them too? The poor guy probably wasn’t aware that he was breaking the law. If only he’d seen the signs, he would surely have had second thoughts and decided not to go murder eight innocent people. After all, bringing a gun to a “gun free zone” is a CRIME, right? And we all know that if there’s ONE thing that cold-blooded, heartless, psychopathic murderers respect, it’s the law.

Back here in the real world, if you do some basic Google research (we wouldn’t expect anybody to match the flawless in-depth research done by the Einsteins of the MSM. They’re so much better than we are, after all), you’ll find that every single massacre like this one that has been committed since some gummint imbecile dreamed up “gun free zones” has been committed in one. Every. Single. One.

If we were the scientifically minded type, we might almost think that there’s some sort of correlation here. But that would be ridiculous, because surely The Deciders™ in the MSM would have noticed and reported on that, if that were the case. Must be nothing but a coinky-dink.

Now, of course, the thing that you’re bound to get thrown in your face if you suggest that maybe Open Season on Innocents, er Victims Guaranteed to be Defenseless, er Gun Free Zone signs aren’t all that safe and therefore not much of a good idea (except from the criminal’s point of view, of course), is that “nobody would’ve been able to do anything anyways, even if they had been carrying, because those things just happen too fast.”

Which isn’t a completely astoundingly asinine and imbecilic argument. Because yes, Virginia, they can happen even in areas where everybody and their cousins thrice removed are carrying. Yet, somehow, they don’t seem to happen there, do they?

The civic value of law-abiding citizens bearing arms isn’t in “we need somebody there to return fire”, although that certainly is a bonus if the situation drags out for a while. It’s in deterrence. Because somebody in such a place just might be carrying, and they just might be right next to you when you pull your rifle out of your duffel bag, or whichever method you’ve decided to use in your sick, deranged, criminal mind. And then your “blaze of glory” will suddenly turn into a hollowpoint unceremoniously planted between your beady, piggy eyes before you even get a chance to take aim.

Remember: Most of those notorious nutcases want to be noticed, they long for their deaths to “mean something.” If there’s one thing they don’t want, it’s to be executed on the spot by a law-abiding, gun-toting civilian like the common criminals that they are. The slime that committed the Omaha atrocity ended his suicide note with “now I’ll be famous.” (See what good that’s going to do you in Hell, you swine). And if you don’t believe us, we invite you to look past incidents up, because even if you don’t believe that murderers prefer “Gun Free” zones, the criminals certainly seem to.

And, of course, in addition to pure deterrence, allowing law-abiding gun owners to carry adds greatly to the probability that one is in the immediate vicinity of the goblin when he decides to carry out the atrocity.

It’s not a guarantee, nothing but death, taxes and corruption in politicians is guaranteed, but neither is locking all the doors and windows in your house a guarantee against burglary. That doesn’t mean that you’re going to leave them all open in the future, does it? Think about it.

We pray that Almighty G-d may embrace the ones left behind and grant them peace, strength and comfort, and we pray that the imbecilic “gun free zone” laws are repealed as soon as possible.

Before they and the politicians who embrace them claim any more innocent victims.

I knew within seconds of hearing this report for the first time that there had to be a “gun-free zone” in place. Several accounts of men and women grabbing their children and taking cover, or running away, but not one mention of anyone returning fire. I immediately thought “why the hell didn’t anyone try to stop him …… oh, wait ….. they probably don’t have concealed carry there.”

I pray for the loved ones of those killed - how bad does that suck? You lose your dad or sister or son because they took off early to go Christmas shopping.

Makes me want to carry 2 ccw’s - one for me, one for whoever else will help, if necessary.

It’s just more victims to throw before the altar of government control and subjugation. The idiots who feel that people shouldn’t be trusted with the means of self defense and should rely instead upon others see these innocents as more statistics to advance their cause.

And since the “gun free zone” was imposed by the liability paranoid mall owners, they should be sued out of existence by the families of those “statistics”.

The irony is that Nebraska is a concealed-carry state. However, as you pointed out, Misha, there are places where weapons are not allowed. Another glaring irony about this is that the MALL SECURITY was unarmed, as well. So, even had they apprehended the shooter, there’s nothing they could have done.

Apparently, security had him on surveillance from the moment he entered the mall. He had his rifle hidden in a wadded-up hoodie. Why they didn’t notify local police at that time is a mystery.

