It would’ve saved a lot of paper, ink and electrons if the New York Slimes had limited their latest failed attempt at coherent editorial thought to that. Headlined “A Failure of Leadership”, their plaintive cry about evil nativist right-wingers goes on:

The immigration compromise collapsed on the floor of the Senate Thursday night. Many of its hard-line foes are celebrating, but their glee is vindictive and hollow.

You’re kidding us, right? We haven’t had such high octane, rich, filling and downright sinfully good vindictiveness in a long time! Well, not since reading the latest stock report on the NYT, anyways. It’s like mainlining pureed filet mignon in a rich, cabernet/mushroom sauce, man!

They have blocked one avenue to an immigration overhaul while offering nothing better,

Other than enforcing the laws of our nation already on the books, all approximately 2,000,000 pages of them, but hey, that doesn’t amount to much of anything.

thwarting bipartisanship to satisfy their reflexive loathing for amnesty,

“Bipartisanship” meaning “giving the Democrats everything they want”, of course. And yes, we do reflexively loathe amnesty. It sort of goes counter to that whole concept we know as “rule of law”, under which illegal actions have consequences. But, given the New York Times proud tradition of flouting our nation’s laws, particularly the ones regarding providing aid and comfort to our enemies during times of war, we can certainly understand why you’re wholly opposed to such Neanderthal judicial principles.

which they define as anything that helps illegal immigrants get right with the law.

But they can already get right with the law, just like any other class of criminals. All they have to do is to pay the consequences, as proscribed by law, for their transgression and then, once they’ve done their time for burglarizing our nation, evading taxes, forging federal documents and defrauding social services, then can spend their bus ride out of the country rejoicing in the fact that their dues have been paid in full, their debt to society has been eradicated and they have a clean slate from which to start.

Just like any other class of criminals.

The tragedy is that the compromise bill was written to bring these restrictionists along, with punitive, detestable provisions that many supporters of comprehensive reform agreed to endorse for the sake of a “grand bargain.”

“Punitive, detestable provisions” such as buying their way out of all of the crimes listed above with a fine of $5,000 (that they’d never end up paying anyway), a path to citizenship that they’d never once lifted a finger to earn the legal way and waiting for 24 grueling hours before being issued their automatic, stay-as-long-as-you-like Z-visa.

How — NAZI-LIKE!!!

The bill was badly flawed but fixable, as long as there was the possibility of leadership and courage in Congress.

But obstruction happened. Republican amendments, designed to shred the compromise, happened.

Evil Republicans like Dorgan and Obama.

Jeff Sessions wanted to deprive legalized immigrants — yes, legal residents — of the earned income tax credit, a path out of poverty for millions.

Former illegal immigrants, you mean. Oh yes, it sounds awfully nice to term them “legal residents” instead, since that would be what they’d be after their 24-hour drive-thru “ask no questions” Z-visa had been approved, but we’re not as think as you stupid we are. And how could that wicked, heartless man suggest that thieves who’d been robbing us blind for years shouldn’t be eligible for further handouts from the American taxpayers whose jobs and wages they’d been appropriating for themselves?

NAZI!

For once, the New York Slimes and Jorge Arbusto are on the same page. He must be so proud.

John Cornyn wanted to strip confidentiality protections for immigrants who apply for legal status, making them too frightened to leave the shadows.

We hear that sunshine is abundant in Mexico. Hardly any shadow at all.

Jim DeMint just wanted to kill the bill, so he voted for a volatile amendment whose substance he disagreed with. “If it hurts the bill, I’m for it,” he said.

Add Mr Demint to our Christmas card list, because he has surely earned it.

Leadership was desperately needed to stop Republicans from dragging the bill off one of its pillars — the one that would put 12 million people on a path to legal status.

12 million criminals, you mean. And what kind of leadership might do the trick of subverting the nation’s laws in spite of the wishes of a majority of the American people? The same kind of leadership that the New York Slimes’ Walter Duranty just couldn’t get enough of fellating back in the 30s, and thank G-d that we don’t have it here.

