(Overly long, we know, but bear with us. Or just ignore it).

Trooper THX1138 sends us this classic example of the “bait and switch.”

We’ll skip the bait, which is basically nothing but a preamble, offering three paragraphs worth of pious nonsense about how wonderful it would be if our students could learn a bit more about religion in school. A good point, since there is, thanks to the decades old socialist war on Christianity, a high level of religious illiteracy in our country. What our children know about basic Biblical facts they certainly didn’t learn in school unless they went to a private one. He also adds the caveat that it should be teaching, not preaching, which I, as a Christian, have absolutely no problem with. Quite to the contrary. I don’t want any religion forced down anybody’s throat, least of all my own.

Then, having assured that all of the Christofascists are nodding sagely with his token pablum, pacified by his pleasant bromides, he unloads the real agenda of his article:

Let’s also teach about Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and the world’s other major religions. Especially, let’s teach students about Islam.

And no, he doesn’t mean teach them about islam, he means indoctrinate them in the CAIR propaganda version.

But first, he has to set the scene properly, painting a picture of a peaceful, humble, yet horribly and unfairly oppressed Religion That Does Not Dare Speak Its Name (somebody tell that to the flying imams and their friend in the known terrorist front organization CAIR, please):

The necessity of learning about the world’s second most-popular religion was driven home for me on a recent visit to a small Muslim K-8 school in Oregon, operated by the Muslim Educational Trust. I initially noticed the conspicuous absence of an address - even a city - on the school’s website. Upon arrival, I was struck again by the school’s deliberate obscurity: Tucked behind a fence, it bore no sign and gave no indication whatsoever that students and teachers (many of them Caucasian, incidentally) were busy at work behind its non-descript white walls.

Why the obscurity? It sounds more like a heavily camouflaged army observation post deep behind enemy lines than a school and yes, that’s exactly what the author wants you to think. You see, those poor oppressed RoP’ers have to hide from the barbarian hordes searching high and low for them, so that they may rape, murder and pillage the poor innocents the first chance they get:

You can guess the reason why the school keeps its profile low. Islam is reviled in many quarters, equated with terrorism and iron-clad theocracy. Muslims and their mosques have been the targets of occasional violence and vandalism since the 9/11 attacks,

As we recall, a misguided ape went berserk and killed a Sikh right after 9/11. He later, if we remember correctly, got the death penalty that he so richly deserved. And that was right after the worst attack on American civilians in the history of our nation. His Majesty has never been as proud of his nation as he was when that turned out to be all of the backlash there would be. One too many, to be sure, but having just watched 3,000 of my countrymen murdered on live TV, murdered by muslim fanatics in the name of islam, I had feared a grief and anger-fueled orgy of retributions of truly Biblical proportions. Thankfully, that never came to pass.

Since then, there have been the occasional insulting act such as sticking a slice of bacon in a koran and leaving it outside a mosque and, of course, the pig’s head incident. Oh, and then there are the acts of “racist hatred” that were staged by muslims themselves to gain sympathy and increase the credit limit on their Visa Victim Card™.

And if you look at the actual statistics, you’ll see that for 2005 and out of a national total of 1,227 incidents of religiously motivated “hate crimes” (which includes “intimidation”, such as “you so ugly!”), 128 were directed at muslims. On the other hand, 848 were directed against Jews.

So is the author going to suggest that we start teaching about the Torah in muslim schools now? Best of luck, pal. You’re going to need it. That and a titanium collar to stop the scimitar.

and polling data show that nearly half the American public harbors negative views of Islam.

Which, of course, is entirely due to misinformation and irrational hatred of “the other.” It is completely inconceivable that it has to do with 8,176 acts of terrorism committed in the name of pisslam since 9/11. It is impossible that it could have to do with almost every armed conflict on this planet having muslims on one side of it. It is beyond the pale to suggest that it may have to do with 6 years of war and still not a peep of support out of a single, mainstream islamic denomination. Instead, we have numerous examples of islamic denominations cheering the murderers on. But it has nothing to do with that.

