Having just finished microbiology (I got an A!! WOOT!!) this story scares the crap out of me. TB is some nasty shite, and when an idiot gets a drug resistant strain it’s even scarier.

    And may I say…FIRST!! heehee

Just another too keep all those unvaccinated illegals out who only want to come here to infect the people that Americans don’t want to infect. We’re seeing all kinds of infectious diseases that have been gone for decades suddenly returning in drug resistant strains.

As for Mr. Speaker…he’s an elitist putz. Having been warned NOT to travel, and having a father-in-law who just happens to be a CDC microbiologist specializing in TB (who happens to stridently denies that his son-in-law contracted it from him or his facilities…hmmmm), he decides that he knows better than the health authorities, and puts hundreds of people in danger. Self-centered jackass.

If anyone else he came in contact with comes down with this…I hope they sue his ass into the stone age.

OK, this is just a wild-ass hypothesis so go easy on the straitjackets, but: What if it’s not TB?

Consider: TB is a highly fastidious organism, meaning it only grows under an extremely narrow range of conditions. It’s also slow-growing. To identify the organism by culture takes about 8 weeks, and evaluating antibiotic resistance takes another 8. He wasn’t in Greece long enough to do that; and, with all due respect to our feta-munching friends, I have doubts whether Greece has effective facilities to do so anyway.

Second, TB does not incubate or develop all that fast. There would be no need to rush home, let alone to a specialized facility, with the speed an urgency Mr. Speaker displayed. Sure, it’s not something to ignore, but a few days would not have made *that* much difference.

Third, the mayor of the town where Mr. Speaker and his ‘wife’ stayed has reported that no ceremony was conducted and no papers related to the marriage were filed. That’s an awful long way to go for a wedding that doesn’t happen.

Fourth, testing the other passengers for TB at this point makes no sense, except as a PR move; TB incubates far too slowly to return positive results (at least reliably) this soon after exposure.

Fifth, Speaker is absolutely correct that non-symptomatic TB is not contagious, certainly not by casual proximity.

So, what could it be? I’ll let you guys chew on that for a day or so.

SkyeChild, as the parent of a 7 year old with one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders-Aspergers Syndrome, I can tell you that when I started to look into the statistics on Autism, there are some interesting correlations between vacinations and the onset of autism symptoms. I appreciate your skepticism, but I can’t be quite so dismissive of a connection between the two.

    Blackiswhite,

I’m sorry to hear about your child. I’ve worked with autistic kids and it can be hard, I can’t imagine how much more difficult it is to be a parent of one.

I’m not in favor of forced vaccinations, I can see the utility in some cases where the benefits are provable and the risks negligible but I would set the bar very high for proving that. I think parents should be given the information and allowed to decide for themselves whether to have their children get them.

That being said, I think what this jerkoff did was beyond irresponsible, he has to be the most narcissistic butt-wipe I’ve heard of in a long time, and I’ve been reading up on Shrillary and friends.

Colleen Kelley, president of the union that represents customs and border agents, declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but said “public health issues were not receiving adequate attention and training” within the agency.

How much training does a person need to follow written guidance? Maybe this fool needs a class in reading comprehension.

The inspector ran Speaker’s passport through a computer, and a warning - including instructions to hold the traveler, don a protective mask in dealing with him, and telephone health authorities - popped up, officials said.

That’s pretty clear cut to me and the necessary training I received to comprehend that message was back when I was in the 6th grade. Now, they removed him from his duties but he’s still drawing a paycheck.

    NevadaDailySteve,

To not get a child vaccinated, is, in my opinion, negligence and a form of child abuse. I don’t know how old you are, but smallpox at times decimated whole villages and towns. Child with polio were crippled for life, some confined to iron lungs.

I’ve had this argument with my best friend’s daughter, who says, but…we don’t GET those diseases anymore. Of course not…cause we’ve all been vaccinated and the strains have died out. Now that people are not vaccinating their children, I expect to see an increase once again of infectious diseases.

I’d rather have my child risk autism than polio or smallpox.