It didn’t show up. Republicans who should have been holding their party and the deal together — President Bush, minority leader Mitch McConnell, Senator John Kyl — failed utterly.

Now this is truly a thing of beauty. Usually, the New Duranty Times are claiming that Bush is the reincarnation of Hitler, and here they’re bitching about him not being totalitarian enough. If nothing else, you have to admire the communist bastards for being able to hold so many internally contradictory views at the same time without their heads exploding.

The anti-immigrant hard-core — no amnesty today, no amnesty tomorrow, no amnesty ever — must not be allowed to hold the nation hostage.

Hyperbole alert, and trust us: We KNOW hyperbole when we see it. We wrote the book on the subject. We’d like to point out, however, that it’s not so hard to “hold a nation hostage” when the majority of it are on your side.

Like nativists of generations past, they think the country is being Latinized, and they fear it.

Just like those nativists of old who feared the Latinization of the country by the Germans, Polish and Irish. Listen, Mr. Editor of the Walter Duranty Times, would it kill you to open a history book every once in a while? We hear that versions with lots of pretty pictures and extra-large typeface are available.

The country is changing, but the way it always has, absorbing newcomers, shaping and being shaped by them, inexorably turning them, their children and grandchildren into Americans.

That was back when insisting that people speak English wasn’t a hate crime and you didn’t have to wait on the phone to find out which number you had to press to get English in the first place.

Globalization has accelerated and complicated that upheaval, and decades of federal dithering have made things messy and chaotic.

Those damn federal ditherers creating chaos out of the sweet, coherent order of a nation consisting of three gazillion ethnically entrenched sub-groups constantly bickering over who gets the biggest entitlements. “E Pluribus Unum”, our Imperial Arse.

Restoring order will be wrenchingly difficult, but it must be done. The country cannot leave an unlawful, chaotic system to fester,

You’re absolutely right. It’s time we started enforcing our own laws and demand that criminals pay the consequences of their crimes.

with legal immigration channels clogged,

Good idea. How about we start expediting the processing of people who played by the rules, rather than clogging up the system with handing out freebies to 12 million free-loaders who don’t give a wet burrito about our nation’s laws?

families split apart,

They should’ve thought of that before they broke the law. Or are we going to let out every single criminal in our jails who has a family?

crops rotting

Damn. We seem to have heard that argument before. Except, back then it was cotton we were talking about.

and state and local governments dreaming up ways to punish 12 million people whose identities are unknown to the authorities,

12 million people whose identities are unknown because they broke the law by sneaking into the country, forging federal documents or both. The poor bastards.

and who aren’t leaving, no matter what Congress does.

They aren’t? Why, color us helplessly optimistic, but we have a feeling that if they were to be denied welfare benefits, education and jobs, they might just be leaving voluntarily in short order, and all of that would require nothing more than enforcing the laws already on the book. We wouldn’t even have to bother rounding up people in the middle of the night and bus them off to the border, they’d be paying for their own tickets.

Besides, murder has been illegal since before the Old Testament, yet people still get murdered, no matter what Congress or anybody before them have done, so we guess we should start thinking of a way to get murderers “right with the law” as well. Say, maybe a $1,000 fine?

We cannot simply fortify a wall while continuing to extract cheap labor from cowering workers who risk death to get here.

But extracting cheap labor from a permanent Democrat-voting underclass legally here is just dandy?

Inaction on immigration carries a brutally high price, but those on the phobic right are willing to mortgage their country’s future to pay it.

At least we’ll be getting a mortgage. We won’t be giving the whole kaboodle away for free. Not to mention that the above quoted sentence is nonsense from one end to the other, unless our country’s future depends on a new group of underpaid slaves living on the Democrat plantation while systematically destroying everything that our nation was founded upon.

Which, of course, it does. This IS the New Duranty Times, after all.

A core group of lawmakers has shown a greater faith in their country than that. They must keep fighting, knowing that on the central principles — restoring the rule of law,

By utterly abandoning any enforcement thereof, letting criminals off scot free as long as the ruling class perceive a benefit from doing so. The rest of you peons will just have to suck it up and pay your dues. Hey, it’s the “rule of law” according to the Stalin-swallowing editors of the Walter Duranty Times!

enhancing security,

By leaving the borders wide open to every Jack, Joe and Jill who cares to cross it.

easing the pressure on the border and giving immigrants hope — Americans are with them.

