But not very often, thankfully.

The undisputed highlights of last night’s “Half Hour News Hour” were the ACLU “ads”, the first one of which was so funny that I’ve already forgotten what it was all about. No, seriously, I actually think I chuckled once or twice. That may, of course, be due to me being more than willing to chuckle whenever the ACLU takes a beating, no matter what, but I’m pretty sure that they were at least marginally amusing.

The ‘moron struggling, haplessly, his way through town as an underlying thread to the show’ was funny too. When Monty Python first used it about 30 years ago, that is. I believe it involved Picasso painting while bicycling. Not that it means that it’s an idea that should never be recycled (pun intended), but it helps if you lay off the poop jokes. Unless you’re performing stand-up for 2nd graders, that is.

The T-shirt skit? It would have worked a lot better if Surnow’s overpaid writers hadn’t felt the need to explain the joke. It’s pretty obvious to anybody with a brain that the show’s writers are completely unfamiliar with the concept of humor, so here’s a free tip: Never ever explain the joke. EVER. That being said, there’s no denying that making fun of libtards’ love of sticking mass murderers on T-shirts and parading around town with them is a worthy subject.

The upside to a wholly unimpressive debut? The Usual Suspects are whining, moaning and pissing themselves in self-righteous indignation that somebody would dare make fun of cancer, drowning polar bears and starving Koreans.

Wrong, Debs. There are few things MORE hilarious than poking fun at taboo subjects. Just ask the Pythons (that you would undoubtedly have sent to re-education camp and/or counseling, had you had your way and been around back then. Thankfully, you weren’t).

Of course, in order for taboo-skewering to work, you have to have actual writers, as opposed to your talentless hack friends that you feel you owe a favor, which is why Surnow fails.

Oh, and Debs? What the fuck is up with the headline to your drivel?

“FOX Comedy Show Juvenile and Mean Spirited Like A Bully”

Thanks for pointing out, helpfully, that bullies are juvenile and mean spirited. Honestly, we would have had NO idea what you were trying to say with that hed if you hadn’t tacked those three words on at the end.

Keep that level of writing up, and Joel Surnow just might hire you.

    So let me see…
If I take her enlightened and nuanced evaluation to heart, taking to task the left’s sacred cows is mean spirted and juvenile, like a bully, and taking aim at a celebrity who has injected himself into the public eye as some sort of environmentalist/expert is inexcusably beyond the pale?

No wonder we can’t have a reasonable conversation with these people.

Like I said: I’ve seen worse. Such as any given episode of SNL, but that’s setting the standard pretty damn low. That being said, it DID elicit a chuckle or two which, having seen the previews, was quite a bit of a surprise to me.

I guess that for something that’s been in writing for two months, I’d expect more. If that’s the best they can do with two months of prep, then Heaven help us when they only have a week.

Now, if they’d hire, say, Iowahawk on as a writer…

Writers work best with the deadline between them and the restroom.
Two months,, that’s just inviting over-polishing.

With all the great right wing satire found here on the web, why wasn’t this more funny? The Rush and Anne promo was the most humorous thing associated with the show.

The left seems such easy prey for satire. The only possible reason that maybe they aren’t a good target is that it could be that it is hard to lampoon something that is already farcical to start with.

    But that’s just me.

I didn’t watch. Sounds like I didn’t miss much. They spent 2 months getting it written? I agree with Cheapshot. Too much time. Think about the rants and writings on the net that have you spewing shit all over the keyboard. They’re mostly from the gut and driven by emotions, off the cuff sort of things.
