We’re sure that we’ll hear more stories like this one as the days go by and the details are sorted out and, if or when we do, we’ll talk about those as well. But right now, let’s hear it for a real, true, honest to G-d hero, Professor Liviu Librescu (link thanks to LC MuscleDaddy):

WASHINGTON – Prof Liviu Librescu, a senior researcher and lecturer at Virginia Tech, is among the 32 people who were killed during a shooting rampage at the university Monday.

His wife, Marlina, and two sons, Arieh and Joe, have already begun making arrangements for his burial in Israel.

One of Prof Librescu’s students, Alec Calhoun, who was with him at the classroom when the shooting started, told AP that at about 9:05 am, he and classmates heard “a thunderous sound from the classroom next door, what sounded like an enormous hammer.”

When students realized the sounds were gunshots, Calhoun said, they started flipping over desks for hiding places. Others dashed to the windows of the second-floor classroom, kicking out the screens and jumping from the ledge of the room.

Calhoun said that just before he climbed out the window, he turned to look at the professor (Librescu), who had stayed behind to block the door.

When a proverbial grenade rolled into his classroom, Professor Librescu, with no concern for his own safety, thinking only about the lives and well-being of his students, threw himself on it and bought, with his own life, enough time for his young charges to escape.

Were it in my power, I’d immediately award Professor Librescu the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian decoration for valor that we have.

Greater love hath no man…

Professor Liviu Librescu.

No gun control and his killer would have been dead before he emptied his first magazine, killed by a citizen in their guaranteed defense of their own and others lives.

In England after we banned almost all firearms they were freely available, as long as you didn’t care about the law. Now that criminals -know- that they have the pre-eminence of armament, armed crime is skyrocketing, despite the criminilisation of not only gun ownership, but knife ownership.

Gun control doesn’t work. All it does it provide the lawless with unarmed targets.

As I didn’t want to sully any comment on Prof Librescu by replying to BeerBong in the same post, I’m doubleposting.

This man is yet another example of a true hero, who in the direst of circumstances gave his all to ensure his students were allowed another day of life.

I know the Left will pervert his sacrifice (see above) by using it as an advertisment for their illogical and criminal policy of disarmament, but before they do so I’d like to pay homage to the spirit and bravery of Prof. Librescu, who like so many of his countrymen understand the necessity of fighting for ones people and ones life.

The world is lessened by his passing, be it so righteously.

The professor was a Holocaust survivor. I’ll bet that the sight of a single armed individual didn’t really faze him. In fact, the last words he might have uttered while blocking the door should have been, “Fuck you, pansy. I’ve spit in Evil’s eye. You’re not even a dangling turd on Evil’s ass.”

Then again, he was a hero in the truist sense of the word, not a potty-mouth like me. The world is a poorer place today.

    God here I go…..

I’ve been angry about this since I first heard about it. Angry that some deranged son of a bitch would take it upon himself to kill 31 people randomly all because he had some grudge boiling up in him. Angry that the body count wasn’t even tallied before we heard the cold uncaring leftie/marxists (that includes you beerisclear) barking about “guns are bad, bans are good”…there were reporters yapping about this at the first news conference yesterday, not asking about the ages of the victims or the actions of the brave noble gentleman pictured above….no, they used the blood of these children and this hero and the other innocents to write their agenda driven propaganda. The left and the media prove once again that they are NOT the caring loving side of the debate…they don’t give a damn about the families, the wounded, the dead, the traumatized….they only care about themselves and how they can exploit a tragedy like this to cover themselves in self-righteous glory.

Oh, they ACT like they care if they can use these people for a political prop. Do any of you think that the left really gives a shit for cindy sheehan or her poor son (who still lies unmarked in his grave)? Once this war is won, they’ll dump her like week old tofu. The same goes for these innocent dead at VT. They are nothing but props to the anti-gun nazis, to be stood in the corner…pointed to…and used to push another restriction or another ban (in grand nazi style).

