How many times do we point out that climate is cyclical? It has changed in the past and will change again in the future. The Gorebots dismiss the increase in solar activity as irrelevant. Really now????????? One volcano, one, cranks out more greenhouse gas than all of humanity in a given time period. Sure, climate change exists, but seeking to have it automatically vindicate the Gorebots and their agenda falls flat. Loved watching this, now to send it on to a scientifically erudite engineer of long acquantance who believes man nade global warming is bullshit. And as an afterthought….why is it the lefties sanction excusing China from Kyoto? They are now the filthiest country on the planet. America isn’t even close. Ask the shuttle astronauts…..
Oh yes, the left will present links, as always, but fail to note that per person or ranked as productivity versus pollution, we are among the cleanest. And getting cleaner…….. Oddly enough, as more domestic manufacturing jobs move overseas to places like China…among them auto manufacturing, the sudden silence of the left speaks volumes. First the ozoen hole, now this….they will always have something…now to get Gore to clean up his private jet………I’ll take care of my economy car. I do have one for commuting. But my truck and my turbocharged PT Cruiser are another matter……and don’t even think of trying to take either one.

Gives a whole new meaning to a big mac attack…….of course we could do like the Hindus and simply let them shit everywhere. Vulcanism has increased in the last few decades, as has solar activity. Research now being conducted regarding the solar corona now indicating it may prove relevant. Of course we are somehow more relevant than the sun, notwithstanding it converts six hundred million tons of hydrogen to helium every second, a solar output of some two hundred billion megatons per second. Yes, I know, one two billionth of it reaches the earth. Enough on the crap, I froze my ass off last January, roasted like a pig last July……..I just don’t need this shit right now. Gonna’ look up some figures then off to bed.

For a science documentary, that hour plus went by fast.

The things that jusmped out to me where:

Water vapor is a bigger factor in trapping heat than CO2, but the environuts are promoting hydrogen fuel cells, whose only by-product (if you don’t count the vast amount of energy used to make the hydrogen) is water vapor.

Using more than double the amount of CO2 in the computer models for future climate prediction. This reminds me of the big saccharine scare in the 60,s. My Dad (he’s an engineer, not a chemist)who read up on it decided we couldn’t drink the amount of cola in sixty lifetimes to get even close to the amounts they were using to get a spot of cancer on a rat. He went to the local bottling plant and bought as much coke as he could fit in the car.

My Dad doesn’t drink cokes, so maybe he was trying to get rid of us, but it didn’t work. 40 years later, I’m alive, my brothers alive, and Mom’s still kicking at 84 with no cancer. And saccharine legal again, turns out the studies weren’t all that dependable.

I wonder if the Environuts are going to feel bad about wasting 4 BILLION DOLLARS in the U.S. alone per year that could have gone to the poor to actually help them….I doubt it.

The saddest part was the last 5 minutes where they cover the deprivation forced on the undeveloped with the idea that living in a primitive lifestyle without the benefits of industrialization is noble. It may seem that way to a person who doesn’t have to live it every day, but just visits it like Disneyland for 2 weeks or a month and then goes back to their Prius and hitting PayPal to buy their “carbon offsets”.

    F.E.T.E.

Like the use of saccharine I mentioned above, we used to much because it was inexpensive and more is better…we could have cut down on the amount being used and had the same bug killing results, but like most things, it’s all or nothing.

    Get some President Vaclav Klaus!

“Environmentalism should belong in the social sciences,” much like the idea of communism or other “-isms” such as feminism, Klaus said, adding that “environmentalism is a religion” that seeks to reorganize the world order as well as social behavior and value systems worldwide.

As for government spending on global warming studies, the former finance minister and of the Eastern European nation and trained economist said that such efforts were a “waste of money,” adding that there was already sufficient scientific evidence for those seeking policy change to back up their proposals.

Excellent documentary, unfortunately, I think 98% of the acolytes of Goracle will automatically go into fetal denial posture after the first segment on solar correlation to the earth’s climate. These models work by combining satellite measurements of chemical concentrations and meteorological fields with chemical reaction rate constants obtained in lab experiments. They are able to identify not only the key chemical reactions but also the transport processes which bring CFC photolysis products into contact with ozone. […]

A leftist tactic I always seem to forget about: Pre-emptively blame others for what you are guilty of. Remember the whole “politics of personal destruction” accusation levied by Bubba and the Shrilldebeast. Now the lefties blame the financial interests of “big oil” for global warming, when it is the lefties who have a financial interest in maintaining this scam. Also, it seems they would more likely go after “big coal” since alternative energy is technologically closer to replacing coal than oil. But, I guess most of the morons have been conditioned to hate big oil already so it’s just easier. Anyway, thanks for the link. You could theoretically make a low-yield reactor to replace every gas station in the country and move to all-electric (assuming you can find a way to charge a battery to 200-300 mile range in 15 minutes). That tech is close.

