Since you are seeing this, it means that you are back in the palace and not the portable outside the moat.

I have finished the upgrade of this site from WP 2.0.7 to WP 2.1.0, which is a new generation of the WordPress blogging apparatus.

Unlike previous upgrades within the WP 2.0.x versions where I could upgrade in the background and not create a ripple, this was a major change in the software that required not only the base upgrade, but also a change in the theme and many of its plugins.

Some things didn’t make it in the process and new features replaced them. It is all good.

What’s new?

Polls

We now have the ability to include one or more polls directly into a thread, like the two down below:

{democracy:1}

Another poll:

Instant Bark Upgrade

This is a re-write of the original version from Jalenack written by a guy named Pierre out of (you guessed it) France. I thought the irony was precious, but hey, it works, so live with it. The new version works with WP 2.1.0 and it has a few new features like Spam protection and sounds. For example, on the NEW version of the bark, when you send a message, you will get a sound. Try it out. If it becomes irritating to you, just click the little speaker to shut off the sound.

Also, there are now clickable smilies for the bark. These are the stock WordPress smilies, but if you bug me enough over time I will add some more.

Plugins Used Page

Okay, for most of you, this is not a big deal. But for those of you with your own WordPress sites, this is a list of the plugins we use here and where you can find them. These are the ones that work with WP 2.1.0, and are probably upgrades from the ones you currently have on your site.

A small warning though — while you might see us using these plugins here, they might not be the exact plugin you download out of the box from the author’s site. I have modified a few of them to work here.

Expandable Inline Comments

Okay, if you are like me, and would like to take a quick gander at the comments without having to leave the front page, then this is the feature for you. If you look you will see the usual | xx Comments » | link and right next to it another link that says, “show comments »”. Click on that and the comments will unfold before your eyes. Read the comments, then hide them and move on to the next thread without ever having to leave the front page.

Anyways, you are back where you belong, and that’s the important thing.

So long as we all recognize that “supercalifragulistic” is *not* the same as “supercalifragilistic” everything s/b “expialidocious”.

    Oh, uh, YEAH!
    I LIKE “show comments”!
    Faster, readable, etc.
“hide comments” would “be better” *after* said in-line comments.
“add comment” would be “better” if it didn’t take you back to “the old” comments section…. don’t remember if the avatars showed up ‘though.

It would also be better if I had as much money as Bill Gates, I looked as good as Brad Pitt, and was as smart as Steven Hawkings, but this is these are the cards I have been dealt. I’ve learned to live with it. Besides, two out of three isn’t bad…. :lol_wp:

This is how the plugin came, and from the looks of it, it is probably the way it will stay.

Seriously…it has to do with our router/firewall. From what M has told me, our location is actually blocked from being tracked. I dunno if that’s really it..but I’ll take his word for it. Seems to be the most plausible explanation for my being countryless.

Seriously…it has to do with our router/firewall. From what M has told me, our location is actually blocked from being tracked.

I suspected that was what it is. Someone else here has the problem of being caught by the banning software because he is using a caching firewall that registers as a false IP address. Two small problems with that:

    a) The banning software can still tell what your originating IP address is AND the one your firewall says it is. When it sees the discrepancy… well, you probably won’t want to know…

    b) As I was telling Spats last night, this is a tactic Spammers use to mask their IP addys. Eventually, things are going to get so bad with spammers that we will have no other choice but to allow by invitation only or block all questionable IP addresses. (by ‘questionable’, I mean all those that don’t appear to be valid)

There has been some talk over the past few years of changing how IP addresses are done. The main reason is that they are running out of IP addresses. But the other plan is to make these addresses unique to each connection.

    Oops, commercial break is over…

Okay, now you have ME worried. I am sitting behind a firewall and router, and ShieldsUp! tells me my computer is in stealth mode, but MY information shows up? What’s up with that? And if I AM in stealth mode, how does ShieldsUp! know that????

Because nobody can see you unless you reach out and touch them. Unless you have a caching firewall, you are going to leave fingerprints.