Just in case you Neanderthal Right Wing Nazis still believing in a nation of laws were in doubt: You’re not even AMERICAN!

Any jackoff capable of sneaking through a wide-open border, on the other hand, is more American than you Nazi Bigots will EVER be!

According to the New York Slimes, that is.

And President Jorge Arbusto.

The stinkin’ fuckbucket owners, editors and writers of the Slimes, needs to read the below, but it would probably send them all into apoplexy…

Where immigrants, or the sons of immigrants, do not heartily and in good faith throw in their lot with us, but cling to the speech, the customs, the ways of life, and the habits of thought of the Old World which they have left, they thereby harm both themselves and us. If they remain alien elements, unassimilated, and with interests separate from ours, they are mere obstructions to the current of our national life, and, moreover, can get no good from it themselves. In fact, though we ourselves also suffer from their perversity, it is they who really suffer most.

It is an immense benefit to the European immigrant to change him into an American citizen. To bear the name of American is to bear the most honorable of titles; and whoever does not so believe has no business to bear the name at all, and, if he comes from Europe, the sooner he goes back there the better. Besides, the man who does not become Americanized nevertheless fails to remain a European, and becomes nothing at all.

The immigrant cannot possibly remain what he was, or continue to be a member of the Old World society. If he tries to retain his old language, in a few generations it becomes a barbarous jargon; if he tries to retain his old customs and ways of life, in a few generations he becomes an uncouth boor. He has cut himself off from the Old World, and cannot retain his connection with it; and if he wishes ever to amount to anything he must throw himself heart and soul, and without reservation, into the new life to which he has come.

    Theodore Roosevelt

Vindictive? No. Just a sense of relief that maybe this one battle of many in the war against invasion is coming out on the side of the good guys.

Hollow? Probably, since the government is still full of stupid people, bad people, and stupid, bad people, and they’ll keep trying to ruin America.

This whole amnesty thing scares the hell out of me. It is the straw that broke the camels back.

Up to this point I was thinking that the pols were just a bunch of rich bozos having a good time being spoiled brats in public (similar to a clown show but far, FAR more dangerous). The show passed utterly disgusting at transonic speeds with this amnesty crap.

Now I am afraid, very afraid. The disconnect between reality, the people of this great country and common sense appears to be complete for the ruling elite (etc.).

The soapbox is just fine and allows us to express our frustration, do the pols hear it? Maybe, probably not - they appear not to live in the same universe as the rest of us. No one making $130,000+ a year (or whatever it is) and all the perks and graft, greed and corruption they can grab while the folks charged with oversight do the “nod, nod, wink, wink” thing have *anything* in common with me or anyone I know.

Somehow I think this whole thing worked better back when it was a duty and not a paying job. We got people who cared about the country (vs what they could grab) and they had to get the job done and get the hell home to run their business rather than dicking around endlessly with more and more ludicrous laws for fun, subversion and profit. we never really did defeat the communist in detail, did we?

The ballot box? Living in WA state, I’m pretty sure that is totally corrupt at this point.

What is left? It depresses me beyond measure to see this amnesty thing get anything other than the proposers charged with sedition and charged as traitors. And MUCH more.

Are these people (and I use that term kindly for it surely is not how I feel) truly representing the majority of people in this country? If so where is left to move to? I’m starting to feel like this is 1939 in Germany and I’m a Jew (may be, no one ever accounted for the 10 lost tribes :-).

Sorry folks but the utter stupidity of our “leaders” is starting to get to me… (understatement warning).

What an unmitigated, idiotic, kool-aid slurping, short-sighted, dimwitted, meme-muttering, intellectually impaired, treasonous mental midget. The ninth circle of hell, and the incessant cackling of Cornholio, who awaits him there, is really too good for him.

