ABC, perhaps worried that the New York Slimes is getting ahead of them in the Aid and Comfort to the United States’ Enemies Sweepstakes™, up the ante by revealing yet another Administration plan to the Islamofascists (link thanks to LC jewells52):

The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com.

The sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, say President Bush has signed a “nonlethal presidential finding” that puts into motion a CIA plan that reportedly includes a coordinated campaign of propaganda, disinformation and manipulation of Iran’s currency and international financial transactions.

“Because of the sensitive nature of the subject?”

More like, as LC & IB Bill Quick so eloquently puts it, because the “anonymous sources” know full well that they’re breaking a ream of federal laws by revealing classified information that will aid declared enemies of the United States in a time of war, something that used to be known as “treason” and “espionage”, and the Islamofascist sympathizers in the CIA don’t much feel like facing the consequences of that.

The ABC, of course, have no problem with that. But we already knew that they were on the other side, so that should come as absolutely no surprise at all.

Rope. Tree. Journalist.
Some Assembly Required.

Traitors and journos blindfolded and crying,
Loose-lipped officials in dank dungeons dying,
The bowels of a spy opening up as he swings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

I’ve got some more breaking news fresh off the AP, the CIA has received presidential approval to perform “black-ops” against the Soviet Union!

I mean shit is this story really shocking, it would be news if the CIA wasn’t doing anything to destabilize the Iranian regime. It just seems like ABC and Brian Ross trying to force a non-story.

Aren’t these the same folks who were so deeply offended over the non-outing of Valerie “I Play a Covert CIA Agent” Plame? What a joke. One of the terrorist greatest allies comes to help! The terrorist admit they can’t defeat us militarily….they must have the “court of popular opinion” to defeat us the same way we were defeated (and by the same enities, who are enshrined and memorialized in the War Museum in Ho Chi Min City) Vietnam. Therefore the terrorist greatest ally (and the ones intent on losing the rebuilding of Iraq) are the MSM …the drive by media and thier friends , the liberal anti-war (who are responsible for millions of deaths….just think of the 3 million murdered in SE Asia after we left there! plus the many killed in the Middle East with encouragement to pursue thier “cause ” from the Liberal US media and the antiwar imps)

Hilarious. Yep, that Bush, he’s sneaky. Why, in the past six years I’ve listened to folks explain how he’s really setting up the UN for destruction (right after France and Germany), how he’s cleverly manipulated Hamas into self destruction (meanwhile freeing Lebanon from Syrian and Iranian influence), tricked Mookie Al Sadist into conquering most of Shia Iraq on behalf of Iran, Gollywhopped the journaljismers so badly his approval ratings are now approaching 90 percent, ridden to victory on the backs of Harriet Miers and Ports Dubai, created a permanent GOP majority with his genius amnesty plans, cleverly threatened the Saudis into no longer financing damned near every terror high school and mosque in the world, and now, well, he’s doing this to “fuck with Iran.”

As far as the leaker goes, it is possible the leak was purposeful. It’s been done before. Well, first of all, wouldn’t most CIA operations of this type fall into the “black” category? A little observation from the Department of Redundancy Department.

And, with all the time spent lately attempting to prove how much of a Moron President Bush is (and G-d knows he’s done plenty to help), why is it we’re being fed this crap that he’s so smart to manage even a third of the things listed by dp above? C’mon, members of the fucked fourth estate, you can’t have it both ways, no matter how bad you want to.

Like many of us with backgrounds in the military, the first thing that crossed my mind when I heard this “news” was that it was an intentional leak. But, then I remembered that the Clintoon administration destroyed all of the boots on the ground intel we had in that part of the world, so I changed my mind. It’s a leak, and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out it’s right out of the Intelligence Commission on the Hill. I mean, al-Pelosi DID promise a more ethical Congress, right?

Intentional leak was my first thought too but, then again, we’re talking about the Clown Administration and I’ve been burned by their incompetence too many times to even begin to have hopes about them doing something intelligent or, in the case of the threat from Iran, anything at ALL.

Bill, all gruffness aside, certainly has that right, and if he’s a bit peeved off then we’ve got that in common. “Peeved off” doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about the “do nothing” boobs in DC, sitting on their incumbent arses while the Iranians smuggle arms into Iraq and continue their nuke program without a care in the world.

Besides, when we leak intentionally, it’s usually through the foreign press, one of the reasons being that we won’t have to slap our own for publishing it, and we don’t really have much jurisdiction over, say, the London Times or the Frankfurter Allgemeiner.

And why would we leak this intentionally? The Mad Mullahs are already convinced that there’s a CIA agent behind every mosque and that we’re causing everything from hangnails to poor harvests.

Oh, and the thought of the CIA doing anything that would benefit this Administration and the Long War is almost as ridiculous as assuming that Foggy Bottom would ever say a gruff word to terrorists or terrorist regimes.

