… and wondering how long until the author of this Ass-phyxiated Press article, Robert Tanner, is tombstoned.

The headline is all you really need to see to know that there’s going to be a veritable shitstorm of Howling Moonbats™ pulling out their hair, whilst puking and shitting in public streets, in protest over the hard data that was put together by the authors of the study.

Studies Say Death Penalty Deters Crime

LefTard heads are splodulatin’ everywhere. One of the authors of the study pre-emptively sticks a fork in the Mewling Marxist Morons™ before they can even pull out their bongs and take a good, long hit and sputter their first “But it’s just a BusHitlerNeoConReichWing-backed study!”

“Science does really draw a conclusion. It did. There is no question about it,” said Naci Mocan, an economics professor at the University of Colorado at Denver. “The conclusion is there is a deterrent effect.”

A 2003 study he co-authored, and a 2006 study that re-examined the data, found that each execution results in five fewer homicides, and commuting a death sentence means five more homicides. “The results are robust, they don’t really go away,” he said. “I oppose the death penalty. But my results show that the death penalty (deters) - what am I going to do, hide them?”

If you were employed by the IPCC, absolutely. But, since you’re not, we’re glad you held fast to the scientific principles and didn’t just throw out the data that didn’t fit into your political viewpoint and stuck with the facts. You’re to be commended for your professionalism & honesty, professor Mocan.

My correltion between the two goes back to when i worked for Michigan National Bank, which was t the time owned by National Australia Bank (NAB). The Aussies could never wrap their minds around the number of bank robberies the bank suffered in the course of a year. One of their managers informed us in a meeting that it is a capital crime down under. It was apparently unusual to have more than one in a year.

Of course it deters…recidivism, zero. That is my concern…Joe Crackhead isn’t going to give a shit when he kills somebody, not amped outta’ his skull. But he can be sure not to do it again, not after being shown his way to eternity. The lefties seek to apply the rationale of it not being a deterrent to irrational people. This does not work. Would I think of it? Yes, certainly. But then again, my attitude is I obey laws because I see the value in them and act accordingly, not because I fear punishment.

Even though I occaisonally wave back and forth on the death penalty, I’ve always thought that the issue of deterrence was beside the point.

If you kill someone, depending on the circumstances, you’ve done something terrible. You’ve thrown existence into disharmony. You’ve done something so horrible that even we- fellow sinners who have almost all done something to deserve death- are excused in turning away from you. You’ve committed the only truly irreparable harm.

Furthermore, depending on what you believe, someone specifically- the surviving loved ones, society, the universe, the victim’s ghost- someone, something, somewhere has a claim on your ass. Basically any number of entities (except God, who assures us that he waits on His own Table of Justice) has a feasible and justifiable desire to see you dead. To many, it’s a desire that can outweigh their own morality and common sense.

Therefore, we allow the government to adjudicate in such cases where the alternative is pardoning citizens in pursuit of their own righteous vengeance or “community maintenance programs.” It has nothing to do with “deterring crime,” and everything to do with deterring citizen outrage at plain, undeniable, hideous injustice.

Regarding the death penalty;I always thought that it should be reserved for the most horrible crimes like cop killers, and that man in florida who raped and buried a little girl alive. In my opinion people who do those things to little children forfit the right to live, unless they are seriously mentally ill.

Anyone who takes a life should be summarily executed upon conviction, no paroles, no “life sentences” that mean 20 years, and no appeal. Not only cop killers or those guilty of crimes against children. As for the “mentally ill” out, get rid of that too, it seems to me that anyone that would harm a child IS mentally ill and needs to be out of the gene pool.

Cudos to hitnrun, that summarizes my stance just about perfectly. Couldn’t care less about any deterrent effect. It is a simple matter of Justice. I grew up in central Oregon and some lowlife scamball named Janice Freeman and her lesbian girlfriend bludgeoned the girlfriend’s two childern more or less unconscious and tossed them off a railroad bridge into Crooked River gorge - about four hundred feet or so deep. And another scumball named Mark O. Hatfield commuted her damned sentence as govenor. She got out of prison about ten years ago. The children are still dead.

There should have been a period right before the word “unless” instead of that comma. Anyone so far gone as to do some of the things I have had to clean up after in my life have lost all claim to the title “Human Being.”

And I can personally assure one and all that if someone hurts one of MY little ones, their life will be forfeit. Doesn’t matter is some ambulance chasing “mental health professional” says the party is guilty. And furthermore, they will leave this world screaming.

This is one of those times when all I can say is ditto to all the above comments. Here in Californicateya, we can’t even seem to figure out how to build a nice cushy friggin’ Bon Voyage (to hell!) Chamber that gives the much needed end to universe inhabitation. I would like to re-repeat the ONE IMPORTANT FACT that dead criminals NEVER repeat, least not on this earthly plane. My one complaint being that the shitbirds don’t meet the same ends they practiced on the victims!!!

fine–kill the Ted Bundys and the Jeffry Dahmers, plus the guy that buried that little girl alive. People that are guilty beyond a reasonable shadow of a doubt. I lost no sleep over TB’s execution.

However, there are a number of people that were on Cal death row and have since been shown to be innocent.

There was also a recent Cal case (not capital, I think) with a guy that was charged with a gang shooting. The witness was a young teen-age girl who liked the attention and lied. She recently recanted.

NY state just had a case come up recently where there had been a highly valuable FBI informant, but he murdered someone. They wanted to keep him as an informant, so they framed a few men. Unfortunately it didn’t come out until the men were in their 70s, and one had died.

Do you find it acceptable to take the risk that innocent people might be executed? Life in prison with no chance of parole sounds like a reasonable alternative to me–locked up with scary, dangerous people forever. Then if it turns out someone really was innocent, they would still be alive. (I suspect the lion’s share of people on death row are guilty)

Someone out here was just beaten to death in jail because the inmates mistakenly thought he was a child molester. What do you think would happen to an evil child murderer in prison? I guess he’d be in solitary.

(I really don’t mean to be annoying)

I’m with Caveman–I obey the laws because I think they are right, not out of fear of punishment (except for speeding).

It ain’t called capital deterrence, it’s capital punishment. It’s called the death penalty because death is the ultimate avoidance therapy.

Do you find it acceptable to take the risk that innocent people might be executed? Life in prison with no chance of parole sounds like a reasonable alternative to me–locked up with scary, dangerous people forever.

All systems created by man are prone to error and corruption. Does this mean we shun all corrective action because an innocent may suffer? If life imprisonment with no chance of parole is so terrible an option, why do criminals sentenced to death strive to get life imprisonment? I’ll tell you why, they fear death. And that is why the death penalty deters crime.

I’ve had street punks tell me that they can do ten, fifteen years standing on their head. As long as it’s prison they have a chance to get a lawyer to persuade some asshole judge to overturn the conviction or have their friends terrorize some witness into recanting their testimony.

    No one overrules the executioner….

Yeah the point really isn’t deterrance. Oh it probably DOES actually reduce future crimes. But it’s not primarily deterrance per se — although there probably IS some of that too — it’s that the offender doesn’t get another chance to continue committing crimes.

And it’s true that capital punishment should be reserved for the “worst” crimes… but my definition of worst is a bit different than some. Spam, for instance, should DEFINATELY be a capital crime! :)

Thank you for answering my question. I guess I worry more about innocent people than you do, but it sounds like you have law enforcement or legal experience I have not.

By the way, the death penalty would not at all be a deterrent for me. I would just make sure I had enough ammo to shoot myself afterwards (hypothetically of course). I’ve never even been in a fist fight.