It is time for a good old-fashioned pitchfork and torch rousting of this ‘journalist’ so he can see just how out of touch with reality he really is, at least until he either realizes the error of his ways or finishes his descent into delusion. I find that I really don’t care which.

    My personal RCOB moment:

The country is changing, but the way it always has, absorbing newcomers, shaping and being shaped by them, inexorably turning them, their children and grandchildren into Americans.

I can’t question his patriotism. He doesn’t have any. He is too busy pissing on the sacrifices of those who came before us by trying to give it away. There’s a saying in my business: “You don’t value what you don’t pay for.” While this is not entirely true, since I saw what their service cost both my grandfathers even if they never once complained about it. People flock to this country because it offers soemthing better than what they are leaving behind. In turn, if they have something to contribute, we let them in and don’t ask them to leave behind all that they are, but we do want them to become like us in the ways that matter: speak the language, pay taxes, join the body politic and acknowledge the fact that YOU came HERE because it is better than what you left behind, rather than try to establish this place as an annex of the festering shithole you abandoned, and raise your children to be Americans, preferrably unhyphenated ones. Bastards like this, who want to take this thing of value and give it away, slapping those who did it the right way and pissing on those who were born with it because its toooo Haaardd to enforce the law, or because it would beeee mmmeeeannn, or because it would be politically expedient are worthy only of contempt. The kind that marches into swank penthouse offices in Manhattan and drags the offender kicking and screaming like a certain useless, slutty heiress, all the way to street level, where a crowd waits with a rope already installed on the nearest street light. As long as people like this shape “opinion”, we are on a collision course with the destruction of our great nation.

But that would be discriminating against a protected class here.

I know nothing provable and can’t ask. If the police can’t ask I’m pretty sure I can’t without a very good and expensive lawyer and more money than I have to play the game and have a prayer of winning. The state would be using my (and your) tax dollars to finance the fight.

I do know that I almost need to speak spanish / farsi / etc. at almost any fast food place I go to anymore lest I get a bag of whatever rather than what I ordered. It has reached the point where if I see “of spanish descent” I just leave anymore. I really feel bad about the people that came here legally and did it right, but I have no idea which is which and I can’t find out. Yeah, sorta real tired of it.

I hope she isn’t going to UW, we lived in that area for a few years (makes this area we live in now look wonderful) and I wouldn’t wish that area on jimmah kartah or even the klintoons.

I completely understand the desire. Taxes went up on our apartment building last year (28 units) by $30K (going up again I understand) and the landlord is charging for *everything* now and replacing only what he has to (decent sort for a landlord, but he paid more than it was worth to get into the “get rich in real estate” thing).

We are now paying more for water than power with the ability of the people he got to put in individual data collection devices (they maintain the counts) and bill us at about 25% above going rate for water / sewer / garbage for the privilege of billing us, but we are fortunate, we were told, the shitty of scabattle says they could be charging us a lot more.

The area has changed from this being the only apartment on the block to only having two, at last count, single family dwellings - lots of construction noise and filth. We don’t dust here, we shovel.

Parking has become a nightmare since all the new condos and apartments do not provide for parking and the streets here have become generally one lane between everyone parked on the streets, even more of a problem since people use it for a bypass for all the lights on 99. Crime, noise (at all hours) and general obnoxiousness have all gotten much worse. Cops are useless (or so overworked as to be useless). Fire an police sirens at all hours of the day and night (they use Stone Ave. as a bypass too).

Every time they want to establish a new social program or just need more money to squander my net goes down and expenses go up, perhaps gates can afford it here, I can’t any more. Hope the mayor enjoys his new and expensive office outfitting, sorta like fiddling while Rome burns IMO… With the homeless panhandlers I won’t even go into scabattle any more and it looks like they are moving out here.

Quick aside re: homeless panhandlers, my roomie when she came down with MS lost her job and everything and ended up on the streets with those people (and managed to crawl out of it, even as physically screwed up as she is couldn’t stand that environment). According to her, those “poor panhandlers” make more a year than most working stiffs especially since they don’t pay taxes on any of it. In hearing what she has to say about that experience, my “social consciousness” has gone completely away here.