Fuck! Nothing flips my Bruce Banner/Hulk switch faster than supposed “scientists” who fuck with data to support their theory. That is exactly backward! You get the data, then make a theory. You then change the theory to fit new facts, or scrap it entirely if the theory’s compatibility with reality falls too low.

Never, never, do you make a theory first, then pick facts, or just make them up, to support it.

    MegaTroopX-

    moving forward on the PBMR?!

We, as in the U.S. DOE played around with pebble-beds for quite a few years. The system was very similar to the one currently under development and could be refueled online as well. Of course, like all things nuclear, private industry let it wither on the vine as no one was willing to take on the siting/licensing nightmare as it currently exists in the U.S. A utility can invest hundreds of millions with NO assurance that a construction or operation license will ever be issued. (See Shoreham). Westinghouse has an advanced passive safeguards, PWR design that’s been on the books for over 20 years. It’s also modular and efforts continue to get a “factory certification” license to streamline the current process. A utility can build a large base-load station by essentially locating multiple small APWRs onsite, but the site licensing issues remain.

Maybe we should take up a collection for the GrouchMeister’s enema supply. He does seem rather constipated the last week or so.

Look, I’m no fan of enviro-weenies, but I have to come to Rachel’s defense - especially as she’s been dead for 43 years. Unlike the GoreBot, she was an actual scientist writing within her area of expertise. If you actually *read* Silent Spring, you would notice she did not call for a complete ban on DDT, simply an avoidance of excess. It’s the wackos and idiots following in her footsteps who have taken reasonable caution to an unreasonable extreme. Granted, some of her evidence was not of the highest quality, but most of the strongest contrary evidence was produced after her death.

Let’s exercise some caution in berating the dead, OK?

I have to come to Rachel’s defense - especially as she’s been dead for 43 years.

Being a scientist does not imply truth of conjecture (see also: “man made global warming”). The hysteria “science” of her book has resulted in the deaths of millions of people. Being long deceased does not absolve oneself of such horrors.

Well, it’s a good thing you call yourself ‘Perpetual Student’ because you appear to need some help with your reading comprehension. Have you actually read the book in question? I doubt it. Did you note, or understand, the distinction between what she ACTUALLY WROTE, versus what OTHER PEOPLE did with it after her death? It appears not.

All the time we hear complaints (and rightly so) about efforts to re-write and distort the legacy of, say, Ronald Reagan. The same restraint should be exercised in evaluating those one might not idolize quite as much, especially if they are not around to defend themselves. I’m not paid to be your teacher, Mr. Student. Either learn or be ignored.

    DukeFenton:

Well, it’s a good thing you call yourself ‘Perpetual Student’ because you appear to need some help with your reading comprehension.

From your comment, I gleaned the following implications:

    • We should respect her as she was a scientist
with which I disagreed. A scientist is just as vulnerable to personal bias as power-hungry ex-vice-presidents as evidenced by those scientists who continue to purport that anthropogenic global warming is an undeniable fact. The scientific method is only as wonderful as the input data; when said input is cooked or artificially restricted for ideological purposes the results are worthless. Should policy be based upon such results, they become dangerous.
    • We should respect her as she wasn’t proven wrong until much later
with which I vehomently disagree despite your reiteration. I’m not grasping the relevancy, here. That the damage justified by her false conclusions has already been wreaked, so she should be exonerated for publishing said falsities?
    • We should respect her as she is deceased
with which I disagreed. Her culpability in the wanton deaths of millions overrules any respect due by her passing.

You’re correct that I have not read Silent Spring in its entirety, but I do know that her conclusions were false–just as I didn’t have to watch all of Fahrenheit 9/11 to know that it’s bullshit. You have admitted (twice) that her findings are false. Policy resulting in mass death was justified by citing her faulty research. She is culpable and is, therefore, worthy of scorn.

The core of your argument is that she wasn’t in favor of a total ban of DDT but, rather, a restriction of its application. What you maliciously impart as a reading comprehension incapability was my deliberate decision to refrain from commenting upon that precisely because I have not read Silent Spring in its entirety. I was, instead, arguing against the implications above.