News Flash beerisclear and the rest of you leftwing/marzist/nazi rapers of the Constitution, these victims of that homicidal son of a bitch were PEOPLE, they were KIDS, they were LOVERS, they were ATHLETES, they were HUMAN BEINGS…and I have to look at kids their same age every goddamned day in my classrooms and help them try to make sense of all of this. I let kids cry on me on the day of the 9/11 attacks, I let a 16 year old girl sit and chill in my office today at the high school because she was upset about this. You see, the big difference between us gun-loving, redneck, racist, sexist neocons and you leftist/marxist/nazis is that we really DO care about our fellow man. We don’t exploit them in the grand socialist tradition, we try to free them…to be independant and not reliant on a totalitarian government to tell them how to think and what to do and what they can and cannot have.

This massacre is not a result of too many guns on the street, it is a result of a system that has relieved the people of their accountability…not only to themselves but to each other…done by taking God out of the hearts, by taking free thought out of the minds, by making even the slightest insult a hate crime…as a result we cringe, we point the finger away from ourselves, we enact useless feel good laws that do nothing, we open the door to the beasts that will kill us because nothing is worse than offending them…even while they shoot up our children in their dorm rooms.

Before any of you leftist/marxist bastards spew any more of your “ban this restrict this you can’t say that” crap in my vicinity, I dare you to come into my classroom, I want you to look at those kids right in the eye, and apologize to them for the secular deviant course dark soulless society that you have dumped them in. It is this darkness of the soul, a soul without a God that triggers acts like this…and it’s your fault beerisclear and the rest of you leftist bastards…welcome to the result of your grand social experiment, better keep your head down.
This whole situation just sickens me. Pray for the wounded and the families of the dead.

    Ah, Spats -

I was wondering where you were.

Kinda busy these days.  Looking for a house, battling a touch o’ the flu, that sort of thing.

    Don’t feed the trolls.

Who’s feeding?  I’m just stating the obvious.

Use your time more wisely - use the links and ask your Reps and Sens to nominate the Professor for the Congressional Gold Medal.

Mine are fairly decent on that score - they won’t wait to hear from me, they’ll be pro-active and do it on their own.

    Good work that man.

The young fellows who knocked aside their classmates in their rush to escape, leaving an old man and their peers to die, will remember this day. I hope they learn from it.

Without an ingrained instinct to resist, people look to see what ‘everyone else’ is doing. That often means ‘panic’. The professor did his thinking for himself. If someone had helped him, maybe he’d still be with us.

I remember an incident in a place I was stationed in. A funeral procession was attacked by two gunmen, who lobbed grenades around and fired on the mourners with handguns. Yes, people backed off… but they didn’t run. They got in behind the gunmen and overwhelmed them. A few died, but less than you’d expect. The government were also spared the expense of a trial and imprisonment for the incident.

That place has had an unhappy history. The people there have learned the hard way (like Professor Librescu) that if you get the chance, get clear, but that if it’s up close, you have to resist.

People learn this lesson in one of two ways. You can learn it in the school of hard knocks (and there’d be no harder school than that Professor Librescu survived), or you can learn it in the military.

I’m uneasy about the idea of arming ‘civilians’. I recommend compulsory military service, with the right to bear arms at the end of that service, for all young men. Women wanting to be armed should also need to do military service, though it should be voluntary in their case.

Armed, panicking kids is the thing that worries me. Armed, trained kids, with the right instincts in the pinch, is another story.

I wrote to Schmucky and Shrillary, and Gun Control Freak McCarthy:

In light of the tragedy that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus this week, and in recognition of the heroic effort and ultimate sacrifice that Professor Liviu Librescu made to protect his students, I request that the [senator/representative] vote in favor of posthumously awarding the Medal of Freedom to the professor. If no bill has yet been drafted, I encourage the [senator/representative] to draft and/or sponsor the bill.

The Professor didn’t die…True Heros never do.

His Spirit lives on, surrounding each and every one of us.

May God give ME the strengh, and courage, to follow his example if ever I find myself in a similar situation.

