My sister went to Paris and said it was indeed beautiful. While she found it really filthy, she still preferred it to Rome. She found the Italian countryside much prettier than the french, so the next time I’m in the EU, I’ll skip france and go to Italy. I’ll be going to St Petersburg Russia next summer, I hear it’s beautiful too.
Last time I was in the EU was Dublin for St Patricks day 2005. They had a rally to “free palestine and iraq”, but there was about 10 hippies in the protest and the rest of the city was partying. Despite not being of any use to the world at large since WW2, the Irish are still pretty cool.
Since the Euro became the currency there, everything EASILY tripled in price, so it’s not worth it to stay in cities there anymore. Why must a B&B be $200 a night?

Ok, I know this is flamebait, but I’ll bite. I don’t think we’re obsessed with the french, it’s just that the french can always be counted on to confront and disagree with all things American, and they never miss an opportunity to do so - regardless if it’s warranted.
Forget the fact they owe the U.S. a serious debt of gratitude for WW2, this sadly isn’t really that relevant in this day and age. American tourists in Paris, and I’m talking the ones who DON’T mention WW2 while there, are treated like shit - despite their tax dollars having gone to almost completely rebuild the entire city.
I think the french symbolize all that is wrong with modern global society. They’re collective cowards, yet they remain passive-aggressive. They speak about international laws being broken like they’ve followed it, they speak about global responsibility like they’ve contributed something. They help/serve no one but themselves.
They preach about U.S. aggression towards muslims, while their society rots from within from massive numbers of muslim immigrants.
They’re losing grip on their own identity, and even have stooped to the point that they don’t even dare police some of their own neighborhoods.

I think france is a country that symbolizes all the bad things that COULD happen to the U.S. if we let socialists and leftists run amok - so, maybe not an obsession per se, but a pretty good example of how NOT to behave politically, morally, militarily, ethically and domestically.

France has had a history of enabling the enemies of their allies, and dragging their feet to help friends in need. There’s the obvious collaboration period of 1940-1944, but look at DeGaulle pulling troops out of NATO in 1965, leaving the EU in a huff, stirring up the Quebecers with his “Vive Le Quebec” crud, etc…. His predecessor, Pompidou, announced that they would make sure to be a thorn in the side to the Americans. Sounds like a bunch of has beens made that they didn’t save their empire when they tried to beat the British in the 1700s and 1800s, and were even more miffed at the evil Americans saving their butts in 1917 and 1944. I’d say these idiots are jealous, they are bitter, and they are willing to align with any enemy of theirs despite ramifications. French politics have been screwed since the XYZ Affair and haven’t progressed much. And trolls, don’t you blame us, try the frickin French and their combative attitude. The last time they got combative, they got bitch slapped at Waterloo, and the Sedan. Do they wanna get hit worse? Methinks so.

Thing is, no one is more spoiled than the french in Canada. Every time they consider splitting, it’s funny watching them sulk about not having anything to sulk about.
They’re unabashed opportunists. There’s acting in your nation’s best interests, which is expected of course, and there’s the blatant, selfish french. I don’t think we’ve EVER seen character from that nation.

It is really very simple. The Empire views fwance with the same derision that fwance has for all things “l’americain”.

Considering we saved their ungrateful asses from “Le Bosch” in WWI and WWII, we as Americans have a right to expect betrer than having these unwashed weasels looking down their gallic noses at us. After observing this behavior all my life, I tend to believe that it is the direct result of the loss of real fwench men in the wars, leaving a nation in the hands of Jeromes and nancy-boys. Rwanda too? all I can say is; wow! just when you thought the Gauls couldn’t get anymore galling.

Maybe we make too much of them helping us with our Revolution, thinking that it was shared values that motivated them rather than just a desire to bite at the ankles of the Brits.

If we really had similar cultural values, then why did our revolution go so right and theirs go so wrong? They decapped their brightest during their post revolutionary Reign of Terror, then Napoleon marched their bravest into the mouth of the cannon in Russia. What was left proved easy pickings for the Germans a century later.