On the other hand, those scientists pushing the anthropogenic global warming nonsense aren’t arguing for a total ban of carbon dioxide emissions but, rather, a reduction of said emissions. Policy justified by such false findings will result in further death. I shan’t be absolving any of those scientists for their roles in this matter, either–no matter how long it will take for the public at large to accept that MMGW is a scam.

    Either learn or be ignored.

This’ll be it for me concerning this issue. I’d say that we could politely agree to disagree but you’d much rather be a snide dickface, so bite me.

    # Comment by Perpetual (Duncecap) Student

From your comment, I gleaned the following implications:

Further evidence of your lack of comprehension. Do not look for ‘implications’ - look for plain statements or conclusions reasonably supported by objective data. If you don’t understand the difference, you’re not worth paying attention to, and no better than Mr. Gore.

    * We should respect her as she was a scientist

In the sense, and to the extent, that she actually understood the topic material. In the sense, and to the extent, that she understood the link between observation and reasonable conclusion (even if either is imperfect). In the sense, and to the extent, that she understood - *AND STATED*, which you refuse to acknowledge - that any response must be measured and subject to revision. As a scientist, she understood these things. As a scientist, I understand these things. Not being a scientist, you clearly do not.

Should policy be based upon such results, they become dangerous.

So by your logic policy should be based upon a total rejection of science, on the off chance that it might be tainted by human error? Sounds like Pisslam to me.

    * We should respect her as she wasn’t proven wrong until much later

Strawman. I neither said nor implied any such thing. This is your second major error - an insistence on everything being absolute right/wrong, good/bad, evil/good, smart/stupid, etc. This is further proof thgat you are no scientist, and have little if any appreciation of any form of heuristics. I do not know your political leanings, but intellectually you are closer to Gore and Cullen than you realize.

Nonetheless it is intellectually dishonest, malicious, and self-defeating to berate the departed - or anyone for that matter - for errors or shortcomings which are the product of limited information of the time. Nor, by the same token, is it valid to pass judgment for the use (or misuse) made of people’s work after its publication, and particularly after said person is no longer around to contest it. Whether you know it or not, you are using *EXACTLY* the same ‘logic’ as the ‘Bush lied about WMD’ crowd.

Were we to follow your ‘logic’ to its reasonable conclusion, we ought to dig up Darwin too and hang his bones for the eugenics crimes of the Third Reich. Were we to follow your ‘logic’ to its reasonable conclusion, several founding fathers should be dug up and hung for perpetuating the institution of slavery.

The number of great writers whose works contain errors or limitations is - well, pretty much all of them. Newton, Aristotle, Freud, even Einstein - which of them, O Student Who Is Better Than His Teachers - should we condemn to oblivion for its flaws?

I’m not grasping the relevancy, here.

    That much is obvious.

That the damage justified by her false conclusions has already been wreaked, so she should be exonerated for publishing said falsities?

Tell me, O Student Who Is Better Than His Teachers - what of Aristotle’s falsehood that women have fewer teeth than men? Shall we therefore ignore his contributions to the concept of empirical observation, the very cornerstone of modern scientific philosophy?

(You *DO* know that ’science’ is a branch of applied philosophy, I hope…)

Obviously you do not know the difference between an imperfect evaluation and an outright lie - and more importantly you wish to remain ignorant on that distinction - so I won’t even try to explain it to your oh-so-superior intellect.

Incidentally, the past tense of ‘wreak’ is ‘wrought.’

    * We should respect her as she is deceased

Not exactly. My exact words were, “Let’s exercise some caution in berating the dead, OK?”

But then again, you don’t understand the difference between “Let’s exercise some caution in spraying toxic chemicals all over the place” and “let’s stop using all insecticides everywhere because I WANT millions of people to die in horrible agony, BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!”

Sort of like some people don’t understand the difference between “science is imperfect because people are imperfect” and “science is a crock of shit that never told us anything of value.” (Hint: You evidence closer alliance to the latter.)

Her culpability in the wanton deaths of millions overrules any respect due by her passing.

Which you conclude based on the following…

You’re correct that I have not read Silent Spring

So you admit to not having the faintest clue what the fuck you’re talking about. Game, set, match.

but I do know that her conclusions were false

You ‘know’ no such thing. You admit you haven’t even read it. You clearly have no concept of what science involves, how it works, or WHAT SHE CONCLUDED. And you’re still hidebound by your absolutist mentality. Kind of like Gore, really.

You have admitted (twice) that her findings are false.

