[A short introductory note by your benevolent arse of an Emperor: As you may have noted, there’s a new byline on this post. It belongs to our very own Voice of the Pacific, LC & IB Brendan, who has been kind enough to offer his unique Australian point of view on this site from time to time, and we were more than eager to take him up on it. So, without further ado, please offer a big welcome to the Thunder from Down Under, Brendan:]

In a stunningly revealing interview, the female sailor some have dubbed Ms Headscarf, has detailed how she was brutally tortured by the Iranians.

“THE female British sailor captured and held by Iran has told how her captors stripped her to her panties, lied to her and threatened she might never see her baby again.”

Oh MY GOD, tell me they didn’t do THAT???

What was next, making you watch Iranian TV? That she was LIED to?? How terrible… You’re right,. that’s really cruel and unusual punishment, we must call the UN and tell them that it was all their fault.

Iranians lied, Turney cried….

Dear Lord, not the panties, please, it brings back memories of Abu Ghraib…oh wait, they didn’t put them on your head…yeah, that was MUCH less traumatic.

Silly me.

Compare this simpering, vacuous, sickly little weakling with what REAL warriors have suffered in the past, vets suffering physical trauma, beatings, isolation, sleep deprivation, starvation, truth drugs, brainwashing, freezing, cigarette burns….hundreds died in the hands of the enemy..yet they never bowed, never broke, even the ones confronted by Hanoi Jane Fonda refused to give an inch..yet all it took for this little wallflower to break, was to be told she “might never see her baby again”.

Compare her “stress” and “fear” to the shining courage and valour of Pte Johnson Beharry, newest recipient of the UK’s highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross.

You can damned well bank on the fact that faced with the same dilemma, Pte Beharry would have spat defiance in their faces.

Awww…did poor widdle Turney have her widdle feewings hurt???? Poow wittle wady….

Gentle LC’and G.L.O.R’s, please disregard that high pitched whine you are hearing….it’s just Winston Churchill reaching 3000 rpm.

Meanwhile, the youngest among the 15 Britons held captive by Iran has told another newspaper that he was “blindfolded, threatened, and left in solitary confinement for days by the Iranians, who dubbed him “Mr Bean”.

GAH

Not the “Bean” procedure…anything but that, please, I beg you, have mercy…

I can think of thousands of Korean War and Vietnam veterans who would take one look at this little wuss, and burst into tears at the pathetic state of a once great military force. Where are the jut-jawed, implacable, indomitable Tommies that kicked the Afrika Korps across the African desert?? Is THIS the pride of the British Navy..are these…people the inheritors of the harriers of the Graf Spee, the courageous heroes who defied the U Boat menace on the Murmansk run??

“At one stage … (the interrogator) asked me, ‘How do you feel about dying for your country’,” she told the tabloid.

I can tell you what any soldier or sailor with any GUTS would have said, you mewling little COWARD.

“As long as it’s with my hands around your scrawny little throat”

And at the end…this…this alone says it all

“He told me, ‘If you even survive this, what will you tell your family’.”

I’ll tell you what you can tell your family…what you will be telling everyone, for the rest of your miserable life.. that when called upon to stand straight and tall for your country, when duty demanded that you never give the enemy an inch….you buckled like a wet noodle and handed Iran a propaganda victory of catastrophic proportions, disgracing yourself and your uniform beyond any hope of redemption.

If you had an ounce of integrity in that yellow bellied, Fwench spirited body of yours, if you had one tiny shred of dignity left, you’d resign, hand in your uniform and spend the rest of your life atoning for your disgusting cowardice in the face of the enemy.

In the old days there was one, and only one, punishment for your craven deeds.

What will you tell your family? You can tell them this.

That when duty and country called, you did not hesitate.

You turned and ran like hell.

There are only sixteen (I think)living winners of the VC.Another article notes that the Private was seen by the Queen before a General..not that the officer minded, when asked, he said that it was an honour to have been there on the same day.

Great. I smell another “Mr. Bean” movie in the works. Mr. Bean travels to America and is captured by the far right-wing radical group, “The New Crusaders,” who for some reason resemble the cast from “Deliverance.” He is relentlessly tortured with bad British accents and tasteless tea jokes, until he manages to defeat the entire army through sheer dumb luck.

    Said Arthur Batchelor:

Arthur is now planning a wild night out with his best friend Kate Wills. I’m embarrassed to admit that drinking’s what we do best.”

Arthur i think grovelling and disgracing your country is your forte. Drinking will help assuage your guilt, if you have any sense of it, however.

