If you’re still wondering what this whole Fred! craze and, more importantly, what Fred! himself is all about, here’s a wonderful summary.

Our favorite quote, but do read the whole thing, is this one:

Part of a great nation’s responsibility for keeping peace in the world is the threat it must pose to those who would upset that peace. Therefore, we must act as a deterrent to outrageous activity when our interests are involved. And America’s response in this matter should set a lasting example of what happens to those who unleash bloody attacks especially on our own soil.

The time for carefully measured pinprick responses to terrorists activities has passed. But we in this Body, and in the House, do not have the luxury of simply expressing our outrage or demanding retribution. We, along with the President, set policy and we must quickly reconcile ourselves to some of the things that we must do.

Preach it, Fred!

Bravo Fred, keep it coming pal. Oh, odd how the MSM says Fred is neck and neck with Guiliani. That usually means, since the MSM is full of shite, that Fred is probably ahead of Rudy, way ahead of Ron Paul, and John McCain (stump arms Senator) is not even on the map. Come on Fred, run baby run!

I’m not totally sold on any of the Republican candidates yet, but I lean towards Romney. I like Fred’s position on Federalism and that’s important to me. But sound bites and ripping Michael Moore is one thing, I’d like to see how he stacks up in a debate with the other candidates and I’d like to know more about him. For all we know, he turns out to be the 2008 Howard Dean, a flash-in-the-pan internet campaign that fizzles. I don’t mean to imply he is like Howard Dean in any other way other than he is a presidential candidate. I’d vote for him in a heartbeat if he’s the nominee, I’m just saying I’m not building the bandwagon. I may eventually join it, but I haven’t yet.

As well as an obviously staunch conservative ideology, I would definitely give him extra credit for a strict return to the Federalist Principle.

We often fail to see the real mischief when the over-reaching congress and executive branch, tear this critical constitutional foundation to the winds.

Hell, I didn’t have to go far for that. He tried passing himself off as a ‘country lawyer’ in a red pickup during his 1994 U.S. Senate race — in other words, a Washington outsider — but he is far from it.

Personally, I could care less if he spent time lobbying for Satan himself, just as long as he NOW understands that We, The People want border enforcement, law enforcement, no amnesty for illegal aliens or at the least the right to register and review EVERY illegal alien in the country and send back any who aren’t actively contributing to our American society. I don’t care that he’s been an actor and yes, I do believe Fred! Thompson really does think of himself as a “Washington outsider”. Read what the man written, folks. It looks to me like Fred’s been a-thinkin’ about working on these problems for our country since long before most of these johnny-come-lately candidates had even begun to think about hiring a campaign staff!

Consider, for a moment, that someone doesn’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy watching a good baseball game. However… being a fan of a particular team, and making yourself familiar with the rules of the game and the players on that team can ENHANCE your enjoyment of the sport. Spent twenty years as a lawyer and lobbyist? Big deal. Why did he STOP unless he, himself, felt that the process might be, um, WRONG? Has he not pushed for campaign finance reform and limits on individual donors, or no limits and complete, immediate disclosure of ALL donations? That’s certainly not the view of a “Washington insider”!

I think Fred! comes across with a cool, grandfatherly-wise persona, which really contrasts with the “energetic and polished professional politician” being protrayed by Romney and Guiliani. If we get to see this as a genuine face, concerned and caring for the future of our country (and not simply announcing over and over “I have a plan for our future!” like Romney did in the last debate, the Fred! Bus will soon be parked at the White House (after running flat over Shillary Clinton & Co.)! I’m looking for him to absolutely demolish any Democrat he might face in a debate. There’s an huge measure of understanding and intelligent thought displayed in what he’s written. If he can be coached to present the conservative side of these arguments in his down-home manner while still hammering the point home that liberal policies are flat-out dangerous in today’s world, his rise to the top of the polls at this point will look like a pimple on a mosquito’s butt compared to his popularity in the general election.

I’m With Fred! Get on the bus, folks! We’re leavin’ the station on July 4th, and there’s no looking back until we reach the White House. I haven’t been this excited about a candidate since Reagan in 1980, and I was in the 5th grade then!

Fred is interesting, but I’m not completely sold. Fred’s aligning himself with the oil folk connected with Liz Cheney and more questionable Bushite folk from the Scowcroft Group. Would Fred have handed back the Saudi check as Rudy did?

