Trent “Railroad to Nowhere” Lott, yet another of the McKennedy ass-kissers, isn’t too thrilled with the First Amendment:

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

Congrats, you anti-American, treasonous sack of shit, you just activated my Oath of Allegiance.

I guess we voters will have to “deal with THAT problem.”

And we will, I promise you that we will.

This is sickening. I can’t believe that this kind of thing is even being discussed here in the US. It starts with people getting censured for saying something about against Muslims, gays or anyone except white Christians, continues with hate crime legislation and ends with forced re education.

I’m still trying to figure out what the GOP was thinking when they gave that asshole lott a leadership position….again…..

He destroyed the GOP congress in the 90’s with his sucking up to the dems and offering them a shared leadership and he forgets that it was talk radio, along with the Contract With America that gave him his power in the first place. Without Rush and the others broadbanding the malfeasance of the clinton admin and the dems in general, he would have never have enjoyed the majority status that he so carelessly abused.

    Crunchie
Thanks. I guess I was thinking of the one-man talk radio shows that are heavy on the invective.

Actually, I cannot handle Rush. His personality really grates on me, and I think he plays loose with the facts. I’d be willing to give Hannity a shot, and who is this divine Laura Ingram person that people keep drooling over (it’s not Dr. Laura, is it?–if so, no way. Her newspaper column here is very nasty). I guess it’s time to Google (somehow that still sounds kind of obscene). I really don’t do a lot of tv or radio news.

I don’t know if it would be in my tv guide. Could someone on the West Coast tell me when Hannity is on?

I always read the conservative commentators in the paper. I generally don’t agree, but it’s good to have the perspective. Sometimes I alter an opinion.

You have to learn Rush’s personality PC, it takes a few weeks to “get” him. Laura Ingram is not Dr.Laura (although I like Dr.Laura also). She’s a hottie with a unique sense of humor. Definitely take Nat’s advice and give Glenn Beck a try. He is hilarious! He has a tv show on CNN also. But like he says, it takes a few weeks. Michael Savage? You can have him. He makes me ill.

Hannity I like when he’s dispensing news you don’t get from the MSM, but he really pisses me off when he tries to pigeonhole people who he thinks have a particular belief but are trying to say otherwise.

Rush - you have to realize that he uses a lot of sarcasm and hyperbole to get his point across in an entertaining manner. If I thought he was completely serious, he would probably make my head explode.

I like to listen to Laura Ingraham most of the time. Sometimes even she goes over a line.

I actually like my “Morning Drive” local talk station (55KRC) the best. They carry all those others, but the 5AM-9AM show is local. I think they have a pretty good balance.

Au contraire Spartan. Rush has criticized Bush a lot over a lot of things, and early on also. And he definitely doesn’t spout the Republican line, like another commenter alluded too. Hannity, I like him too, same thing, I’ve heard him nail Bush a few times. They are both conservatives first and Republicans second.

Except for music and films, I don’t do well with aggressive in your face stuff. So I am probably not the target audience for Rush. But as SkyeChild said, there is always the option to not listen.

That cracks me up that Sowell’s position is/was funded by the Friedmans. It seems fitting . It was really nice of them to endow a Fellow. I’m sure it’s very prestigious to be chosen for that position. Yes, it is impressive to be at Stanford.

I’ll be frank, I believe in the 2nd Amendment. I don’t own a gun myself. Not sure if I’ll ever get one, but I know friends, very good friends who own them, and I would be the first to protect their right to own one. Heck, I’d fired a few myself back when I was in college in the early 80s. Of course, I was in ROTC at the time, and, well, ROTC was just getting back on its feet at the time.

Do I have problem with a law abiding citizen having a gun? No, especially if he or she knows how to take care of it, have learned how to fire it, understands gun safety, and know how to keep it safe from the kiddies if they have kids, so that they won’t, well, I don’t think I need to go any further as far as kids and guns are concerned.

Talk radio IS running America. It is really the only source of news, and for the longest time it was in the Republican favor. Now the tide is turning. Slowly, the left is starting to get a foothold in talk radio, and within the next five years, it will be right up there with talk radio on the right.

Conservative talk wasn’t successful overnight, and neither will progressive talk. But progressive talk is further ahead now than conservative talk was at this point.

Politicians like Trent Lott can’t stand the idea that there are going to be major media types exposing their flanks. And so it should be. The only business mentioned in the Constitution was the media, and for damn good reason: the media has the important task of shining the light on the cockroaches. Our current corporate media refuses to do that now. We get stories on Anna Nichole Smith rather than the real news. Why do I care if Paris Hilton is crying her eyes out going to jail? Why the fuck is this even news?

No it’s not, talk radio is informing America. Regardless of what most on the left and apparently our government thinks, Americans run America!

OK, I listen to talk radio almost exclusively, and you’re gonna have to fill me in here. Give me some examples of the left getting a “foothold” in talk radio. I know you don’t mean that failed “attempt” during the last election, right? Hell, I think RadioCIA has a higher listenership than Air America ever did.

And that’s the only example I’ve been able to find of syndicated Left Talk Radio. Gonna take a lot more than 5 years to make up 20 years of head start.

Regular Rush listeners will recognize the Rio Linda comment. Apparently, he made a visit to Rio Linda, and came away unimpressed with the “trailer trash” mentality of the city…cars on blocks, etc. So, when he feels he has to explain something basic, or redefine something, he pick on Rio Linda.