I have read somewhere that the use of vaccines and better diagnosis of autism came about at the same time. I would rather have a less than 1% chance of a child with a problem than a child on a respirator asking me why did you not prevent this from happening to me. I personally would not vaccinate my child against hepatitis B since there would be no reason for them to come into contact with it unless they had a job in the health care field nor would I vaccinate against chicken pox because it is a much milder thing as a kid than an adult and vaccine immunities tend to wear off with age. I think that the new vaccine for papilloma virus (causes cervical cancer) is a good thing but it should not be government mandated. It is up to me whether or not I give my girls such a thing.

Were the chicken pox vaccine available when my children were small, knowing what I know now, I probably would have had them vaccinated. The sucky part about chicken pox is that those who have the disease are very likely to get shingles when they get older. Shingles AREN’T fun.

major vaccines like polio and such should be manditory, other stuff could be recommended but not necessisary. I will not take a yearly flu shot or other yearly vaccines because of fear of what it will do to my immune system in the long run. As to the shingles, I worked with a guy that got chicken pox in his late 30’s and it went straight into shingles, damagaing nerves in his leg and foot. He now has a foot that is permanently numb and must wear a brace to keep it in a normal position. Would a vaccine have protected him? Only if lifetime immunity could be guaranteed which it is often not. Yes he could have gotten shingles later with the same devistating result but then again maybe not.

I’m not ready to throw this guy under the bus even though he is a lawyer.

I am sure there is more to this story than the CDC is willing to admit to. I am more than willing to believe the lawyer when he said that the CDC told him there was no risk of spreading the disease. There is a passive and active phase of TB. More than likely this gentleman was not able to infect anyone else.

There is a far greater risk of acquiring TB from the hordes of illegal aliens than from this fellow. This is a tempest in a teapot spun by the CDC because they are trying to cover their asses in the unlikely event he was able to transmit this strain to someone else.

I would like to know how he acquired the infection in the first place. It’s quite suspicious that the father-in-law does research on this exact strain, no? The CDC is run by a bunch of weasels as corrupt as the IRS. I am sure what they are saying publicly is completely different that what they told this lawyer in private. I hope he sues the CDC for violating HIPAA regulations.

Actually, you are right–there has been a rise in infectious diseases–whooping cough for instance. Measles can be fatal. Ironically, the vaccine/autism link has been thoroughly discredited scientifically, but lives on in the media. Actually, it wasn’t the vaccine per se, it was the thimerosal used as a preservative (it contains a small amount of mercury). I could be wrong, but I think they have gone away from using it in vaccines.

Please go and read my post to you to the Tom Morrow thread. Part is an apology, part is pointing out that something you thought was snarky was actually an attempt to support your view, part is that you were right about something else. Then there is a diatribe (not very rude) that you really should read. I had posted my full name and credentials, so you verify my background if you wanted. However, our great Emporer was kind enough to save me from my foolishness and deleted the personal info.

Congrats on the microbiology A! Isn’t it just the coolest subject? I took a lot of micro classes–ecology, physiology and did research on them for years (not scary, dangerous human work, just with plants).

However, whenever I get sick with a bacterial infection, I think how dare this prokaryotic organism with no consciousness infect me–a sentient human. I never get very far with that approach.

Great, now my sister and I have something to look forward to (not). I got the chicken pox when I was 4, and my sister got them when she was 1 1/2 (from me).

In regards to mandatory vaccines, the Army has poked and prodded me so many times that there’s very little chance of me getting sick (measles, mumps, rubella, polio, hepatitis A and B, tetanus, diphtheria, meningitis, typhoid, yellow fever, malaria, and an annual flu shot).
Typhoid, yellow fever, malaria, and hepatitis A I got because my superiors advised me to keep my vaccines current (some soldiers at my unit were going to Panama and/or Egypt for humanitarian missions such as New Horizons and Bright Star, respectively).

As to Andrew Speaker, he should have taken his doctor’s advice and postpone the wedding. It could have waited until he got his health in order. If I were his wife, I would much rather have waited to marry him then to possibly be a young widow.

    psychochick,
Yep, they still give the anthrax series. The program has been suspended twice, once for availability of the vaccine and once for “additional” research. Big news when both of them happened, but not a peep when a few weeks back they told all the members at my last base that they would begin taking the series again.