The city is reeling over this. There are gangs in north Omaha, and no one with any brains ever goes there, but the mall is in a “money” part of the city…one of the busiest and nicest malls in Omaha.

I was fortunate not to have lost any family or friends or acquaintances on Wednesday, but there are eight families who will never be able to celebrate Christmas again…

Guns don’t kill people. PEOPLE kill people.

Mysteriously, the shooting in Ogden, UT, hasn’t been mentioned yet in connection. I refuse to be so cynical as to suggest that it’s because an off-duty cop engaged that particular shithead, ending the massacre until enough cavalry arrived to place a Federal HST 180gr. into the murderer’s cranial vault.

After all, the Utah mall was a Victim Disarmament Zone as well. The officer shouldn’t have been carrying.

I saw some news coverage that provoked a RCOB moment. Some reporter said that, in the event of a shooting where you can’t get to a door, you should curl up in a ball. Not look for another exit, or prepare a plan to bust out a window or engage the killer with your CCW iron or pocketknife or throw food-court falafel at him, but assume the fetal position.

Goddamn stupidest thing I seen all week.

    MISHA

I loved the “sheep dog” remark. I thought that the few of us here in the Ft. Rucker, Alabama area were the only ones living up to that code or knew what it was all about. Where did that originate?

Both my wife and I carry concealed, but I have a slight problem here at Ft. Rucker (as with every other Military Installation). As a member of the ARMED FORCES I can carry just about ANYWHERE around here, except on Post. Sure, give a guy an M240G and a helicopter on which to mount it, and send him off to deal with the moose-limbs, but when he gets home, disarm him while at work. I don’t get it. I pass the background checks, instruct rifle/pistol marksmanship and PMI, and am an Army schooled ARMORER. But, for the love of God, don’t let me defend myself and family while at the PX or Commissary. Well, at least not LEGALLY.

As a “sheep dog”, I feel that it is more important to be a protector than to abide by ALL of the laws, especially the ones that violate the very Constitution that I am sworn to uphold. Thank God for citizens/law enforcement officers who know better than to believe everything that they read; to include the “Gun-Free Zone” non-sense.

I believe it is my duty as a father, husband, America, and Christian to protect my family. Not the responcibility of some 20 y/o Private First Class with a bage and a piece ‘o crap M9, or ANYONE else for that matter, to show up and identify my remains. I put my safety in the hands of Almighty God, my abilities, and HK. Not the MP’s. And, if the Army thinks that I am the only one violating their on-post, no-CCW laws…. they are SORELY mistaken. We are Soldiers AND sheep dogs, 24/7.

M and I were doing some Christmas shopping the other day over at the Riverfront. There’s a Bass Pro Store right next to the Riverfront shops area. You can carry in Bass Pro…but you’re not allowed to carry in the “shop district”. There’s only about 30 feet separating the two sections. M and I haven’t been over to the other side since we both got our CCW’s earlier this year, since we refuse to go where we can’t carry, except on base, and where we have no choice but to go. Tuesday…we said Screw It!. We went to a couple of shops there, and even had lunch at Hooters….fully armed. Hell the worse they could do was tell us to leave if they found out. We were not about to trust our security to a bunch of unarmed bicycle “cops” and a few overweight security guards on golf carts if someone decided to go postal. :em96:

Lt. Dave, I don’t know where the “sheepdog” quote originated, but there is a great retelling of it (and some other important truths) on Bill Whittle’s blog in the “Tribes” article. You can find a link on the blogroll here under “minister of truth”. Love the “no fame” thing too– after Columbine, there was one paper that kept the story off its front page so as not to give the little criminals what they wanted. Defiance can be so beautiful.

As for the rest of it– I don’t even know where to begin. Do I rail against all the people who excuse criminal acts on the basis of mental instability? Do I wonder snidely if someone in power will declare us all to be to be Omahans for a day? Do I point out that refusing to fight back does NOT gain the moral high ground; it only paints “self defense” falsely in the same light as criminal behavior? :em98:

*sigh* I think I need to bring my blood pressure down.