It just isn’t going to get better before it collapses, sigh. Ten years ago, outside of the socialist loons, this was a really decent place to live.

We are heading north Whatcom probably or Skagget, mostly because my partner has MS and needs (not wants) the cooler climate here. I’d be happy as hell to move out of this socialist shithole to a red state if we only could. Air conditioning costs anywhere else would break us, sigh…

I’m sure you are aware of http://soundpolitics.com/ if not check it out for a look at the ongoing train wreck here.

Lots more I could say, but most folks here are not from scabattle / king county so it would be of little interest so I’ll quit now :-).

Before someone says “Tell us how you really feel” please know that this is not even a good start.

:-), I keep trying to select an avatar but keep getting this:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare cmd_show_avatar() (previously declared in /home/misha/public_html/2007/wp-content/plugins/cmdavitar.php:36) in /home/misha/public_html/2007/wp-content/plugins/cmdavitar.php on line 34

Sigh… And such a clever avatar it is :). Going to have to try another browser.

Sorry to interrupt the little kaffeklatsch here but I thought you would all like to see Karl’s take on the Slimes over at Protein Wisdom. It seems like the people who larder the bill with the poison amendment are actually Democrats. Anyway, real spiffy job by Karl.

There can no longer be any doubt about even the intelligence of the Slimes editorial board. Integrity left the building when Elvis checked out.

By the way, I seem to have misplaced my copy of the memo wherein “Bipartisan” was redefined to mean “buying the votes of just EXACTLY enough slimebucket, no-nad, spermburping RINO fuckwidgits to pass the bill the libruls want, and not one further inch to the right under any circumstances”.

Would someone be kind enough to make a copy of their’s and send it to me, please? Wanna stay up-to-date, ya know.

thwarting bipartisanship to satisfy their reflexive loathing for amnesty, which they define as anything that helps illegal immigrants get right with the law.

Allowing someone who violates the law to “get right with the law” by avoiding the prescribed penalty of violating said law, is by definition, amnesty. Just because the President labels it as something different doesn’t make it so, any more than me claiming the moon is made of cheese means Neil Armstrong walked on Swiss and Gouda.

As for the “tough penalties” those illegals would have to pay: those only kick in if they apply for citizenship. If they just want to be legal Mexican citizens working here, then the bill grants them amnesty immediately.

And Democrats being Democrats, just because they’re non-citizens doesn’t mean they can’t and don’t get to vote for Democrats.

    Fox3 -

Jeez, sorry to read that. I thought NYC was bad, but it seems like paradise in comparison to Seattle. I used to hear a lot of good things about that city, but that was a long time ago. Things change so quickly. I hope you’re able to get out of there soon.

psychochick - I’ve always tried to help people out when I can on things I know something about, but I’ve been doing it even more lately, since Bill Whittle posted his last few essays over at http://www.ejectejecteject.com . “Seeing the Unseen II”, and especially “You Are Not Alone” have really clicked with me.

Doesn’t anyone realize that the largest group of illegal aliens in this country are the ones that entered here legally on a visa and never left?

We tend to put this hispanic face on illegal aliens because we are only focusing on those crossing our southern borders. But we ignore the thousands of people coming into this country through our airports and Northern borders on visas who simply disappear into our society.

Damn, next thing I check out after being unsuccessful, I find the information I’m looking for.

This site has a lot of information, including this document, which estimates that 83% of illegals are Mexican or other Latin American.

    A-hem..

Illegal Mexican immigration amounts to about 500,000 /year of this influx since about 1999.

    Deej sez:

Doesn’t anyone realize that the largest group of illegal aliens in this country are the ones that entered here legally on a visa and never left?

I don’t know what the numbers are, but Deej has a point here. We tend to focus on the “Mexican invasion,” but the 9-11 highjackers, IIRC, were some of those who had come on visas which later expired.

Unless and until we get over this crap about not being able to profile, it seems to me that there will always be those slipping through the cracks.

It’s time to remove the PC (not you, psychchick) shackles from the country and from the INS and let them do their jobs!
