Okay, I was winding my way through YouTube this evening, tired of dealing with websites, radio shows, politics, traffic on the 5 and the 405 (especially the 405, Jaybear — what is it about that crap their tearing up at Totem Lake — but I digress…)

Anyways, I ran across one of my most favorite artists of all time (though the duo was just as good, if not better) — Paul Simon.

As most of you know, I was a disk jockey for almost twenty years, before I went on to working sound for a major grunge band in the late ’80s into the mid ’90s. As a disk jockey, I not only played thousands of different songs on the air (to the point of nauseum sometimes), I also had the opportunity to meet and interview many of the artists themselves.

I can vividly remember the four occasions I had to meet and talk to both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, and marveled over how talented these two individuals were.

So I thought i would share this video with you:

I happen to love Paul Simon’s music, especially with Garfunkle. In fact, I might even go buy a cd of their music since I see that I don’t own any.

Thanks for that, Misha. I haven’t dug out my Paul Simon albums in a long time (yes, that would be those black plastic things you put on this spinny thing and drop an arm with a needle on it. They were “groovy”. I still have a bunch of ‘em.)

That was one of my favorites from one of my favorite records of his. Pretty song. Same melody as a hymn I remember from boyhood “O Sacred Head” - just as pretty. Melody is something that has been sorely missing from popular music for a while now.

The thing that impressed me most about Paul, though, was his talent as a lyricist. He would often slip in unconventional ways to put things but somehow you knew excactly what he was talking about anyway.

Off to see what they have on Rhapsody now.

Cool video Dave, I was always a big fan of Paul Simon’s songs. He was one of the best songwriters ever in my opinion, cutting his teeth as a member of the Brill Building songwriting machine, along with Carole King. I still have my first vinyl copy of Bridge Over Troubled Water, it’s still as spotless as the day I bought it..being that I was a total asshole about taking care of my records.

One of Simons talents that is often overlooked is his guitar playing…if you listen to his guitar work on “Bridge” and on some of his solo albums you will be mightily impressed. His Graceland album is still one of my favorites, it’s just so good to listen to on a summer evening.

Thanks for the video Dave, I love it when we start talking music here….

    I’ve got a great plan then…

tear the whole damn thing down and just create four more lanes for our traffic. Fuck car pool lanes and all that. HOV lanes is a failed experiment gone horribly bad.

I see no reason why I have to sit in my single occupant car going nowhere, while someone with an infant in a car seat gets to scoot along in a mostly empty HOV lane — especially when it is in a construction area where they’ve severely bottlenecked the traffic.

It now takes me 1.50 hours to go from Bellevue to Lynnwood — a mere 20 miles. I hit that crap heading north from Portland smack-dab in the middle of the rush hour. (and why the hell do they still call it an ‘hour’? It seems like traffic is a nightmare from 6:00 AM until around 9:00 PM

As for Simon and Garfunkel….I guess I’ve grown away from their music. Used to like it, but now it just raises the hair on the back of my neck for some reason. Which is odd considering how much I like most all the music from that time period.

Takes me back to my high school days (danced many a slow dance to Bridge over Troubled Waters).

And Dave, it appears that even though we are on totally opposite sides of the ideological fence, we have something in common besides a love of Simon’s music. I too was a DJ (for only about 10 years though) before going into network video production and then later into Higher Ed media and IT management.

The DJ life was not generally for me as it pays squat. I always have to admire the veteran on-air jocks given that there was so little money in it. You had to really love it.

It wasn’t so much the politics Rotti’s, it was the sounds. College back in the mid sixties for me was an awakening and a struggle, same as for everyone else.

My oldest daughter was born in the midst of the Kent State riots. We lived in a converted WWII barracks in married student housing. Her first day home from the hospital I stayed up all night listening to her breath. I was so afraid she’d stop.

I learned to despise the new culture; but those times are oh so bittersweet. After putting 40 years distance between then and now I can still appreciate many of those sounds and the artists.

Down here the HOV lanes are only enforced during 7-9 am and 4-6 pm, during high rush hour times. It sucks when you know in areas like this that it is just not reasonable to carpool. I have tried to do this, but I often stay late to work and such and this just doesn’t work.

I am not sure about the HOV lanes in Atlanta, but I know that in some states they have minimum speed limits. I wonder if that was the case and that had something to do with it.

And Dave, it appears that even though we are on totally opposite sides of the ideological fence, we have something in common besides a love of Simon’s music.

I wrote this in response to JT’s posting at Liberaltopia this morning:

Life isn’t always about that which separates us — in fact, if you took politics out of the life equation, you would probably find you have a lot more in common with the people at the Rott.

Politics is a very tiny thing in most people’s life. Like assholes, we all have our opinions, and most of the time we tend to keep them to ourselves — except in forums like these in which expressing those opinions are a major component.