There is a base element of human nature, related to ego (the one thing the french never run out of) that resents having to accept help from another. All too often the resentment is projected outward toward the one providing the assistance. Obnoxious panhandlers and welfare recipients who hate “the system” come to mind, as does the french national character.

Anti-Americanism is the rock on which the EU is built and the glue that holds it together. Scince france aspires to lead this over-the-hill gang, they feel that they have to lead in stoking the flames of Yankophobia (see, I can make up words too.)

Anybody who has cracked a history book not written by Howard Zinn knows that france lecturing us about “warmongering” is like one of those drunk driving schools where the guy who wrecked three marriages and half a dozen cars gets to lecture you about your checkpoint DUI because his “experience” makes him an “expert”

“Forget the fact they owe the U.S. a serious debt of gratitude for WW2, this sadly isn’t really that relevant in this day and age. American tourists in Paris, and I’m talking the ones who DON’T mention WW2 while there, are treated like shit - despite their tax dollars having gone to almost completely rebuild the entire city.”

Actually, Paris didn’t need that much rebuilding in the wake of WWII, mainly because it was declared an open city by the fleeing government. The Germans didn’t have to change into their dress uniforms for the victory parade past the Arc d’Triomphe in 1940 because they didn’t have to fight their way into the city. (Kudos, by the way, to whatever brilliant commander of the NATO forces who sent a German armored cav unit to take part in the bi-centennial Bastile Day parade back in 1989. There were a lot of unhappy froggies watching German Armor roll down the Champs E. Again.)

And by the way, sire…isn’t that a little harsh on crickets? I’d have gone with cockroaches. Crickets at least can serve a useful purpose as fishbait. Come to think of it though, a fwenchman would probably make good stinkbait for catfish…

I’m not defending the French, but I am curious: did your sister make an attempt at speaking French while in Paris? When reading about Americans’ experiences in France as tourists, I’ve encountered the sentiment that Parisians tend to warm-up to those who try to communicate in French. Of course, I don’t know the extent to which that’d be mitigated should they find out that one doesn’t equate Booosh with Hitler.

Yup, being Canadian, both she and I speak french fluently (forced upon us by a frog-appeasing gov’t here in the socialist slum of what used to be a great nation.
She wasn’t treated poorly, but was only a tourist speaking classroom french. Travelling as a Canadian (and in no way do I think this is fair) has its perks. I am one of maybe a handful of Canadians who claims to be American when travelling. Since it’s my dream to one day be an American citizen, I claim to be one wherever I travel…unless they’re asking for my passport. I *detest* those annoying, arrogant assholes with their Canadian flags on their backpacks.
Canada was once a powerful, respectable nation that fought alongside US and British forces in WW2. We had an amazing Navy. My uncle was the first Canadian on the Normandy coast on D-Day. We used to stand for something here. I used to wave the Canadian flag with pride on Canada Day. Now, it’s become, well, San Francisco. We have a good Prime Minister (finally, the first good one since I was born), so I have my hopes…
I assume that claiming to be an American and speaking English, no matter how polite I was, would not fly well with the french. This is why I won’t go. If our neighbors to the south (who are our military defenders) aren’t good enough to visit that urine-soaked little-islamabad, then I must not be either. I wouldn’t expect them to accept my respect for Americans, because having character is not known to the french.

Anti-Americanism is the rock on which the EU is built and the glue that holds it together.

I know, it’s pathetic. Here in Canada, it’s not about being Canadian, it’s about not being American. We’re denying the very culture summarizes us - total hypocrisy. Wonder why I want to leave yet?

The french also blocked US efforts to send UN peacekeepers to Darfur in 2003.

Guess who holds the lease to Sudans block 5 oil fields?

You got it - france. (Total)

The french need the Sudanese to get rid of the pecky Christians in the south so that they may exploit their oil lease.
The Sudanese Arabs are more than willing to comply.

I honestly believe that france is the greatest evil in the world today.

Strangely though,, the rest of the west could learn a thing or two from france in regards to internal Islamism.