Malls are not public property; they are private property and the owners may determine if our weapons may be carried there. This is a very sorry state of affairs, but I am all for the rights of property-owners. We’re any one of you to appear on my own property with a weapon, and without my permission, there would definately be a shootout we’re you to refuse to leave. That being said…

Pressure should be exerted upon the owners of these sorts of properties. Find out if there are property and safety insurance incentives behind keeping the stores ‘Gun Free.’ Go the lefty-route and protest the owners via boycotts, letters and submission of letters to your local papers. The ‘empty-holster’ idea above is perfect. Further, harrass any other agencies that influence the ‘gun-free zone’ policies, through financial means, or otherwise. Take it to these people’s asses!

I know that this all sounds like a pipe-dream, but short of committing a Felony by carrying your weapon onto private property, there’s really little other choice….Felony=Loss of CCWP.

Drudge has a surveillance picture of the kid aiming his rifle. Our local news wouldn’t show it.

Also, from the Drudge link, this incredibly STUPID statement:

While several shopping malls increased patrols after a lone gunman fired an assault rifle into a crowded store in Omaha on Wednesday, industry officials acknowledged that such tragedies are difficult to prevent.

    (emphasis mine)

Hey, idiots…let law abiding citizens CARRY, or at the VERY least, arm the mall security. One well-placed bullet would have ended it.

Malls are not public property; they are private property

Actually, I believe Malls are- like restaurants, hotels, and bars- houses of semi-public accommodation, which obligates their owners to a higher degree of accommodation than purely private places. Bars, for example, must serve anyone not visibly intoxicated, and who is able to pay- unless that person is threatening, harassing, or endangering patrons or employees.

IMO, forbidding someone who is legally entitled to carry a weapon from doing so on private property would seem to be about the same as forbidding people from carrying any other legitimate tool, like a pair of pliers. Pointless, and ultimately unenforceable.

Per the suggestions that the mall ought to be facing lawsuits over their prohibition of legal concealed carry:

Michael Bane, host of the Outdoor Channel’s “Shooting Gallery” and “Down Range TV” programs, reported on his blog that he’d been receiving reports - as yet unsubstantiated - that the management of the Westroads Mall had been taking down their “NO GUNS” signs in the aftermath of the shooting, lest the newsies photograph them as part of the press coverage.

If true - Bane is still trying to confirm those reports - it looks like the mall is already trying to cover itself.

Since many will use this to promote the idea that we simply need “more laws”, consider that if it were illegal to murder people this would never have happened, right?

From the essay “Multiple Victim Public Shootings, Bombings, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Handgun Laws: Contrasting Private and Public Law Enforcement” by John R. Lott and William M. Landes, written April 1999:

Few events obtain the same instant worldwide news coverage as multiple victim public shootings. These crimes allow us to study the alternative methods used to kill a large number of people (e.g., shootings versus bombings), marginal deterrence and the severity of the crime, substitutability of penalties, private versus public methods of deterrence and incapacitation, and whether attacks produce copycats. Yet, economists have not studied this phenomenon. Our results are surprising and dramatic. While arrest or conviction rates and the death penalty reduce normal murder rates, our results find that the only policy factor to influence multiple victim public shootings is the passage of concealed handgun laws. We explain why public shootings are more sensitive than other violent crimes to concealed handguns, why the laws reduce both the number of shootings as well as their severity, and why other penalties like executions have differential deterrent effects depending upon the type of murder.

Says the Instapundit: “It seems to me that we’ve reached the point at which a facility that bans firearms, making its patrons unable to defend themselves, should be subject to lawsuit for its failure to protect them. The pattern of mass shootings in “gun free” zones is well-established at this point, and I don’t see why places that take the affirmative step of forcing their law-abiding patrons to go unarmed should get off scot-free.”

If I’m not mistaken…for a business to post a legally binding sign for no guns it has to be of a certain type with the wording in a certain format.

If it’s simply a “We Don’t Want Guns Here (because we’re Gun Fearing Pussies and think that this sign (which by the way maketh uth feel tho much thafer, and provideth much needed color and intereth to the landthcape)” will scare off all those eeeeevill guns that are running loose just waiting for a chance to kill us all” Sign….you can legally ignore it.

I think it depends on the State, Mrs. M, but I know that it’s true for Texas.

Furthermore, it has to be displayed at ALL legal entry points to the facility.

