Today is a day dedicated to remembering and honoring our fallen, the ones who gave all to protect us and the ones to whom we owe this Shining City on a Hill that we call home.

It is a day of reflection, of gratitude and of taking stock of how we’ve used that precious of gifts that our noble fallen bought us with their own blood, but it is also a day of joy. Joy because we have such men and women, and joy because of all of the blessings that their sacrifice has given us.

So today, as you get together with your families, be joyful that they existed, be grateful that they loved this nation and you so much that they gave their lives to protect her, and raise a glass to the invisible ones guarding the perimeter around your dinner table.

Thank you. We will never forget.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

– Lt. Col. John McCrae, 1872-1918

    Greater love hath no man…

Like I said in Jackboots thread, Ask yourselves today if you are living lives worthy of their sacrifice.

And yes Emperor, thank you for reminding me that today is not only for solemn remembrance of their sacrifice, but for grateful gratitude that they lived.

Thank you, Misha. I find that I am ever mindful of the price that was paid for the freedom and the material abundance I enjoy. I will never forget. I will always be grateful. Moreover, I hope I am worthy of doing my part to defend my and others’ liberty. I pray I can be a good soldier, and live up to the true heroes.

I do really want to honor all of the people who have died fighting for freedom in America. I’m not thinking of this as a fun holiday to buy towels. I am taking it very seriously. My one shopping trip will be to get prescription drugs.

Now I am going to make a post disagreeing with the prevailing wisdom, and I don’t want that to be interpreted as my disrepecting all the fallen veterans. Freedom of speech is a pretty important part of this country. Having a different opinion does not automatically make you seditious.

    Scott G
checked out your post, of course. Iran has become a serious player in the Iraq War. I think it makes sense to meet with them. That is not an evil thing to do that is horrible to the troops. Maybe we can come to some agreement with them and reign them in some. The leader has lost a lot of his popularity to reformist groups, and the more we isolate him, the more power he has. He is an evil bastard, but there is a significant reformist movement in Iran (don’t know how much they could change things–not a Middle East expert [yet]). My point is that you could look at this as an effort to help the troops, rather than being a slap in the face. I could be wrong (no!), but I thought the administration had been criticized by security experts for not dealing with Iran more.

Boy, isn’t it great that this is such a big shopping day!

Don’t worry PC, my teeth aren’t as sharp as everyone else’s here.

It’s a slap in the face because it’s going against all we’ve been talking about concerning the Axis of Evil. They need to be isolated, not pandered to. I hardly think the reformers are that good either. If they just plan to make the regime Islamist with a human face, they’re still going to be stamping said face with a boot.

Having those who are arming the terrorists set up the army and police will do nothing for the free country we want to set up there. All it will do is tell the world we can’t beat the mullahs so we gave in. Iran “helping” will only hurt those who oppose the Persians. Saudi Arabia won’t take too kindly to that either. Expect more terrorism, not less.

    Thanks for reading.

Cindy Sheehan makes me want to barf. I have to remind myself that every soldier who is memorialized today died so that she could spew her bilge without censure. She does go over the line, with saying that her son died for Israel and other anti Semitic statements, along with the ridiculous “occupied New Orleans” garbage. Maybe we can come to some agreement with them and reign them in some.

Very kind, but the situation doesn’t work that way.
They don’t think like we do.
Agreements mean nothin’ at all to these people. Agreements mean flashy travel, fiery speeches, pompous posturing and extravagant buffet’s.
Not one little bitty agreement I’ve ever seen has ever been actually implemented and complied with by iran. One could grow old googling for any sign of a contract being complied with anywhere, outside of arms deals. They lie. For real. They sign agreements, then make big speeches as they violate them. No deals.

Any contracts their muckrakers can construe as “reigning them in” plays like a rally to arms in the mullah-media. Not a good plan A.

I say from all along the Iraqi border, we keep blasting MTV, Country music, Nickelodeon, The Outdoor channel,Playboy channel and maybe the Food channel at their tender brains till they buckle and collapse under the weight of American consumerism.
When we own their children…we needn’t agree.

Hey Ten-Ten, what I found most disturbing in her letter was this line:

I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children

God have mercy on those poor kids, they don’t deserve that fate.

But THIS line shows some promise:

and try to regain some of what I have lost.

could that be her sanity perhaps?

But what I found most encouraging was this brilliant line:

    Good-bye America …

    and Good riddance looney tunes

you are not the country that I love and I finally realized no matter how much I sacrifice, I can’t make you be that country unless you want it.

Good, ‘cuz we don’t want it

First off, a hearty ‘thank you’ to all service members past and present; those who lived, those who died, and those who simply stood ready. And let’s not forget the families who make it possible for them to do so. Let us also not forget that some day any one of us may be called to follow in their footsteps, whether we plan it or not. “Eternal Vigiliance”

On this day, I would like to offer this, a poem that is spoken with the deepest reverence at every veterans memorial ceremony.

This poem every child learns in school..and regardless of who it was written for, it honours those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Every day I remember, each day I give thanks that we are allies of a nation whose sons and daughters are the champions of freedom, and the guardians at the Gate.