In last week’s Mirror, Kate described Arthur as her “Tarzan”. But the modest sailor said: “I’m not quite king of the jungle. There are lots more braver people. We had a giggle about it. I suppose she’ll expect me to live up to the nickname now.”

and now my hero John Bolton opines:

Iran was deliberately probing for allied weaknesses and found them in abundance, Bolton wrote in a hard-hitting article in the Financial Times newspaper.

but the brits don’t see it that way:

Some commentators here have said the United States should learn a lesson from Britain’s handling of the detainees issue in respect to the standoff over Iran’s nuclear programme.

    so John responds:

But if the outcome of the stand-off with Iran was a success for British diplomacy, “one hesistates to ask what would constitute failure,” Bolton wrote in the business daily.

“Emboldened as Iran now is, and ironically for engagement advocates, it is even less likely there will be a negotiated solution to the nuclear weapons issue, not that there was ever much chance of one.

“Iran, sensing weakness, has every incentive to ratchet up its nuclear weapons programme, increase its support to Hamas, Hezbollah and others and perpetrate even more serious terrorism in Iraq.

“The world will be a more dangerous place as a result.

Most Brits I have been communicating with do not think anything is wrong with this whole exercise and cowardly sell-out….I think deep down in their bones they know they are finished as a race and people.

I distinctly remember a program on the Military Channel about the Royal Marines. What was especially saddening is the complaint that the senior officer made about the requirements being lowered to such an extent that they wouldn’t be an effective fighting force anymore.

    And third (and finally),
    - I wonder if they yet understand the effect of their demeanors while captive? I wonder if it will only slowly sink in after family and friends have stopped slapping them on the back, hugging them, happy to see them. It’s right that they should have been prayed for, and missed and that loved ones should welcome them back with open arms (who wouldn’t?).

It’s not right, however, the way they, who represented once-mighty Brittania, let her down so - abysmally.
    Completely.

From lower level to upper, Britain’s military flinched.
The ripples from that limp response will be felt for a long, loooonnnnnggg time….by countless others that by their inaction they’ve now placed in harm’s way.

If I may post in full the Speech given by Colonel Tim Collins to the battlegroup of 1st Battalion Royal Irish Regiment on 19th March 2003:

We go to liberate, not to conquer.
We will not fly our flags in their country
We are entering Iraq to free a people and the only flag which will be flown in that ancient land is their own.
    Show respect for them.

There are some who are alive at this moment who will not be alive shortly.
Those who do not wish to go on that journey, we will not send.
As for the others, I expect you to rock their world.
Wipe them out if that is what they choose.
But if you are ferocious in battle remember to be magnanimous in victory.

    Iraq is steeped in history.
It is the site of the Garden of Eden, of the Great Flood and the birthplace of Abraham.
    Tread lightly there.

You will see things that no man could pay to see
    – and you will have to go a long way to find a more decent, generous and upright people than the Iraqis.
You will be embarrassed by their hospitality even though they have nothing.

Don’t treat them as refugees for they are in their own country.
Their children will be poor, in years to come they will know that the light of liberation in their lives was brought by you.

If there are casualties of war then remember that when they woke up and got dressed in the morning they did not plan to die this day.
    Allow them dignity in death.
Bury them properly and mark their graves.

It is my foremost intention to bring every single one of you out alive.
But there may be people among us who will not see the end of this campaign.
We will put them in their sleeping bags and send them back.
There will be no time for sorrow.

The enemy should be in no doubt that we are his nemesis and that we are bringing about his rightful destruction.
There are many regional commanders who have stains on their souls and they are stoking the fires of hell for Saddam.
He and his forces will be destroyed by this coalition for what they have done.
As they die they will know their deeds have brought them to this place. Show them no pity.

It is a big step to take another human life.
It is not to be done lightly.
I know of men who have taken life needlessly in other conflicts.
I can assure you they live with the mark of Cain upon them.

If someone surrenders to you then remember they have that right in international law and ensure that one day they go home to their family.
The ones who wish to fight, well, we aim to please.

If you harm the regiment or its history by over-enthusiasm in killing or in cowardice, know it is your family who will suffer.
You will be shunned unless your conduct is of the highest — for your deeds will follow you down through history.
We will bring shame on neither our uniform or our nation.

It is not a question of if, it’s a question of when.
We know he has already devolved the decision to lower commanders, and that means he has already taken the decision himself.
If we survive the first strike we will survive the attack.

As for ourselves, let’s bring everyone home and leave Iraq a better place for us having been there.