Also, Dubya lied about moving the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, saying it would be a priority. Fred says the same thing.

Any candidate that wants Condi within 1000 miles of Washington or who would have James Baker III on his rolodex circa 2009 will NOT get my vote, that’s fer sure.

What you said, photomunkey, every word of it.

And please, for the love of tired old failed cliches, quit harping about the “actor angle”, Deej, because it ain’t working. It didn’t work in 1980, and it ain’t gonna fly now. If anything, given the outcome of the last time we chose an actor, it’ll make me more likely to vote for Fred!

Besides, I really couldn’t care less about his character on Law and Order or, for that matter, Law and Order as a show period. As a matter of fact, I didn’t even know that he had a part on that rotten show until he started muttering about running and the MSM, always stuck on old failed cliches proven to not work, started the smear wagon.

What’s the definition of trying the same old failed method over and over again, expecting different results?

And what are the alternatives, not counting the nobodies in the GOP line-up? A Noo Yech liberal, a nobody known only for having been the governor of a state only slightly less communist than Cuba, and everybody’s favorite, Ho Chi McVain.

Fuck, with those choices I’d vote for a rancid rat turd or write in Mickey Mouse in spite of his “acting past.”

    DJ,

HA/MM has several links this week alone to articles covering Mr. Thompson’s past history. Good, bad and indifferent. It’s only responsible to view all the info available, to make a measured choice of candidate.

But you people will fall in love with the character acting, thinking this man is just an extension of the characters he plays on television.

Yup. That IS the common theme here on the Rott, going for the dross over the gold, the sizzle rather than the steak, and… oh, look at the pretty, shiny things!/sarc off

    Btw, Thompson’s played a Neo-nazi before.http://hillaryspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=MjJhNWViOGE2MTAwZDYyODkwZDJhMDdhZGEwNjY5Njg=
Nothing lovable about that. That’s why it’s called Acting. I think it’s safe to say the majority of people here can distinguish the difference.

Hey! The Emperor noticed me! He likes me, he really, really likes me! LOL

Actually, I’m a blonde so after I post, I sometimes forget WHERE I’ve posted. This time however I remembered to click the “Notify me when someone else posts”. Got 10 messages in the last hour… I suppose I should have posted on a thread with less traffic than a “Yay Fred!” thread. (pun intended)

I was thinking today about the past few presidents we’ve had with any “executive experience”, and came up with Arbusto 44 and Clinton 43 as the first two examples. It seems to me that we’re considering the wrong criteria. We should be looking for “leadership” and “decision-making” or “problem-solving” qualities. I see a President (capital “P”) as part cheerleader for the U.S. of A., part international deal-maker (where necessary), and part defender of our way of life here at home. Perhaps someone with more skill at ferreting out the “separation of powers” could explain more about what a President SHOULD do?

My take on Fred! is that he’s a straight-shootin’ son of a gun who’d be your best friend, or your worst enemy. He’s intelligent (perhaps surprisingly so), but disarmingly charming in his manner. I REALLY want to see him face off in a debate with Shillary, just so I can watch her face shrivel up into that fake crimped-lip smile she gets when she’s been served a helping dose of “humility”! You know the look I’m talking about… Oh wait, that could be her normal look. If I’d had to live with Bill C. I’d probably look like that too! Hell, Eva Mendes or Camron Diaz would probably take on that waspish (in the literal sense) “I’ve got horseradish on my tongue” look if subjected to Bill 24/7.

I have to admit, I’m a johnny-come-lately to the political arena, and I’m playing catch-up here. Could it be that Rove and the Republicans are making Bush push the Amnesty hard in order to fire up the conservative base AGAINST Bush AND the Democrats (who have been just foaming at the mouth to get this bill stuffed down our throats), which might make a GOP lock on the White House and Congress in ‘08? Could they really be playing in the “Big Leagues” with this call? If so, that’s really playing out front of the rest of the field. So much so that they’ve suckered the Dems into some crazy speaches which are sure to sit badly during the next election. So much so that they’ve REALLY fired up conservatives… I’m just wondering, could there really be that much money tossed about by “Big Business” in support of a “guest worker program” which would really tick off the big unions and screw American workers? Hard to believe that THAT’S the carrot being dangled for the GOP in this mess.

