After having watched this footage out of Iraq, courtesy of Hot Air, His Majesty has to admit that he’s feeling strange stirrings in his pants:

Take that, Mahdi Motherfuckers.

That was a thing of beauty.

My guess was a Cobra, from the rockets/30mm gun they were using, but I’m no expert…… And the Cobra (and it’s offspring) have always been chubby inspiring :)

I almost had a little “cream in my coffee.” Good secondaries.

At first I thought they were AC-130 gunships firing the 105 howitzer but then realized that they use 20 MM instead of 30 MM. Nice to finally see the gloves off!!

    Rock On!!!

That would explain the “Nigel Seismic Activity Alarm™” readings.

‘Twas indeed a thing of beauty. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I don’t think that raw footage and running commentary was the work of CNN’s Baghdad Bureau.

30mm would be an A-10, more likely than not.

Whatever it was, it also had rocket pods.

Go get ‘em, boys. Leave no terrorist alive.

Oops, make that “terrorist.” My bad.

They were AH-64 Apache helos. They are equipped with a 30mm cannon and can carry 2.75″ Hydra rockets or Hellfire missiles or a combination of both. Judging by the size of the explosions and the target, I would say they were firing the Hydras. They have 10 or 17 pound HE warheads and are more of a general purpose weapon than the Hellfire, which has a specialized warhead for taking out heavily armored targets.

Is it wrong that I find this amusing? I’m normally a peacenik, but I like seeing bad guys get it. Is that wrong? :undecided_tb:

That reminds me of that scene from the Boys from Company C.
Well, except instead of a random hillside it’s a bunch of jihadis getting exploded.

    Uhmmm,…. No.

    I’m normally a peacenik,

Most of us here are pretty peaceable folks too, ya know. Just don’t piss us off.

but I like seeing bad guys get it.

You say that like it’s a Bad Thing. It’s not, it’s part of being human.

    Is that wrong?

Not at all. Remember, every time a Jihadi dies, the good people of the world hoist a cold one!

Thanx … I was unaware that the US military was now using lower velocity 30mm ammo in its chainguns. When I heard 30mm, I assumed A-10.

Livingbrit, Cobras are comparatively rare nowadays. Though the USMC still uses them (mostly because the Navy keeps cancelling any planning for a replacement) there are just a few Cobra units still in the Guard- otherwise, the Army is all Apaches. Also, the Cobra is equipped with a three barrel 20mm cannon, not 30mm.

oh yeah… BOOM! oooh, pretty :P

That rocked! How different would public opinion on the Long War be if they saw some of this from time to time instead of just a one sided body count every single day?

  22. LC Guido Cabrone Comment by LC Guido Cabrone

Woody Personally, I’d like to see the morning briefings come back, rather like they did during the 91 Gulf War.

(I STILL savor the memory of the Public Information Officer trying to keep from falling to the floor in laughter, (let alone keep a straight face), while explaining that an F-15 pilot had “shot down” an Iraqi helicopter the previous night with a 1000lb LGB…)

Those were some impressive secondary detonations towards the end.

Unless couscous has gotten a lot spicier since the last time I was east of Istanbul, methinks that it’s going to be hard for the MainStreamMedia to spin that one.

Whoops, my bad. Shame about the Cobra though, they were flying before I was born and I was sure they’d just keep going and going. In my mind, there are few aircraft as outright menacing nose on.

Mind you, it’s nice to know our airmen have all the shiny, up-to-date date death at their fingertips in the Apache :)
