…a webhost is maintaining two OFFICIAL TALIBAN WEBSITES in spite of numerous notices that they’re in violation of U.S. law (at least until Jorge Arbusto and his drinking buddy Kennedy makes the Taliban and al-Qaeda eligible for Z-visa status as well).

You might want to let the company know how you feel about them aiding and comforting an enemy of the United States in a time of war (contact information included in the post linked to above).

I think a reaction to this has nothing to do with being liberal or right-wing: it makes me physically ill. I want to throw up. I have a little bit of curiousity about how they present things, but not enough to drown out the horror.

Do we get on a government terrorism watch list for viewing the website? Stupid me–I should have restrained myself.

Why would anyone WANT to host taliban websites????
    Are they desparate for business????

I can almost imagine thinking you could get away with this in DC or New York, but I’m sort of surprised no-one in Georgia has set this place on fire……

Actually, comment #4 at Jawa made some sense:

4 Any chance the website is being hosted in America to keep an eye on Taliban traffic and who is posting and replying?

All webhosts — including Hosting Matters — has a tendency to turn a blind eye as to what is contained on their servers. They are immune to complaints from people threatening them to take down certain websites for content.

They are more likely to cooperate with law enforcement to trap people who visit those sites, or contact them. For all you know, emailing those addys might actually put you on a watch list.

Secondly, most of these free web hosts aren’t physically located in the US, even though their IP addresses or contact information suggests that. Many of them are just resellers (like Hosting Matters) and don’t actually own or possess their servers, let alone have a datacenter.

I just recently started up my own web hosting service, and already have seven dedicated servers. You would have no idea that I don’t have them in my possession in my own state-of-the-art datacenter. They are branded with MY logo, and any search would bring you to what I advertise as my “front door”, but the reality is I am just a reseller like Hosting Matters or most of the other hosts.

Actually, comment #4 at Jawa made some sense:

Absolutely true, Deej, and I thought the same thing myself. Which leaves we who do not Need To Know with the classical dilemma: Do we

    1) Assume that such is the case and ignore terrorist websites hosted in the U.S.
    2) Go with “better safe than sorry” and exercise the vigilance that it is our duty and in our own best interest to exercise?

    I go with 2.

I can live with that. Being on a list of citizens concerned about terrorist activity within our borders doesn’t sound like something I’d mind having on my resume :)

However, it all depends on the how and what. If one’s missive to the webhost in question is full of actionable threats of murder and/or vandalism, one should reconsider before hitting “send.” Better is to simply point out the illegality of their actions and, of course, that the proper authorities have been informed of their activities. Leave enforcement to the enforcers, it’s what they get paid to do. Heck, sometimes they even do it.

As to webhosts ignoring complaints that is, generally speaking, as it should be. The First Amendment is as important as all of the others, however it doesn’t cover everything, and hosts would do well to keep that in mind. It doesn’t cover espionage, aid and comfort or other acts of war, even though the New York Times certainly seems to think so.

Just sickening. Unfortunately web hosting companies are not too concerned with what they put on the internet as others have said. I would not go on such a site, even out of curiosity because I might get listed on some sort of watch list.
