    This is, of course, horrible. But I find it curious that a modern nation like Syria can’t — or rather, won’t — absorb a group of their Muslim brothers and sisters that constitutes around 6% of the country’s total population.

    Isn’t it the personal obligation of every Muslim to ease the economic hardships of the poor, homeless, and destitute? Isn’t zakah one of the famous five pillars of Islam?

    Surely the faithful of the religion of peace (and sweetness and light and unicorns) would rush to provide for their refugee brethren lest their mothers and children be forced to debase themselves with prostitution! Right?

A country which no longer allows God in (as Boortz calls them) the government indoctrination camps, in some schools is teaching children about Islam. Indeed, some have replaced the Bible with the Koran. One school had “Islam” day, where all the girls had to dress in burkas. Is that what you want for society? NO? Well, it’s coming. Remember the muslim cab drivers who wouldn’t take passengers with seeing-eye dogs, or carrying bottles of booze? I would have fired them on the spot.

    A school in Michigan? I think, is allowing muslim children to leave classes for prayer. Would they do that for Jews/Christians?

    From what I’ve read about the Cubans, yes, they are illegal, but they aren’t out protesting about being allowed to stay here illegally, while the rest of us are working our butts off to support them.

    The ones I know of at least made an effort to learn English and acclimate. Most of the Mexicans don’t seem to.

    My daughter teaches in a predominantly Hispanic school. She was called racist by some of her kids (she’s white). THAT was a mistake. She informed them that they are here illegally, their parents are here illegally, that they get free medical, free meals, free education, and that for them to call Americans racist makes THEM look stupid.

There has clearly been a lot of evil and hideous murders in Communist countries. Do you really equate the Democrats with Stalin? I would argue it’s the Republicans that want to create a police state. There is no question that we have to fight terrorism in this country, but they’ve done a pretty good job with it so far. It’s the Democrats that pushed legislation to secure the ports, which was supposed to be a key thing after 9/11. Now they are working towards screening containers. Bush blocked efforts to regulate chemical companies for enhanced safety, in case someone blew up a chlorine tank, for instance. That could kill 100,000 people if the plant was in a populated area. Sorry to rant, but Democrats as Communists is truly a new concept to me. Too many of them are well-entrenched with business interests. (Not that I hate businesses!)

    And as far as Socialism goes, what about these European countries that have social democracies? Germany has health care for everybody, free college education, and some really competitive large business entities. Their past is just horrible, but I don’t think the present is all that bad. (That’s West Germany–East Germany who had the Stasi is different, and a financial drag on the West). I’ve been there. Most of the people are pretty pleasant and don’t go spouting off about Socialism. They get huge vacations, by the way, too.

Let’s not forget the KosKids with their endless calls for political purges and the shutdown of all voices that don’t agree with thiers.

    Thanks for your post. On the road to is different from being there. Whew. You had me worried there.

    The Democrats are definitely the ones pushing more sociall welfare issues (which I agree with, although I don’t have your experience in ?Denmark?). The US works well for me. I’m a highly educated professional, own a house, have health insurance (which isn’t paying the doctors!!) The US is a great place of oppurtunity for me. I was the first one in my family to go to college, so it’s not like I inherited my opportunities (except for money, but that means both my parents are dead :( ). But for some maid or farm worker, working their asses off, not able to support their families, not having health insurance. I suspect they would be better off in a European country. 18,000 kids under 5 spend the night in homeless shelters in NYC (NYT). And I don’t mind paying taxes to have more a more equitable society. As far as being a democracy, I think it’s better not to have such class disparity. The discrepancy between the ultra-rich and the poor is much greater here than in other countries. (I guess that does make me a bit of a socialist.)

    And as far as being told what to think, the Democrats are not the ones spending half a billion dollars on faith-based marriage counseling (when evangelicals have high divorce rates!). The findings of scientific panels assembled by the National Academy of Sciences (not a left-wing organiization) get edited by political hacks. They are classifying documents that have been publicly available back to the Nixon administration. He’s resigned, but the head of birth control for poor woman was an anti-birth control activist who believed that birth control is demeaning to women. They are the ones spying on us. Definitely spy on the terrorist cells. The previous spying turned out to be counterproductive–when they actually found a terrorist, they knew about him from a previous investigation. Ashcroft and Mueller were ready to resign over the warrantless spying, so it’s not like it’s just a left-wing concern. The FISA court has only ever rejected 4 requests, so it’s not like it’s an evil entity.

    Seriously, these people scare me. The terrorists want to destroy us from without, and they want to destroy our democracy from within. And in the past, anytime you dared disagree with Bush: “You’re in favor of the terrorists! That sent me blood pressure through the roof–amazing I didn’t get a stroke. That might be extreme, and you can argue me to death, but it’s my opinion.