In our normal daily travels, transactions, and human experiences, we find a way to get along and function as a society. We aren’t shooting at each other in the grocery aisles, running each other down in the Walmart parking lot, or burning our neighbors out of their homes because we think they are of the “correct” political stripe.

Political discussions are intense in forums like these because by their very nature they are polarized. This is not reflective of the real world we spend most of our time in — and thank G-d. These forums are nothing more than a ’safety valve’ — a place to come and blow off steam.

We all have our differences, but when compared to what we all have in common, those differences are minuscule.

With the exception of a very few people I’ve run across here and at other sites — Left and Right — I haven’t met anyone who I wouldn’t invite over to my house for a BBQ, or just hang out with. We might not agree on some political things, but who cares? It’s all ideological crap to begin with, and frankly, without these differences in our lives, society would be boringly stagnant.

Some people get this. Others, are slow to realize. I have never been one of those “us and them” kinda people.

That’s one of the reasons I left Oly and moved to River City, aka Spokane.

    Hey Special E,

Although now in Atlanta, I did live in Spokane once. Great town. Dry, sunny, even nice snow from time to time. And several great universities including Whitworth and Gonzaga.

Politics is a very tiny thing in most people’s life.

This may be the case Dave and I appreciate your sentiments. It is true that we usually can get along, even if we don’t agree. The problem we here in the Rott have with Liberals is that there are more and more who do not WANT to get along.

Conservatives, and even more so Libertarians, just want to be left alone. We don’t want the government intruding in our lives. We don’t want do-gooders like Al Gore telling us not to do things that he, himself would not do. We don’t want Liberals politicizing the courts and criminalizing political disagreements. We don’t want Liberals to be undermining war efforts which result in the unnecessary loss of lives.

These are not “tiny” things to the soldiers who’s lives have been sacrificed in order for liberal politicians to score points. Or tiny to Scooter Libby, or tiny to the business owners who can’t stay in business because of onerous regulatory and tax policy. It’s not tiny to the family who can’t afford to send a child to private school where they won’t indoctrinate them with secular humanistic belief systems or show their children outright fascistic propaganda such as “An Inconvenient Truth”.

“Tiny” is a relative word. In the course of our daily lives politics may seem like something insignificant. That is, until you pay your taxes, send your kid to school, or try to get ahead in the world. Then, politics plays a major role.

Personally, I have nothing against you Dave, and it is my hope that you will continue to engage us in a good dialog. No disrespect to you but, but the truth is, honest liberals are hard to find these days, and one who is willing to intellectually engage is even harder to find. Sometimes I see there is some hope that you are willing to set aside the talking points and actually debate the issues on their merits. When that happens, and a healthy dialog ensues, I consider that a small victory for us all.

As to music … don’t listen to the message, just enjoy the music! Try to recall your younger, more naive days! Can’t stand John Lennon’s politics, but can you imagine a world without his songs? Can’t help it … some of the best artists are some of the biggest moonbats! Same applies to actors and directors ….

    Been to New Orleans lately?

Just kidding….well…at least about the burning down the neighbors house.. :wink_ee:

I’ll have to agree with you on this Dave. Take away the politics and we all have alot more in common than we think.

I tell you what, though, the next time I see some lazy-butt, unemployed, welfare recipient just leave his/her cart in the middle of the parking lot or next to my car, I just MIGHT run him/her over!

Hey Kwong….it’s ALWAYS road destruction season in King County. Did you know that they just spent $600,000 to replace the old king county logo with one that has Martin Luther King’s face on it?
    $600,000

to put a new PC logo on every county business card, vehicle, newsletter, brochure etc etc…

and they say they can’t find the money to keep schools open.

About the music: Since no one else has done it, I gotta point out that the main melody PS sings here is a ripoff of J. S. Bach’s churchly tune “O Sacred head Now Wounded” (a soft translation of the German lyrics IIRC), which the Old Wig–hey, the 21st was his 322nd birthday!–supposedly stole himself from an older secular song.

Sorry it took so long to get back…

The problem we here in the Rott have with Liberals is that there are more and more who do not WANT to get along.

There again, you are talking about a very small, almost insignificant number of the population.

Most people in this country do not frequent weblogs at all, let alone political ones. Heck most people look at politics as total boredom, and only want to even think about things the day before an election.

It’s only the political junkies like you and I who spend any energy at all talking about this stuff.

Sure, people might have a snap opinion on the topic du jour, but nothing really concrete. They get their news in 30 second sound bytes, and their opinion is formed without ever thinking about it.

For the most part, this country has the political makeup of a herd of cows. Substitute Republican and Democrat with Jersey and Holstine and that is what we get. The cows for the most part don’t really care.
