We won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you should be surprised by PMSNBC grabbing the Jim Zumbo story and using it to illustrate how mean-spirited and heartless we black rifle-owning gun nuts are, in spite of the fact that PMSNBC probably wouldn’t have given Jim the time of day prior to his moronic remarks and subsequent downfall.

SEATTLE - Modern hunters rarely become more famous than Jim Zumbo. A mustachioed, barrel-chested outdoors entrepreneur who lives in a log cabin near Yellowstone National Park, he has spent much of his life writing for prominent outdoors magazines, delivering lectures across the country and starring in cable TV shows about big-game hunting in the West.

Nauseating, yes, but at least it’s refreshing to see a hunter portrayed in the MSM as something other than a sadistic, obsessive murdering deathbeast in relentless pursuit of Bambi’s mother.

Zumbo’s fame, however, has turned to black-bordered infamy within America’s gun culture — and his multimedia success has come undone. It all happened in the past week, after he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters, especially those gunning for prairie dogs.

“Excuse me, maybe I’m a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our hunting fraternity,” Zumbo wrote in his blog on the Outdoor Life Web site. The Feb. 16 posting has since been taken down.

Once he realized that he was speaking out of his derriere, into which his head had become inexplicably lodged, presumably while chasing a wild boar armed with a gold-plated, engraved, antique rifle worth a month’s salary. Zumbo, not the boar. Although that would truly be a sight worth beholding. The snobbery, however, isn’t what got him nailed to the wall. This was:

“As hunters, we don’t need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them. . . . I’ll go so far as to call them ‘terrorist’ rifles.”

And that’s when the fit hit the shan when we fanatical, unforgiving, mean-spirited “assault rifle” owners took offense at being lumped in with terrorists. Although, truth be told, at that point we’d rather be lumped in with them than with the likes of Jim Zumbo.

The reaction — from tens of thousands of owners of assault rifles across the country, from media and manufacturers rooted in the gun business, and from the National Rifle Association — has been swift, severe and unforgiving. Despite a profuse public apology and a vow to go hunting soon with an assault weapon, Zumbo’s career appears to be over.

Zumbo’s career was well and truly over before he found it in himself to apologize for comparing law-abiding citizens with different tastes in firearms than His Exalted Zumboite Self to terrorists. If he’d been half as quick to apologize for his stupidity as he was to liken yours truly, among others, to Ayman al-Zawahiri, the outcome might have been different.

The NRA on Thursday pointed to the collapse of Zumbo’s career as an example of what can happen to anyone, including a “fellow gun owner,” who challenges the right of Americans to own or hunt with assault-style firearms.

A lesson that other Fudd-wannabes and incumbent gasbags in Washington DC would do well to take to heart.

Some outdoors writers drew a different lesson from Zumbo’s horrible week.

“This shows the zealousness of gun owners to the point of actual foolishness,” said Pat Wray, a freelance outdoors writer in Corvallis, Ore., and author of “A Chukar Hunter’s Companion.”

Foolishness is calling me “terrorist” because I own a PTR 91, you Fuddite Fuckhead.

Wray said that what happened to Zumbo is a case study in how the NRA has trained members to attack their perceived enemies without mercy.

“For so many years, Zumbo has been a voice for these people — for hunting and for guns — and they just turned on him in an instant,” Wray said. “He apologized all over himself, and it didn’t do any good.”

Wrong. It did him a world of good ONCE HE ACTUALLY APOLOGIZED, Elmer.

Even His Imperial Majesty forgave him when he did that, and you won’t find our picture under “forgiving” in Merriam-Webster’s. Now all he has to do is to prove that he actually meant it, but that’s entirely up to him.

Zumbo’s fall highlights a fundamental concern of the NRA and many champions of military-style firearms, according to people who follow the organization closely. They do not want American gun owners to make a distinction between assault weapons and traditional hunting guns such as shotguns and rifles.

Because there ISN’T any. They all produce a controlled explosion propelling projectiles from a barrel at high velocity. One would think that a hunter would understand at least that much and, fortunately, most every single hunter we’ve ever met does.

If they did, a rift could emerge between hunters, who tend to have the most money for political contributions to gun rights causes, and assault-weapon owners, who tend to have lots of passion but less cash.

Give us a break, will you? We realize that you’re preaching to your readership which, judging by the fact that you still have any, have the average IQ of kelp, but occasionally somebody with the intellectual capacity to boil eggs will wander by your pages, often for the same reason that we’ll go watch the monkeys in the zoo fling feces at each other. It amuses us in a strange, unsophisticated fashion.

The REASON we don’t want a rift, which is the exact same reason that some circles would like to CREATE one, is that once that happens, it’s Martin Niemoller time all over again: First, they came for the “assault rifles.” But I didn’t care, because I didn’t own one.