    Actually, now I’m thinking about class problems in Europe. Britain has lots of people living in dangerous slums. France has a large population of immigrants that have not assimilated with violent youth and older immigrants that don’t like seeing their shops destroyed. Sweden is bulging with refugees.

    Read Neal Boortz sometime. I agree with him. The reason the rich keep getting richer is because they make the decisions that make them richer. The poor are poor because they make the decisions which make them poor.

    Case in point: my son is 28, and currently has about 25K in the bank. He wants 50K by next year. I think he’ll do it. He’s shrewd and savvy. My nephew is 32, and doesn’t have a dime to his name, though he has never been without a job.

    The difference: my son works his tail off, makes good investments, shops wisely, got a bachelor’s degree. My nephew spends money like there’s no tomorrow, and never finished school.

    They both made their own choices.

    Interesting answers. The ultrarich of whom you write…do you automatically that they inherited their money? That they don’t DO anything for a living? My husband is worth a considerable amount of money, what with his job, his stock options, investments, etc. His parents were German immigrants. His mother cleaned house; his father was a factory worker. They weren’t rich, but they never wanted for anything.

    My husband has worked hard his whole life. Some of it was in the military, where we did without, so I could stay home and raise the children.

    Tell me why my husband should be penalized…forced to pay for those like my nephew who make bad choices?

    I’m glad that your son is doing well. Working hard sometimes helps you get ahead. My husband is from a city that was devastated by a flood and never recovered. He was on welfare for awhile, then got a job in a [this got edited] store. After various moves, he started at the bottom in a bookstore and now runs one. He’s very bright–only had a year of college because his girlfriend purposely got pregnant when he was 17.

    I got tired of moving for academics after I lost my position and tried to get a normal job. They won’t hire you for anything low-level if you have a PhD. (But I’m good at menial work!) I had to go through the temp agencies for low-wage data entry jobs (it’s kind of soothing).

    Okay , let me get this straight , I have to pay 595 dollars in order to become an American citizen considering that I have to hire an attorney to changed my H1-A working visa into a legal immigrant visa and in the process , I raided my mutual funds to get the amount needed , almost three thousand dollars ( I changed jobs and petitioner) , took a TOEFL AND TSE EXAM which was a requirement for nurses to become legal immigrants ( what was CGFNS FOR and another useless expense ), endured the lines at the local INS office only to be served by rude immigration workers ( mostly hispanics and blacks , the only person there that really helped me was a caucasian female who tried to expedite my green card ) and had to wait for two years to get my green card by doing it the right way and president Bush is telling me and other legal immigrants that we are suckers for obeying the law and he rewards illegal immigrants with a lot of freebies because he and other politicians from both sides of the aisles wanted the votes of those 12 million illegals and their special interest groups .They can all go to hell .

Raising the minimum wage just eliminates low paid jobs, further costing low wage earners starter jobs. Eliminating a job because it is not economic to keep it going doesn’t help the peole minimum wage increases are supposed to “help”. Anyone who can’t do better than $5.15 an hour already either has some serious problem, or needs to reexamine the previous poor choices they have made.

    Statistically, it is true that most of the ultrarich inherited their money. Of course, there are exceptions. I didn’t mean to denigrate your husband. That’s wonderful that he’s done so well! I think Steve Jobs (Apple) is worth every penny of his $647 million stock payout. Bill Gates obviously earned his money (and does wonderful things with it).

    I think it’s reasonable that people that make a ton of money should pay higher taxes. i don’t think they should be penalized for their hard work–there’s got to be a middle ground. I would be happy if they paid the standard 15%. But lots of wealthy people pay NO taxes because of loopholes. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to help people through that are poor no fault of their own. Some people get sick and can’t work. Others lose their jobs. Many vets who never got treatment for PTSD are homeless, as are a large number of people who are mentally ill. It’s probably cost effective to treat the mentally ill, and I think we have a serious obligation to help the vets. In LA, this hospital dropped off a quadrapalegic patient without a wheelchair on skid row who was crawling down the gutter dragging his colostemy bag (LA Times). Is this the kind of country we want to have? (That, of course, is not the fault of anybody on this blog.)

    Actually, I’m wealthy, although not super-rich. The $30,000 interest a year on the mortgage lowers the taxes, but I give away a lot of money to charitable causes. I made (fewer) donations even when I made $5200 a year. So it’s not like I’m preaching about spending on social causes and then not doing it myself.