There you go with both your absolutism and a strawman (a twofer!) I said no such thing. I said contrary evidence exists. Once again, I won’t bother trying to explain the difference to someone who is clearly either unable or unwilling to comprehend it.

Clue time, asshole: DDT *does* cause major problems in certain species even at low concentration, and in sufficient quantity is deadly to ANY living creature (that includes you, monkey boy). Used *judiciously* it does not cause significant problems. But then again, you’ve clearly proven an inability (or more likely an unwillingness) to comprehend the difference between ‘reasonable restraint’ and an ‘absolute ban’ - much like most gun control advocates.

Policy resulting in mass death was justified by citing her faulty research.

That’s a stretch. I take it you’re unaware what Einstein said about what was done with his ‘faulty’ research. (Yes, it’s flawed, as was Newton’s. I won’t bother you with the details since you’re incapable of understanding degrees of error.)

The core of your argument is that she wasn’t in favor of a total ban of DDT but, rather, a restriction of its application.

Yes. It’s called ‘reasonable restraint.’ Sort of like birth control pills used to contain about 100 times the hormone they do now. Over time it was found that smaller quantities of more refined hormone work just as well with far fewer side effects.

Similarly, the amount of radiation in X-rays today is about half what it was in 1940; if you use CCD technology it’s about 1/10th. Radiotherapy can now pinpoint a pea-size tumor in the center of your skull (well, maybe not *YOUR* skull which is apparently tinfoil-lined), frying the cancer without touching the surrounding tissue. We have learned to use the same technology more judiciously, and do more with less.

You’re more in the camp of Dr. Pauling, who determined (correctly) that Vitamin C supports immune response; but concluded (incorrectly) that if a little was good a lot was better. He took 50g a day, giving himself a permanent case of the shits, and died of cancer anyway.

In the same vein judicious use of targeted spraying, combined with other control methods, is not only environmentally viable but more effective than any one method used at any level. (Hint: That’s how they wiped out malaria in the US.) But if ‘judicious restraint’ is too much for you, I suspect ’synergy’ would fry your two remaining neurons.

What you maliciously impart as a reading comprehension incapability was my deliberate decision to refrain from commenting upon that precisely because I have not read Silent Spring in its entirety.

You’ve made some pretty definitive claims about a work which you admit not to have read.

I was, instead, arguing against the implications above.

Which exist primarily in your imagination powered by pre-conceived dogma and an inability to comprehend the subject material.

On the other hand, those scientists pushing the anthropogenic global warming nonsense aren’t arguing for a total ban of carbon dioxide emissions but, rather, a reduction of said emissions.

Which is, within *reasonable* limits, a fairly bland suggestion. Just because there’s no solid evidence that ‘emissions’ warm the globe or cause other major damage; it does not stand to reason that we should just burn off whatever we please willy-nilly and totally ignore the topic. (Hint: There may be more than one reason to do something.)

The problems with the AGW crowd are:
    1) the clear flaws in the conclusions based on data available NOW;
    2) the extremism of their recommended solutions;
    3) the intent to impose solutions by force; and
    4) the clear element of self-interest in much of the hulaballoo.

Once again, though, I wouldn’t expect a close-minded absolutist to understand the distinction.

Policy justified by such false findings will result in further death.

“WILL?” Now who’s jumping to hysterical conclusions without sufficient supporting data? Oh, that’s right, you’ve exempted yourself from such petty concerns. (I hope you bought some ‘reason offsets’ from a scientist somewhere.)

I shan’t be absolving any of those scientists for their roles in this matter,

I didn’t know God had died and left you as sole judge and arbiter of the world. (Misha - you’re still hearing from the Big Guy, right? Thought so.)

no matter how long it will take for the public at large to accept that MMGW is a scam.

AGW is a hypothesis which doesn’t hold up to rational review of the available data. What’s being *done* with it is a scam. Again, I don’t expect you to appreciate, much less respect, the distinction.

This’ll be it for me concerning this issue.

Thank God. I really hate grading essays that bad.

you’d much rather be a snide dickface

And your insistence - O “Student” - on speaking down to those who are older, smarter, better educated, and better informed than yourself; who have actually read what you admit you have not; is…what, exactly?

    Your Grade: F, for fatuous

    so bite me.

    No thanks, I’m on a dipshit-free diet.

Not to be rude sir, but that’s exactly how “Christian Science” and “Creation Science” work. Yes, and Paleoswinian “history.”

Which is exactly why I consider all of the above to be what an esteemed instructor of mine called “bovine scatterings”.