Oh no, it’s because of ignorance. We just need to “teach” the children “better.”

Or “lie”, as the proper word is.

Muslims and their faith are also on the receiving end of some harsh rhetorical attacks. Consider evangelical Christian leader Franklin Graham and his notorious post-9/11 comments about Islam - a “very evil and wicked religion,” in the estimation of Graham, the son of the revered evangelist Billy Graham and the man who delivered the invocation at President Bush’s first inauguration.

“Very evil and wicked” sounds just about right. Unless you have a better descriptor for a religion that openly and currently, from its very own pulpits, endorses oppression of women, genital mutilation, lying (as long as the person lied to is an “infidel”), stonings, beheadings, the death penalty for being raped, amputations for petty theft, the murder of those who leave islam and those who refuse to submit to it etc. etc.

If anything, “very evil and wicked” seems overly generous.

Also joining in the tarring-and-feathering of Islam is author Craig Winn, who has argued that the war on terror should be reconceived as the war on Islam because, as Winn sees it, terrorism is not a misapplication of the Muslim faith but its truest expression.

And so far, nobody has proven him wrong. It is taught in its “holy” book as virtuous, and not a single mainstream muslim denomination has renounced or denounced it. When they’re not being completely quiet about it, they’re actually encouraging it, endorsing it and/or excusing it.

Awash in these negative images of Islam, I found it fascinating to see a different face of Islam as I toured the Oregon school and listened to Wajdi Said, the executive director of the Muslim Educational Trust. Said, who has lived in this country for almost 20 years, contends that Americans dwell in near-complete ignorance of Islam, especially what it teaches about relations with other religions.

“The Islamic faith accepts the marriage of Muslims to Christians and Jews,” Said points out. In fact, Said adds, Islam’s history with other faiths hasn’t always been adversarial. Just the opposite, he says.

“Christianity and Judaism flourished under the protection of Muslim leaders through most of our history. We have a great history, and a great faith that accepts everybody. We need to educate Americans about the loving and caring face of Islam,” Said says.

Wonderful. I’ll be packing my Bible and my cross and go see Mecca then. I always wanted to visit that place, particularly since it might not be there for much longer if things don’t change right quick. I trust that I won’t be encountering any unpleasantness as I drive along the roads to see it, unpleasantness such as being murdered in a hail of machinegun fire.

What’s that? Oh. You were just engaging in a spot of taqiyyah again, were you Wajdi? Ha, you people are so funny when you do that. You crack me up, that’s what you do.

Unfortunately for Said and his colleagues, it’s a different face of the religion we tend to see in the West today

Reality is a cast iron bitch, isn’t she? Always interfering with what you want people to believe, throwing facts in the way of a perfectly wonderful fantasy.

- Islamic fundamentalists committing violence in the name of their faith and supposed followers of the prophet shouting their hatred of “infidels.” The emergence of al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden, only reinforces the dangerous face of Islam. The slaying of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Riots over the publishing of the prophet Mohammed cartoons. The list goes on. Scholars and pundits may debate the scriptural legitimacy of these expressions of the Muslim faith.

Yes, they may, but they never seem to want to, as LC & IB Robert Spencer has found out after having asked, begged and pleaded for years for islamic scholars to actually come out and debate. Still no takers, unless you call defamation, slander and screams of “LIES, LIES!” debate.

Surely learned muslim scholars who have spent their entire lives studying the koran and hadiths ought to be able to defend their faith calmly and rationally against the claims of a mere infidel?

Obviously not.

The logical conclusion must then be that he’s right.

But there’s no denying Islam’s image problem in the West.

How to counter that with appreciation for the hundreds of millions of Muslims who go about their business and religious practice in peace?

