…we can only say that we hope that James Dobson of Focus on the Family is badly quoted out of context in this:

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson appeared to throw cold water on a possible presidential bid by former Sen. Fred Thompson while praising former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who is also weighing a presidential run, in a phone interview Tuesday.

“Everyone knows he’s conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for,” Dobson said of Thompson. “[But] I don’t think he’s a Christian; at least that’s my impression,” Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party’s conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

Not the first part. Mr Dobson is perfectly entitled to his opinion on Fred Thompson’s “Level of Christianitude”, although we’d like to know just how he knows, out of plain curiosity.

No, it’s the second part that we have to throw the bullshit flag on, and that’s coming from us, speaking as a Christian Fundamentalist of at least some standing.

We don’t care if Mr Thompson meets Mr Dobson’s personal criteria for “acceptable Christianity.” As long as he’s not hostile to our faith, i.e. as long as he agrees with a strict interpretation of the First Amendment on the issue (cretins who think, in their bong-addled dreams, that there is such as thing as a “wall of separation” mentioned in the Constitution need not apply. Go learn to read instead, you illiterate, blathering butt-bladders), it is of precious little importance just how much or how little Mr Thompson personally believes. That’s his business, not ours.

Of course, the only reason that the MSM even bother to pay attention to what Mr Dobson, otherwise a non-entity as far as their hedonistic arses are concerned, says is that they’re beginning to get scared that Thompson might run, and they will do anything to pre-emptively torpedo his potential candidacy. His popularity ratings in straw polls speak for themselves.

This is interesting to me, not because of what Dobson may think of Thompson, but that he would support Gingrich. I may be wrong, buy my impression of Gingrich is not one of a practicing Christian.

OK, first and foremost, I am a Christian. I normally support Dr. Dobson, and was cool with Pat Robertson’s off Chavez comments. But, this time he may be going too far. Some of these pious types said Reagan wasn’t a Christian, and he was.

However, Dr. Dobson, I am going to have to split paths with you. As only The Lord and Fred Thompson both know how Christian he is. I don’t always talk of my faith. I am not ashamed, but no one asks me. It’s called waiting for questions and the proper setting. Tact, in short.

Besides, I leave Bible beating to others more pious than I. My Bible is not large and hard enough to wack someone senseless with.

This will cause a rift with some, but tell you what, let it. The Christians like myself hold back opinion on Fred, because while we know he’s not perfect, no one is. Real Christians don’t bash someone who’s not so holy as thou. Nope.

We do take issue with Bill Clinton procclaiming Christianity before and after his Monica affairs. I take issue with John Kerry finding religion in election time, when he was excommunicated by the church. And I take issue with the Reverend Barry Lynn, RINO- Reverend in Name Only, who bashes Christians for not being as lukewarm as he is. Some of us take issue with parts of the Crusades, but really enjoyed the thrashing Saladin got early in the Second Crusade. Sue us, we’re human.

Fred, for what it’s worth, this Christian will pray for you and back you.

Jann, good call. Rudy is not described by many as a Christian, but who knows. Read his biography, the one he approved, and he talks of God and faith. After his prostate cancer fight, and 9/11 it is more on his mind than ever.

Echo on all points. That’s a matter for Fred and G_d, I have no reason or need to overly concern myself on Dobb’s personal ‘litmus test’ on any such matter either. He lost what little respect I had for him a long time ago. I’m still more or less benched from the keyboard for the last few, but I’m thrilled to see this movement starting. Fred is one I definitely can get behind without having to ‘hold my nose’ and I sure won’t have anyone “appealing” to my own shared fundamentalist Christianity’s assessment of a candidate.

you know, I get really put off when “religious leaders” start backing a politician. It makes it feel as if they are trying to push a candidate down the throat of their congregation. Now, while my Christian values do influence how I vote, I don’t need my pastor telling me who to vote for. (The MSM already does this and it doesn’t help their cause one bit.)