On the other hand, if they’re simply pandering to the Hispanic/Latino/illegal alien crowd, like we expect the Dems are, in order to sway that voting block for ‘08, does this mean we’re in for one very close election AGAIN if we were to nominate a “cookie-cutter politician” like Giuliani, Romney, or McVain (intentional, NOT a typo!)?

I think we need a LEADER and a real decision-maker for the GOP candidate in order to stand out from the crowd, and I think that person could be Fred! I want to see the debates… and I want to see him kick some ass in the process!

Is this the man everyone is gushing about? What am I missing? Watch the end of the video when Leno asks about Iran. That part particulary didn’t wow me. “Blah, blah, blah, we need to gather all the facts, blah blah blah.” Straight shootin’? Eh…not really.

You have to keep in mind that this was Leno, and not an official political debate, which means that it’s more about personality than anything else, so don’t expect stump speeches. That being said, I’m very interested in his first official appearance as a candidate in a debate. That, more than anything else, will determine what or who he is and if he has a serious chance of winning the nomination.

Iran? Well, he certainly isn’t wrong about looking at all your options first, and what I found nice is that he’s the first to actually suggest, outright, that we utilize propaganda and intelligence assets to ignite a revolution. Not a single one of the other dimwits have done that. Sure, they like to suggest that the problem might be solved by a revolution, but they always stop short of suggesting that we, actively, do something to make it happen.

Perhaps he wasn’t as belligerent in his statements as I’d have been, but he was still more aggressive and pro-active than any one of the spineless, mealy-mouthed, two-faced, dithering ninnies among the current official candidates.

Other than that he came across as good-humored, down to earth, calm and collected and not in the least bit self-conscious, all of which I consider to be great personality traits.

And I can’t help but love somebody who starts out by saying that he doesn’t want the job of President, but that there are things that he wants to do that he can’t do without it.

    There’s my posts!

Definitely agreed on wanting to see his first official appearance in a debate as a candidate. I know it was just Leno, but even though he’s not “official” he’s still campaigning.

Romney has talked about Iran. From a Boston Globe article detailing a speech Romney gave in January:

“Romney positioned himself as a foreign policy hawk and outlined a five-point plan on Iran: tighter sanctions, diplomatic isolation, coordination with Arab allies, threat of a military response if Iran goes nuclear, and a global campaign against “radical Islam.”"

Isn’t that a little more than being a spineless, mealy-mouthed, two-faced, dithering ninny?

I like Romney as I have said, but I don’t drink any politicans kool-aid. They are all still politicians. Fred included.

photomunkey, I agree that executive experience is not the end-all-be-all but Reagan also had executive experience. Just saying.

I was pulling the two examples we might rank as two of the worst in “modern times”. Reagan ranks as one of the greats, no matter who’s doing the ranking, and while his executive training helped, it was his ability to communicate AND delegate and MAKE A CLEAR DECISION which set him apart. That and that 99% charm!

Iran? Well, he certainly isn’t wrong about looking at all your options first, and what I found nice is that he’s the first to actually suggest, outright, that we utilize propaganda and intelligence assets to ignite a revolution. Fred has made the poin that fiscally, Iran is on shaky ground and that, perhaps, we should actively “give them a push”. It’s called “playing the game better than your opponent” and for everyone who’s forgotten, it’s what Reagan did when he pushed the Soviets so hard to keep up. The question is, why haven’t any of the last three presidents been able to play the game this way. Incompetence in the CIA, career politicians in positions they shouldn’t hold? Whatever the case, we’ve squandered most of the goodwill the U.S. once had in the world (after the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall) and now lack assest on the ground which could help us in this regard. A new man in power will need to reestablish the “Pax Americana” theory with the rest of the world first, before anyone’s going to agree with us toppling Iran.

I still like the “Crazy American” approach. When someone hurts us, we strike back with disproportionate, building-leveling force, and repeat as necessary until people stop fucking with us because we’re those “crazy freakin’ Americans”. Then they can go off and screw with the rest of the world. Iran needs to learn this lesson RIGHT NOW! If there’s an insurgent training camp in Iran, we should level it first, then invite them to “talk about it”. If there’s an active centrifuge working, we should level it, then suggest perhaps they should have left their nuclear ambitions “on the table for discussion”. Please note that I did not say “negotiate”. We talk, they listen. This works really well after they’ve already been publicly and forcibly spanked, just like with a petulant child. Human nature hasn’t drastically changed in the last thousand years or so, and it’s not going to change at any time in the near future either. Fred! obviously knows this, and knows that it’s time for a leader who WILL make these types of decisions.

