Apparently a sit-down with a few of his friends as well as the shit-storm that descended upon him, and rightfully so, upon likening those of us with “Evil Assault Rifles” to terrorists, helped Jim Zumbo to see the errors of his ways:

Thank you all for letting me speak. Yes, I know the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and hunting guns, and yes, I promise you I am now dedicated to educate all shooters that we must all stick together regardless of our gun choices, and also tolerate the firearms others may choose to use if they are dissimilar to ours. I will do everything I can, within my power as a journalist and public speaker, to protect the 2nd Amendment and America’s gun owners.

I could’ve just updated the earlier post, but I didn’t want it to slide off the front page.

Now, I realize full well that a reasonable person might be skeptical about this sudden run to Damascus, I can’t say that I’m entirely without skepticism myself, but I’m still going to say “OK, good enough, apology and retraction accepted.” Until proven otherwise, I’m willing to take your word for it and accept that you mean what you say, Jim.

1) You’d have to be an enormous weasel to say what you said in your apology and not mean it, and I never thought of you that way. Obviously ignorant of the 2nd Amendment, yes, weasel, no.

2) Whereas I detest ignorance, particularly on a subject such as the exceedingly simple text of the 2nd Amendment, I also know that a lot of people are ignorant of its implications and meaning. “Ignorant” does NOT mean “Bad People”, it means “somebody with a false idea (or no idea) of the actual facts. When faced with ignorance, you seek to educate. If the education works, the problem becomes a non-problem. There’s no point in education if you don’t change your perception of the student’s knowledge when he learns.

3) My first thought when I saw your initial comments were “I want a retraction and an apology.” I got one. Now it behooves me to accept it, or I’d be an enormous prick for asking for one in the first place.

4) You’re a shooter. A shooter who didn’t know what he was talking about, but a shooter nonetheless. You know now. Good. Welcome back.

5) If your apology is good enough for the Nuge, it’s good enough for me.

Remember, fellow riflemen: Our job is to educate, not to alienate. Our job is to bring more people into the camp, NOT to wall off the compound and enjoy our little exclusive club. Hunters, target shooters, competition shooters, self-defense shooters, we’re all in the same boat and we need to hang together or we shall surely hang separately. And we need more, not less of us.

Thanks, Mr Zumbo.

Apology accepted.

Now lemme’ see if I get this straight. He is not threatening hunters, huh? How utterly convenient. Now I don’t hunt nowadays but I do enjoy fishing. Well, an attack trained deer didn’t rape my youngest sister, or burgle my inlaws house…twice. Nor did they steal my tool box, or bust my windshield. Got new for this idiot. My two .45’s aren’t to hunt, even though in a pinch one could. A friend was attacked and injured by a big boar he shot with an aught six. His .45 saved his life and took the boars. And for the record, the meat was donated to a homeless shelter here. I do enjoy target shooting, with practice I am becoming proficient. I fully intend to be a lethal adversary for any home invander………for I would walk through hell with a gas can for my wife….or my daughter…….

I to do am doubtful of his motives in this. But, like you, Boss, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. For now. We’ll see if he can sustain his revelations. I hope he does.

Amen friend Guido, Misha is correct, we need to hang together. For in truth, there remain for too many of us for any government to disarm, if we stand as one.

And as for recruiting, Misha, my beloved Other Half is now one of us, along with my boss at work. Both proud gun owners, target shooting a stress relieving pleasure. I’m working on a third, and a fourth, etc.

You’re a good, kind man, Emperor.

I’m not so generous, though. Here’s my contribution to apologist Jim Petzal’s site (via Kim):

I own a 200-acre farmstead that has belonged to my family for nearly sixty years. It fairly teems with game and, unlike some of my neighbors, hunters still find themselves welcome here.

I own “black rifles” and I apologize to no one for their appearance. The last coyote I shot, not a month ago, fell to a Bushmaster Varminter. (That’s a .223, for those still living in a “vacuum.”)

Here’s the deal: Respect my right to own, shoot and hunt with the firearms of my choice or the “No Hunting” signs go up.

    Clear?

Apparently some of the “hunting elite” out there still think they can toss us over the side with impunity to appease the wolves while they keep their recreation. (Petzal thought so in ‘94.) So, here we sit, staring down the bore of another ban on scary looking guns while Elmer Fudd Zumbo rushes to the plate to pinch hit for the Bradys.

Anyone who makes their living with words should have the sense to exercise the caution and judgment of a surgeon when they set pen to paper for their audience. Zumbo didn’t make a “mistake” in my view, nor was he, with his touted decades of experience, pardonably ignorant. He was willfully malicious at a time when we can ill-afford “experts” who spout such damnable tripe.

Zumbo got a 42-year ride from his writings. He had a loyal audience, corporate sponsorship, respect and celebrity. Apparently he thought this excused him from deliberately sending a late Valentine’s present to the exact people who most detest our fundamental liberties.

Now, like an incompetent surgeon who botches the case but tries to make it look good with a neat skin closure, he says he’s sorry.

    No sale.

Hunters be aware: You are and will always be welcome on my land for as long as I have a say in the matter. But that offer ends the instant you question my right to own and hunt with a firearm you don’t find fashionable.

Apologies are great, words are great. Actions matter. Apology accepted, but I won’t forget. If Zumbo gets out and there and ACTIVELY supports the true meaning of the 2nd then I will know his apology was sincere. If he slips again then I will know it was BS.

I agree that we need to hang together and can’t afford to alienate allies in the fight. But how far does that go? Does that mean we forgive McCain for McCain/Feingold?

In all though I’m with you Misha, I also accept his apology. But fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…

Does that mean we forgive McCain for McCain/Feingold?

When he introduces the legislation to repeal McCain-Feingold, then gets it passed and signed, I’ll forgive him for McCain-Feingold.

For all the rest of the shit that he’s pulled over the years? Only when he has actively worked to undo it, and gets the job done.

Jim Zumbo made stupid comments, got hammered under for it, then apologized for them.

I am willing to accept the apology, with the proviso that he truly changes his ways.

When he gets out making comments that will counteract the recent stupidity he displayed, he will get my support. In the meantime, it looks like I’ll be buying ammo from Remington whenever I can…

I do so like it when a corporation keeps its head up and out like that. Even if their response may be purely profit driven, (I don’t know, I’m not the president of Remington), the fact that they are still saying “No Fucking Way” on this is encouraging.

Like I said, I’m skeptical too.

But I’ve always tried to live by the rule that anybody is entitled to one sincere apology and a shot at making up for their fuckups.

There ARE no second chances, however.

If he turns out to be a lying weasel, my initial anger will be like a mildly cocked eyebrow compared to my second reaction.

Yeah, gotta give the man credit for a straight out apology.

It doesn’t erase the stain of mistrust and he better be on his best behaviour if he wants to sell jack-shit with his name again…. But at least he didn’t try to sell us a bill of goods to go with his faux pas.

Funny thing is, I’m not much for hunting anyway, but I’m a firm believer in supporting ALL of the shooting sports, even the ones that seem way too cold, wet and uncomfortable for my taste :)