    Our business now is North.

This lad would never have sold himself so cheaply and I daresay if they somehow had managed to capture him they’d have had his whole regiment to contend with ’cause those lads would have followed him to hell if he’d asked it of them.

Welcome Aboard Mate with a fine rant indeed. The whole miserable affair, beyond the external humility, will come back to haunt all western policy with Iran and the greater middle east.

The UK just established a new standard policy dealing with hostile foreign powers that surpasses even what the Useless Nincompoops might even see as somewhat limp, like the Brits bacon and pathetic weenies of their leaders.

    …mheh….

All I can say is that I hope…I desperately hope…that if I were in those soldiers shoes I would have quitted myself like a man. History is full of heroes who have refused to be cowed and used by their enemies. I have so often been inspired by these brave men and women.

Yet would I be counted among their number? I would hope so.
But like I tell my congregation, it is one thing to say that you would be a martyr for Jesus, and that you would neve deny his name, while sitting in an air-conditioned room among friends and like-minded believers. It is quite another to be starved, beaten, cold, hungry, and full of pain with the lives of your children on the line and a gun to your head. I daresay the same thing applies to a soldier who has been tortured, kept in the dark, starved, and faced with the possibility of public beheading.

But what can you say to people who were captured without a fight, kept in apparent comfort (if I may use that term), and willingly were made the propaganda tools of an enemy to Western peace? And what do you say to a culture where these same “soldiers” are accepted back with loving arms and made into quasi-heroes?

    Yellow, yellow bastards.

I am not impressed with the behavior of the 15, but then I wasn’t there. Take a look at this description of the stupidity of the Royal Navy in this case.

The Brits are not all wimps. There are some damned hard soldiers in her Majesty’s service. Take a look at Bravo Two Zero, by Andy McNab. These were cherry picked twinkies. The ragheads knew what they were doing before they ever grabbed these folks.

The unmentioned elephant in the room is that Turney is a mother and is getting plenty of sympathy. To many, her actions were totally understandable and forgivable. Very few women, and almost no mothers, could be expected to be stoic and courageous in captivity under threat of death with children at home.

The other unmentionable is that, if it is against our social mores to demand that mothers and women adhere to the highest standards of valor, women should not be soldiers. Let me say that again. Women should not be soldiers. Mothers should never, ever, ever be soldiers.

I know there are many who would take umbrage at the statement, but there is a code of behavior- yes, of that barbaric notion honor- that we demand from soldiers. If we, as a society, consider motherhood or womanhood a justification for cowardice, than mothers cannot be combat soldiers. Women cannot be combat soldiers

It’s a black and white question. But on principle, you must pick a side. Cruel but fair. Or compassionate but restrictive and old fashioned.

hitnrun…you just hate women. They can do anything that a man can do. Women are better than men. We are equal. Blah, blah, blah…

    Just Kidding.

I agree with you 100%, even though at the rate of girlie pansy ass men are becoming increasingly common, knowing I could have kicked their ass when I was 7, you are right. It creates a liability as well. And the bad asses that could make it should stay here to guard the fort.

Lord Nelson’s monument on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales.

The monument is made of stone, inscribed with the words “Nelson” and “Fell at Trafalgar 1805. England expects that every man will do his duty”.

Lord Nelson just wiped his arse with a pigeon and is dragging his monument down A55 looking for a boat to another country.

Excellent work, Brendan. You’ve more than earned your right to be a contributor to the Rott, and I for one am glad you’re posting here. And I’m quite sure that Winston isn’t the only legendary Briton turning high RPMs in his grave. For that matter:

“THE female British sailor captured and held by Iran has told how her captors stripped her to her panties, lied to her and threatened she might never see her baby again.”

…And if you listen real carefully, dimly audible over the whine of Winston’s revolutions you can hear the ghost of Boudicca weeping in shame.

    Feh.

“At one stage … (the interrogator) asked me, ‘How do you feel about dying for your country’,” she told the tabloid.

The correct answer “That would be a bloody great honour”

Actually, the correct answer is “If I have to, but I’d rather you died for my country”

I don’t really blame these kids; the British government has a habit of running down gear and training and then sending people in to do a job they’re not ready for.

I don’t know how many of the group were actually booties. Anyone who’s worked with them will know that the Royal Machine is a good outfit.

There’s a lot of questions that need answering.

Where was the chopper? Did they have the kit to mount effective resistance? How do a bunch of Iranian boats suddenly pole up right under the noses of a warship? There should have been time to leg it. Most importantly, what were their orders? Classic navy work.