    With head bowed,

    LC Brendan

    For The Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They sleep beyond England’s foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
    As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

    1) Nancy Pelosi (who I actually do like–yes, I’m evil)

I don’t think the grandchildran as props was wonderful. I don’t think it’s at all hypocritical to support the right to an abortion and have kids. Abortions aren’t forced on you (except in China). 50% of the pregnancies in this country are unplanned, and not everyone should have/wants kids. the partial-birth ones were a rare procedure and I think it should be up to the woman and her doctor. It is a disturbing procedure. I don’t think it’s wonderful.

    2) I think this argument will go round and round, like in a blender. The people that want to bring the troops home think they are doing the right thing, and I don’t think they should be viewed as traitors. At one point, some knoweldgable people thought that our presence in Iraq was inflammatory and drawing more terrorists into the country. That would argue that removing the troops would help the war. However, I suspect that is not the case any more, and I do not sign the ubiqitous petitions to bring the troops home.

You may be paying taxes on a baby, but don’t forget that illegal immigrants pay $7 billion a year into social security and don’t get it back (NYT online). It’s really helping the balance of what SS is taking in versus what is paid out. Those chain e-mails that say II don’t pay into ss are lies. I wish there could be a civilized debate about these things (in general–not a bash of this post)

Obviously, there is a limit to how many people this country can absorb. I’m not in favor of unregulated immigration, although I don’t blame people who come here to work hard. They probably do depress the wages for low-paying jobs.

If the Illegals are using someone elses SS# or under the table they are NOT paying into Social Security. I have to scrape and barely get a paycheck to pay for insurance that hardly pays for anything, my husband has his own business so we do not have insurance from him. I went out to a cemetery and walked from stone to stone, locating those that were in the military and mentally thanked them.

PsychoChick, the actual amount they paid into Social Security is irrelevant if they prevented a larger amount from being paid into it. Here in Georgia, a recent raid on a Chicken packing factory drove out hundreds of illegals earning $7 an hour. the next day, the same business was offering $10 an hour, and there were PLENTY of Americans who lined up for THOSE jobs. The end result was that MORE social security was going into the fund on an hourly basis without illegals than with illegals. The $7 billion sounds like a great big amount, but not if they prevented $10 billion in collections from being obtained if the jobs were being worked by Americans. There is no such thing as jobs that Americans refuse to do: there are jobs which Americans refuse to do for chickenfeed.

You may talk about social security, but what about income taxes? For instance, they could cite a large number of dependents, raising their exemptions and lowering state and federal income taxes. How many actually wait around to reconcile their taxes paid with Taxes actually owed? by filing an income tax return? That’s why we file income tax returns: to compute what is actually owed and settle up the difference between that and what was withheld. Remember, employers are not allowed to question the number of exemptions an employee claims, and the IRS cooperates by going after the employee, not the employer, when the exemptions are not justified. In fact, my employer withholds the minimum required amount, which means I would owe money unless I directed more withholding than required (which I do). Most of my income tax refund comes from itemized deductions, like charities, not overwithholding by the employer.

Those are excellent points, but there is one thing that I would disagree with you on: “there are jobs which Americans refuse to do for chickenfeed.”

A lot of Americans in this country are working for minimum wage, and the poverty rate is increasing (Bob Herbert, NYT). People are working really hard, but not making it because the pay is so low. I think that is unacceptable for US citizens.

    Princess Natasha
I have a major issue with thinking that illegal aliens get free medical care. Maybe they do in parts of the country. There is a whole contingency of aliens that are really sick from helping to clean up Ground Zero and they are not getting health care. That doesn’t seem right to me.

What’s with the welfare whore comment? Some people really are poor and live in areas where there are no jobs, or have the super low wage jobs. Rural poverty is a big issue. Most people on welfare just do it for a couple years until they get back on their feet. The multi-generational welfare abusers are much less common. Most of the people on welfare are white. I’ve known people on welfare, and they hated it (and got off it and now run a bookstore).

And as far as welfare fraud, it’s chickenfeed. The cost of Medicare fraud is more than the total amount of money spent on welfare. (Do not let this be construed that I practice or condone fraud. It pisses me off. I have never stolen so much as an office pen in my life.)

What’s with the Hummer? A Prius drives really well and gets 50 mph highway miles. (That’s what I’ll probably get the most grief for. Well, I commute 40 miles, and it was a good choice.)

I have a major issue with thinking that illegal aliens get free medical care.

They do, and this is how it works. Illegal Alien come into the country with his 8 to 9 months pregnant wife. She goes into labor, they rush to the emergency room. Baby is delivered, twenty-four hours or so later, they leave the emergency room, after getting a birth certificate for the baby, showing that the baby is an American citizen. (By virtue of being born in this country.)

Now, for msot of us, a trip to the ER is covered by insurance. If we do not have insurance, the ER will bill us for the visit, and we make arrangements to pay the bill.

However, the illegal doesn’t have insurance, probably doesn’t give anything resembling a real address or other contact information, and so the ER has no way of collecting for the bill. It eventually becomes a “charge off”, and the hospital eats the costs.