The gun-grabbing totalitarians in DC know good and well that they’re helpless against gun owners as a group, so they aim instead to divide and conquer with “sensible gun control legislation” which translates to “we’ll take THESE weapons, but you guys over there can keep YOURS if you’ll just sit down and shut up. (We’ll come for yours tomorrow).”

The NRA appeared to be saying as much in its statement Thursday, when it emphasized that the Zumbo affair shows there is “no chance” that a “divide and conquer propaganda strategy” could ever succeed.

Reading comprehension never was the strong suit of the graduates from J-school, was it? Is it even on the curriculum?

Hopefully Mr Zumbo was sincere in his apology and has learned from his ordeal.

And if we’re really lucky, the Pricks of the Potomac learned something as well. If not, we suppose we’ll have to arrange remedial classes for them at some point in the future.

Thatisall.

I propose a verb: To Zumbo (v)- To publicly chastise a moron to the point of rectal bleeding.

usage: “he got so Zumboed last night he’s still walking funny”

What has been demonstrated by the “Zumbo Incident” is the power “Al Gores Internet”.

This the finest example of a true and righteous “grass roots” effort.

There was no coordination from anywhere, it happend because we, the little people cared enough to put our fingers to the keyboard. (Zumbo got whacked from his corp. gigs before the NRA even made a statement!)

Zumbo couldn’t have been “Zumboed” in years past, the “tubes” made all the difference.

Like minded people can accomplish a lot when they are motivated.

Keep up the good work, take a kid shooting and explain the meaning of the 2nd to him, God knows his textbook won’t.

Keep your action clean and your powder dry.

Unfortunately Mr Zumbo still has not learned.

Mr Zumbo is a hunter, one who uses firearms to bag his prey. If he used clubs instead of firearms, it is likely he would be anti-gun. Since he uses firearms, he is pro (hunting) guns. He views all firearms through the “is it good to hunt with” prism.
His “apology” on Ted Nugent’s blog accentuates this. He laments that he was “out of touch with the hunting and shooting” community, then goes on to say he had no idea so many people hunted with “black” rifles. He can’t separate hunting from shooting.
Until he can, his apology won’t mean squat.

Well maybe PMSNBC had a change of heart regarding the Zumbo story: Page not found - Our web servers cannot find the page or file you asked for. The link you followed may be broken or expired.… :mrgreen_wp:

I also got the following after attempting a search: “Your query - “Jim Zumbo” - did not match any documents“… :razz_wp:

Well Zumbo’s site is back up but still nowhere on it that I could find was there anything about Zumbo’s comments or mea culpas regarding the use of so called, “assault rifles” for hunting…

I should’ve known that the Zumbo story was originally from the WaPo… I found a reprint of the story in the Fort Worth Star*Telegram…

Zumbo’s fame, however, has turned to black-bordered infamy within America’s gun culture — and his multimedia success has come undone. It all happened in the past week after he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters, especially those gunning for prairie dogs.

    Gosh! Well that’s a damned shame!… :lol_wp:

Well now, that’s one hell of a leap of logic! So according to the fool who penned this drivel, “BLAINE HARDEN” (he used to work for the New York Times also) the only folks that bitched about Zumbo’s rant are those insideous gun owners that want to go out and hunt using the, “spray & pray” method of bringing down game?!?!

    What a LIBTARD!

Pat Wray, the Corvallis chukar-stalker, is a member of AHSA … a brady-ite shill organization posing as hunters. He has at least one anti-NRA rant on their website.

He went over to them after the NRA gored his pet ox … his support for Clinton’s “roadless” area expansions in Oregon.

He felt it was important to keep blue-collar folks in pickup trucks out of his favorite guided hunt areas on public land … after spending $20,000 on a shotgun, and $2000 on a packed in guided hunt, having to deal with some yahoo in a pickup truck with an SKS is just too far beyond the pale.

I think the guy at the gun store where I bought a gun on Saturday reads this site, or maybe Kim du Toit’s.

I bought a used, customized Winchester 94AE in 30-30 with a black, plastic stock. As I was filling out the paperwork he said, “And you realize since this gun is black, it’s an assault rifle?”
It took me a minute to reaize he was joking, I thought I had missed some part of some GFW law (fabulously rare in VA).
That’s funny. Especially since the tube magazine only takes 4 of the large 30-30 rounds.

No kidding, Kristopher, as it is now, there’s enough berms blocking roads in the Oregon woods to bury 100,000 Rachel Corries. Look out for Ron Wyden, though. He’s on a mission to close ‘em all.

Fuck him! I enjoy target shooting with my pistol. I do not hunt with it. So semiautos are not cool in his mind, is that it? What about my lever action, or the slide on the pump twelve? Let his career and his credibility go right down the shitter, where they belong. It is not for him, or for that matter anyone, to decide what another may shoot, as long as they do not endanger others, being responsible shooters.