    Those books weren’t philosophy or politics - they are science fiction. “Stranger in a Strange Land” dates from 1961. Friday is somewhat more modern - 1970’s. My greatest fear is that my two girls will never learn to appreciate “Friday” or “Podkyne of Mars”.

    I wish I could assist with the PTSD and your childhood experiences. The best I can offer is the the Lord is awaiting your arrival, and a better day is coming.

    I have no problem helping those who really need it. For example, I have a cousin who is institutionalized for schizophrenia. He needs to be hospitalized primarily for his own safety. His mom certainly can’t help him (although a few of his siblings could).

    Obviously, there are those who need assistance. It used to be that churches helped out people who needed help, as did neighbors. I have no problem with them. I’m with Wil, however, on those who can take care of themselves, but don’t/won’t. When I had a kidney stone removed, my hospital bill was $54,000. I have always known what I had to do to avoid getting kidney stones. I didn’t do it. Now, you, as a taxpayer get to pay for some of that surgery. Thank you. *evil grin*. However, Tricare only allowed a total of $5,000, of which they paid all but 1400. Hubby’s supplemental insurance picked up the rest.

    Had we not had Tricare or a supplmental, the taxpayers would have had to come up with 54,000. And that’s just ONE person…

Some places have a shortage of labor and some an excess. Maybe Virginia is the former and pays better. Back to the adage: some places have no or few jobs!

    I imagine they are harboring their share. Ahmed Ressam (the Millenium Bomber) was arrested in Port Angeles, WA I think, after coming in from Canada. I believe he had lived in Canada for several years, during which time he aided other terrorists by forging documents, etc. Canada is very “multicultural”.

    By the way, I am not the Canadian with the immigration problem. That would be my friends, who have lived here for 15 years. I got to thinking about it, and I know that at the 12-year mark they had still not gained citizenship status. He worked as an engineer for Boeing. He has also worked at Microsoft (multi talented guy!), and is currently an independent software consultant. His wife was trained as a technical illustrator, but she is now working as a veterinary technician. They have two kids; the youngest was born here and is an American citizen. They are a very nice family!

    Now, you seem like an open-minded individual, so I would like you to consider the fact that people are not static and may change their views over time. Two of my favorite authors were both (in their early days) proponents of communism. I am speaking of Robert Heinlein (the science fiction writer) and Thomas Sowell (the Stanford economist and author). I think you would find their stories interesting. Heinlein’s evolution is especially dramatic. Who was it that said a conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged? Real life has a way of altering ideals.

    The top 50% of all families by wage pay 96% of the federal tax revenue. The top 1% of the wage earners pay almost 37% of all federal taxes collected. So reverse the equation, the lower 50% only pay 4% of all taxes in the US. Yet the socialist swine continually scream for more taxes on the rich (and by extension) they allegedly don’t pay is pure bullshit. The lower 50% pays little or no taxes whatsoever.     I won’t go into who actually pays taxes in this country since JB already covered that, quite well I might add.

    I will sum up my take on the entire tax debate thusly.

    What I earn is mine. Period. No one, especially the government, has any morally or legally justifiable claim on the fruits of my labor. Period.

    The Constitution mandates that the Federal Gubmint only do a very few select things, and in fact it prohibits more than it commands. The things it is mandated to do is to provide for the common defense and to post roads, and little else. It is accepted that the gubmint needs funds to perform certain of the mandated and allowed tasks.

    I will gladly pay taxes for those few things that are allowed or mandated by the Constitution. EVERY OTHER EXPENDITURE is Unconstitutional and illegal. It is not the gubmints business to provide for the specific welfare of someone who has fallen on hard times. It is not their responsibility to provide grants for this or that, or any number of literally millions of other items. They are not a charity or retirement firm.

    Private charities perform better than govt agencies. Private retirement funds return more than 20% more on an investment than does SS.

    Basically, the gubmint needs to get it’s hands out of Americas pocket and let us fend for ourselves. We are better at it and will willingly assist our fellow citizens for batter than the gubmint ever could. Pay for a military to defend the country and thats about it.

    Any body who believes they have a claim on the fruits of some one else’s labor, for any reason, and will use the force of law (I.E. the force of arms) to lay said claim, is a Socialist. Period.

    You’ll love this: (I’m semi-veggie, so it’s not like I think vegans are evil). This couple raised their baby vegan giving it soy milk! It died at 6 weeks old, and the parents are facing very serious charges (NYT). Babies need fats for their nervous systems to develop.

    Actually, I do really hate Halliburton. I don’t think they are responsible for the war. They charge $100 to wash a load of clothes! I know someone who works for them in the US, and they treat their workers like dogshit.

    So just because the feds don’t have a certain power doesn’t mean the state can’t get ya.