Maybe islam should start caring about their image? Maybe, if they’re so wonderfully peaceful and tolerant, they should stand up and protest the “hijacking” of their peaceful religion? Maybe their imams, scholars and pundits should start denouncing terrorism and the teachings of madmen such as Osama bin Laden openly and forcefully, teaching their flocks that he and his satanic minions are misguided, murderers, defilers of islam?

Imagine what an invaluable help that would be in our fight against terrorism. Imagine the trouble that the terrorists would have with recruiting young, naive men to their murderous cause if their own imams were speaking out against them, using the authority of the church to ‘excommunicate’ the terrorists and anybody who dared follow them.

When judging a faith, you must look to the heads of it and what they preach and, so far, the heads of islam are clearly on the same page as Osama.

But that’s not what the author of this load of drivel wants, of course. Oh no, he just wants us to lie to our children instead:

It all points back to education.

So cover my skin with a burqah
Chain my tongue with censorship
Stuff my nose with bromides
Coat my eyes with propaganda
Fill my ears with taqqiyah
Stick my legs in plaster
…and tell me lies about islam.

Thankfully, many U.S. colleges and universities have programs in Islamic studies and Arabic-language instruction. But while higher education is responding to the national need, “we have a long way to go” when it comes to teaching about Islam in America’s public schools, says Charles Haynes, who directs public education programs for the Freedom Forum’s First Amendment Center in Arlington, Va.

“Get them while they’re young and impressionable.”

You’ve read your Goebbels well, young Sturmfuhrer.

Teaching effectively about the Muslim faith, according to Haynes, has become all the more difficult post-9/11, in part because of conservative political pressure.

What? You mean our pesky insistence on sticking to the facts?

Damn straight.

From a practical standpoint, teaching about Islam offers compelling benefits for effective military and diplomatic strategy. The world is “aflame in faith,” as Yale University professor Jon Butler has written. The men and women of the U.S. military tend to know little about religions other than their own, Butler notes, “yet they have been asked to fight wars in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq over the past 15 years in which religion has stood at the very center of each conflict.”

By all means let’s teach them about the enemy they’ll be facing on the battlefield. Teaching them the facts about islam will, if anything, make them even more ruthless and efficient in dealing with the brainwashed adherents to that death cult. But we have a feeling that’s not what you want us to do.

Call it extreme optimism, but it is my hope that greater understanding of the world’s religions could eventually make the military argument moot. Understanding can lead us away from seeing only the worst in our ostensible “enemies,” and away from the religion-fueled violence that scars our time.

There’s only one side fueling religious violence here, and sticking our fingers in our ears, lying to our children about the realities of the world they will grow up in will not make them stop fueling it.

But that’s moral relativism for you: It doesn’t matter what is done to you, it doesn’t matter how brutal, obscene, unprovoked the attack is, it has to be your own fault somehow. If only you’d stop provoking your husband so much when he’s been drinking, if only you’d quit wearing those provocative, skimpy clothes around strangers, if only you’d quit flaunting your wealth in poor neighborhoods, if only, if only, if only…

If only you’d surrender and agree that it’s all your fault, that you’re asking for it and that only by submitting to your tormentor will you ever be free of guilt.

The worst part is that it is disgusting, servile, spineless imbeciles like that who wish to govern our nation. Let them at your own peril. At the peril of all of us.

And DON’T let them anywhere NEAR your children!

Maybe hope can be drawn from a change that’s about to happen at Said’s school. Anti-Muslim sentiment has calmed to the point where he feels he can finally mount a sign at the small campus, and he is moving ahead with plans to do precisely that.

Is it true that “Islam is peace”? That’s as over-simplified as saying Islam is inherently violent. In truth, the essence of Islam is a complex and contested issue. Much the same could be said about Christianity.

You can say it, to be sure, but until you can demonstrate, with clear examples, just how, when and where mainstream Christian churches are openly endorsing the wholesale slaughter, torture, abuse and oppression of people of other faiths, until you can do that, I’ll give your “argument” all the respect and serious consideration that it so richly deserves, which is exactly none.