Now, two weeks later, the baby has a fever, so the parents, (still in the country, because the father, having obtained some form of forged ID, has found a job somewhere, perhaps in a chicken packing operation?), bring the baby back to the ER again. Once again, even though there is still no insurance, they are treated by the ER staff, and sent on their way. Again, no bill is ever paid. This can continue for years.

Now, how is this possible? It revolves around the following.
    1. No hospital is allowed to refuse emergency care to any patient.
    2. No hospital is allowed to inquire as to the immigration status of any patient.
    3. In some states, local and state police are legally barred from inquiring into the immigration status of any patient.

Now, let’s suppose that Immigration catches up with the father during a raid on said chicken packing plant. They discover that he is illegally in the country, so they deport him. he says, ‘But wait! What about my wife and baby?” Well, the wife and baby cannot be deported because the baby is what is referred to as an “anchor baby”. The baby cannot be deported because she is an American citizen. The wife cannot be deported because she cannot be separated from her little girl. (The one that was born here, making her a citizen.)

So what happens? The wife applies for welfare, because she can’t work and take care of a six month old, the husband is deported, he slips back over the border three weeks later and goes to work with one of his buddies at another job that somehow doesn’t notice there are six guys working there with the same social security number. The wife stays on welfare, gets a medical card for the baby, and she and her husband just go to the ER whenever they get sick, and still never pay the bill.

Do you see how that scam works now?

Thank you, but I’m not a total idiot–it’s only partial. Yes, I know that people come up and have babies as a way to weasel citizenship. I could be wrong (on, no!), but I was pretty damn sure that illegal aliens are not elligible for welfare. But does the baby change that?

You did not address the issue of immigrants being really sick after cleaning up Ground Zero and not getting health care. That was my main point, not that people don’t weasel up in the SouthWest. I spent the holiday watching The Longest Day (also worthwhile viewing on June 6).

Some of the real-life Allied and Nazi officers who were portrayed in the film served as consultants to the film - see here (scroll down to bottom). One of them was Major Werner Pluskat, the man in the Normandy bunker who first reported the invasion to HQ and had difficulty convincing his superior it was really happening. That was one of the best scenes in the film. The saddest moment was Lt. Colonel Benjamin H. Vandervoort (played by John Wayne) seeing for the first time the aftermath of the carnage at Sainte-Mère-Église.

Yes, I think that the people doing the clean-up at ground zero should be taken care of. However, how many of them were actually illegals, and how many were here on green cards? If they were working here legally, then their employers, whether those be the city, state, or federal governments, or private contractors, are responsible for work related illnesses. If the private contractors have gone Tango Uniform, then eventually .GOV will have to assume the responsibility.

Psychochick, thanks for acknowledging the facts, even though you give no indication that you will be led by them. As for your comment regarding “chickenfeed”, the term is obviously relative. Some people would jump at the chance to make $15, while I regard that as chickenfeed given that I can pull in three times that much. The difference is skills and locating someone who values those skills enough to make it worth my while working for them. Sometimes, people want to have their cake and eat it too, but cannot. There were many unemployed in New Orleans who got jobs when Katrina forced their evacuation to other cities, and are not going back because the environment of corruption in New Orleans made it harder for businessmen who were willing to operate on thinner margins survive while paying protection money and onerous taxes.

I won’t go into the details of the core immorality of the minimum wage, but the problem is that the normal arguments in favor of it indulge in unequal treatment and favoritism that invalidates the morality behind it. Suffice it to say, if you want jobs, shoving a gun in the face of the people who make those jobs isn’t going to get you a lot of cooperation in the United States.

No pain in changing a postion when logic demands if you’re n not married to that beyoch.

Oh yeah, tha fun part: shredding up the idjits that base their conclusions on “I know in my heart of hearts” and not on the pictures, artifacts, spatter patterns,,ya’know,, FULL quotes, real stuff.
    Nature favors the versatile.

What’s with the Hummer? A Prius drives really well and gets 50 mph highway miles. (That’s what I’ll probably get the most grief for. Well, I commute 40 miles, and it was a good choice.)

Because I love Hummers. H-1 and H-2 are beautiful machines! Priuses are, well, FUGLY. Besides, they are not as “safe” as they’re cracked up to be. I WANT a Hummer. I will have the money to afford it. That’s justification enough. Pissing off “watermelons” (green on the outside, red on the inside) is a bonus.

Besides, a red Hummer is gonna look fantastic next to the obnoxious red two-wheeled Yamaha beast already residing here.

Re: welfare. I believe it is immoral to steal money from some (through taxation and threat of violence for disobedience)and to give it to others. Private charities are one thing. And I always help people who may be temporarily down and out—if they deserve it. But government run “charity” is a scam and an abomination. There are many more lazy fucks drawing welfare than you think. But it’s not even the point. The point is that a part of my hard-earned money is expropriated from me without my consent to reward un-productive lives.

I also don’t give two damns what race people drawing welfare are. I oppose it on moral grounds. Morality knows no skin color.