    I don’t want to put words in anyone’s mouth, but I think we all understand that there must be some way for the government to raise money, and for better or worse taxes is the way a lot of that gets done. I think most arguments over taxes are primarily over the percentage and what the government is doing with our money, not that fact that they have to be paid.

    I think most arguments over taxes are primarily over the percentage and what the government is doing with our money, not that fact that they have to be paid.

    Kind of my point. I said that the gubmint does need money, and I have no problem paying taxes to provide for that. My main point was that the VAST majority of Federal expenditures are unconstitutional in that the Constitution does not grant the Feds the power to be involved in them. And I know that the States can delve into a lot of those areas.

    I am well aware of all that Artcicle 8 states, the military and posting roads bit was just an allegorical oversimplification for brevity’s sake.

    I believe that an income tax, especially a withholding tax as currently set up, is not only illegal it’s immoral. I would gladly pay a national sales tax. I have control over my taxation rate by how much I consume, and it is TRULY fair in that everyone pays the same rate based on their consumption, not an inciome bracket or how good their accountants are. I would also be even happier if that revenue was used only for what is constitutionally allowed.

    Then you need to re-read the history of the Revolution. Remember, we survive off of what we earn. If an entity takes the product of our sweat, then they are taking the means for us to survive.     May I ask you a question PC, in all your reading and studies have you ever read The Federalist Papers? Or “Democracy in America” by Alexis De Toqueville? Have you ever studied teh Declaration and the Constitution to understand the type of Republic the Founders left us? Do you understand just what kind of a radical proposition our Republic is? What our founding principles are? I ask because that is what we live by. That is our core beliefs.

    Study those and you’ll have a lot better understanding of where our belief system comes from.

I never said tax the rich a huge amount and drive them away, like they do in Britain. However, a good accountant can result in no taxes being paid, which is not fair to working class and middle class people who have to pay taxes. I will think more about taxation, given the comments that have been made, and I might actually modify my view. That has happened here. I do tweak my opinions when I get new information. However, I’m not automatically going to change my position without more thought. I pay taxes, too, and my property taxes are a bitch. However, I think of the good things it goes to.

    I don’t only reply to posts that are nice. I just prefer some degree of civility rather than getting reamed over an intellectual point.

    I think the business tax breaks are a complicated, case by case issue. Sometimes they are really awesome and bring in new companies that invest in plants and hire lots of people. Yeah! In other cases, the tax breaks are so large that they eat up any of the money the city/county would have made from the workers, and I think that’s bad.

    I don’t have some party line I hew to. I agree with most of the points of the Democratic Party, but it’s not like I go to that talking points thing. I try to get my info from fairly intellectual sources.

    I’m also unaware of not taking posts seriously because I don’t like their tone. Perhaps I do and am unaware of it. Does any example come to mind?

    The only problem with the fair tax as far as I’m concerned Skyechild is that the 16th Amendment needs to be repealed. Unless thats done first they can still re-institute an income tax.     I understand that. Truth be told, neither party is going to be very willing to give up that kind of control, but it would be MORE likely to happen under a Republican congress. It’s a great idea. Some states, like Texas (and another I can’t remember) don’t have state income taxes, and they seem to do quite well on just the sales tax.

    I don’t think being shocked by the Prius thing is at all unreasonable. I’ve read about them from a huge number of different sources and had not heard of the nickle mining issue. Getting 50 mpg highway and having few emissions really does seem like a good thing. It does not seem unreasonable to think that it’s a positive car for the pocketbook and the environment (yes, I’m a troll). The site seemed reliable, but I will do a little more digging before I totally accept it as fact, but I’m almost convinced. Not to go on endlessly. My point is that this was a reasonable conclusion to have, lacking that one bit of data. My opinion was not based on feelings–before I started speeding, I really was getting 50 mpg.

    I feel strongly about a lot of things, but I really do try to have information to back up my opinions. I may be highly sensitive, but I’m not touchy-feelly intellectually. I’m very analytical, and I’m an information junkie. You should see the living room. My god–looks like a newspaper factory exploded. I guess there are some things I take for granted that you guys don’t–like paying income tax. To me, it’s a normal part of life. I think it’s good for me to be exposed to these alternate points of view, even if I don’t agree with them.

    There are a world of other sources piling up in my living room, but my time is limited. I need an excessive amount of sleep because of the meds, so that limits my time even further. I’m lucky if I make it through the papers. I think the NYT is reliable. What have they done in the past that was evil?