And believe you me, if you can find such an example, if you can find such a mainstream Christian denomination endorsing such acts from their followers, then I’ll draw my sword and go help you slaughter the heretical beasts.

Yes, let’s teach our students about the Bible. But if we’re going to offer the kind of education that can make a difference in our divided world, let’s not stop there. Let’s make sure our students go into the world with some understanding of the Quran.

All I ever needed to know about islam, I learned on 9/11.

So far, after 6 years, islam has done absolutely nothing to teach me otherwise.

I wish they would, because otherwise we will one day have to deal with it in an appropriate fashion, and I’d much prefer that we never got to that point.

I’ve looked into it, and I have read pretty much all of Robert Spencer’s excellent essays about it and what it, the hadiths and modern islam has to say, and he most certainly has read quite extensively about the subject.

I have yet to see an argument that he couldn’t swat down in a second and, being the skeptic that I am, I’ve been quite open to seeing him proven wrong on anything about islam, anything at all.

    So far, no takers.

On paper this is fine, but in practice it can’t happen. For schools to teach about all religions, which the ACLU won’t let go by, what do you emphasize? Discussing a religions merits without debating how they approach right and wrong teaches nothing about belief.

With the rules as they are on debate in our schools you are not allowed to say something is right or wrong, so a debate is essentially impossible. To make an argument is to commit a “hate crime” against someone, and you can’t have that. To debate all beliefs are equally good is no debate.

As always, the central, unavoidable question is: What is Islam, and what is it not?

Because there’s no “official” hierarchy among Islamic clerics — certainly no papacy or the equivalent — non-Muslims can only go by the Islamic scriptures and the observed behavior of Muslims. Neither of these is to the religion’s credit, to say the least. More, attempts to “redefine” Islam to make it more palatable to the West run up against several obstacles:

    1. Taqiyya and kitman require that non-Muslims never take a Muslim at his word.

    2. The redefiners are almost never able to square their preferences with the Islamic scriptures.

    3. The great majority of the world’s Muslims are enthusiastic promoters of what our press calls “fundamentalist Islam” — the hard-core, no-interpretations, sharia-and-jihad variety.

    4. The redefiners and moderates turn up dead at the hands of their co-religionists with appalling frequency.

    5. Political entities that promote Islam are all of the “fundamentalist” persuasion. This includes both governments and nominally private Islamic-lobbying organization such as CAIR.

Given all that, I choose to side with Spencer and the good Emperor. This is not a faith we can safely admit to our shores. Europe has already learned this; dare we to dissent and risk having the lesson repeated on our own backs?

We will fight them sooner or later, just a matter of time and circumstance. Let the libs blame Bush, the simple fact is this has been building for some time, is included in their sick doctrines and will be attempted, regardless of who is in power. The dangerous, not to mention foolish game the left plays is believing the can overcome Islam after levering Islam against Christianity and Judiasm. They will fail…and get slaughtered by the thousands. No problem with that here. Or convert. Now wouldn’t that just be peachy to watch? but we on the other hand, would not. No need to look for the “true, pure, peaceful state” of islam, since there is no such thing. A cult so wrapped up in male insecurity and misogyny can only be lauded to a certain point, then even the dumbest cop on to its pathetic charade.
islam is like a religion trying to break through thousands of years of fear of, intimidation from, and insecurity caused by, women.
You give a muslim the choice, fundamentally, to abandon his god OR his control over women (which includes his ability to punish/kill them), and he will abandon god every time.
So many years, so many opportunities to evolve…and they STILL don’t allow women at mecca. Women STILL don’t have civil rights. Their ‘tradition’ is just a thin hajib covering the true nature of their religion, and that’s male insecurity.

Yeah, if there were one leader of Islam who actually denounced these people rather than just saying, “No, you don’t understand. Islam’s really a pretty nice guy when he’s sober,”

    Perfect analogy.