Finally, as Rurik points out, it doesn’t matter whether it was intentional or not, at least as far as ABC’s culpability goes. They still published information that they knew to be classified and highly sensitive, they admitted as much themselves, and that’s spying. Spying as in “hanged from the neck until dead.”

Unless of course ABC was in on it too, but now we’re really moving into Truther La-La Land. The MSM helping the Administration and assisting in the war effort?

    BWAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Oh, stop it, now you’ve gone from snarky to outright ridiculous!

And it still amazes me that the enemy in the Gulf states thinks there’s that many HUMINT assets available. I mean, didn’t Billy Boy make it plain enough during his 8 years that the only thing he wanted the intel world to be able to do was find another place for him to stick his cigar?

If hanging was good enough for Benedict Arnold, it’s good enough for the entire cast at ABC, and they might as well take the head of Disney Corp while they’re at it.

jewells, intentional leaks can be useful to misdirect the enemies attention away from your real efforts, to conceal what you really know by making them think you believe A when you really believe or know B, conceal sources, etc.

Every time intelligence agencies evaluate info, they have to try and get in their opponents heads and determine whether it’s valid or not.

Espionage is often times more voodoo magic than an art or science, and sometimes just plain dumb luck. It’s a chess game to the millionth power.

I’ll give you an example of a famous intentional leak. In early 1944 the body of a dead British officer, drowned presumably after his ship was sunk, washed up on the shore of occupied fwance. He had an attache case handcuffed to his wrist and his ID identified him as a known member of the British General Staff. In the case were classified orders for the upcoming invasion of Europe, D Day. The orders showed that the allies were going to land at the Pas De Calais, instead of Normandy.

There was a lot of debate in the German High Command about where the invasion would be. The classified documents reinforced their belief that it would come at Pas De Calais, the logical site.
The thing is of course that the body and orders were all a false plant by MI5. Even though the Germans didn’t buy it totally, it created enough doubt that, when combined with other factors, it delayed Hitler releasing the Panzer reserve divisions just long enough to allow the allies to establish a beach head at Normandy.

Not exactly a deliberate leak to the press, but there have been enough of those that were done for the same reason. I just don’t remember the details enough to comment intelligently on them. There was a hell of a lot it during the Cold War though, like leaks about SDI, just enough to get the Soviets really worried about a capability we didn’t have so that they spent themselves into oblivion trying to counter it.

Very true. What also helped was that it fit with what the Germans were already convinced would be the case. People will believe anything if they either want it to be true or fear that it is. Terry Goodkind calls it the Wizard’s First Rule, but it’s been around a bit longer than his books.

That MI5 plant was one of the more brilliant implementations of the intentional leak.

Seems to me the D-Notice (now apparently called a DA-Notice) isn’t always a bad thing.

And yes, I know it’s a curtailment of the First Amendment, but I’ve never been an absolutist when it comes to allowing treason.

Mrs. M, thanks for the correct details of the operation. In my muddled memories I had attached it to part of the Operation Overlord misinformation. There were so many counter-intelligence ops going on with D-Day I got it confused.

    Not exactly.

Putting my spook hat on, the point of intentionally leaking something like that (and that’s assuming that it was an intentional leak) would be to increase the paranoia among the Mullahs, making them crack down harder on their own population and thus sow discontent and dissatisfaction with the regime.

The thing is, the Mad Mullahs are already convinced that we’re doing everything that the leak claims that we’re doing, so there’d be precious little point in adding to it.

Yw Crunchie, but really the only reason I remember what it was called was because I just finished reading Tom Clancy’s “Red Rabbit”. I’m a big WW2 history buff, but I had never heard of this gem until I read that book. It intrigued me so I had to look it up and read about it.

I am NOT a conspiracy theorist. At all. But I DO know enough NOT to make a decision based on the little bit of information I have on this, and what I DO have seems just a bit too convenient, and it just doesn’t feel right.

    I’m just not convinced.

That may have applied once, not so long ago in the grand scale of time, but these days? c’mon….they won’t slap anybody for this, let alone have a trial…

I suspect that many liberals would object to the covert activity against Iran for this reason:

“We’re not at war with Iran.”

Of course we’re at war with Iran - or, more accurately, it’s at war with us. It arms some of the “insurgent” forces. It supports Hezbollah, which has been at war with the United States ever since the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing. Hezbollah was behind the 1996 Khobar Towers attack.

I could also add that Hezbollah is at war with Israel, but the United States has yet to take the position that terrorist organizations at war with our ally Israel is at war with us. (So why are we allies?)

Very good read by one of the principles and originators of Operation Mincemeat, and, if you are interested in WWII Military History, you should own it. Just a thought, but I always believed the first “shot across the bow” was the assasination of Presidential Candidate Bobby Kennedy in 1968.