    I’m tired and it’s late, so one example (of many that I’m sure my fellow Rotties will bring up) was their detailed explanation of how we were tracking down and cutting off the terrorists funding. By running that story they seriously undercut our ability to fight the Long War. And they knew it. There was no reason to run the story, other than putting a Pulitzer above our nations security.

    If the same editorial board had been around in June 0f ‘44, they would have reported that we were going to land in Normandy, and not Pas De Calais, with full details of our deception plan to make the Germans think we were hitting Pas De Calais. And they would have had no regret that more American soldiers would have died and that the invasion would fail, as long as they got the scoop.

    All of you in California are gonna be in hurtin’ status come time to get rid of your flourescent light bulbs. MOST people won’t expend the time/effort/money to dispose of them according to regs, and all that mercury will be seeping into the ground for years to come…THAT should give the environmentalists pause…

It should be pretty easy to take a light bulb there, although I suspect some lazy bastards would just blow it off. The fluorescent light bulbs do save a hell of a lot of money. Not to be rude, but I understand the dichotomy and don’t need a lecture on the law of unintended consequences, when I am well aware of the mercury issue. (Although–I’m abnormal [surprise]–I’m a scientist, so the mercury thing might have registered more with me more than with a normal person.)

    I’m sure the dealer could deal with the Prius battery. They are supposed to last the life of the car. I don’t think people would be running around trying to dispose of their battery. You kind of have to deal with the dealer, since most mechanics don’t know how to deal with the hybrid system. That’s a downside.

    That was weird–a chopper with a search light just flew really low over our house. Except for some car breakins, and a meth dealer, this is a really crime-free area.

    In Tucson, with rampant crime, there would be some incident near our house, and I would want to take the Doberman and go check it out, but was always discouraged. Usually, I don’t listen to my husband, but sometimes his advice is wise.

    Actually, now I’m thinking about class problems in Europe. Britain has lots of people living in dangerous slums. France has a large population of immigrants that have not assimilated with violent youth and older immigrants that don’t like seeing their shops destroyed. Sweden is bulging with refugees.

    This is partly or wholely the result of the economic distortions attendant on socialist democracy. Governments are horrible at picking the ‘right’ place to spend money. What usually happens is that vast sums are spent on projects that, with the best will in the world, exacerbate the social problems they were supposed to cure.

    Successful government means intervening in the economy when it’s essential, rather than when you can. Generally, people are well able to take care of themselves, and make logical decisions about how to invest their money (that’s why we call them adults, not children).

    Britain has gone very much to seed as a result of warped ideas on law and order (the criminal is a victim, too), immigration (we don’t mind if you come here and can’t support yourself - we’ll take care of accommodation, food, and health care), and the punishment of entrepreneurship (every employer is guilty of something, ‘luxury’ taxes etc.).

    It’s not communism; it’s probably not even socialism. I think it’s sort of a generalised, amorphous post modern sense of busy-bodiness combined with a populist view of economics, science and international relations. There’s very little logic to some of the things that are now done in Britain.

    I’ve never been to the US; however, some of the laws I read about smack of the same kind of lack of thinking. Illegal immigrants are victims; well, yes… I suppose they are. But they’re illegal, and the legal citizenry has a valid right and expectation not to be taxed for the betterment of people involved in illegal activities. Arrest them, and let them make a case. If they can’t prove that returning to their homeland will result in some very unusual dangers (execution, torture) then they should be deported.

    When you welcome illegal immigrants with open arms, it very much sends a signal to others who are considering illegal immigration.

    The biggest weakness of the Prius vs. Hummer article I think was the expected number of miles each vehicle would get. They based the figures on an expected 100,000 miles for the Prius and an expected 300,000 miles for the Hummer. I’d be curious to know how many miles the average Prius and Hummer actually gets rather than is “expected” (the articles word) to get. If the actual miles is different than the expected miles, that might throw off the results a bit.

    Personally, I’d be surprised if a Hummer gets 3 times the miles as a Prius, but maybe it does, I don’t know.

    And while books are getting recommended, I recommend The Law by Frederic Bastiat. It’s short, a quick read, so simple and so right. Everyone should read this book. Here is a sample for those who haven’t read it:

    “Life, faculties, production — in other words, individuality, liberty, property — this is man. And in spite of the cunning of artful political leaders, these three gifts from God precede all human legislation, and are superior to it. Life, liberty, and property do not exist because men have made laws.     I could go on forever, every paragraph of this book is the money quote.

    I have met people like that and believe me it is hard to dealt with them on any sort of level. When we lived in Northern California, we were constantly harassed by people who lived on my mother in law’s ranch about Hitler and other topics. We got together with my husband’s brother and made a list of what the Nazis came up with that was really similar to what liberals go off about today. The person we responded to was speechless for a little while.