Yes, if such a leader were to appear, if one, just one major, mainstream denomination of islam were to embrace that message, then I’d be ecstatic with joy and spread their word far and wide.

Because that is the only way that we can avoid what seems inevitable right now: The eventual “last man standing” scenario.

Some people (Moonbats excluded because they do so deliberately and, besides, they’re too bloody dumb to be entitled to an opinion) misunderstand what I’m saying from time to time, thinking that I’m all about “killing the muslims.”

Nothing could be further from the truth. I’d love to not have to. I’d love nothing more than to live in peace with them as I live in peace with every other religion or non-religion, BUT THEY WON’T LET ME.

I can’t live in peace with a religion that literally holds a scimitar to the necks of myself and my loved ones and no, I WILL NOT SUBMIT.

I won’t pretend that islam is anything other than it currently is in order to be “polite” or “live in peace” with those who have no desire to live in peace with me. It’s a two-way street, and if they insist on a collision course, then so be it. I find no joy in that, I find great sadness in seeing what we eventually will have to do unless their faith and teachings change dramatically, but my grief at being forced to do the unspeakable will not stay my hand. Refusing to do what increasingly looks like it’s inevitable would be nothing short of a betrayal of all of my principles, a stab in the back to those who depend on me, who look to me for support and protection. I might as well slit their throats myself.

And I Will. Not. Do. It.

It’s not up to me anymore.

People just do not want to see the truth about Islam. They listen to the lies and double talk by the leaders and believe them because people are taught to trust those in authority.

Especially, let’s teach students about Islam.

Yes, let’s teach students all about Islam. Let’s teach them how the founder of the religion was a pedophile, murderer, rapist, slaver, and all around genocidal maniac.

Let’s teach them how two different sects of this religion are STILL FIGHTING over something that happened in the 700s. (No, I am not making that up). Let’s teach them how this religion glorifies and encourages the mass murder of innocents, suicide, rape, slavery, and any other horrific crime you can imagine.

Let’s teach them how the cultures based on this religion produce ZERO inventors, ZERO poets, ZERO artists, how any culture which follows this religion closely stays trapped in medieval times.

Let’s teach them how this religion is directly responsible for tens of thousands of terrorist attacks against civilians.

Yes, let’s teach all about Islam.

    Caveman,

They will fail…and get slaughtered by the thousands

No, not in the thousands, in the hundreds of millions. Don’t you know what these ‘people’ are planning? A Pakistani scientist set up a blackmarket nuclear bomb making network. Anyone with enough money can get into the nuclear bomb business. The Pakistani government not only knows about this, but supplied the money, the planes, the security…the scientist is just a front for the Pakistani government.

The Pakistanis have supplied N. Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Libya with the technology needed to be in the nuclear bomb business. And that is just the known customers. I am certain that they are also supplying this technology to the terrorists, the Islamic terrorists.

The Islamic fascists have deluded themselves into believing that the United States is a ‘paper tiger’ and will run away crying if they use nuclear weapons against us and Israel. They are so wrong. When they use a nuclear bomb, and I believe that it is no longer a matter of IF, but WHEN, the soccer moms in the U. S. are going to demand that the US military create the surface of the moon where the Islamic countries used to be.

The Islamists are sowing the seeds of their own destruction.

[…] Here, Misha’s taking on a tough issue. Without fear, compromise or mincing of words. I normally stay away from controversial issues, but I don’t think posting a link will earn me a fatwa. And here’s the catch: I’ve had differences with Misha on this issue in the past. And I’ve been banned because of it…Oh wait. I take that back. Contrary to what some trolls say, you don’t get banned from the Rottweiler by having a difference of opinion. You get banned by being a jerk who cuts and pastes the latest nutjob rants, whether they have anything to do with the post being commented on. (Yeah, I know. I’m a sailor. I’m allowed to end a sentence in a preposition.) […]

I’m an amateur, and have no idea how to do a trackback. It looks like this is just going to come through as a comment.
No surprise there. I can’t do anything right.