You know….sometimes I have to shake my head at those Christian leaders such as Dobson and Robertson. They are prime examples of those that let their amount of influence go to their heads. Yes it would be good to have a Conservative that was also a practicing Christian, but our past examples of Presidents and candidates that profess a relationship with G-d that proved in office that their faith was less than luke warm are many.
I would much rather he not campaign on his so called religious values that he most likely doesn’t have, and just stick to his political values. That’s what we elect a President for anyway. He’s not running for Pope for heaven’s sake.

Dobson and Robertson need to stop sticking their noses into the Political Arena. They keep muddying the waters that are muddy enough as it is.

At what point did snake-oil selling Pharisees become the leading lights of Christianity?

This lemming “community movement” within general Christianity is disturbing. The parallells to Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and “credibility” with the “black community” are inescapable.

Does the candidate support the same values as you? That’s what every person of every belief and political persuasion should be asking. How you and he arrived at the same (or different) opinions should be irrelevant.

Another good point. While pastors are certainly entitled to their political opinions like everybody else, I’d much prefer it if they’d shut up about it while they’re at the pulpit and stick to the subject of, I don’t know, Christianity, perhaps?

Well, take it from someone whose first church was headed up by a bunch of bleeding heart liberals, I don’t want to see politics at church.

You wouldn’t believe some of the, “social justice,” sermons that we had to suffer through, before we finally moved on.

On the other hand, to the extent that morals can not be separated from politics, there is a place for talking about the, “issues of the day,” in church.

In Dobson’s defense, he has never stated a preference for one political party or the other, nor has he been the, “in your face,” type of advocate that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are. Dobson does have some strong beliefs, and although I don’t agree with him on some of them, at least he is consistent, unlike the other two mentioned.

I’m not ready to throw him under the bus for these statements, though. Reading the rest of the story, I can understand where he’s coming from on this, although I don’t agree with him.

I love the idea of a Fred candidacy! I still remember SENATOR Thompson as a no-nonsense conservative. He has a tremendous ability to take what political opponents say and hang them with their own words. And in this day and age, with tiny sound bytes….that is important. In short, his intelligence and understanding of issues is CENTRAL to me - his credentials are solid.

I would support Guiliani enthusiastically if he got the nomination. At least I know where he stands. And on my MOST important issue, national defense, he wants to WIN.

Well, here’s what I like about right Christian leaders:

    1. They give all thanks to God, and own up to THEIR OWN mistakes.
    2. They say, vote your conscience, not your party. R’s and D’s are all welcome before God, as long as they don’t deny him or do worse…..
    3. They differentiate between the Word and will say IMHO, not the word, but IMHO when trying to be careful.
    4. They admit they are human and continue to tell the truth.

Yeah, good ministers are out there, just gotta find one. I think Dobson is a decent guy, no doubt he and the Lord talk, but that kind of judgement seems premature. I say, wait and see Dr. Dobson. Still back you on most things, this, I think you jumped to gun on.

Also, while I want Fred Thompson to run and clear the RINOs, the primaries haven’t started. And the real fun is gonna be seeing the Dems try to recover from tearing eachother apart. Notice the GOP is for once using some tact? Wait and see, they say. Wait and see who’s done ripping their colleagues apart, and while they’re still licking their wounds, pounce on them like a cougar on a frickin Hildebeast! Wildebeast, my bad for the Freudian slip….

Also, when did Protestant mean pussy? Or Catholic means contrite yesman? Or when did a Christian have to be a doormat? Never, I say. Don’t look for trouble, but when it comes, hit your knees, pray to god, and get your ammo ready.

Fred could be a Christian. Shoot, Reagan was a Christian, and he kept that to himself, not out of shame, but just because faith is a fairly private affair. And if you advertise it, expect the expectations of others to shift, ALOT.

Judge not, that ye not be judged! Sound familiar, Mr. Dobson? I care if Thompson’s a Christian, but politically, it’s more important that he doesn’t care whether I’m Christian or not. If he’ll mandate that the executive branch treat the 2nd Amendment as an individual right and disband ATF, I wouldn’t care if he was full on muslim–well, maybe I would, but hyperbole has its place.