Why does a country sitting on a sizable fraction of the world’s petroleum supplies NEED nuclear power? Could it be that they WANT nuclear weapons for those massive missles they keep displaying in Iranian propaganda footage? Naw… they’re completely harmless according to the MSM! Missiles, plus, nuclear warheads, plus a decidedly anti-sementic radical islamo-fascist leader sounds vaguely like a story I once heard about guns, plus bombs, plus a decidedly anti-sementic nazi-fascist leader in Europe. We all know how that turned out. What I don’t understand is how ANY liberal can POSSIBLY claim that Iran should be allowed to split the atom! We should offer, if Iran really wants a peaceful, nuclear power plant, to simply BUILD and RUN one for them… next door in Iraq! Sell them the power at a fractional cost. One decent multi-reactor complex, guarded by Marines (Semper Fi, baby!) ought to be enough to power their entire third-world economy for some time into the foreseeable future.

Hey, didn’t Clinton play saxophone on one of those nighttime talking-head shows once? Yeah, that really showed off his “executive experience”!

Isn’t that a little more than being a spineless, mealy-mouthed, two-faced, dithering ninny?

    Let’s see:

a five-point plan on Iran: tighter sanctions,

Been there, done that, ain’t gonna happen unless we promise to nuke every country not voting with us in the UN.

No new idea there, just repeating the mistakes of Arbusto while pretending to be doing something.

    diplomatic isolation,

Got the T-shirt. Again, how’s that supposed to work? Are the EU and Russia going to suddenly, miraculously change their tune from the last six years?

    Empty blather.

    coordination with Arab allies,

My sides fucking hurt now. What “allies”, pray tell? Our “eternal friends”, the Saudis? Is Mitt going to put on a hijab and take a trip to Damascus?

    Nothing new, empty blather.

threat of a military response if Iran goes nuclear,

That train left the station a long time ago. And what’s with the threats? We’ve been “threatening” since forever but, thanks to our lack of follow-through, nobody believes a fucking word of what we’re saying, nor should they.

and a global campaign against “radical Islam.””

Finally something that I haven’t heard a million times before, kudos to him for that, PARTICULARLY for recognizing that we’re not at war with a tactic but with a sick, psychotic death cult of an ideology.

I’ll hand him that one, and I appreciate him saying so, because the limp-dicked one in the White House sure as Hell hasn’t. He’s been too busy licking the floor of every mosque he can find while babbling about the “Religion of Peace.”

But other than that, it’s a load of vague, tried-and-failed, unenforceable hogwash designed to sound good without actually accomplishing anything. Enough bravado for a nice soundbite coupled with too few specifics to be even remotely useful.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Mitt happens to be pretty much the only alternative (among the candidates even remotely likely to actually get the nomination) that I wouldn’t mind holding my nose for if he’s the one we end up with, and I will, unless something truly outrageous surfaces about him before November ‘08, but I’m not exactly overwhelmed here. I like him, he’s got a nice personality and demeanor, but unless Fred! washes out and turns out to be a complete phony, Fred! is still da man.

Thing is, I don’t know how Fred! will turn out once he gets serious, and nor does anybody else. I hope to G-d that he doesn’t disappoint, but I can’t know until he throws his hat officially in the ring.

I thought we were already doing that. We’ve been funding the opposition, which is great, but foolishly made it known. That is not helping their cause. I thought we were already doing that. We’ve been funding the opposition, which is great, but foolishly made it known. That is not helping their cause.

It really depends. In some circles, it actually helps. Iranians as a general rule don’t hate the U.S. — some even admire us — even if they may be critical of some U.S. policies. (Thanks a bunch, Carter!) For Iranians who would see U.S. intervention as a negative, it’s not so much thought of U.S. aid specifically: it’s a matter of their pride. Iranians prefer to be able to handle things on their own, to stand on their own two feet. In other words, they are the antithesis of the American entitlement crowd.

Thanks–that’s interesting. My concern about the funding being publicly known is that evil leader could write off the opposition as just being American stooges and take them less seriously. Although I wouldn’t guarantee that he took them seriously anyway.

I read/heard somewhere (MSM) that Iranians had spontaneous demonstrations in favor of the US after 9/11.