    DJ says:

the media has the important task of shining the light on the cockroaches.

Except that they no longer do that. Most media is biased towards the left. Democrats tend to get free passes on things that Republicans are excoriated for.

We are getting dangerously close to hitting the reset button here.

Conservative talk wasn’t successful overnight, and neither will progressive talk. But progressive talk is further ahead now than conservative talk was at this point.

Buh-hahahahaha! Dream on, pal. If you were even a small bit right, Air America would be a power house.

We get stories on Anna Nichole Smith rather than the real news. Why do I care if Paris Hilton is crying her eyes out going to jail? Why the fuck is this even news?

Agreed, when I hear either of those names, I change the channel. Does anyone really want to hear THAT bullshit?

“Democrats tend to get free passes on things that Republicans are excoriated for.”

    such as?
I see no shortage of criticism of Democrats and will try to mention them as they come up.
Jefferson got ripped to shreds–he didn’t get a break for being a Democrat (good!)

PC - the simplest answer to your question is right here.

The Republican apologized and was voted out next time, the Democrat went on the offensive and was reelected. The part that is not mentioned is the rest of the Democrats defending their fellow Dem. It’s been brought up here, before, but I don’t think you were hanging out here, then.

Thanks. I believe you that he was defended by other Democrats. But the point of my post was that Democrats don’t get a free ride in the press, and I seem to remember heavy press criticism of Studds. But it was years ago. It is conceivable that I am wrong (many people seem to think that!).

PC, when Trent Lott made his racial comments, the press howled for his resignation. When Robert “KKK” Byrd made his racial comments, the press made mention of it, but there was no cry for resignation. Had a Republican made the comment about blacks that Howard Dean made, the press would have been demanding resignations.

When the press found that Mark Foley had sent suggestive emails, they demanded his resignation. There was no such call for Gerry Studds, nor even Barney Frank.

Scooter Libby was convicted by both the court and the press for something he didn’t do, but Sandy Berger got a free pass for stealing classified documents.

When was the last time you heard about something GOOD happening in Iraq? There ARE good things happening, but the press won’t report them because they would make Bush look good.

Remember Dan Rather’s “fake but accurate” claim about the forged Bush ANG documents? It was a “non-issue” to the press, but let Fox News mess up, and there are calls for them to be shut down.

Al Franken is allowed to spew his filth and bile all over the national air waves without fear of retribution, but let Dr. Laura claim that homosexuals are NOT born that way, and there are demands for her to be removed from the air.

There are many, many, more examples that I could come up with, but I don’t have the time right now.

Thank you for giving a detailed answer to my question!

I think you are right about the racial things

Are you sure there were no calls for Studds to step down? I remember a lot of negative press coverage. gay sex with a page is not exactly a popular thing. Studds had one affair, which was wrong. Foley had a number of instances going back several years, although they were internet, not actual sex. I guess I missed what Barney Frank did.

You are totally wrong about there not being coverage of good things in Iraq. The past couple days have been negative, because deaths have been increasing. But there was quite a bit of coverage about things going well in the Anbar province and how areas of Baghdad were getting pacified. I can’t read everything–I read the LA Times and the NY Times. Both evil publications do run positive comments about the war fequently. I think it’s a mistake to think that good coverage of the war would be suppressed to make Bush look bad. Being able to publish good coverage would way trump what anybody thought of Bush. I actually don’t think of Bush running the war–I think of the generals and the secretary of defense. They are considered in the MSM to be a “crackerjack team.” Plus who cares about Bush any more? I don’t even waste my hatred on him any more.

I haven’t heard Al Franken in several years. He criticizes Republican policies, but what does he say that is evil? Maybe he does–I just haven’t heard him in awhile. I used to read Dr. Laura’s columns in our paper (which we stopped getting). I have posted that I always read the conservative columnists, and people like George Will and Thomas Sowell made good arguments, even if I generally disagreed with them. They always made me think. Dr. Laura used to get a half page column, and I thought she was really hateful and not an intellectual peer of the other conservative columnists. And my presence here should indicate that just because I disagree with someone does not mean I automatically consider them hateful. They have to earn that.

I refuse to comment on Libby. Honestly, I’m not up on what Sandy Berger did. I think I was in grad school then and missed a lot of news.

Let’s not get into Fox News. I’m getting kind of burned out.

The Republican whip, Trent Lott of Mississippi, who supports the bill, said: “Talk radio is running America. We have to deal with that problem.”

He certainly wasn’t saying that when Rush was coming to his rescue not too long ago, now was he?

Oh Trent, my boy…you forget who pays your salary.

more about Iraq–I think you are right about the tv news not showing good things in Iraq: bombing here, death there. Plus they generally don’t explain which faction did the bombing, so you have no clue if you get your news from TV. Maybe the substantive national shows are better. I just see our fucked up local news.

I get most of my news from the major papers, so that’s what I was thinking about. I think the papers give much more balanced coverage. I really do.

PC - If you get back to see this comment: Could you give a couple of examples of what kind of positive coverage you’re seeing on Iraq? Not saying you’re wrong, but I would like to see if they are the kind of examples I would want to see presented. I can’t keep up with the number of sources you apparently do, so I tend to rely a lot on reports from people who I determine I can trust to represent things properly when they condense them into a form I will have the time to read.

Regarding Sandy Berger, what happened with him was during the 9/11 investigation, in 2003:
