Funny how the DemCong are always wailing, pissing and moaning about keeping the Christofascists out of their bedrooms, particularly when there is no area of life that they’re not just itching to lord it over by decree. First, they outlawed toilets that you only had to flush once, and now they’re working on outlawing incandescent light bulbs.

Forget about convincing us that it might be a good investment, seeing as how the fluorescent ones use less energy and last longer, forget about letting the free market work its magic, let’s just order the serfs in our DemCong paradise to do as we tell them to. For their own good, of course.

I don’t like meddlers, I never have.

As a matter of fact, saying that I “dislike” them is an understatement on a cosmic scale.

They make me angry. Very, very angry.

And I get so damnably unpleasant when I’m angry like that.

And don’t start pissing me off by trying to convince me how wonderful fluorescent bulbs are. I’m well aware of their advantages and I’m not at all opposed to the idea. That’s not the point. The point is that it’s none of government’s damned business to tell me what fucking bulb to stick in my lamps. If I switch bulbs, and I’m sure I will at some point, it’ll be because I want to, not because some Idiotarian, overpaid, busybody sack of rancid ratshit in government tells me to.

Government’s first order of business should be to do all they can to stay the fuck out of my business.

If they don’t respect that, they’ll be sorry.

Very, very, very sorry.

Absolutely silly. There is a thrving market in normal toilets that dont have to be flushed 10 times. What’s next, red meat, sugar?

Yes, most folks forced to endure those gutless, anemic, low flow toilets. I choke ‘em with great regularity, getting a kick outta’ watching them gag and convulse. My house, being seventy years old, built like a fortress, harbors an endangered species, an honest to God, manly, five gallon toilet! No, it is not for sale. Maybe the Krapper Kops will be around to visit……..but look at the bright side, I do have flourescent bulbs and energy efficient appliances. Because they save me money. Hear that, socialists?

Just wait until everyone gets the bill for having to dispose of those florescent bulbs. They’re hazardous material, and aren’t supposed to be thrown away in regular household trash.

Garbage companies only take them now because it’s not worth the hassle to not take them. If using them is legally mandated, garbage companies will have to stop taking them, meaning the homeowner will have to pay to dispose of their tubes full of mercury. Hazardous waste disposal is NOT cheap. I love it when a plan isn’t thought through.

I agree 100% with this post and I’ve been telling the nanny staters this for months. I believe Australia already has this kind of law on the books and that is likely a contributing factor to the socialists frothing fervor to get this legislation going.

CFL bulbs are about 70% more efficient than incandescent bulbs. The average home owner pays anywhere between 4% and 10% of their electricity bill for lighting (depending on which source you find), so you could save 3-7% on your electric bill if you switch all of the lighting in your house.

CFL bulbs do have problems. First, they have trace amounts of mercury in them so you have a health risk in your home if you break one. I read a nightmare story not long ago where a woman spent $2000 cleaning her house because of this accident. This also requires different disposal methods which I imagine we’ll all have to pay for. Second, there are many situations where CFL bulbs just wont cut it and are aesthetically unpleasant. If you have dimmers in your house, they wont work with CFL bulbs.

There are probably more reasons. I had a CFL bulb that was supposed to work in those 3-way lamps but it didn’t. I’m sure they’ve fixed that problem by now.

This legislation would do very little to change industry since most lighting is already fluorescent (at least the businesses I’ve been in).

The total “Carbon reduction” of the US by requiring everyone to switch would be very minimal…on the order of one tenth of one percent.

I bought 40 of ‘em on ebay my parents save a pretty penny on their already bloated electric bill. I’m going to take about 10 of em back to israel, the ones they sell in israel are nasty light.

Theoreticaly it makes sense, there are 4 light bulbs in my room here, i’d say about 25 total, of which 6 are on all night (3 outside, bathroom and 2 kitchen)

It looks all fuzzy on paper, we can lower the electricity we consume…

Truth is, it would lower the goverment electrical spending etc.. but so what ? there are 500 different aspects and sectors that can lower the energy output, the carbon output, the polution and shit like that.

But no doubt, firstly the goverment cant control us, and 2 fuck off with this bullshit and find some more creative ways to waste your 4 years in office.

You know what, Devildog, you’re absolutely correct.

On this particular subject, I REALLY know what I’m talking about, since I happen to BE one of those garbage men who picks up florescent bulbs because it’s not worth the hassle not to.

It is against Federal law to dispose of florescent bulbs in regular trash. (It’s also against Federal law to dispose of car tires, refrigerators, water coolers, air conditioners, paint, oil, and chemicals, as well. Hasn’t stopped anyone from trying it yet, though.) We only pick them up because the arguments with customers just aren’t worth the hassle.

“It’s just a stupid light bulb! Whaddya mean, you can’t throw it away?!”

“It’s a tube with mercury in it. Mercury doesn’t go to the landfill.”

“Fine. I’ll just hide it in a garbage bag from now on.”

“You’ll still be breaking the law, and mercury will still be getting into the water supply.”

    “So? That’s someone else’s problem.”

After about…20 years or so of that conversation, we just pick the stupid things up. That will change in a heartbeat if CFBs become mandated.

Here in Toronto, that bulb-ban is taking place Jan 1, 2008.
Amazing how a trend, accompanied by a movie, can bring the socialists out of the woodwork.
Why is it that, when the public is finally focused on something universally, that we end up with another “ban”, instead of actual discourse and common sense? Everyone is so reactionary and illogical. Makes me want to rebel. I never had the urge to litter until the enviroweenies told me how much of a pig I am (my recycling, 4-cylinder-driving, tax-paying, evil self).
I want a continental-sized block of ice to break off from their favorite ice cap so they’ll finally STFU. When the water rises 2 inches, we can tell them it rose 20 feet, and not to come out until we tell them it’s safe.

And next they will mandate a change from the CFL bulbs to the LED ones, because “they save just a bit MORE electricity, and they don’t have Mercury, either!” Never mind that they currently cost about 10 times what a CFL does.

Far as I’m concerned, not only do we need to push to stop this, we need to start a push to repeal some of the other things that are already on the books.

James is right. These things may be good for most applications but are definitely not suitable for others.

CFL’s contain switching electronics which introduce harmonics into your electricity supply (ie. noise on your hi-fi).

CFL’s do not work with dimmers.

CFL’s do not like being switched on and off frequently, so are almost useless for security lighting.
CFL’s need to have airflow around them or they get too hot and die very quickly (i actually had the body of one crack in half because I used it in a recessed light fitting, where the 40 cent incandescent works beautifully).

I’m ashamed to say my government was the groundbreaker in enacting this stupid ban. They ovbiously didn’t consult with any electrical engineers before plowing ahead with it.
Why ban incandescents ? I, like most people here, wouldve bought CFL’s to save money WHERE IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE THEM. With this stupid ban in place I will actually have rooms in my house I won’t be able to keep lit….

I do use fluorescent lights wherever possible. However, in my ceiling fan/light fixtures which are controlled by a remote, the fluorescent bulbs block the signal from the remote and renders the thing unusable. If incandescents became illegal, I’d have to throw out my remote-controlled light fixtures. That would piss me off.

It’s shit like this that makes me throw in the towel on energy reduction. I’m more than happy to do my part, but when you start mandating things I -have- to do, I’m not only going to fight every step of the way, I’m likely to stop doing anything that doesn’t come with a penalty.

So in honour of this upcoming ban, I’m going to spend the afternoon wrist deep in toxic petroleum distillates and detergents freeing heavy metals and carbon into the atmosphere, then I’m off to the range to scatter smokeless powder residue and copper jacketed lead all over the place. I finally got my issues sorted and purchased my first non-rimfire rifle, a Yugo 59/66 I’ve decided to call Darja :)

Check me if I’m wrong, but if the gov’t imposes a ban, they’re going to have to write and print regulations for the ban and have some way to implement said ban. Even if that task is given to an existing agency, the agency will want to expand and want a larger budget, and will get both.

My taxes will go up, more resources will be expended, an unnecessary burden will be placed on The People who were already switching to CFL.

Plus, our anti-spam engines aren’t the greatest thing since sliced bread, as much as their creators would like to think they are.

There are no absolute trouble-free systems for fighting SPAM. The current filter has paid for itself over 7,000 times in the past 45 days or so.

Some people get tagged as SPAM because either an email address, link, or even IP address has been tagged in one of the SPAM clearinghouse databases in the past. Perhaps you left a comment on another blog and that blog owner either by accident or on purpose tagged that comment as SPAM. Now you are on ‘the list’.

The good news is, that if you are on ‘the list’, you can eventually get off of it because when your comment gets rescued here, it is reported to that ‘list’ and eventually it gets dropped.