If the sign does NOT meet the above very specific guidelines, you can ignore it to your heart’s content, because it’s not legally binding in any shape, form or fashion. As a daddy I know, for instance, that the “signs” at Chuck’E'Cheese’s aren’t correct, which amuses me no end because it means that they don’t mean squat.

Note: This does not mean that you can refuse to leave if the property owner discovers that you’re carrying and asks to you leave the premises. At that point, you have to comply or you’ll be trespassing, but they’d have to walk around and ask every single one of us individually.

By the way, Misha, this is what I wanted to tell you…he was a certified mental patient, he had been committed before, he did not own any legal weapons as he was forbidden, and whatever guns he did have, were taken from him.

It was revealed yesterday (Friday) that the taxpayers of the state of Nebraska paid more than $265,000 for mental-health care of the mall killer, in two and a half years.

Those are we state taxpayers; no federal funds.

Two hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars.

That included short-term institutionalization, intensive prolonged psychiatric care, and of course a whole cafeteria of pharmaceuticals, all paid for by the taxpayers of Nebraska.

    So he stole one.

THAT is what you can use in reply: the murders were carried out with an ILLEGAL weapon, and therefore all the gun laws in the world meant jack shit.

Gun laws only work on the law abiding, and I will also point out that we, who have lots of gun laws, also have lots of gun crimes.

    Signage.

That is how Kansas law is. There is one sign, and one sign only, that applies. This sign has a silhouette of a Beretta 92 with the red circle/slash over it. Sign must be at least six inches at the circle, and cannot have any other lettering or information on it. Anything else means precisely jack shit.

If you are carrying in opposition to the sign, you must be asked by the property owner or their representative to leave, and refuse to do so. From this point, a call must be made to law enforcement, and, upon arrival of LE, you must refuse the request to leave twice in front of LE.

At which point you are going to jail.

Easy enough to avoid, i should think.

To my knowledge, no one has gone down on this charge yet…

If you’re KaBar is the full size Ka-Bar of USMC fame and Asian peoples nightmares, it would be illegal to carry it ANYWHERE concealed, except here in Florida, and then you would need a CCW.

Florida is unique in that we do not issue concealed FIREARMS licenses, we issue concealed WEAPONS licenses. Knife aficionados can legally carry a freaking katana here concealed if they want to. And can figure out how.

Then a big Oooh-Rah to ya PC. Be careful not to show it to any older Japanese citizens. Some of their friends probably had an unpleasant experience with one.

I don’t know the laws in California. In Florida a knife is only considered concealed if carried on yer person. A firearm is legal in the glove compartment without a CCW. Or in a holster under the seat etc. It has to be in an “enclosed container”. Out on the seat would be considered the same as concealed. Interestingly enough, carrying a concealed weapon is only a first degree misdemeanor, not a felony.

In Kalifornia I would imagine the laws concerning knives are fairly more strict. Check your states legislative web site. If ya got any questions e-mail the pertinent statute and I’ll take a look. Disclaimer, my legal advice is worth a lot less than what you pay for it.

As far as the ethics are concerned, this is How it Oughtta Be (TM)

In order to legally prohibit weapons in an area open to the public, there shouldn’t be Gun Free Zones. They might more properly be called Protected Zones.
1: There must be a clear and legible sign, of a standardized sort, at all entrances.
2: At all times, a certain minimum number of the facility’s staff, determined according to the building’s size, must be armed, and capable of adequately responding to a violent incident on the property, as judged by a standardized firearms competency test and the good-faith opinion of the property holder.
3: The facility must have a place where visitors can safely check their weapons, and retrieve them upon leaving, without harassment. A locker room of some sort should be sufficient in most cases.
4: The property holders must assume full legal responsibility for the physical safety of anyone on the property, with respect to violent attacks. Those attempting to enforce a protected zone without fulfilling the requirements will be charged with one count of reckless endangerment for each individual subjected to such attempted enforcement.

i’m not sure. at one place the code states ‘ fixed blade or anyother knife capable or great harm or stabbing death’. if your knife is a lock blade with a blade length over 2 1/2 inches it may be in violation on campus but not anywhere else. sometimes it seems as though the law is written so as to confuse. it also says unless you have a permit to carry concealed you must have the gun in a locked container ( not in the glove box or utility bin) or in the trunk and only to transport directly to and from a gun class, range or gunshop. UNLESS you have it openly in a holster on your belt. in any case the less other people know the better. take care.