“For this offering of their lives made in common by them all they each of them individually received that renown which never grows old, and for a sepulchre, not so much that in which their bones have been deposited, but that noblest of shrines wherein their glory is laid up to be eternally remembered upon every occasion on which deed or story shall call for its commemoration. For heroes have the whole earth for their tomb” - Pericles, Funeral Oration.

Not only did the man survive the Holocaust, he survived the hellhole of Romania, which was fiercely anti-Semitic, both before and after the war. Check into the history of the Romanian Iron Guards; they were up there with the WORST.

Librescu got out because the Prime Minister of Israel personally asked Ceacescu to release him. He was a noted leader in the field of some science that is beyond my comprehension.

It always make me feel like crying when a Holocaust survivor, whose made it through the worst to come to America or Israel, dies in some senseless act of violence. Like a junkie needing a fix and killing the survivor. Or theft. Or something like Virginia Tech.

One case that sticks in my mind is a man named Abe Lebewohl. He survived the camps, came to America poor as dirt, and by hard work and smarts, built his restaurant, The Second Avenue Deli, into a hugely successful business. A business with a heart. The heart was his homage to his family through creating and serving their food, and the recreation of that lost world, in the food, music and decor.

It became a landmark in NY, and tourists flocked there. And the food was TERRIFIC. I used to go there with my family, and there was such a warm spirit to it.

He used to take the cash deposits himself every night to the bank. Well, one day they found him dead and the money gone. His family put up a huge reward, but they still haven’t found his murderer.

The Second Avenue Deli closed a few years ago. We miss it.

A good man, who survived the worst and worked like a dog to make a good, honest life for himself and his family, murdered by some junkie or homicidal thief.

    It makes me cry.

On radio on the way home last night, heard an interview with the Professor’s son, also a VT grad.

Seems the young man spent his time at VT training others in self-defense techniques. Also, was tired of explaining his unusual name to others and was thinking of legally changing it, which understandably irritated his Dad. Said he’s incredibly proud and the name stays.

Of all the threads concerning the “IsmaelAx Attacks”…this is the one I have been looking for.
Thank you to all of you , who, in the face of this unfettered madness, have recognized this glaringly absent(in the media) story of the greatest Love a man can display.
I tend to believe (or hope) that our awareness will in the end– force the hand of liberalism (they will have to begin to mention him!!) To continue to shun this Professor’s ultimate stand against tyranny AS WELL AS the contrasting “Ismael angle” will prove to be two stories too important to totally ignore.
There is the tiniest bit of sympathy in me , for the liberals at the helm…”What If, it turns out…that they indeed discover a link between this madness and the Koran/Allah…AND an aging Holocaust survivor was one of the Heroes…Oy Vey! what a problem for the liberal academic community that has been massaging public opinion for a generation!
I too am encouraging the grassroots effort to make public tribute to the bravery of our dear professor, and also, to honor the Cadet who lost his life, trying to contain the murderer.

In Remembrance: The Day Professor Liviu Librescu gave his life…When he got up that morning, he was aware that in just a few hours, in Israel and around the world, people would begin a national/international day of Remembrance called “Holocaust Memorial Day”…When Professor Librescu looked out at his students that morning…and heard the old-familiar sounds of violence and terror on the other side of that door…he was no longer an aging man, no longer a teacher…he was standing in a place where,in Remembrance and Resistance to an old evil, he could say “NO! Not Here/Not on my Watch!”
His name, has within it a loosely Anglicanized phrase…It is phonetically prophetic of his elegantly simple act:
Livieu Librescu or–”Live,You! Lib(love)Rescue!…For his selfless love, perhaps a greater gift given, than has yet been appreciated…I thank the Creator who made this man. He has shown us what it is to stand as one man alone against Tyranny…wherever it may be found.

As a watchman on the wall, I call…learn from his example. As another voice in the wind,I ask that he be recognized, that his family be thanked; recognized for their loss, and their gift. Now, the USA has a reason to stand side by side with all who have personal links to Holocaust Memorial Day.
