…our original German sling and G3 cleaning kit just arrived, so we’re currently sitting around sobbing with unashamed nostalgia. Particularly over the cleaning kit which brought back many memories, precious few of them particularly pleasant (unless memories of wasting 2 hours out of your allotted 4 hours of sleep on getting a rifle clean enough that you can eat out of it can be considered “pleasant”, that is).

But that matters not. Now we have the REAL tools to keep our Lyudmila clean, happy and flawlessly functional.

Now we just need to find ourself a set of original German walnut furniture and a STANAG mount w/ a Hensoldt scope on it and we may just dissolve into a giant, messy, emotional puddle of nostalgia.

And lest we forget, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to LC Randall, who just so happened to have a nice load of mil-surp 7.62×51 laying around that he had no need for, so he donated it to us. Not to mention the thoroughly delightful lunch that it was our honor and privilege to spend with that fine LC and 82nd AB Vet as well as his utterly charming lady friend. He wouldn’t accept payment for the ammo, so we made a donation to the Magen David Adom instead. Heaven knows that they can use it with all of the splodeydope animals running around over there.

Thanks for that too!

Now, I’ll go cuddle Lyudmila a bit.

    Bloody awesome, Ozzman! Thanks!

Now, it IS quite ’spensive and, seeing as how the BlogAds business seems to have slowed down quite a bit, it may be a bit TOO ’spensive, but I’ll definitely bookmark it for when I win the lottery.

Ahhh… Just seeing a picture of it made me all mushy.

Damn you, Ozzman! Now I have a BAD case of “Want-itis!”

You DO realize, of course, that the Imperial Heirs will be feasting on Ramen Noodles for years as a result, don’t you? :wink_ee:

Nah, I’ll just start posting PayPal buttons at the end of every post, like this one:

Oh yes, LCs. I’m begging. Don’t make me start offering blowjobs as well! I’m a shameless, whoring, disgraceful prostitute when it comes to firearms and their accoutrements :blush_tb:

Nah. My addictions are my problem. But I do need a cold shower now.

My thanks for your generous donation! Also, I’m glad to hear that you, as a good LC, keep your priorities straight. Home and hearth first, and I would feel terrible about anybody out there neglecting their own readiness in favor of mine.

We’re going to need every living, breathing soul if this country continues its slide to Hell, and knowing that the guy covering my six is as well-equipped as possible helps me sleep a lot better at night.

Here’s to hoping that you pick up a truly sweet deal in Phoenix and knowing that you will use it well.

    Thanks again, brother!

If I can ever get myself out from under the morass of BCIS paperwork to the point where I can actually walk into a store and buy a gun again (I could, apparently now I can’t due to them adjusting my status) I’ll be happy to arm up and watch any damn number that’s indicated…..

Funny thing Misha, I -had- an actual Stanag mount for my -airsoft- guns of all things. Turns out the surplus originals are cheaper than the Japanese copies, or at least where in the early 90’s.

If I was still home, I’d just mail you the damn thing, it was the only piece of airsoft kit I didn’t sell.

Danger … Danger, master Will Robinson!

Those cheesy black plastic stocks are part of your US parts count for 922r purposes.

Swapping them for german or spanish wood will make your rifle an unlawfully imported assault rifle, in violation of Bush Sr.’s executive order.

You will need to swap in two more US made parts to get your count up. You need a total of 6 US made parts ( seven if you include the muzzle device ). Your parts count for a PTR-91:

    Receiver
    Trunion
    Barrel
    Forend grip
    Pistol Grip
    Buttstock
    Cocking handle

These are the foriegn parts on a PTR-91:

    1 bolt
    2 Bolt carrier
    3 Trigger
    4 Sear
    5 Hammer
    6 Trigger houseing
    7 mag. Floorplate
    8 mag. Body
    9 mag. Follower

So … if you leave on the US made muzzle brake, you need to swap out one part for a US made one.
PTR sells some US made parts here.

A US made hammer, sear, trigger, or trigger housing will do the job for you.

If you swap out the muzzlebrake for a proper flash hider, add another US made part, or buy a US made flash hider.

I’m sorry that this crap is needed … but the last thing you need is to have some ATF-hole try to grab your rifle for a 922r violation. Unless you intend to kick off Thermoplaye II early.

Thanks for the warning, Kristopher. I already knew, but it never hurts to point in out in case somebody else is in danger of unknowingly breaking the law.

What’s even more wonderful is that this PTR is a late model, and apparently JLD started rolling some more parts of their own (I took it apart and went over it with a fine-toothed comb), in my case they’ve helpfully added a home made trigger AND trigger housing. At this point I’d have taken the trigger housing apart as well to check the sear and hammer (never know where there might be a stamp on that hammer), but since I already had the two parts I needed, I didn’t bother.

I don’t know about the bolt and bolt carrier either. The bolt doesn’t seem to have any markings I can find, and the stampings on the bolt carrier, although I can’t tell where they’re from, certainly AREN’T H&K. I’d recognize those in my sleep. Of course, that doesn’t mean that it’s made in the U.S. of A., it could be from any number of other countries :smile1_tb:

You won’t regret it. I hate to say this, the G3 having been my service rifle, but the PTR 91 shoots even better and a lot more comfortably to boot. I’ll never once again suggest that you can’t improve on perfection :smile1_ee:

I noticed this and thought you might want to look into it.

Not a bad price, really, but it doesn’t say if it’s plastic or wood. Standard issue was wood up until the late 60s, after which they went to plastic.

Regardless of whether you want wood or plastic, you’re well advised to get a new set of furniture, since JLD did cut one corner by not placing a heat shield in the standard issue forearm. I have no idea why they did this, since it’s a silly omission that can’t possibly have saved them much in production costs.

The absence of a heat shield won’t hurt your hand, but if you try to fire it like Heckler & Koch intended for that design to be used (it’s a battle rifle, after all), you might well end up melting the forearm (you’ll notice it getting soft in your hand well before it starts running down and giving you third degree burns, don’t worry - lol).

At any rate, you’re well advised to get a forearm with a heat shield. If you can find a U.S. made one, you won’t have to worry about 922(r), but if it’s a late model that will be a moot point. The advantage of the German Military Issue ones is that they’re guaranteed to have a heat shield.

The folks at PTR are using P.O.F. parts kits … Pakistani made HK license rifles.

So your parts are either US made, or Pakistani made, or Pakistani purchased German HK parts.