When I got mine, there wasn’t any real illness involved, just a slight fever and pain at the injection site. Pain like someone stuck a golf ball under my skin and left it there!

And I definately am not in favor of being forced to take them. However I do think that if the only thing you are afraid of is autism then just make sure you don’t get the mercury version. I think however there are other things that can go wrong and you shouldn’t treat these like the equivalent of taking nyquill. Of course I also think people take nyquill and other stuff too quickly also…

Amen, brother! (’Course, I’ve started too many days with 800mg Ibuprofen, (consequence of handling 100+ lb weights with Degenerative Joint Disease..))

    LittleRott,

What? No Cholera? I recall that and Yellow Fever both hurt like a Hillary speech.

    And PC,

Since this seems, finally to be your topic — IIRC, Anthrax was either the first or second vaccine developed by Pasteur. so why no trouble then, and so much controversy now? Inquiring minds want to know.

    Hi Rurik
Do you realize you have the annoying habit of asking excellent questions? I can’t believe that you knew that Pasteur developed a vaccine to anthrax. You rule!

I had to pull out one of my moldy texts, because I did not know. There are 2 different ways of making vaccine:
    1) attenuated live organism (disabled so it can’t cause disease)
    2) antigen from the organism–some cellular agent that will provoke an immune response

Pasteur used attenuated anthrax in his animal studies. That can be a risky strategy to use in humans, so they use an antigen from the organism. I wonder if the adjuvant could be the problem–it’s an extra compound added to boost the immune response. I really don’t know why there were toxicity issues with the military anthrax vaccines, but I will look into it (I’m kind of obsessive). It could be that the antigen they use is toxic. Not tonight, but within a week or so.

I am taking you up on your kind offer and have sent our great Emporer an e-mail. Let me warn you: I am voluble! I will let you know there when I find out more information.

If someone else wants more info, I could either post in the current thread or else have you e-mail me. Rurik gets my real address, but I keep a special one for Rottie stuff.

Nope, no cholera. Just a ton of other vaccines.

    Let’s go over the facts:

    * Speaker knew he had multi-drug resistant TB before he left the US.
    * With any TB diagnosis, regardless of severity, a ‘highly educated, highly intelligent’ person would not get on a airplane and risk the lives of other people. Given his actions he becomes highly morally responsible for anything that happens to anyone he infected.
    * Speaker was encouraged not to leave the country, both for his safety as well as the safety of the traveling public.
    * Speaker left the country anyway, possibly exposing innocent people to multi-drug resistant TB.
    * While in Europe Speaker learned that he had extensively drug-resistant TB.
    * While in Europe Speaker was told to present himself to Italian medical authorities, both for his safety as well as the safety of the traveling public.
    * Speaker traveled throughout Europe anyway, possibly exposing innocent people to extensively drug-resistant TB.
    * Speaker then flew another long trans-Atlantic flight into Canada because he knew US authorities were looking for him. From there he quietly slithered back to Atlanta like a thief in the night.
    * Andrew Speaker repeatedly placed the enjoyment of his wedding above the safety of innocent travelers. This was felony selfish.

“I’m a very well-educated, successful, intelligent person,” he is quoted as saying.

“Just another example of the ‘Me First, Screw You’ attitude in this country,” I have been quoted as saying.

If this fool had been infected by someone else with TB on the flight he would sue the socks off of the airline, the passenger, the flight crew, the food vendor, Budweiser, the pretzel vendor on the plane, Brooks Brothers for making a suit that is not TB resistant, the Italian government, the airport authority, the hospital where the said passenger was diagnosed, the doctor, the WHO, the CDC, and last but not least the donkey the passenger rode to the hospital.

Now just imagine if your spouse/child/grandchild sat next to Andrew Speaker on one of his oh-so-important flights.

Now just imagine if your spouse/child/grandchild dies because Andrew Speaker thought it was far more important to risk exposing hundreds of innocent people to extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis than it was to postpone his miserable wedding for a time.

This degree of selfishness should not go unpunished.