Ack. I had a brain fart and erroneously connected your statement about your sister visiting Paris (I can capitalize that, right?) with that of Americans being treated poorly there. I’ve been on a five-long-day C++ coding binge during my spring break and I’m about spent. :confused_ee:

Travelling as a Canadian (and in no way do I think this is fair) has its perks.

I’ve read in the past that Americans are treated better whilst gallivanting around Europe if they have maple leaves sewn to their backpacks. It’s a shame that little tip actually has credence. It’s also why I doubt I’ll ever visit Europe–that and the airport cavity searches.
Anyway, I deeply appreciate the sentiments you have expressed and sincerely wish you the best of luck in becoming an American citizen. I would recommend that you simply learn Spanish and sneak in from the South of our border, but you’ve probably heard that a hundred times already…

Words can’t describe the anger I feel.

Amen, Jerry….. during WW2 my dad got his ass blown out of a B-17. When he finally escaped the concentration camp he swears he walked halfway across France….nobody helped him, until he ran into an American unit.

I did go to fwance once. Wait wait don’t lynch me yet. Now granted at the time I was a teen but even then I had enough sense to realize that the “wonders” of france were pretty much only in the imagination of the idiots extolling them. Granted all I saw was Paris and I hear the countryside is much better but considering that Paris is a major tourist trap you’d think they’d actually bother to clean the dog crap off the sidewalks once in a while. I wasn’t impressed with much of anything, but especially I was turned off by how dirty the city was. And these weasels are on about OUR pollution problems?

LOL. Yes. I’ve watched the “Yutes” riots with great interest. (and glee)

Even on a good weekend an average of 98 cars are torched by “youths of North African desent”.
French culture is superior dontcha know. :D

I think the average frenchman is waking up to their multiculti nightmare, but the government still has its head firmly up their asses. (Sarkozy offers some hope, LePen would make Drancy look like a picnic :D)

I was speaking more of french law regarding those suspected of terrorism - being able to hold them for up to four years based on suspicion alone.

    Let Stinkystan rot.

Thus saith he who not only still doesn’t know how to use capital letters, but also must now use a spellchecker to keep from having his ass handed to him again.

you gotten me on my grammor-ishly!!

    Teh OUTRAGE !!!1!

BTW this as you put it, “self proclaimed terrorist” isn’t? What is he then? A Howard Dean clone?

    Just asking…

that was a nod to the fact that even he sez he is a terrorist. sorry to confuse…

And I don’t see any “whining”. Unless you call outrage concerning France’s supportting genocide in Africa “whining”, then so be it.

I hope I didn’t use too many big words for you.

nah, but i hope you dont think you actually used some big words there.
please tell me you dont….do you?

I just hope teh hundred6 and his “I’m younger, hipper, and edgier than you” text message white-boy ebonics can come back for another round, I just wouldn’t feel right claiming the title of LC until I blooded my cluebat on my first Troll. (But at least he didn’t capitalize france.)

i should mention i drink a lot of mountain dew, watch the daily show and have an ipod just to make sure i stay edgy. the text message white-boy ebonics is just the tip of the ice burg. word up.

I think france is a country that symbolizes all the bad things that COULD happen to the U.S. if we let socialists and leftists run amok - so, maybe not an obsession per se, but a pretty good example of how NOT to behave politically, morally, militarily, ethically and domestically.

okay…here we have some valid arguments about france that actually sound reasonable!! and you know what? i actually agree!! i dont like france that much myself, but at the same time i dont want to turn it into a glowing green glass parking and i think the beavis and butthead circle jerk conservatives have when ever someone mentions france is “like rosie odonnell whines about the treatment of self proclaimed terrorist. and by that i mean you look and sound stupid.”

    Teh OUTRAGE !!!1!

Why waste a nuke? Just send in the armor, and watch the white flags go up.

The only mistake we really made in WWII was not making them a vassal state. If they can’t defend themselves, then vassalage is their natural fate. we really don’t need a nuclear armed vassal of Dar-Al-Islam in europe …
