Somebody (I think we can all guess who) managed somehow to hack the site and put up a fake “suspension notice.”

Hosting Matters had NOTHING to do with it!

So please refrain from giving them Hell about it, because it’s not their fault. As a matter of fact, they’ve been nothing but exemplary throughout the years, having stood up for me several times. They’re the best, and they always have been, this time as well. Within minutes, they had the fake page down, they’d informed me and they’d initiated investigations to find the culprit.

I repeat:

Hosting Matters had NOTHING to do with it!

They’re good people, excellent people, and have been for as long as it has been my pleasure to do business with them.

As a matter of fact, having seen a sample of the undeserved vitriol flung in their direction, I do believe that an apology would be in order.

Oh, and they’re not “liberals”, nor have they ever cared about what political beliefs their customers have.

After the dust settles, any chance we can get some details on what “Ian” or whomever did and what was done to correct the situation?

It may be helpful for some of us in preventing similar problems in the future.

If it wasn’t Hosting Matters’ fault then stronger site password protection may be needed.

As a web host myself, we cannot be responsible for the lack of security when it comes to usernames and passwords. Like Hosting Matters, I allow my web clients to choose their own username and password, and they can access their space on the server using cPanel. Security is only as good as the people who have the username and password.

Or it could be that DJ talks in his sleep (do liberal IT guys dream of conservative blogs getting hacked?)

Like Hosting Matters, I allow my web clients to choose their own username and password, and they can access their space on the server using cPanel. Security is only as good as the people who have the username and password.

This was, indeed, my point. I once managed the IT for a division of 600 academics, staff, and grad students, 98% of whom were on Macs running OS X. Even though the OS is immune (after 7 years anyway) to virus, worm, and other malwear attack, and does provide suggestions for strong passwords, that doesn’t stop users from coming up with some of the most idiotic passwords for their machines (and a password is required under OS X). My staff could routinely crack faculty machines with some of the most basic freeware out there.

The favorite password, for some odd reason, was “froggy”. But we had people using their first name, the last 4 digits of their social security #, the number “1″ (another favorite), and so on.

Here is a suggestion for anyone who wants a super-strong, easy to remember password (requires a keyboard with a numpad or numlock key):

Pick a simple word like “RAVEN” and then trace out every other letter on the numpad and the alternating letter on the main keyboard (the letter R in this case would be 74123659)
So this password would be 74123659a14863e7415963

Surprisingly, it is very fast to type in and as long as you stick to words with easy-to-trace characters, you can do pretty well. You can do variations of this of course, with just the first and last letter traced out on the numpad, etc.

Hmm… I hadn’t ever seen that one in use, Beeblebrox. When I am seriously concerned with security, I use a system based on the names and numbers of friends. For example, Michelle’s phone number is 321-432-1234, (obviously I am making this information up, it’s the system that is important), I take Michelle’s anme and divide it along the input string in four groups, interspersed with the area code and phone number, using the shift key alternating on the numerical values. Thus, the passwrod becomes “MI#2!CH4#2EL!2#4LE”.

(This was a hell of a lot easier on the Hazeltine and the TRS-80 Mod. III, since the shift key changed the 10-key pad to values of the QWERTY, unlike a PC.)

Then, if you do need an aide de memoir all you have to write down is “Rott - Michelle Smith”.

You should know what it means, but anyone else will have to figure it out. And the only way that they would be able to even get to that point is to have whatever you have written down.

If you get really paranoid, use the phone number backwords, or prefix/area code/suffix, etc.

DJ, I thought about you today when I drove up to marysville…..

Then you drove right past my house, figuratively speaking.

The favorite password, for some odd reason, was “froggy”. But we had people using their first name, the last 4 digits of their social security #, the number “1″ (another favorite), and so on.

How many picked “password” as their password?

You can try as many hard-to-guess passwords as you want, but they are only as secure as the people you share them with.

This site, along with its cPanel server interface uses 128-bit encryption. While the password you type into your login screen might be a plain word, the system stores it in such a way that RAVEN might become something looking like this:

    b8c58914f27abaea76b24f674109588b

When someone emails me to tell me that they’ve forgotten their password, I cannot just go look and tell them what it is. I have to “re-set” it with a temporary and email it to that person with the instructions to change it as soon as they login.

But you make a good point that an alpha-numeric combination excluding your associated names and numbers is the way to go — as long as you don’t share your password with someone down the road.

Another thing — you should also be in the practice of using a nickname on this site. A lot of you use your Username as the name that appears in the posts. For example, MY username is not “DJ Allyn, ITW”

Random password generators on a website like this would take even the fastest computers in the world years to crack simply because of the turn-around time it would take due to the internet connection.
